Ten years ago when the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation was formed, it was molded with the same
passion for healing, service and hope for children upon which our partner in pediatric well-being, DMC Children’s
Hospital of Michigan, was founded.
In the last two years, we have evolved at a rapid pace, and 2012 was a breakthrough year for the Foundation. We
streamlined our grant process, we expanded the number of professionals in our organization, and we launched our
new, dynamic website. We also published About Children, allowing us to share with you the heartwarming successes
of the children and families who have been helped by your commitment, as well as the latest advancements in
medical research and the tremendous community outreach programs that the Foundation is proud to support.
These are just a few of the changes that led to an amazing year.
In 2012, we not only broadened the number of young lives we were able to touch through funding, we also saw the
advent of fresh ideas and new interest from a generation of promising philanthropists. We welcomed our Leaders for
Kids Advisory Board, whose successful “Cheers for Children” event exemplified the sincerity and awareness instilled
in a younger, energetic assembly of humanitarians. As well, the Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Society, Inc.
debuted their dynamic event, “Fashion Across the Decades.” The path has been well-paved by our legacy donors
and we are so thankful for your unyielding commitment.
The real difference is you. We have worked closely with physicians, nurses, child life specialists and other professionals
to ensure your gifts help make critical health and wellness resources available for our children. With your support,
we were able to continue the important work that gives the children of Michigan a future to which they can look
forward and smile.
We know that the success of 2012 is only the beginning. There are many more discoveries to make, techniques to
be perfected and stories to be shared. We are here to cultivate a healthier, hopeful world for our young people
and, with your continued support, we can do it.
We have dived into 2013 with the momentum of last year and we are not stopping. This year, we will dream, hope
and discover together.

ABOUT T H E FOU N DATION
The Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation supports pediatric research, education, community benefit programs, and other
initiatives that improve the health of children in Michigan.
We aim to make a significant, lasting, and positive effect on children’s health, locally and globally. By collaborating with experts at
the DMC Children’s Hospital of Michigan and partnering with other affiliated organizations, we work to identify healthcare programs
that will have the greatest positive effect on the health of young people and their families.
Your gift benefits the health and well-being of children in our community in one of three major ways:
Your donation supports scientific pediatric research at the Children’s Research Center of Michigan (in affiliation with the Karmanos
Cancer Institute and Wayne State University), as well as other pediatric medical research initiatives. This research results in the
advancement of new techniques in pediatric care and the treatment of diseases. Donations also support basic research projects
that enable physicians and scientists to study disease at cellular and molecular levels, transitional research which develops practical
applications for scientific discoveries, and clinical research at patients’ bedsides.
Among the many projects the Foundation is able support are asthma research to improve outcomes, congenital heart defects
treatment research, and traumatic brain injury research.
Your gift also helps fund community programs that advance the health and well-being of children. Many critical services and
pioneering programs that address key issues essential to the physical, mental, and social healing and development of children are
not covered by other private or public sources. Philanthropic contributions fund injury prevention programs and provide access to
support services, mitigating the impact of illnesses and injuries. Congruent with our world-class partners, the Children’s Hospital of
Michigan Foundation consistently meets the needs of the children and families in our community.
Programs such as Adopt-A-Family, Child Life family support services, the Horizons Project, and the integrated mental health care
program provide resources, counseling, and compassion that help children to navigate difficult and frightening circumstances.
Another way your gift benefits the children in our community is by supporting continuing medical education for physicians and
healthcare providers by ensuring that they have access to the latest information, techniques, and training. These funds allow
medical professionals to attend conferences and seminars where they share information with the best and brightest in their fields.
Additionally, they support international lecture series, where noted pediatricians and scientists present groundbreaking findings to
healthcare professionals, as well as appearances by established pediatric medical experts who provide lectures and training to the
next generation of pediatricians, caregivers, and families.
These educational opportunities include the Annual Clinic Days medical education lectures and conference, critical care education,
and the psychiatry and psychology conference.
The Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation is grateful that, with the support of our generous benefactors and partnerships with
medical experts and community organizations, children have more days to play, nights to dream, and time just to be kids.

Waiting to undergo complicated medical procedures in a sterile room can be a scary, anxious time for a child. By using art or
music as a distraction, however, patients at DMC Children’s Hospital of Michigan have a chance to step outside the situation,
inspiring creativity, hope and a faster recovery. The Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation was proud to support both the
Healing Arts Program and Music Therapy last year, just two of the more than 130 grants we awarded to help improve the health of
children in our state.
In fact, the Foundation awarded approximately $5 million in 2012, thanks to the generosity of countless donors who support the work
we do. The impact of these gifts is felt in nearly every area of a patient’s hospital stay:
• The nurse who cares for a child may also be one of four selected each year for the Nursing Fellowship Program, an intensive
program of lectures, one-on-one mentorship and advanced nursing practices designed to offer children and their families
the best pediatric nursing care available.
• The doctor may also be conducting ground-breaking medical research, like the Foundation-funded pediatric bipolar
study, or neuroscience research into how alcohol consumed by pregnant mothers affects the nervous system development
of their children.
• If a child is overweight – an epidemic in our society – they may be asked to participate in the innovative SHAPEDOWN
weight management program designed to reduce childhood obesity.
In collaboration with Children’s Hospital affiliated partners, each year the Foundation funds critical support in three primary areas:
Pediatric Research, helping advance the development of new and exciting techniques in pediatric medical care and the
treatment of diseases;
Community Benefit, supporting programs and services that benefit patients and help them to prevent injury, access supportive
services and manage the impact of illnesses and injuries on them and their families;
Pediatric Medical Education, ensuring that physicians, healthcare staff and caregivers get the latest information, techniques
and training to provide the best care for children.
It’s never fun to be ill or injured, but Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation is working hard to award grants that ensure every
stage of a child’s medical experience supports their health and well-being. Because a song or a coloring book might be just what
a kid needs to help focus on getting better.

2012 Highlights
2012 was a positive financial year for the Foundation. Net assets increased $8.3 million, from $96.5 million at December
31, 2011 to $104.8 million at December 31, 2012. The Foundation received $6.0 million in revenues and other support.
Investment activity yielded $10.1 million in income, realized gains, and unrealized gains. Expenses incurred amounted
to $7.8 million, with grant disbursements representing $5.1 million of that total as the Foundation continued to support
pediatric research, medical education, and community benefit initiatives.

Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation is proudly celebrating our tenth year of contributing to the health and
wellness of Michigan’s children. As the face of healthcare evolves, the Foundation remains an organization of excellence
and dedication.
Proud of the strides the Foundation has helped to make in the community, the organization has continued its dedication
to programs that make a difference for children and families.
• A 2012 Foundation Grant made it possible to hire the first Art Therapist at DMC Children’s Hospital of Michigan
to complement clinical care received by patients, particularly those on dialysis.
• The Foundation partnered with the Guidance Center of Michigan Kids-Talk program to provide thorough,
efficient care and service to children suspected to have been subject to physical abuse.
• In the wake of the childhood obesity epidemic, the Foundation is funding the SHAPEDOWN program, a family centered weight management resource that aids children and families on a journey to a healthy mental and
physical lifestyle.
In 2012, approximately $5 million in grants were awarded to support advancements in vital projects. The following are
a few examples of those projects:
• Dr. David Rosenberg’s investigation to understand pediatric bipolar disorder.
• Dr. Seetha Shankaran’s neonatal cooling research to protect infants from brain damage.
• In 2012, the Kohl’s Injury Prevention Program provided safety information to over 300,000 children and family
members, and distributed over 7,300 bike helmets, 1,800 car seats and booster seats, 5,400 smoke alarms,
and 2,200 carbon monoxide alarms in the community.
• Last year, the Hamtramck School-Based Health Center treated more than 800 children in the Hamtramck
community, enrolled some 200 in health insurance, and provided 2,800 immunizations.
The Foundation continues to work with the world-class physicians, healthcare professionals and experts that make
miracles happen each day. The children of Michigan will continue to flourish and find comfort in knowing that there is
hope for brighter decades to come.
