Correct belief and understanding sets us off in the right direction, and actually walking the path gets us closer to our destiny in Christ. We begin again Sunday, September 13, as we set out for Adventures in Faith: Following the path less traveled. Following the path less traveled will transform us, change us, and create new experiences. In order to provide opportunities for that to happen for you, leaders at Wedgwood Community Church offer you new possibilities along with those that may be new to you. Here are some of the paths you might take to move closer to our destiny in Christ. Bible Studies mornings or evenings, home faith discussions, getting to know your neighbors through organizing disaster preparedness one-time meetings, receiving mentoring in faith sharing, movie night, reading the Bible through in one year with weekly notes about the portions to be read, retirement and rehab center worship services, service to the homeless, becoming a worship or song leader, a children’s ministry teacher, and many more. The full list will be available September 6 so you can decide well ahead of September 13 which paths you are called to walk this year. We hope Jesus will lead you on the path that will bring you to new awareness of and action with Christ. God bless you as you pray on these things. After several discussions, the Lay Leadership Team decided to collaborate with Wedgwood Presbyterian and Maple Leaf Lutheran in these events: Saturday: 9 AM – 1 PM: The Parking Lot sale will be held at the north end of Hunter’s Tree Farm block on 35th Avenue in a parking lot owned by Wedgwood Presbyterian. You can reserve your table with Victoria Wenick at 206-550-6048 or volunteer to help set up. Donations ($10 to reserve a table) will support the Mayor’s Day of Concern for the Hungry. Also on Saturday, you can support the Mayor’s Day by inviting those entering the QFC on 35th Avenue Northeast and NE 85th Street, between 11:20AM – 1 PM or 1 – 2:20 PM, to purchase from a food list, to be donated when they leave the store. Join Bruce and Candy Sagor, as well as Marilyn Potts, who have already signed up. Sunday: 12:30 – 1:30 PM: Potluck at Wedgwood Community Church. We will host Maple Leaf Lutheran and Wedgwood Presbyterian and have opportunities to get to know each other over some really good food. Pastor Wim will be recruiting you to help set up and clean up, so you might as well contact him and sign up before he asks! Pastor Wim Page 5 Lay Leadership Team Meeting Highlights Candidates for the church custodian position are being interviewed. The speakers and the speaker stands for the sound system in the sanctuary have been purchased. Ed was given approval to make those purchases. There will be small group opportunities for people to sign up for - offered during the social hour at Kickoff Sunday on September 13. Because more children are regularly attending Sunday School, new teachers are needed for the classes. The Lay Leadership Team is investigating replacing windows in the Fellowship Hall. Milt Brown Baby Rose Dedicated Rose Zelaya, the precious baby daughter of Gerardo and Katie Zelaya, was dedicated during our worship service on Sunday, August 23. Beautiful words were spoken by both of her parents and our hearts were touched by their overwhelming love for Rose and their commitment to her. We are blessed to have Gerardo, Katie, and Rose as a part of our church family. [Photograph taken by Kris Delaney] Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Make “someday” today! Please join the Wedgwood Walkers Light The Night team's effort by registering to walk on October 24 at Seattle Center or by making a donation to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Your participation will help LLS achieve our mission … a world without cancer! Thanks for your support! http://pages.lightthenight.org/wa/SeattleL15/WedgwoodWalkers This year we are walking in memory of our dear friend Marty Welch. Victoria Wenick Page 6 Ivan Maryanskiy How Ivan happened into our church that first Sunday morning, I have no idea, but he added to our group immediately. As we “got to know” him— some more than others—we realized he needed our friendship, just as we needed his. We also came to realize that this was a young man struggling with issues of life. He never complained, nor asked us for anything, except our friendship, and was always willing to help with anything he could. He became very faithful to anything going on in the church and I, personally, miss him very much. Most of us did not realize how deep those struggles went. If you asked him how he was doing, his response was always, “I’m struggling, but it’ll be okay. Thank you for loving me and caring.” For reasons unknown to us, he made a decision that it was just too hard, that he was a burden to all, and decided to leave this life for a better one. Hopefully, if we ever have “another Ivan” come into our midst, we will have the ability to be able to have the sensitivity and welcoming spirit to help them along the way. Marilyn Potts Community Conversations at Queen Anne Baptist Church Come, join the upcoming Discussions hosted by Rev. Sean Brown in the Queen Anne Baptist Church Sanctuary on the following dates: Wednesday, September 16, at 7 PM – Why Don’t People Go to Church? Wednesday, October 14, at 7 PM – Why Do People Go to Church? Wednesday, November 18, at 7 PM – Four Freedoms of the Baptist Church Collected Items We can no longer send eyeglasses to Haiti. It has become too expensive to mail them. All things “carried in” have to go through customs and have fees paid. Workers have been able to get supplies/donations from elsewhere for the Eye Clinic. I will let you know if I find another organization that can use our no-longer-needed eyeglasses. We are also no longer collecting soup can labels. That avenue is no longer available for supplying goods to Camp Burton. Possibly, we can start collecting box tops for Wedgwood school, if they participate in that program. We’ll check with them when school starts again. Marilyn Potts Page 7 MOVIE NIGHT Book Club We are including the birthdays of our American Baptist Special Interest Missionaries, including their children. Bring a snack to share and invite a friend! The Perfect Church I think that I shall never see A church that’s all it ought to be; A church whose members never stray Beyond the straight and narrow way; A church that has no empty pews, Whose pastor never has the blues; A church whose deacons always deak And none are proud and all are meek; Where gossips never peddle lies, Or make complaints or criticize; Where all are always sweet and kind, And all to others’ faults are blind. Such perfect churches there may be, But none of them is known to me; But still I’ll work and pray and plan To make our own the best we can! Author Unknown [submitted by Marilyn Potts] The Book Club’s September selection is The Case for Christ by Lee Strobel, “a journalist's personal investigation of the evidence for Jesus.” Everyone is welcome to join us as we read and discuss this book. Did You Know? In 1850 Dr. John Gorrie, studying tropical diseases in Apalachicola, Florida, built a refrigeration unit to cool patients’ rooms, greatly improving their chances of recovering from malaria. There was not yet any electricity, and he could not find financial backers, and he died penniless in 1855. The idea lay dormant until 1906, when Willis Carrier improved upon it by removing humidity from the air and received a patent for an “air conditioning device.” Barbara Johnson BULLETIN BOARD Read the Bible in One Year (September 1-30) 317 318 319 320 321 322 323 324 325 326 327 328 329 330 331 332 333 334 335 336 337 338 339 340 341 342 343 344 345 346 Ezekiel 24, Ezekiel 25 Hebrews 11:17-40 Ezekiel 26:, Ezekiel 27 Hebrews 12:1-13 Ezekiel 28, Ezekiel 29 Hebrews 12:14-29 Ezekiel 30, Ezekiel 31 Hebrews 13 Ezekiel 32, Ezekiel 33:1-32 James 1 Ezekiel 33:21-33, Ezekiel 34, Ezekiel 35 James 2 Ezekiel 36, Ezekiel 37 James 3 Ezekiel 38, Ezekiel 39 James 4 Ezekiel 40 James 5 Ezekiel 41, Ezekiel 42 1 Peter 1, 1 Peter 2:1-3 Ezekiel 43, Ezekiel 44 1 Peter 2:4-45 Ezekiel 45, Ezekiel 46 1 Peter 3 Ezekiel 47, Ezekiel 48 1 Peter 4 Daniel 1, Daniel 2:1-23 1 Peter 5 Daniel 2:24-49: Daniel 3:1-12 2 Peter 1 Daniel 3:13-30, Daniel 4:1-18 2 Peter 2 Daniel 4:19-37, Daniel 5:1-16 2 Peter 3 Daniel 5:17-31, Daniel 6:1-28 1 John 1, 1 John 2 Daniel 7, Daniel 8:1-14 1 John 2:12-27 Daniel 8:15-27, Daniel 9:1-19 1 John 2:28-29, 1 John 3:1-10 Daniel 9:20-27, Daniel 10, Daniel 11:1 1 John 3:11-24, 1 John 4:1-6 Daniel 11:2-35 1 John 4:7-21 Daniel 11:36-45, Daniel 12 1 John 5:1-21 Haggai 1, Haggai 2:1-23 2 John 1:1-13 Zechariah 1-4 3 John 1:1-14 Zechariah 5-8 Jude 1:1-25 Zechariah 9-11 Revelation 1 Zechariah 12-14 Revelation 2:1-17 Esther 1, Esther 2:1-18 Revelation 2:18-3:6 Esther 2:19-23, Esther 3-5 Revelation 3:7-22 Psalm 124:1-8 Psalm 125:1-5 Psalm 126:1-6 Proverbs 27:23-28:6 Psalm 127:1-5 Psalm 128:1-6 Psalm 129:1-8 Proverbs 28:7-17 Psalm 130:1-8 Psalm 131:1-3 Psalm 132:1-18 Proverbs 28:18-28 Psalm 133:1-3 Psalm 134:1-3 Psalm 135:1-12 Proverbs 29:1-9 Psalm 135:13-21 Psalm 136:1-12 Psalm 136:13-26 Proverbs 29:10-18 Psalm 137:1-9 Psalm 138:1-8 Psalm 139:1-10 Proverbs 29:19-27 Psalm 139:11-16 Psalm 139:17-24 Psalm 140:1-5 Proverbs 30:1-10 Psalm 140:6-13 Psalm 141:1-10 Items Currently Needed Food Canned Fruits Canned Soups & Stews Canned Protein Items (tuna, corned beef hash, chili, peanut butter-especially crunchy) Soy Milk/Rice Milk Vegetarian Items (tofu, canned beans, soups, chili) Pasta and Rice Canned Vegetables (pasta sauce, peas, olives, etc.) Cooking oil Other Items Bar Soap Toothbrushes and Toothpaste Toilet Paper Shampoo Deodorant Pet Food Paper and Plastic Grocery Bags Baby Diapers, Food, Formula and Wipes
