While their blood brothers in
New York profited from prohibition
and thirsty yanks, our men back
home were making their own
unwritten laws right here on the
streets of Dublin. It was beers for
the working men, toss schools
for the corner boys and pints of
cheap Red Biddy for the rest.
Half the city was clothed with the cast offs
of the other half. Eight to a bed, overcoats
for blankets, no wonder life was lived in
the streets. The marauding Animal Gangs
took the names of their home turf: Ash
Street, Stafford Street, Gardiner Street,
all brawling just for the hell of it… and
for some kind of escape from the grinding
poverty in those festering tenements.
These guys lived and died by that mafia rule
‘omertha’
– keeping it schtum
no matter what.
The only cop who could handle them was
Jim ‘Lugs’ Brannigan. Lugs was blessed
with an impressive pair of cauliflower
ears and a tidy left hook from his amateur
boxing days. He put manners on even the
toughest brawlers. From the scuffles at
Harold’s Cross Greyhound track to the
Battle of Baldoyle, Lugs really was the
stuff of urban legends.
The street corners heaved with every
specimen of humanity. The landlords
looking for next week’s rent, the shellshocked soldiers trapped in some kind of
living hell, screaming as imaginary bombs
whizzed above their heads. The organ
grinders and penny hustlers – you could
even hire a child to beg for you!
Johnny Forty Coats, Hairy Lemon, Mary
Wallpaper, Jembo No Toes, all part of
Inner City urban folklore. Then there was
Bang Bang who kept his own version of
law and order on the streets. Riding the
trollies from Parnell Street to the Quays
he’d jump on board, shooting passers by
with a church key. ‘Bang, Bang! You’re
shot. If yeh don’t die, I’m not playin’.’
And what about the Grand Dames of the
infamous Monto Red Light District?
Becky Cooper, Polly Butler and May Oblong
had things pretty much sewn up there.
Tyrone Street, Foley Street, Beaver Street and
Faithful Place were home to nearly 1,600
‘poor unfortunate girls’.
All classes of customers were catered
for - gentlemen, lords, soldiers from the
Royal Barracks. Rumour even has it that
King Edward VII lost his innocence in this
heartland of whores and despotic madams.
They used to roar out the windows at the
street kids below, lowering cans filled with
money down on strings to get cigarettes,
matches or gargle from the pub.

MUSHATT
the man with all the cures, dispensed
lotions and tonics from his tenement
chemist’s shop on Francis Street, in the
heart of the Liberties.
Hippo Wine and Squills for coughs, Mushatt’s
Foot Paste; people came from all over the city
for his legendary hangover cure – Black Draft.
So let’s raise a glass to the people who made
Dublin what it is. The profiteers, the Robin
Hoods, the chancers, the hard grafters,
the beasts, the savages and the saviours.
Let’s celebrate the magnificent stories and
the grim reality and add our own little bit
of history to the mix, right here in
Fade Street Social.

Shebeens were rife in the tenements too.

placed in the window – a nod and a wink to
a thirsty man. At Fade Street Social there’s
