Amulet Bag
Materials:
15 yards #8 Perle Cotton
6 strands Size 11 Seed Beads
1 Pair 0000 Knitting Needles
Assorted decorative beads for embellishment
Small Ribbon Rose (if desired)
Tapestry Needle
Big Eye Needle
Scissors
Rag
Stringing the Beads:
Beads from strands must be transferred to the Perle Cotton.
Gently separate 1 strand. Tie a slip knot in one end of it and
slip it over the end of the Perle Cotton. Gently tighten around
the Perle Cotton, but don’t pull so tight as to make a knot. Slide
beads from strand to Perle Cotton. Thread 5 strands of beads
onto the Perle Cotton (beads can also be threaded onto the Perle
Cotton with a Big Eye Needle). Slide beads down the Perle
Cotton for several yards. Wrap around a folded rag to keep from
becoming tangled.
Knitting the Bag:
Cast on 14 sts. K 1 row without beads.
The rest of the bag is worked by knitting 2 sts, sliding correct
number of beads up to needle, working 2 more sts, etc. (the beads
lie between sts). End each row with 2 sts.
Pattern:
Work 8 rows with 1 bead between every two sts
Work 8 rows with 2 beads between every two sts
Work 8 rows with 3 beads between every two sts
Work 9 rows with 4 beads between every two sts
Work 1 row with 30 beads between every two sts (this will be the
fringe)*
Work 8 rows with 4 beads between every two sts
Work 8 rows with 3 beads between every two sts
Work 8 rows with 2 beads between every two sts
Work 8 rows with 1 bead between every two sts
Knit one row without beads; cast off all sts.
Finishing:
Weave in loose threads. Make necklace chain from remaining
beads:
Cut 7’ of Perle Cotton. Thread Big Eye Needle to center of the
strand (thread is doubled over)
String one decorative bead, place it about 8” from end of thread
(don’t knot the end of the thread)
String 25 seed beads
String a group of decorative beads
String 25 seed beads.
Do this until you have 4 groups of decorative beads (plus the
beginning bead).
String about 8-9” of seed beads for back of neck
Repeat previous groups of decorative and seed beads in reverse
order.
Total length of beaded area of necklace should be about 24-26”
Cut Big Eye Needle off, thread Tapestry Needle
Turn bag inside out and line up seams. Sew seam with free end
of necklace chain from top of side seam to bottom, secure loose
ends. Do this for both sides of bag.
Gently turn bag right-side out. Sew Ribbon Rose to front of bag
if desired.
* If you don’t want fringe or want to sew a fringe on after the
bag is complete, do this row with 4 beads between sts.
