Frances Ashton Charity
Help for serving and retired members of the Clergy of the Church of England and spouses of clergy now deceased
Since 1747 Frances Ashton’s Charity has been helping those who spend their lives serving God and their parish
The Frances Ashton Charity will consider a grant for almost any purpose which is causing financial hardship. For example, we
could help with:
The cost of a new pair of glasses
The cost of a family holiday
A respite care break for a disabled family dependant
The cost of repairing a broken boiler
Particular priorities for support include unforeseeable emergencies, medical or care needs for the applicant or their dependents. In
some cases, the trustees may be able to help at any point during the year. There are only a few exceptions where the Charity is
unable to help.
If you are a serving or retired member of the clergy of the Church of England or the widow/widower of a member of the clergy who
has passed away and you have a hardship, please ask us for an application form and the full guidance.
For an application form and guidance please contact Georgina Fowle, who is the trust administrator.
Application deadline: 1st June 2013

Parent Pioneers - Volunteer Family Mentors expression of interest
Mencap are seeking Expressions of Interest from Voluntary and Community Sector organisations, who could offer volunteer mentoring and advocacy support to families or people with learning disabilities or difficulties in Northumberland, to ensure the best
possible outcomes for the families. Expressions of Interest could be from individual organisations or from a partnership of local
services.
Parent Pioneers offers a model of support to parents with a learning difficulty/disability to access Parenting Courses that suit their
needs and styles of learning. The project will also offer volunteer parent mentoring support to families so that they can put the
knowledge and skills they learn from the course into their daily lives. The project is led by Mencap and is a consortium of sector
specialists including Mellow Parenting, a reference group of parents with learning difficulties/disabilities run by the Elfrida Society.
Independent evaluation of the project is being undertaken by Norah Fry Research Centre, University of Bristol.
Northumberland County Council and Islington Council have been selected as the two pilot areas for Parent Pioneers, which has
been funded by the Department of Health to run from April 2013 – March 2015. Agencies submitting an Expression of Interest
need to be able to work across the County of Northumberland, working in partnership with children and family Health services,
Early Years services and local Voluntary and Community services to offer families support, where a parent has a learning disability
or difficulty.

A prayer for farmers struggling to recover from the
severe weather (written by Canon Dr Jill Hopkinson,
the CofE’s National Rural Officer based at the Arthur
Rank Centre in Stoneleigh):
Risk Assessments
Gracious God,
you provide us with food from the earth
through the work of human hands:
after a poor summer and long winter,
we pray for all those who grow and produce
our food in the most difficult conditions.
We remember the physical hardships and
distress of farmers dealing with livestock
that have died,
and those who are still to sow crops to harvest this year.
Bless the work of all those who care for your
land and animals so that we may have food
to sustain us.
This we ask through your Son, Jesus Christ
our Lord.
Amen.

With the approval of Her Majesty The Queen, the following Prayer is to be incorporated in the
Service of Thanksgiving on the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty’s Coronation in Westminster
Abbey on Tuesday 4th June 2013.
The Archbishops of Canterbury and York have commended it for use in either the traditional or
modern language version throughout the Church of England. Other churches are also welcome
to use this prayer.
Traditional language:
Almighty God,
who through anointing with the oil of gladness at the hands of priests and prophets
dost strengthen thy chosen servants with the gifts of thy Holy Spirit:
be pleased to accept our joyful praise as with united voice
we give thanks for the long and glorious reign
of our Sovereign Lady Queen Elizabeth;
and to receive our humble prayer that, by renewing thy blessings,
thou wilt pour upon her thy choicest gifts,
and upon all thy people the spirit of humility and service,
shown forth in the life and death of him who is the anointed King of all,
our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
Amen.
Modern language:
Almighty God,
at the hands of priests and prophets
you anoint your chosen servants with the oil of gladness
and strengthen them with the gifts of your Holy Spirit:
accept our joyful praise as with united voice
we give thanks for the long and glorious reign
of our Sovereign Lady Queen Elizabeth.
Renewing your blessings, pour on her your choicest gifts,
and on all your people the spirit of humility and mutual service
shown in the life and death of him who is the anointed King of all,
our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
Amen.
