XV, NO. 68 International Games Day Saturday, November 19, 10:00 am-12:00 pm and 2:00-4:00 pm All Ages International Games Day is a day to encourage gamers of all skill levels and ages to engage in a day of game play. See pages 4 & 6 for scheduled activities for children, teens and adults. During these times, space is also available for participants to bring and play their own tabletop, RPG, board, and card games. Radio & Television Historical Society Documentary on Telefunken Underway Where were you or your family members in 1917? What are your memories of the Telefunken Radio Station? Come to the Library on Saturday, December 17, at 11:00 am to share your memories, photos and documents with the Radio & Television Historical Society. These recordings will become part of a documentary on the Telefunken Radio Station being being developed by writer/ director Joseph Sikorski with the assistance of the Society. Call the Library to register 631-589-4440 dial 4. x An American Holiday in Song Sunday, December 11, 2:30-3:30 pm Join one of America’s finest champions of folk music, Caroline Doctorow, daughter of renowned author E.L. Doctorow for “An American Holiday in Song.” An uplifting acoustic music holiday program that includes standards such as “Winter Wonderland”, “Frosty the Snowman”, “Dreidel Song”, “Let It Snow” and “Deck the Halls”, as well as Caroline’s original holiday songs all delivered in her unique folk style. Sing-alongs encouraged! The display case in the library will highlight our membership drive. Any member of the Friends who renews his /her membership beginning July 1st or anyone who becomes a new member will be entered into a raffle. Three winners each will receive gift certificates worth $50.00 for Sayville shops that are members of the Greater Sayville Chamber of Commerce. The drawing will be on Saturday, November 19th. Membership forms may be found on our website and in the library at the Adult, Children and Circulation Desks. Mail your completed form and check to the library, attention to the Friends. Help us continue to support the many non-budgeted programs offered to patrons and residents at Sayville Library by becoming a member of the Friends. Circle October 29th on your calendar! The Friends are sponsoring a Halloween Family Concert by the New Inlet Chamber Orchestra to be held at Sayville Middle School beginning at 5 pm. The members of the Orchestra donate their time to bring music to Long Islanders. Tickets with suggested donations of Adults $10.00, Families $15.00, and MS and HS students $5.00 will be available at the door if you haven’t made reservations already. The Orchestra is comprised of 45 professionals, including music educators. You are sure to be delighted. Coming in your Halloween costume is encouraged. See you there! This program is designed for families who cannot attend daytime programs. The use of iPads and apps can support the development of both traditional early literacy skills and 21st century skills, including digital literacy. Digital literacy also enhances the learning experience for both pre-readers and readers. iPads may be checked out for 1 hour for use in the library. This new service was made possible by a donation from Dr. Alan Garett in the name of his brother, Andrew. Author Presentation: Heroes to the End Social Security Workshop Thursday, November 10, 7:00-8:30 pm Honor Veterans Day with former Newsday sports reporter and copy editor Jim Smith, who will discuss his self-published book Heroes to the End: An Army Correspondent’s Last Days in Vietnam. This book is a memoir of Smith’s 1971-1972 year long tour in Vietnam during which he wrote more than 75 articles for the Stars and Stripes newspaper.
