SAYVILLE LIBRARY Happenings MARCH – APRIL 2015 ATTENTION 20-30 SOM ETH I NGS! The library is seeking to enhance services to people in their 20’s and 30’s with new, innovative programming and events! Spread the word, bring a friend or meet some new ones at our first meeting on Saturday, March 28 at 12:30 pm! We will brainstorm ideas for exciting things to do and places to visit! VOL. XV, NO. 58 The Precisions Doo-Wop Concert Sunday, April 19, 2:00-3:00 pm The Precisions, former Golden Crest Records recording artists, perform music from the 50s, 60s, and 70s, including their hit single Someone to Watch Over Me. One of Long Island’s renowned bands, The Precisions are known for rich, stylish vocal arrangements and bootstomping rhythms. Dancing is allowed! After our organizational meeting, it is Game On! until 4:30 pm. Bring a friend or come solo for an afternoon of board games galore. We will have Ticket to Ride, Settlers of Catan, Munchkin, Last Night on Earth, and so much more! Refreshments will be served. Books and Bites Wednesday, April 29, 6:30-8:00 pm Join us at American Cheese on Railroad Ave. in Sayville for a fun night out of laughter and book discussion. Read the book: The Interestings by Meg Wolitzer and come ready to love it or hate it! We will be providing appetizers as part of the book discussion. If you wish to purchase your own drink or additional cheese-fare, feel free! COMING SOON A MakerLab Club at Sayville Library! Sayville Library submitted an application to the MakerLab Club, an initiative of 3D Systems, in collaboration with the Young Adult Library Services Association and the Association of Science and Technology Centers, and has been awarded two 3-D Printers. Two Architects will talk about what it’s like to design using state of the art 3D modeling software. They will also present various college and career options not only in architecture, but also in construction related professions such as construction management, interior design and civil engineering. In addition to using computers software, architects often sketch their ideas to work out a problem or communicate their design intent. Irish Immigration to America Monday, March 16 7:00-8:30 pm In the 1800’s laws imposed on the Irish by the English left the population vulnerable when the potato blight struck in 1845, leading to famine. This forced many Irish people to emigrate to many corners of the world on unsafe ships referred to as “Famine Ships” or “Coffin Ships.” Many died on the three-month journey to America due to starvation, fever or other diseases. Join native Irishman Tom O’Reilly to hear the fascinating story of their harrowing journey.
