e British Columbia Girls Choir
(BCGC) is widely recognized as one of
the finest treble voice choirs in North
America. e choir is based in Metro
Vancouver and offers a progressive
system of choral training for singers
ages six to young adult. Each year, over
150 girls and women achieve a high
level of artistry and thrive under the
leadership of an exceptional director,
two professional accompanists and a
choreographer. e singers participate
in concerts, recordings, festivals, camps
and community outreach events. At
these performances, you will hear all
levels of the organization; some of these
singers have been with BCGC for over a
decade – well over half of their life!
Highlights of previous years have
been: representing our province at the
National Music Festival; three 2010
Winter Olympic appearances; and being
awarded the top prize for the best
performance of a Canadian work at the
renowned International Choral
Kathaumixw. e girls have made guest
appearances with such artists as the
Vancouver Chamber Choir, Elektra
Women’s Choir, Chor Leoni Men’s
Choir, opera superstar Ben Heppner,
and the world famous singing group,
e Nylons.
2014, the choir’s tenth anniversary
year, was celebrated with a world
première performance of Malala –
Pakistani Girl, a piece written especially
for the girls by British Columbian
composer, Larry Nickel. e subject of
this piece is Nobel Peace Prize winner
and activist for the rights of young
giving voice, enriching lives,
creating extraordinary music
women everywhere – Malala Yousafzai.
An important mandate of BCGC is to
perform the music of Canadian
composers beyond our borders. e
choir has been fortunate to tour
Australia, China, Germany, Scotland,
England and Costa Rica. In 2014, the
girls traveled to Oregon as guests of a
festival for young women – the Pacific
International Children’s Choir Festival –
which is affiliated with the prestigious
Oregon Bach Festival.
Most recently, in July 2015, the tour
choir journeyed through Holland,
Austria, Croatia, Slovenia and Italy.
BCGC was hosted by Croatia’s top girls
choir – the Zagreb Mozartine Choir.
Over the 17 day tour, the girls gave
performances in cathedrals, concert
halls, a Roman amphitheatre, a cave, a
castle, and in the gardens where e
Sound of Music was filmed. BCGC even
appeared live on Croatian national
television – a full eight minutes on the
country’s morning show! e singers
also accepted an invitation to the Cantus
Music Festival in Salzburg, with
performances at the Mozarteum and
Salzburg Cathedral. ere, they met
choirs from Australia, Germany,
Belgium, Switzerland, the Netherlands,
Greece and the USA.
As well as touring, BCGC has hosted
the Australian Girls Choir, the
Wakayama Children’s Choir of Japan
and Juventus Vocalis from Germany.
BCGC has made many ‘choir friends’
from all over the world.
Most recently, the girls were chosen to
represent the Vancouver Kiwanis Choral
Festival, via recording, at the
Performing Arts BC Festival. Allegria
and Zephyra participated in a
tremendously successful community
outreach concert, benefiting the
Downtown Eastside Women’s Shelter. A
special collaboration with one of
Vancouver’s newest ensembles, the Sea
to Sky Symphony, and the Vancouver
Art Gallery is coming at the end of June.
And of course, preparations are already
in the works for the 2016 – 2017 season
with two mini-tours, a new
commissioned piece, guest appearances,
a national choral competition, as well as
all our usual performances!
ank you for being with us. e girls
hope that you have enjoyed their work.
More importantly, all of us at BC Girls
Choir – singers, staff and board of
directors – thank you for your
continuing support of choral excellence
for young women.
Artistic Director Fiona Blackburn
Fiona’s long and varied career as a singer
has resulted in her acquisition of a deep
knowledge of vocal and choral
pedagogy. Fiona holds three degrees
from the University of British Columbia:
a Master of Music in Choral
Conducting; a Bachelor of
Music in Voice Performance;
and a Bachelor of Education
in Secondary Music, for
which she was awarded a
Don Wright Scholarship for
excellence in choral
education. Fiona is an
adjunct professor at UBC,
teaching the choral pedagogy course
through the Faculty of Education. She is
also on the faculties of the Vancouver
School Board’s Artist in Residence
Programme and the BC Choral
Federation’s summer intensive Choral
Directorship Course.
Fiona has sung with many of this
country’s leading musical ensembles and
is known for her talents on the opera
and musical theatre stage, in concert
halls, and even on cruise ships. Her
classical performances have been
recorded and broadcast nationally on
the CBC; and her ‘Celtic-fusion’
recordings have been sold in Europe and
North America.
In the past 15 years, Fiona has been
making a mark in the world of choral
conducting, leading choral
and vocal workshops, honour
choirs, and adjudicating at
music festivals.
Fiona
acknowledges the
support of many
mentors, who have
helped to shape
her understanding
and love of the choral art, in
particular: Maestros Jon
Washburn, Bruce Pullan,
Henry Leck and Dr. Graeme Langager.
Her aim is to create an environment in
which each singer may explore his or
her full vocal potential, while singing
choral literature that is rich in history
and poetry; significant as ‘choral
masterpieces’; moving,
thought-provoking and upliing; and,
just as important, is fun!

“My advice to young people who want to find happiness now and in the future is… sing in a choir like the BC Girls Choir.
You’ll find music, poetry, languages, feelings, tolerance and understanding, friendship, world cultures and history,
teamwork, poise, confidence, stage presence and so much more. It will enrich your life now and for many years to come.”
– BC Girls Choir’s Honourary Patron, Jon Washburn, CM
World renowned conductor and Artistic Director, Vancouver Chamber Choir
Initially, I had thought that an interesting ‘theme’ for this
concert would be to find pieces about birds. I didn’t have to
look long before I found plenty of music incorporating texts
and poetry about flying. It must have to do with the idea
that birds taking flight are blithe and free. en a wonderful
piece came across my desk, with a poem that I knew the
girls would love; e Dream Keeper, by Langston Hughes:
Bring me all of your dreams,
You dreamers,
Bring me all of your
Heart melodies
at I may wrap them
In a blue cloud-cloth
Away from the too-rough fingers
Of the world.
We had great discussions about just who the keeper of our
dreams is; another being or perhaps, we ourselves? We also
talked about how easy it is for our dreams to be dashed and
also how important it is that we never stop dreaming.
And what about all those birds? Well, it was fun to see how
many we could find in our music. Here is our list:
• e bird that sits on the branch and sings, and sings!
• Two firefly poems (not really birds, but they fly!)
• e little bird flying through our window
• Two poems about the lark that sings as she ascends
• A blackbird, a red bird, and two bluebirds
• A bat (does that count, it is really a flying mouse!)
• e chicks and ducks on Old MacDonald’s farm
• Sansa Kroma, the hawk from Ghana
• And a whole river of birds!
As these birds take flight, we hope your dreams do, too!
From Miss Fiona
and all the girls and women of BCGC

Bella Voce & Zephyra
Be Like the Bird . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . text: Victor Hugo (1802 – 1885); music: Abbie Betinis
Be like the bird that, pausing in her flight awhile on boughs too slight, feels them give way beneath her, and sings, and sings, and sings
knowing she hath wings. Abbie writes: “is canon was composed in 2009, just aer I’d completed cancer treatment. My parents
and I sent it out as our Christmas card that year, a tradition started in 1922 by my great-grandfather and carried on by his son
Alfred Burt, now famous for carols like Caroling, Caroling and Some Children See Him.”
Junior Choirs: Vox Angelica, Seraphim & Arietta
* Sing Me a Song . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . text & music: Leonard Enns
Our junior choirs remind us to sing, whether it be under blue skies or in the rain.
Ton é . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . text: traditional French tongue-twister; music: J & R Gilmore; arr: Susan Brumfield
Ton thé a-t-il ôté ta toux, ton te? Ta toux! Your tea, has it removed your cough?
Little Firefly . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . text: Grace Lee Frank Smith; music: Larry E. Schultz
If you have never seen a field of fireflies at dusk, now is your chance!
Vox Angelica
Little Bird . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . text & music: traditional American children’s song; arr: Leo M. Wanenchak
We used this piece to practise our solfege syllables: sol, mi and la. en we added our own little dance.
Arietta
Rise, Rise, ou Merry Lark . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . text & music: traditional Welsh folksong; arr: Ruth Elaine Schram
Introducing our newest ensemble! ese singers in Grades 6 and 7 make up our junior chamber, a subset group of the Seraphim
training choir for girls in Grades 4 – 7. Arietta, in Italian, means ‘little aria.’ anks to Donna Phillips, who helped prepare the
music with the girls.
Seraphim
Bird’s Courting Song . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . text & music: traditional Appalachian folksong; arr: Cristi Cary Miller
is is considered a pourquoi (meaning ‘why’ in French) song. A pourquoi story is a fictional explanation as to why something is
the way that it is. Here, the stories of three kinds of birds and a bat all share the woeful tales of their lost loves.
Descant duet: Erin Ryu, Neha Sen; small ensemble: Charis Powell, Tami Ryu, Anastasia Spencer
Vox Angelica & Seraphim
Old MacDonald . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . text & music: traditional children’s nursery rhyme; arr: Roger Emerson
One of the greatest jazz singers of all time, Ella Fitzgerald, oen had fun performing her exceptionally up-tempo version of this
piece. We have slowed it down a tiny bit so that we can deliver our dance moves – thanks to Miss Amy Laithwaite, our
choreographer, for bringing her fun ideas to us!
Seraphim & Bella Voce
Sull’aria, from Le Nozze di Figaro K. 492 (e Marriage of Figaro) . . . . . . . text: Lorenzo Da Ponte; music: W. Amadeus Mozart
A little song on the breeze. A gentle zephyr will sigh this evening. Under the pines in the little grove. e rest he’ll understand. is
duet is between the countess and her maid, Susanna, as they plot to expose the pranks of the countess’ wayward husband. You can
hear the overlapping lines, with the countess dictating a letter to the count, and Susanna repeating the words as she writes.
Laudamus te, from Gloria RV 589 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . text: Catholic mass; music: Antonio Vivaldi (1678 – 1741)
We praise ee, we bless ee, we adore ee, we glorify ee.
Many of Vivaldi’s compositions were written for the female music ensemble of the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice, a home for
orphans, where he worked. It is thought this setting of the Gloria may first have been performed entirely by girls – an almost
unheard of situation at a time when girls and women were not allowed to sing in public at all.
Allegria
* Chì Mi Na Mòrbheanna (e Mist-Covered Mountains) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . text & music: Iain Camshroin; arr: Allison Girvan
I see the big mountains, the corries, the mist-covered glens. I see, as I linger in the land of my birth. I am welcomed in the language I
cherish. I will receive love when I reach it; that I would not trade for tonnes of gold.
is beautiful Gaelic song (interesting that the melody is actually English) was a favourite of King George VI and was played at
President J.F. Kennedy’s funeral. A special note that the women of Allegria have learned and rehearsed this piece on their own –
this will be the first of many self-directed studies for Allegria in years to come. Allison Girvan, the arranger, lives in Nelson, BC.
Solo: Kia O’Kane; small ensemble: Simone Chandra, Georgia Masaki, Paige Ripley
e Lark Ascending . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . text: George Meredith (1828 – 1909); music: Linda S. Spevacek
is is a beautiful setting of Meredith’s 1881 poem, which has inspired composers for over a century.
Bella Voce
Svegliatevi nel core, from Giulio Cesare HMV 17 (Julius Caesar) . . . . . . . . . . . . . text: Nicola F. Haym; music: George F. Handel
In this operatic aria, Sesto has witnessed his father’s death and swears revenge. In the slow section, Sesto sees his father’s ghost,
who calls the son to action. is is a ‘da capo’ aria, meaning that the music returns to the beginning and is repeated with some
variations.
Hotaru Koi . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . text & music: traditional Japanese children’s song; arr: Ro Ogura
Come, firefly, over there the water is bitter; here it is sweet. Take the mountain road. Firefly’s father is rich; no wonder his tail is
shining. In the aernoon he hides in the grass; at night his lantern burns. If the firefly goes up too high, he might be taken away by a
swallow.
I See the Heaven’s Glories Shine . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . text: Emily Bronte (1818 – 1848); music: Andrea Ramsey
is piece has become our favourite of the season. e inspiring poetry is further enhanced by Andrea Ramsey’s beautiful
setting. She introduced this to us when we traveled to the 2014 Pacific International Children’s Festival (PICCFEST) in Oregon.
Solo: Georgia Masaki

e Dream Keeper . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . text: Langston Hughes (1902 – 1967); music: Rollo Dilworth
Langston Hughes is considered one of the most important African-American writers of the 20th century. e Dream Keeper
depicts the legend of a fictitious character whose role is to protect the dreams of those who are willing to hand over their deepest
passions to him.
Dreamers: Olivia, Neha, Amelie, Hannah, Mahalia, Nelia, Gabriella, Gabriela, Nomi, Danika, Valeria, Amelia

Peace Like a River . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . text & music: traditional American; additional text & arr: Douglas Beam
Peace like a river, joy like a fountain, love like an ocean in my soul! Enjoy!
Sansa Kroma . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . text & music: traditional Ghanese children’s song
Sansa, the hawk! You are an orphan, and so you snatch up baby chicks.
‘Sansa’ flies high above the village. He is all alone and searching for food. e children watch and are assured by the elders that,
unlike poor Sansa, they will always be taken care of by those in the village, and they will never be le alone.
I Want to be Happy . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . text & music: I. Caesar & V. Youmans; arr: Jill Gallina
e bright, cheerful melody is from the musical No, No Nanette (1925). It is partnered with the song A Smile Can Go a Long
Way, which was composed by Davis & Akst in 1923, and recorded by the Andrews Sisters in 1956.
Zephyra
In ese Delightful Pleasant Groves . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . text: anon; music: Henry Purcell (1659 – 1695); arr: Norman Greyson
Purcell composed sacred music, instrumental works and is the composer of the first English opera. is is one of his secular
madrigals, published just three years before his death. It is still, aer over 300 years, one of his most popular.
Over the Rainbow, from e Wizard of Oz . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . text: E.Y. Harburg; music: Harold Arlen; arr: Russ Robinson
e movie, Wizard of Oz (1939) has become an icon of 20th century popular culture. e song, Over the Rainbow, earned an
Academy Award for Best Original Song. Here is our jazzy four-part arrangement.
Zephyra & Allegria
Woodsmoke and Oranges . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . text & music: Ian Tamblyn; arr: Rebecca Campbell
Written in the style of a folksong, this piece tells of a canoe journey back to the rugged shores of Lake Superior;
ere’s something ‘bout this country that’s a part of me and you.
Ngana . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . text & music: Stephen Leek
is interesting piece is constructed of simple canonic figurations and ostinati (repeated rhythmic patterns). e indigenous
Australian text is made up of only four words: ngana (shark), mangana (fish), lina (water) and yah (welcome).
Finale – All Singers
River of Birds . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . text & music: anon
It Takes a Village . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . text & music: Joan Szymko
Here is what Joan Szymko, from Oregon, writes about her piece: “In adapting the West African saying, ‘It takes a village to raise a
child,’ I have sought to embody the cultural concept behind this proverb – that it is truly ALL the individual parts linked and
working together that create and support the whole.”

Tonight you are hearing one of Vancouver’s newest vocal ensembles! Zephyra Women’s Choir is just
completing its first season. Some of the singers joined because they had sung together as girls, and still
want to sing together. Some of the women you see onstage have just le BCGC and are in their first year
of university; others sang with a wonderful children’s choir called Amadeus, which eventually became
BCGC; still others were founding members of BCGC and came on the tour to China in 2006. One
singer is a ‘choir Mom’ and five singers are entirely new to the BCGC family – Zephyra welcomes them
and are happy that they have found a place to sing!
You may be curious about the choir’s name. In Greek mythology, a ‘zephyr’ is a light breeze coming
from the west. Being a West Coast choir, we thought this image was perfect. We have taken a feminine
form of the west wind, and made our own name – Zephyra, pronounced Zeh-fih-rah.
Our musical journey this year has included six events so far: two concerts with all the BC Girls Choir
singers, two fundraising benefit concerts (one for the Vancouver Kiwanis Festival and the other for the
Downtown Eastside Women’s Shelter), a workshop evening with Elektra Women’s Choir, and our very
first festival experience, where we learned a lot and got feedback and ideas from three great
adjudicators! We are excited to perform with Sea to Sky Symphony at the end of this month – our last
concert this year.
We are already eager to start planning next year, with a workshop and plenty more concerts. We also
want to grow Zephyra into a choir of 24 singers. If you know of someone who may enjoy a group such
as ours, please send them our way.

BCGC welcomes 48 girls to our choir family. e SpringSing participants were recommended by
their school music teachers, as interested and aspiring young singers. We met for four rehearsals in
May and now the singers are ready to join BCGC in our final concert of the season! In just six hours
of rehearsal, the girls learned many musical skills and also memorized three pieces. In addition to
this, the girls will sing two pieces with the BCGC singers. Well done, young ladies! We are very
happy to have you with us and I had so much fun working with you – I hope you had fun as well!
A note to all the music educators who work with the girls all year ‘round – thank you so much for
sharing your singers. BCGC will do whatever we can to support you and music education in our
province.
is educational outreach programme will continue next season with WinterSong in November 2016, on the North Shore; and
SpringSing in May 2017, in the Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge area.

Acknowledgements
Countless hours have been devoted to the running of the BC
Girls Choir. Each year an average of $30,000 is donated in the
form of volunteer hours and in-kind goods and services. e
Board of Directors and staff thank all the parents and choir
supporters who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to
ensure that BCGC continues to run smoothly. We could not
operate without you.
