The Dartmouth women’s hockey team returns to Hanover after a pair of road games to begin a two-game homestand, welcoming Hockey East foes Vermont (Dec. 11) and Providence (Dec. 31) into Thompson Arena. Most recently, the Big Green went 0-2-0 versus teams from the Bay State, dropping an overtime thriller at home to Northeastern, 2-1, and an ECAC Hockey and Ivy League showdown at No. 5 Harvard, 5-0. In the opener, the Green and White jumped out to a 1-0 lead against the Huskies as Karlee Odland found the back of the net with Lindsey Allen and Ali Winkel registering assists. Dartmouth would hold the lead until 13 minutes into the final period as Hayley Scamurra potted a goal to knot the contest at one. In overtime, Northeastern Lindsey Allen Plan well. Live well. Lindsay Holdcroft made 40 saves in a losing effort for the Green. In the finale, Dartmouth fell to Harvard inside the Bright-Landry Hockey Center despite holding a 25-19 advantage in shots on goal. Freshman Kennedy Ottenbreit led the offensive attack for the team from the Upper Valley with a game-high four shots on goal. WEEKEND TAKEAWAYS Allen’s first-period assist marked the third straight game in which she registered at least one point. Holdcroft’s 40 saves against the Huskies was the second-highest single-game total of her career and it was the third time the senior co-captain has made 40 or more saves in a Dartmouth sweater. Since becoming linemates, Odland, Winkel and Allen have combined for a pair of goals and four assists in three games. The Big Green are approaching some milestones as Mark Hudak has 198 wins and counting as the team’s head coach. Lindsay Holdcroft has 49 career triumphs in net for Dartmouth and is looking to become the fifth goaltender in program history to earn 50 victories. SCOUTING VERMONT Vermont enters the Upper Valley with a 7-7-4 record. On Wednesday evening, the Catamounts will be playing their first game in 10 days. Last time out, UVM traveled to Colgate and tied both tilts, 2-2, in a weekend series. Against ECAC Hockey teams this year, Vermont is 2-0-2, having topped Brown and Rensselaer on the road. Away from home in 2013–14, the Catamounts are 6-4-2 and riding a five-game unbeaten streak. Last season, Dartmouth skated to a 4-2 victory against their regional rival inside Gutterson Fieldhouse. Three of the four Big Green goal scorers in the contest were freshmen as Laura Stacey, Lindsey Allen and Ailish Forfar each found the back of the net. Odland added a marker as well and Holdcroft turned aside 22 shots to earn the victory. Under Hudak, the Big Green are a perfect 11-0 versus Vermont, while leading the all-time series 33-3-0. Offensively, junior Amanda Pelker leads the team in goals (12) and points (21), while classmate Brittany Zuback has a team-high 13 assists. Zuback’s seven goals is also tied for second on the team with Dayna Colang. Between the pipes, Roxanne Douville and Madison Litchfield have split time this season. Douville has appeared in 13 games, earning a 4-4-3 record with a save percentage of .913 and a goals-against average of 2.85. Litchfield has a mark of 3-3-1 with an .862 save percentage and a 3.76 goals-against average. continued on page 8 3 Insure the future. Personal and Business Insurance A. B. G C. Through Dec. 7 and 111 games played, the fourth-year center has scored six goals to go along with nine assists. What the numbers don’t tell is of her poise, leadership and commitment to the team. What the Espanola, Ontario, native brings to the ice means more to the Big Green then goals and assists. Through her tenure in the Upper Valley, she has led the team inside and outside of the rink with her tireless work ethic and fierce competitiveness. This season, Winkel has taken the seven freshmen on the squad under her wing, showing them and the other underclassmen how to successfully navigate the ups-and-downs of ECAC Hockey and Ivy League play. Although her playing career with Dartmouth is almost in its twilight, the 5-7 forward is enjoying her time with the team and the coaching staff. Recently, the senior co-captain took some time to sit down, answer some questions and reflect on her career. Coming out of High School what made you choose Dartmouth? Ali Winkel: I first visited Dartmouth when I was a sophomore in high school on a summer trip with my prep team. I loved Educating the Whole Boy . . . . . .The Cardigan Way Cardigan Mountain School sends its best wishes for a safe and successful 2013-2014 winter season. David J. McCusker, Jr., Head of School Dartmouth Class of 1988 Cardigan Mountain School Junior boarding and day school for boys in grades six through nine. 6 603.523.3548 Canaan, New Hampshire www.cardigan.org everything about the school and told myself that’s where I wanted to go. As I got to my junior year and was finally deciding on schools, it came down to the balance between academics and athAli Winkel letics. Dartmouth, being an Ivy League school, while at the same time having a great hockey program was the perfect fit. The added bonus being that it was the nicest campus I had visited. What’s the strangest thing you tell your friends from home about the Upper Valley? AW: How much people are involved in sustainability, as well as how active people are. Compared to my home town it’s interesting to see the wide age range of people involved in activity, i.e., running, squash. What’s your fondest moment on the ice with the Big Green? AW: When I scored a hat trick against Cornell in their rink my sophomore year. Not being a prominent goal scorer, it felt great to be able to contribute against a nationally ranked team and being able to share that with my teammates. If the team did superlatives (most likely to . . . or best . . .) what would yours be? AW: Most likely to get married first (courtesy of the team). What does a degree from Dartmouth and having competed as a Division I student-athlete mean to you? AW: Obviously, coming out of Dartmouth there are a lot of opportunities to start a career. In addition, the connections that you make can help this process along and I think that is something you can’t find at every school. That along with hockey has prepared me for what is next. Things like learning how to manage time, working with teammates, and having a good work ethic are all things that I have learned being an athlete. Not only does this degree and experience mean a lot right now, but it will also stick with me for the rest of my life. I will always be a part of this community. What does being a member of the Big Green family mean to you? AW: It means carrying on the tradition of Dartmouth Hockey and making people who have worn the jersey before me proud. It also means having 19 other sisters who I get to spend all of my time with. If you could play any sport besides hockey what would it be? AW: I would definitely play soccer. I grew up playing soccer since I was four years old and played all throughout high school. I would love to be able to play again. What’s your favorite word and why? AW: “Lades” a word I invented that means “ladies”; use it as a joke to refer to the team, as in “let’s go lades.” If they made a movie about your life what would it be called and who would play you? AW: The movie would be called Bad Grandma (play off of the new movie Bad Grandpa) and Jennifer Lawrence would play my character. What’s the most interesting trip you’ve taken and why? AW: When I went to Mexico, we visited the Mayan Ruins. This was definitely the most interesting because of their beauty and the history behind them. Innkeeper/F&B Manager Dan Wilson (GM of Firestone’s Restaurant 2000-2011) If you could meet any person in history, living or dead, who would it be and why? AW: Terry Fox because he is one of the most inspiring, historical Canadian figures. He lost his leg to cancer and decided to run across the country to raise awareness. When you have free time away from academics and hockey how do you like to spend it? AW: In the winter, I like to play squash or go snowboarding. During the summer, I spend lots of time on the golf course. What’s something that not a lot of people know about you? AW: My cousin plays in the NFL for the Seattle Seahawks. What’s your favorite holiday and why? AW: Christmas because this is the time of year where I get to visit all of my close family and relatives. Also, during this holiday, everyone is relaxed and in a good mood, which is something that comes along with the holiday spirit. If you could speak to one type of animal what would it be? AW: Dogs If you could have a super power what would it be? AW: Teleportation If you are doing play-by-play who would you want to be your analyst? AW: Gerry Dee (Sportsnet reporter) or Jay Onrait/Dan O’Toole (Fox Sports 1) Who’s the funniest on the team? AW: I would say there’s a tie between Katy Ratty and Laura Stacey. If one song could play every time you entered a room what would it be? AW: “Ants Marching” by Dave Matthews Band If you could trade places with any person for a week who would it be and why? AW: I would want to trade places with Oprah Winfrey because she is so generous and giving. It would be awesome to be able to help people in ways that she does. A year ago, the Big Green skated to a 4-2 victory as Forfar buried the game winner midway through the second period in Providence. Junior Sam Zeiss is the other returner to net a goal in the contest for Dartmouth. In net, Holdcroft made 32 saves in a winning effort for the Green and White. Under Hudak, Dartmouth has won all 10 of its matchups with the Friars, however Providence leads the all-time series, 28-22-1. Heading into December, Providence is riding a three-game winning streak. During their run, the Friars have outscored opponents, 15-5. After starting the season 4-3, Providence dropped seven in a row before topping Maine, 8-1, on Nov. 23. Against ECAC Hockey foes in 2013–14, the Friars are 2-4, having skated past Union and Brown. Offensively, Corinne Buie is second on the team with seven goals, while leading in assists (13), points (20) and power-play goals (5). Freshman Cassidy Carels has a team-best nine markers and other contributing forwards are Haley Frade and Molly Illikainen with seven assists, respectively.
