BIRTHDAY BLAST AT THE OBBO CLINIC
By Cindy McElrea
I wanted to do something special for my
birthday this year and
when I saw the OBBO
Clinic advertised I
thought “What better
place to be!” I talked
it over with my other
half and after a bit of
arranging we loaded up
and headed to Campbellville and the host facility
Stetson Stables for the weekend of August 16, 2013.
Clinicians Harvey Stevens and Loris Epis worked
with a group of about 20 riders under clear skies
and summer sun to improve reining techniques,
offer tips, change old habits, and do some serious
fine tuning.
Friday evening consisted of a general meet and
greet for participants as well as those who came
to observe and the many volunteers who made
the clinic possible. I don’t remember everyone
by name, but I do remember the friendliness and
easy camaraderie of the weekend. With riders
saddled up the clinicians started about 8:30
Saturday morning. They asked everyone their
reason for coming and what they wanted to take
home from the clinic. Participants were divided
into two groups both of which would have equal

time with each clinician.
Interactive sessions were
enjoyed where everyone
got to learn from each
other. Some serious learning took place in a relaxed
approach. A delicious lunch
of barbequed burgers and
salads was provided by
OBBO both days.
The clinic was a great success and a wonderful firsthand opportunity to learn and refine reining skills,
make new friends, and spend quality time with
accomplished instructors. To top it off, I was the
high bidder on a gorgeous show jacket from the
OBBO online auction. Happy Birthday to me!
I think it was a very successful and productive
weekend for everyone involved. Although I am
at the point
where I don’t
much look
forward to
birthdays, I
do very much
look forward
to the next
OBBO Clinic.

FALL 2013
REINING MANOEUVERS TRAINING SERIES
We ask ORHA’s top Trainers to take on one of the reining manoeuvers, outline common problems or issues and
offer us some advice on how to correct these issues.
LEAD CHANGES MADE EASY
By Jess Cofell
1. Describe the ideal reining flying lead change?
The ideal lead change is “when a horse lopes straight and comfortably.
He brings his chin in and his shoulders up while moving his back end up
and into the new lead. There is no fuss and no resentment.”
2. How do we achieve this?
I can’t stress enough that the horse must be going straight, must be
balanced from front to back, and that the rider must be straight and
out of the horse’s way. When I start to teach a horse to change I always Photo:
do it in a straight line. This could be down the length of the arena I am
working in, or out in a field. I simply lope on one lead then ask for the horse to move his hip over, the same
as I would for a lead departure, and to lift his front end. I PUSH my outside spur and never POKE at the
ribcage. Poking creates a tense ribcage rather than a relaxed, softly moving one.
3. How can we work changes at home?
When working in the arena preparing to show, I always make a straight line through the centre of the
arena, between the middle markers. If the arena is a big one, I lope seven strides straight across. The first
three are to get the horse straight and aiming towards the middle marker, then one stride to change leads,
then three more strides to get him straight again before leaving the line to start the new circle. Staying
straight after the change is imperative to the horse’s longevity in the show ring. If he thinks he will change
and always change directions, you will end up with a horse cutting the corners and building resentment
in the lead change. If the arena is smaller than seven strides through centre, this exercise can be done in
five strides. It’s very important to calculate the odd number of strides for setting up, changing, and then
setting up again.
4. What are some of the common problems with lead changes?
I feel strongly about not poking a horse in the rib cage to ask for the lead change. Avoiding poking the
horse can easily eliminate a lot of resentment that can show up in the form of horses anticipating the
change, kicking out during the change, and charging off after the change. In the last 10 years I have seen
a lot of people pulling the horse’s head down through the lead change. Only certain horses are built to be
able to change leads with a low head set and if they are not built this way, it can’t be forced. I prefer to
teach my non-pro riders to pull the horse’s head towards its body and not down. The horse must be loping
comfortably to change leads correctly with any degree of finesse.
Leaning in and looking down can create more problems than most people realize. I must emphasize that
riders must be balanced and sitting up with their shoulders even. If the rider is leaning down and in with
his/her shoulders, the horse’s natural motion will be compromised. I encourage my non-pro riders to find
a visual aid to fixate on while practicing. Lead changes don’t have to be as difficult as most people think.
It doesn’t have to be about having perfect timing or feeling the moment of suspension in the horse’s gait,
cueing at just the right time and for the stars to be aligned to get a correct lead change. Having good
timing can add to the manoeuver score and the finesse element, but most people need to focus on the
technical skill and the horse’s response when cued to move the hind end over independently of the rest of
the spine.

THE ORHA SLIDER
FALL 2013
PUT A SPIN ON IT
Photo: Ashley Morrison
By Ray Nitti
1. Describe the ideal spin?
The ideal reining spin is a manoeuver of precision and speed. While spinning a horse,
the ideal position is when the inside hock is planted firmly beneath the horse with the
outside leg driving and corresponding with the crossing of the forelegs in a constant
pace. This allows the back to arch, frees up the shoulders so they can be standing
straight up and down while the neck lays flat from the withers with approximately six
inches behind their ears tucked in the direction they are heading. The position of the
rider should be: sitting deep in the saddle, shoulders square with the hips, hand down
with the rider’s head turned in the direction they are heading and their legs hanging
freely. Throughout the manoeuver, there should be a beginning, middle and end. The
movement should feel smooth with a building velocity and a precise stop.
2. What are common mistakes made while performing this manoeuver?
A common mistake when performing the manoeuver is when there is too much steer and not enough
motion, which gives the appearance that the horse is being dragged into the turnaround. A second
common mistake is when the horse begins to travel in the turnaround, and comes to a halt away from
centre.
3. How can someone correct/fix these problems?
When the horse appears to be dragged in the turnaround because of too much steer and not enough
motion, the rider can correct the problem by simply slowing down. Dragging is a lack of commitment
in the manoeuver that interrupts the motion of the spin. Apply the outside leg at the same time as the
outside rein, assuring that the motion is fluid and that the horse doesn’t appear to be dragged.
The main cause of a horse traveling is that it is coming out of the proper body frame. One way of fixing this
problem is to simply back the horse up into a turnaround. This forces the back leg to stay stationary in the
turnaround and puts the horse back into the proper body position preventing the horse from traveling.
4. Describe 1-2 exercises we can do at home to aid in making our spins better.
As we know with all reining manoeuvers, the spin is obtained basically through body position. A great way
to work body position is to trot the horse in a tight circle in one direction, stopping them briefly and then
spinning them the opposite direction. A second exercise we often use to work the spin is to walk the horse
in a circle, counter arching them to develop full control of the horse’s body.

HOLIDAY GIFT IDEAS
By Laura Henderson
Wow!! The holidays are fast approaching and, if you
are like me, you probably haven’t started your gift
buying yet let alone finished it. So here is a quick list
of gift ideas for all those Reiners in your life. If you
are the only horsey person in your household, hand
this over to your spouse, kids, parents, friends, etc.
If you are one of those early birds who have already
wrapped their gifts – I wish I was you – maybe this
can provide you with ideas for next year.
Gifts that keep giving
• Subscription to a Magazine – there are lots
to choose from: Canadian Horse Journal, The
Reiner, Quarter Horse News, Western Horse,
Horse and Rider, AQHA Journal, etc.
• Lessons with a Trainer – there are a number of
trainers and coaches who
have special packages and
deals for the holidays.
• Training Videos and Books
– Andrea Fappani, Inside
Reiner, Shawn Flarida, etc. all
have a training DVD series.
So pick and choose or buy a
package – I’ll take them all
please!
• Gift Certs for the Farrier –
come on … everyone likes
getting shoes!!! So forgo
the Jimmy Choo’s and talk
to a farrier about a gift certificate. If they don’t have
one, make your own.
Gifts that get creative
• Deck the Halls - and their walls with equine artwork. Your own, a piece from a talented equine
artist, or make it personal and purchase a show
pic from our wonderful show photographers.
• Picture Perfect – along the same lines as the
above suggestion, schedule a photo shoot with
a photographer.
• Get Personal – with some personalized leather
belts, spur straps, or a cool leather sign.
• A Signature Look – make a custom sign for the
farm, barn, truck, or stall. Not into crafts? There
are a lot of companies out there that can design
and/or make it for you.
• Hair of the Horse – unique and beautiful, horse
hair jewelry is incredibly popular and a great way
to treasure our four-legged partners.
Gifts that give back
• Giving Back – make spirits bright by donating to
an equine rescue, charity, or other cause in your
recipient’s name.
• Support the Cause – many organizations and
groups out there (ORHA, SPCA, Whispering
Hearts, Destiny, the Mare that Stole our Hearts)
sell items that make great stocking stuffers.
Gifts that are ‘Out of the Box’
• Rein & Train – not a shopper? No problem! I
have a solution for you. Get all your gifts over
with in one shot – host a clinic! Call a trainer,
book a date, and give out invites as gifts. No
wrapping required. Works great as end of the
year barn parties too.
• Golden Tickets – just what I always wanted!!!
Tickets to the NRHA Derby, NRHA Futurity, or
even the NRBC (National Reining Breeders Classic).
• Let’s Associate – treat your loved one to an association membership! ORHA, NRHA, AQHA, etc.
• Pay It Forward – nominate a foal. OBBO, NRHA,
NRBC etc. Remember they expire soon, so get
them in before Dec 31.
• Baby Daddy – yes I went there. There are a lot
of great stallions available both in and out of
Ontario so give the gift of life. Just don’t put it
under the tree – I’m sure wrapped in the freezer
will be just fine!

Jo C Yankee, affectionately known as Barbie for
her flaxen mane and tail, is a sweet mare with a curious disposition. She has a funny
habit of sifting through things to find sticks and run away with them. When I asked
Nicole about her mare she had this to say: “I never got the chance to meet Brian
or Sally, but I can tell you all the nice things I’ve heard about them and about how
special Jo C is to Sally. I really wanted to make them (and everyone else) proud of
Jo C this year. I have come to really love the horse as an athlete and for her sweet
personality in the past year that I’ve been riding her. I’m excited to see what next
year brings for us, and to breeding her to Boomin Little Peppy.”
I’m sure Brian is looking down and smiling on Nicole and Jo C Yankee...

Our last two shows for 2013, the OBBO and Grand Finale, were nothing less than exciting. With the OBBO
including the two year old Pleasure, three year old Futurity and Derby classes, there was always something
to see. Unfortunately for the youth, not many members were present at this show.
The Grand Finale was definitely a great wrap up to the 2013 show season. The youth were excited to welcome new youth from Quebec and Nova Scotia. The youth class on Saturday was made more exciting with
the incentives such as scholarship money and belt buckles, and the competition was stiff.
Our final fundraisers, the boot and saddle shine and the entertaining stick horse race, were a great success.
We would like to thank Tristan Stevens for his great
support in running the boot and saddle shine yet again.
The stick horse race added some great entertainment
for all to see, and was sure to make memories. 2013
proved to be a great year for the youth, and we would
like to thank everyone for their genuine support.
We would also like to recognize Brianna and Jesse
Pecore for their great success while competing in
Alberta at the Canadian Interprovincial Equestrian
Championship (CIEC) - you both represented Ontario
extremely well!
Thank You

We didn’t get a few miles when we hear a __________ (6)
___________ (7) from the __________ (8). __________ (9)
quickly fixed it with __________ (10) and duct tape and we were
back on the road. Jeez, I hope the show goes smoother than the
trip here.
