jULY 24, 2016 - Holy Name of Mary
Serving San Dimas and La Verne and surrounding communities Staffed by the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Lord, teach us how to pray, not that we can pray better but that we can love more. July 24, 2016 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time My dear sisters and brothers, Today’s Gospel finds the disciples asking Jesus to teach them to pray. We join them as we go into the eye and heart of God. Page 2 Mis queridos hermanos y hermanas, El evangelio de hoy encuentra a los discípulos pidiendole a Jesús que les enseñe a orar. Nos unimos a ellos a medida que avanzamos en la mirada y el corazón de Dios. FOR YOUR PRAYER YOUR JOURNEY INTO GOD, MAY YOU BE GIVEN A SMALL STORM A LITTLE HURRICANE NAMED AFTER YOU, PERSISTENT ENOUGH TO GET YOUR ATTENTION VIOLENT ENOUGH TO AWAKEN YOU TO NEW DEPTHS STRONG ENOUGH TO SHAKE YOU TO THE ROOTS MAJESTIC ENOUGH TO REMIND YOU OF YOUR ORIGIN: MADE OF THE EARTH YET STEEPED IN ETERNITY FRAIL HUMAN DUST YET SOAKED WITH INFINITY. YOU BEGIN YOUR STORM UNDER THE EYE OF GOD. A WATCHFUL, CARING EYE GAZES IN YOUR DIRECTION AS YOU WRESTLE WITH THE LIFE FORCE WITHIN. IN THE MIDST OF THESE HOLY WINDS IN THE MIDST OF THIS DIVINE WRESTLING YOUR STORM JOURNEY LIKE ALL HURRICANES LEADS YOU INTO THE EYE, INTO THE EYE OF GOD WHERE ALL IS CALM AND QUIET. A STILLNESS BEYOND IMAGINING! INTO THE EYE OF GOD AFTER THE STORM INTO THE SILENT, BEAUTIFUL DARKNESS INTO THE EYE OF GOD En medio de estos vientos santos En medio de esta lucha divina tu viaje tormentoso al igual que todos los huracanes te lleva a el ojo, a el ojo de Dios donde todo es calma y tranquilidad. Una quietud mas allá de la imaginación! En el ojo de Dios después de la tormenta En el silencio, la oscuridad hermosa En el ojo de Dios Grateful for you just choosing to worship with us. Remembering you in prayer, with love, Fr. Rich Agradecido por sólo elegir adorar a Dios con nosotros. Recordandolos en oración, con amor, “How powerful prayer is! May we never lose the courage to say: Lord, give us your peace.” Pope Francis Page 3 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 24, 2016 PRESIDER KEY* C=Cronin D=Danyluk PD=Peter Dennis WM=Bill Moore *Schedule subject to change WEEKEND MASS SCHEDULE Saturday 5pm, and 1st Saturday 8:30am Sunday 8am, 10am & 5pm; Domingo 12:30pm(Español) DAILY MASS SCHEDULE Monday—Friday 8:30am (English) SATURDAY, JULY 23RD 5:00 PM C Kasey Igwedgbe, Escobedo, Levi Clare Eubanks, SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION Saturday 3:30pm (English) ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT SUNDAY, JULY 24TH 8:00 AM D Christina Coppack, Joe Calderon, Int. Page 5 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time Martha Ministry The members of the live out the Corporal and Spiritual works of Mercy by feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty and comforting the sorrowful. In the past the Martha Ministry have served the people of Holy Name of Mary with their generous gifts of nourishment and love. They provided meals to families after births, during illness, during and after hospitalizations and after the death of a loved one. With our new hall we have an increased need for this ministry to also help host gatherings after funerals. If you have been involved in this ministry in the past or are interested in joining please contact Jacqueline at Jacqueline@hnmparish.org or (909)599-1243 ext 111. Volunteer Connections by Jacqueline Trinkaus “Gathered with Mary as one family in the Eucharist, we are called to live the love of Jesus.” Some of our family are unable to gather with us on Sundays, so our Outreach Eucharist Ministers bring Holy Communion to them. The Outreach Eucharistic Ministers are practicing the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy through feeding the hungry, visiting the sick, visiting the imprisoned, and praying for the living. Each week these dedicated ministers bring prayer, comfort, community and Eucharist to 30 individuals in their home, 9 assisted living/retirement centers, 3 detention camps, 2 hospitals and 1 hospice. If you are interested in being a part of this very special ministry or if you or someone in your family has a need please contact me at Jacqueline@hnmparish.org or (909)599-1243 ext. 111. This is an excerpt from an e-mail I received about 2 of our Outreach Eucharistic Ministers. “Isabel and Jose Daniel Rodriguez have been taking my mother communion for more than 3 years now. They have followed her every Sunday and Holy Day to take her Communion to her home, to the hospital, to the rehab center, back home, to the hospital again, to home, to the nursing home, back and forth. They are The Best! The Lord put them in my life for a reason, and I am most blessed by their presence in my mother’s life and in mine.” July 24, 2016 Bible Study “The Eucharist in Scripture” Thursday Evenings at 7pm in the Damien Room—Join us! This study explores and emphasizes the importance of meals shared in faithful fellowship as part of our covenant relationship with God. Old Testament meals and promises provide the foundation for gospel meals with Jesus, culminating in the Last Supper as understood by Paul and in Matthew, Mark, and Luke. 'Breaking bread,' in Acts and the Bread of Life discourse in John are carefully examined. Six sessions. October 1st & 2nd, 2016 More details to follow… Helpers Needed Summer will soon be behind us and we will be back in full swing of parish events in our beautiful hall. We are always in need of volunteer servers and kitchen help. If you are interested please email me at Cathie@hnmparish.org. Thank you for the time you donate, it is greatly appreciated. July 24, 2016 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time Grief Support Please join us on Saturday August 6th at 9:15 in the Damien Room in the Hall following the First Saturday 8:30 Mass and Anointing for a special guest speaker, Galen Goben, on grief. Please join us for coffee and a light breakfast during this special talk about death as a journey, and its difficulty as we move out from the closeness of the death and the funeral. Time has this odd element to it in that we are in a new kind of time, so the death of a loved one can feel both immediate and so far away. However, others who are not so affected by the death, their time has not be impacted so much. So their lives carry on and yours changes, this is a part of the challenge. Galen Goben has been involved with grief and loss for over 20 years, beginning as a pastor, providing funerals for the community and now as Forest Lawn’s Grief Support Coordinator. In this role he is responsible for providing grief resources for the communities surrounding Forest Lawn’s nine locations. He meets with bereaved people helping them normalize their experience. He provides referrals to bereavement groups, therapists and books and publications that grieving people can access to give them the support they need to manage their grief in a healthy way. We hope you can join us, no reservation necessary, please email Brenda at brenda@hnmparish.org or contact me at ext. 137 if you have any questions. Page 6 The Shield Men’s Group had a very interesting guest speaker on July 12th. Monsignor Theophilus Okere, invited by life-long friends Lou and Barbara Loubet, brought us his life experiences as a man of God, having dealt with difficult situations around the world in chaotic times. Originally from Eboland (previously referred to as Biafra) in eastern Nigeria, he met his first outsider at the age of 5 - a German Missionary priest, and his vocation began at that moment. He spoke of the three seminaries he had started in his native land, his education at major universities in Ireland, Belgium, the United States, France and elsewhere. His lifelong involvement as a professor, as an advisor to the Vatican and the many ways he had supported the missionary efforts of many people, especially the Holy Ghost Fathers from Ireland. The monsignor is a vital, lively and articulate 80 years young, and it was a very interesting and informative night for all the men and women present at the Shield meeting. Asked about his opinion as to the main reason for the apparent world-wide decline in vocations to the priesthood, as well as in active Catholics and other Christian churches, he said there was a common denominator that ran throughout them all. “The problem is materialism,” he said, “the worldly among us are too wrapped up in ‘things’ - owning, using, proud of, and all that. Spirituality is the exact opposite of materialism! Those who crave power and possessions cannot be truly followers of Jesus, though they may try.” He expanded on this theme, and it was obvious that he was well informed and extremely dedicated to his life work as a shepherd to so many. He will soon be returning to his native country, but will remain also a world traveler, well aware of the difficulties that people of faith encounter, seemingly at every turn. The Shield Men's Group meets weekly in FF room 204/205 in the Faith Formation section of the Hall for All - 7 PM - and all men of the parish are invited to drop in to meet, greet and be welcomed! To submit a ministry article for the parish bulletin email it to bulletin@hnmparish.org The article must be a word or publisher file. Due to printing deadlines, submit article 5 days in advance from desired publish date. Join us for Pancakes, Bacon & Eggs, Coffee and Juice after the 8am and 10am Masses in the Sacred Hearts Hall. July 24, 2016 From the Director of Administration… St. Teresa of Avila had this to say about prayer: “The most potent and acceptable prayer is the prayer that leaves the best effects. I do not mean it must immediately fill the soul with desire… The best effects are those which are followed by actions…when the soul not only desires the honor of God, but really strives for it.” Her point is that prayer requires action. That is the same conclusion we might draw about stewardship as a way of life. Adding the phrase “as a way of life” implies that it is more than an attitude. It is something that should fill every moment of every day for us. That is what Jesus is trying to communicate to us — that we must be consistent and persevere in prayer. Our lives should reflect our ongoing prayer. You might say how we live our lives is a living prayer. That is what the Lord wants from us. As the Lord advises us, “Ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” July 16 & 17, 2016 Weekly Fiscal Year to Date YTD $ vs Last Year Offertory $26,381.50 $86,470.00 +$1,1472+15.3% Propagation of Faith $9,691.00 - - Thank you for your generosity to Holy Name of Mary Parish! Mass in Recognition of all Immigrants As we continue to celebrate who we are as Catholics and as people of faith during this Year of Faith, we recognize that we are an Immigrant Church and take seriously the Gospel call to welcome the stranger among us. We, the Church of Los Angeles, are mindful that we are a Church of many peoples, with different backgrounds, different stories, and different family histories. Each of us is unique, but our Catholic faith teaches us that we are all made in the image of God - imago Dei. Thousands of Catholic faithful gathered for a special Mass Sunday in support of comprehensive immigration reform at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles. The Mass in Recognition of All Immigrants, presided by Archbishop Jose H. Gomez, followed a procession of immigrants originally from Latin America and beyond at the Cathedral Plaza. Twenty-four attendees included children and teens from Holy Name of Mary Participated in this Special Mass.
