exist. The client can then go further to
find the details pertinent to each
aspect of each project.”

Shriners Are Changing Lives at Hospitals
L
esco is pleased to put its talents
and experience to work at the
Greenville, SC Shriners Hospital,
where a Lesco restoration crew is
cleaning, removing rust deposits, and
recaulking the exterior of the facility, in
a project of three months duration.
Lesco is proud to salute the
Shriners for the exemplary work they
perform.
Shriners Hospital for Children in
Greenville has been all about children
since it opened its doors in 1927. Over
40,000 children have been helped by
the Greenville Hospital, and the
numbers grow each day. Children
from six states receive care for
orthopaedic conditions that affect the
bones, joints, and muscles, whether
congenital or acquired by accident. All
care is completely without cost to
patient and family. No federal, state,
or insurance monies are received by
Shriners Hospitals, and 93 percent of
the operating budget is used directly
for patient care.
Greenville’s 50-bed pediatric
orthopaedic hospital was constructed
in 1989, and is one of 22 Shriners
Hospitals throughout North America.
The Greenville Hospital treats children
with routine and complex orthopaedic
problems, utilizing the latest
treatments and technology available in
pediatric orthopaedics, resulting in
early ambulation and reduced length
of stay.
Any child may be eligible for care at
Shriners Hospitals if:

Texas Wind Damage Gets Lesco Touch
B
eaumont, Texas was the site of a
severe wind storm in November
2003, and among the damaged
properties was the local Holiday Inn.
High winds damaged the southwest
corner of the roof parapet wall,
blowing off some 2,000 square feet of
wall cladding.
The owner chose Lesco to handle
the repairs, based on expertise in
EIFS repairs, experience at working
on operating hotels, and proven
results on previous projects.
The entire west wall, as well as a
portion of the south wall, is being
replaced. The entire parapet wall will
be coated with an elastomeric coating.

Stone Courtyard Must Be Safe Underfoot
A handsome stone courtyard and a fountain add additional touches of class to an
upscale shopping center in Charlotte’s South Park. The combination of rain, ice, salt,
and sun means regular maintenance is a necessity. Lesco’s Billy Lemmons makes
sure that the stone courtyard remains beautiful to the eye and safe under foot.

. My building is dirty. Is
pressure washing the best way to
clean it?
. Maybe. It depends on what your
building is made of.
Brick, stucco, and other masonry
materials are very porous, and high
pressure (2,000 psi) water blasting
can penetrate and shorten the life of
these materials.
It’s best to perform a test sample in
an out-of-the-way area first. Start with
a gentle method like a brush and
garden hose, and work up to more
aggressive methods.
If your building is metal, glass, or
precast concrete, the water
penetration will be less. But a water
blaster can still force water into joints
and cracks around windows and
individual panels.
Remember, a high-pressure
blasting process can expose your
building to up to 10 times the force of
a hurricane, so be careful,
and make sure the
operators are well
trained.

building. And
many are the
wrong ways. The
safest decision is

Work Begins at Historic
Godfrey Hall at Clemson
H
istoric Godfrey Hall on the campus of Clemson
University dates back to the early 1900s, and Lesco
began work in March restoring the landmark.
Work undertaken by Lesco includes restoration on
windows, recaulking, cleaning, and repointing and repairing
historic brickwork.
Lesco recently performed extensive work next door to
Godfrey Hall at Clemson’s historic Tillman Hall.

and that 2003 was a record year for safety.
All reputable contractors carry worker’s compensation
insurance to protect their customers and employees when
accidents happen on the job.
An employer modification rate (EMR) is used by insurance
companies to determine the rate a contractor pays. It is also
an indicator of the contractor’s safety record. The lower the
number, the better the record. Many large customers require
an EMR of 1.0 or less.
To keep your costs down and workers safe, hire a contractor
with a low EMR and never use a contractor without a proper
certificate of insurance. Lesco’s safety commitment has
resulted in steady improvement from a 1998 EMR of .88 down
to a 2003 result of .76.
