CHINESE BLACK SESAME DUMPLINGS
(TANG YUAN)
INGREDIENTS
black sesame filling
½ cup black sesame seeds, toasted
¼ cup granulated sugar
¼ cup butter, softened
DOUGH
2½ cups sweet or glutinous rice flour
GINGER SYRUP
3 slices of ginger
rock sugar
star anise (optional)
BLACK SESAME FILLING
grind the sesame seeds into a fine powder (a coffee grinder works well). a paste should form from the ground sesame seeds. mix with
the sugar and butter.
roll the mixture into small balls, about ½ in diameter. freeze on a plastic wrap-lined cookie sheet for at least 1 hour, until the balls have
solidified.
DOUGH
mix the flour with 1 cup cold water, until a soft dough is formed. knead together until smooth. keep covered until ready to use.
take a small piece of dough, flour lightly, and pat into a round disk. place the sesame seed ball in the centre, and gently pinch and roll
the dough around the ball. you should not be able to see the sesame through the dough. add more dough if needed.
once all the tang yuan have been formed, cook immediately or freeze on a plastic wrap-lined cookie sheet.
GINGER SYRUP
in a medium pot, bring 2 cups of water to a boil. add the ginger slices and rock sugar, to taste. cook for 5 minutes, then drop in the tang
yuan. maintain at a gentle boil. they will be ready once they are translucent and have floated to the top.
serve with the ginger syrup.

WELL BEING
MIND & SOUL
THE REAL LIFE RISKS IS NOT TAKING RISKS
we have a choice. it is the choice between really living, or merely existing. getting a job is a risk. crossing the
road is a risk. starting a business, a relationship or a family is a risk. eating in a restaurant is a risk. (some are
more risky than others!) life is a risk. so let’s get out on some limbs and pick some fruit.
BODY & SHAPE
POP A PILL
take a basic, one-a-day multivitamin (with 400 micrograms of folic acid if you’re of child bearing age). ditto a
calcium supplement; we need 1,000 milligrams a day until menopause and 1,200 thereafter (ask your doctor
if she thinks it should be more and when to start annual bone density scans). add b12 if you’re over 50.
