The Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS) builds on the PTLLS and completes requirements for those undertaking a limited teaching role. CTLLS explores practical and theoretical aspects of teaching and learning. Content includes planning assessment for learning, learning theory and communication in teaching and learning. Please look in the ‘fact file’ for each course to see the weekly schedule of teaching. Each HNC course is taught at the College by the programme team led by the Programme Director. You will be assigned a personal tutor with whom you will have regular, scheduled tutorials to support your academic progress. The courses are assessed exclusively through coursework assignments and, as the course is workfocused, you will be engaged in practical activity supported by theoretical studies in order that you are confident in both theory and practice. On successful completion of your studies there is the opportunity to have your HNC certificate presented to you at a ceremony, usually held at the Canterbury Campus of Canterbury Christ Church University. A Higher National Certificate (HNC) is a recognised Higher Education level qualification that develops your workrelevant knowledge and skills within the structured and managed environment of your chosen professional area. The qualification has intrinsic value to employers and is also an ideal springboard onto further study. It will enable you to demonstrate the confidence and capacity for employment in senior positions which require you to exercise some personal responsibility. It is still the case that a graduate who has completed an undergraduate bachelor’s degree (e.g. BA or BSc) course will be better equipped in an increasingly competitive jobs-market, and an HNC can be your passport to greater career options. On successful completion of a Higher National Certificate you have the opportunity to progress to a bachelor’s degree course in a closely-related area of study. Find out more at www.eastkent.ac.uk Your HNC will usually be recognised as equivalent to the first year of a bachelor’s degree, thus allowing you to fast-track onto the second year of the degree. An average bachelor’s degree takes two further years after an HNC to complete full-time, but many students opt to study part-time and fit their studies around their career. There is lifelong value and great personal satisfaction in firstly completing an HNC and then progressing on to complete a bachelor’s degree. For more information on Higher Education and the benefits of becoming a graduate please visit www.eastkent.ac.uk/highereducation. The College works in close partnership with Canterbury Christ Church University to ensure that our students progress to the highest possible level of study. There is an exciting range of degree courses available at the University’s Broadstairs Campus and at each of the University’s campus locations including at the main campus in Canterbury. While studying at the College there will be many opportunities to find out about Canterbury Christ Church University, its range of undergraduate degrees and the ways in which it can support your progression to becoming a graduate. For a detailed breakdown of the UCAS tariff points against all eligible qualifications for entry to Higher Education courses visit the UCAS website by following the link available at www.eastkent.ac.uk/ highereducation. Many mature students already meet entry requirements before they apply for their course because of previous study, work or life experience. However, if you are a mature student without formal qualifications you can still apply. We look at each application on an individual basis. 80-120 UCAS Points Generally a place on a Higher Education course is offered on the basis of grades up to a certain number of UCAS tariff points. A typical offer for entry to an HNC is between 80-120 UCAS tariff points. In order to meet an entry requirement of, for example, 80 UCAS tariff points, an applicant would need to gain two A-levels at Grade E OR achieved PP for a BTEC Level 3 Diploma. The College and University will not normally make an offer for a place on a Higher National Certificate (HNC) based on AS qualifications alone. Applicants studying on an Access to Higher Education course will need to achieve a Pass in their qualification in order to progress to a HNC. Advice for International Students East Kent College and Canterbury Christ Church University recognise a wide variety of non-UK qualifications which are accepted for entry to academic courses. If your academic qualification(s) or English language skills are not at the required entry level for undergraduate study on a HNC, we recommend completing the International Foundation Year which then progresses directly to a HNC. Your suitability for direct entry to the HNC course will be dependent on your previous qualification(s) and your current level of English. International students need to have, or expect to have, equivalent qualification(s) to those required for a typical offer to an HNC: the equivalent of between 80-120 UCAS tariff points which, for 80 credits, equates to two A-Levels at Grade E. The three possible routes for entry to a HNC for an international student are as follows: 1. If you have, or expect to have, equivalent qualification(s) to the value of between 80120 UCAS points in a relevant subject and IELTS 6.0 with a minimum 5.5 in writing or a TOEFL internet-based test score of 79 overall with 20 in writing, then you can apply directly to the Higher National Certificate; 2. If you have, or expect to have, equivalent qualification(s) to the value of between 80-120 UCAS points in a relevant subject but do not have IELTS 6.0 with a minimum 5.5 in writing, then you should apply for an IELTS course at East Kent College or a local language school such as Churchill House School of English Language; 3. If you do not have equivalent qualification(s) to the value of between 80-120 UCAS points in a relevant subject, or IELTS 6.0 with a minimum 5.5 in writing then you should apply for our International Foundation Year. Successful completion of the International Foundation Year provides guaranteed progression to the related HNC. Students at a school or college registered with UCAS All UK schools and colleges (and a small number of establishments overseas) are registered with UCAS to manage their students’ applications. Advice is available from your teacher or a careers adviser at your school or college. You fill in an online application and submit it to a member of staff. After checking your details, and having added your academic reference, your school or college submits the completed application online to UCAS. You pay online using a credit card or debit card. You may also be able to pay through your school or college. 2. Independent applicants in the UK Other UK applicants, who are not at school or college, apply online independently. It is likely that you are a mature applicant, who, unlike school and college students, cannot readily seek advice from your teacher, but can instead consult with various careers organisations (such as Connexions). You are responsible for paying the correct application fee, for obtaining and attaching an academic reference and for submitting the completed application online to UCAS. 3. International applications from outside the UK (EU and worldwide) Except for those whose school or college is registered with UCAS, individuals from the EU (excluding the UK), and worldwide, apply online independently. Advice is available from British Council offices and other centres overseas, such as your school or college. You are responsible for paying the correct application fee, for obtaining and attaching the academic reference and submitting the completed application online to UCAS. Direct applications On the day of the Interview Applications for the International Foundation Year and the Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector should be made direct to the College on an application form available from the College website www.eastkent.ac.uk. Think about the kind of questions that you might be asked. Why do you want to study on the course? If you are proposing to enter a particular profession after graduating, what do you know about this profession? The purpose of the interview is not to catch you out or trick you. We are looking for you to be able to tell us what you already know about your chosen profession. For all applicants, there are full instructions at www.ucas.com to make it as easy as possible for you to fill in your online application, with help text where appropriate. UCAS also has a comprehensive guide called Applying Online, which can be downloaded from www.ucas.com. The Personal Statement This is the most important section of your application. Try to include a wide ranging description of yourself that might include your study interests – what you enjoy about your current course(s). It is also vital that you say why you have chosen the subject you are applying for. Include any work or other relevant experience you have done and the benefits it gave you. With teaching or health-related subjects, if there is no evidence in your application that you have some relevant experience then you are likely to be rejected without an interview. You can also tell us about any career ideas you have for the future, and how your chosen course will fit into this. If you have interests outside school/college, list them: e.g. sports, theatre, travel, social activities, cinema, music, reading, or any other interest you have. Always remember that the interview is a two way process. You need to assess whether the College or University is the right one for you. Go to www.canterbury. ac.uk/interview for more information. Important information East Kent College has made every effort to make this prospectus as accurate as possible. This prospectus is published in advance of the academic year and some changes may occur between publication and the start of the academic year. The College reserves the right to discontinue any course or class or to alter courses or amend any other information, such as entry requirements, modules or special features, without notice. Consequently this prospectus is a guide only and does not constitute a contract and is not binding on prospective students, current students, the College or Canterbury Christ Church University. Applicants should not rely solely on the prospectus but should contact the College in person for up to date accurate information about courses and modules. Preparing for Interview If you have applied for a subject that requires an interview, here are some points that you might like to consider once you’ve received your invitation. Before the Interview You should read a copy of your application and read the prospectus and think about the questions that you might be asked. Select appropriate clothes for the interview that allow you to be comfortable but give a good impression. Check the time that you are meant to arrive and think about the travel implications, especially how long it will take you to get to the location of the interview, where you will park if you come by car, whether you are going to bring a friend or member of the family with you.
