By J.eDwiN BishoP editor@southernminnscene.com it could be the food, although i can get food lots of places. it could be the discount, i do work there, but i’ve purchased my food from them long before they employed me. it could be the environment, because in an already small and homey town, somehow the co-op feels even smaller and homier. it could be the amount of local product, the organic product, grass-fed beef or maybe just the mushroom selection, but all of that can be accomplished through csA’s or the farmer’s markets or even buying directly from local farmers. i don’t need the co-op for any of that, so the why do i shop there? Jonathan safran Foer wrote a book released in 2009 titled eating Animals. it’s a piece of non-fiction that essentially explores the cultural meaning of food and the social norms and practices of food consumption. essentially he is a vegetarian/sometimes vegan who has recently had a child, and debates whether or not he can force his own dietary habits on his son. this general question leads him to explore what has been dubbed “factory farming” in America and the general practices that lie there-in. he never, in my opinion, comes to any definitive conclusion in regards to his son’s dietary constraints. what he does do is shed light on “factory farming” practices and their impact on the animals in those farms, the environment and their end destination, our stomachs. “Factory farming” essentially grew out of the agricultural revolution and took root in the early 20th century, starting with chicken farms but soon spreading to pig and cattle farms. the discovery of vitamins, antibiotics and vaccines as well as the capability to ship product at a much larger scale and further than before caused some farmers to increase production by shrinking animal living space and caging a far larger number than their farms had ever processed before. the living conditions of these animals worsened year by year as the practice developed, with far too little regulation by the government watching over them. then came what i thought was the most interesting part of safran Foer’s tale. he discovered, despite being a vegetarian/ sometime vegan himself, some of the most interesting people he met along his journey were small, local farmers. they treated their livestock ethically, let them roam the pastures leisurely and slaughtered them humanely. i know, slaughtered and humanely don’t quite sound like they should be in the same sentence together, but safran Foer found that these small farms were doing exactly that. they cared about their livestock, they believed in practicing not only the ethi- cal, but what they saw as the correct way of raising livestock. they thought that just because an animal was eventually going to end up on a platter at sunday dinner didn’t mean they couldn’t have a good life leading up to that. in the end, the author comes to a conclusion he didn’t really set out looking for. the realization that it’s ok for you to eat meat, just as it is ok for him to be a vegetarian/ sometimes vegan. But if you are going to eat meat, he asks that you be responsible about it. that you look into where your meat is coming from, that it is not the product of a “factory farm”, that you take the time to investigate what it is you’re eating before you sit down and eat. that novel concept changed my way of thinking. i’m not going to claim i’m responsible 100% of the time. i’m not going to tell you i haven’t eaten at culvers in the past year. i’m not even going to try and tell you i haven’t bought a 6-pack of microwaveable white castle burgers recently. i’m only human, and therefore have some inherent weaknesses. But i will tell you that 9 times out of 10, 99 out of 100, i think about what i’m putting into my body. safran Foer, in the back material of eating Animals, lists a number of resources for investigating the food you consume. he provides a list of local farmers across the nation practicing the ethical treatment of their livestock. he implores you to spend some time thinking about what you buy on the shelves, what you feed your children, what Noel Van Tol Exhibit: 15-Nov, 1:00 PM, The Carnegie Art Center, 120 S. But ultimately what’s been the monkey on my back is the fact that, we might pour ourselves into the creation of a mix tape, but there’s no guarantee that the recipient will ‘get’ what we’re saying. maybe they will, but maybe they won’t. And maybe they will, but instead of being flattered, they’ll be totally creeped out. I realize I’m over-thinking the whole concept of a mix tape. Perhaps I’ve been on the receiving end of a few too many that give me a bit of a nervous tic (musical stalking, shall we say?!?) Basically, this is my friendly reminder that music impacts us all in different ways and it’s good to keep that in mind when sharing something *special* with someone else. As in, “’scuse me while I kiss this guy” (although we all know Jimi hendrix was really singing “’scuse me while I kiss the sky,” right?!?) A friend once told me she swore John Fogerty was singing “there’s a bathroom on the right” (rather than “there’s a bad moon on the rise”) and Foreigner’s “urgent” was somehow “sea urchin” (seriously -- how did she come up with that one?!?). In junior high I was certain (and shocked!) that christine mcVie was singing “You screw me until the sun comes up” (yes, I did it again) instead of “You rule me until the sun comes up” (from Fleetwood mac’s “say You Love me”). (For the record, I still sing it that way). And has there ever been a definitive consensus for manfred mann’s earth Band’s “Blinded By the Light”? how many of us sing something like “wrapped up like a douche when you’re rollin’ in the night”??!!? (the actual line? “Blinded by the light, revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night.”) okay, those are the obvious misinterpretations. Further discussion of the art of the mix tape. First of all, there’s the whole concept of a mix tape. I mean, if we’re going to be literal about the darn thing, tapes don’t even exist any more, do they? (And don’t even get me going about the reported pending demise of the cD....). can we even call it a mix ‘tape’? And then there’s all this (not-so) newfangled technology -- mp3s and ipods and playlist shuffle features have basically killed the concept of what a mix tape is all about. or, have they? Fortunately, there’s still a lot of us old schoolers out there like myself who still value the *concept* of a mix tape. And last month I talked about two kinds of mix tapes -- first, the ones designed to simply share a sampling of favorite tunes du jour with a fellow music aficionado, or provide the soundtrack to a special event or activity. It’s the other kind that I find myself thinking about a lot lately. the ones that someone has painstakingly poured their heart and soul into, whittling the song selection down bit by bit, crafting the flow of melody and mood from beginning to end. the kinds that are designed to express emotions otherwise perhaps too embarrassing or difficult or awkward to say. what I’ve realized about the latter is that things can become kinda tricky, depending upon whether you’re the giver or the receiver. (oh, my -- did I really just say that?!?). here’s the deal -- music may indeed be the ‘universal’ language, but its interpretations are infinitely varied. John Grant “Queen of Denmark” (2010) and “Pale Green Ghosts” (2013) Admittedly I’m late to the party when it comes to this amazing talent but I’m glad I checked him out. Possessing a regal baritone as golden as molten caramel (yes, that sweet, salty and smooth), Grant shares his innermost thoughts and desires, both good and perhaps not-so much. he’s a bit of an uber-confessor (the perfect example of what I’m talking about in this month’s column -- dude shares just a tad too much!), but the lush orchestration and occasional foray into sarcasm and self-deprecation balances out what otherwise might seem a little too earnest. Dammit, these albums make my heart swoon -- that’s how beautiful they are. But songs like “chicken Bones” (from ‘Queen of Denmark’) and “GmF” (from ‘Pale Green Ghosts’) also make me want to laugh (perhaps not haha funny, but with bitter irony), shake my fist at the world, and go out and kick some a**. “Pale Green Ghosts” was just named a nominee for a 2013 Q Award, considered one of the biggest musical honors in Britain. Ward W alking into a warm house filled with the scent of freshly baked cookies, snuggling under blankets with your siblings to watch “A Christmas Story,” adorning branches of the pine-scented tree with silvery tinsel – whether age 5 or 55, we all hold near to the heart warm recollections of the holiday season. The delicious undertaking of building a gingerbread house is a family tradition that began long before the boys were born, to the time when their mom, Kristin, and Aunt Laura were about their age. Back then, the boys’ grandpa, Luther Peterson, helped his two daughters create a yummy gingerbread house, and as their families grew to include Laura’s sons, Jake and Connor, and eventually Kristin’s sons, Ryan and Matthew, the boys, too, began taking part. In 2006 Luther passed away, but the anticipated tradition lives on in the spirit of their grandpa.
