There’s something for everyone, and I always feel invigorated and full of fresh new ideas when I get back from a holiday house tour or a local art show. It’s also a great time to turn our attention indoors to those longanticipated home improvement projects. I’ve been itching to tackle my entryway, the spot in the house that often gets cluttered with backpacks, extra shoes, misplaced mail and forgotten jackets. For me, a warm welcome sets the tone for a home, and right now mine is saying “Welcome to the chaos. Enter if you dare!” Whether it’s a cosy bench, inviting lighting or thoughtful accents, when the balance is right, an entryway envelops visitors with a warm embrace from the moment they step through the door. As I put this issue together, I couldn’t help but notice the relaxed, at-home feeling that surrounded me everywhere I went, from charming little country stores to contemporary showrooms. The Capon family home is steeped with a vibrant history, and homeowners Mim and Arthur have honoured the original intention that the home be shared by hosting events and welcoming all who come through their door. Once known as a country store, Luke’s for Home is now a destination for discerning home décor shoppers, but it radiates small town appeal. We even visited an alpaca farm and spent a little time roaming the barnyard with the doe-eyed sweethearts. I knew I was welcome when a few of them wandered up and allowed their photograph to be taken with me! I’m sure the treats clutched in my hand boosted my popularity. Whether you stay in and get cosy or get out there and enjoy the season’s activities, I hope you feel warm and welcome wherever you go. 303 MARY STREET EAST, WHITBY 0,&+$(/3(11(<67</(&20 Gina Makkar, Managing Editor gina@ourhomesmagazine.com Follow us @OurHomesMag 8 o u r h o m e s w i n t e r 2 0 1 3 / 2 0 1 4 rwin Tammy I Setting the Standard in Home Staging & Interior Design Interior Design Home Staging Accessorizing Furniture Arranging In-Home Colour Consultation Read more about Tammy and her latest design projects on page 14. 905-706-5254 Tammy@DesigningDurham.ca www.DesigningDurham.ca style picks WARM WINTER FINDS 1 P H O T O G R P A H Y B Y T R A C Y S H U M AT E Warm up your winter with this season’s style picks, whether you’re updating your space or adding thoughtful accents. 2 4 3 10 o u r h o m e s w i n t e r 2 0 1 3 / 2 0 1 4 1 BRANCHING OUT FLORISTS À>ÊÀÀ>}iiÌ Brighten up the season with a flower arrangement. Blackstock home. Although the three previous owners – a politician, a mystic and famed Canadian dancer Willy Blok Hanson – each left their stamp on the 22 acre property, it has been the Capons who have made the most changes. A tree-lined drive weaves away from the wrought-iron gates and arrives before the stucco-walled bungalow and gardens designed by Cathie Amos Exterior Design and created by Earth Art Landscapes Inc. A vestibule outside the front door offers the first glimpse of the talents of Tammy Irwin, principal designer at Designing Durham. Using botanical prints, wicker seating, and an oversized wreath, Tammy has merged the property’s spectacular and unique indoor and outdoor environments. “There are a lot of beautiful homes out there,” says Tammy, “but this home has a really good story.” Inside the door, it’s hard to know what to take in first; the statue and chandelier posed above a descending spiral staircase, the 16 foot vaulted ceiling, a half-moon stone planter, the western red cedar panel doors, two balconies where musicians once performed, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the property or the indoor swimming pool that waits a mere 22 feet from the front door. A child or a book or a painting or a house or a wall built or a pair of shoes made... It doesn’t matter what you do, so long as you change something from the way it was before you touched it into something that’s like you after you take your hands away.” – Ray Bradbury o u r h o m e s w i n t e r 2 0 1 3 / 2 0 1 4 15 feature Tammy brought the pool area to life with drapes, lighting and accents. ABOVE LEFT: Homeowners Mim and Arthur with designer Tammy. ABOVE RIGHT: The suspended vent hood in the kitchen is a dramatic focal point. 16 o u r h o m e s w i n t e r 2 0 1 3 / 2 0 1 4 LEFT: A spiral staircase with open risers descends to the lower level where a recreation room and lower level kitchen are found. BELOW: Rich wood doors slide open to reveal a pretty guest bedroom that connects to a Jack-and-Jill bath. BOTTOM: Built-ins surround the fireplace and house the televison, creating extra storage space and a lovely focal point in the family room. Arthur smiles when he tells of locals who have arrived with tales of the lavish parties thrown at the house in days gone by. Built in 1968 by Eastern European developers, the four bedroom house was designed with a cruise ship in mind. Bedrooms that face the pool and an addition shaped like the bow of a ship do bring to mind a cruise liner. The larger than life shadow cast over the property by past owner, Willy Blok Hanson, remains a constant presence for Arthur and Mim who express a genuine desire to honour Willy’s parting request. “Willy wasn’t going to sell her home to just anyone,” says Mim. “She insisted that whomever bought her home had to enjoy it, had to use it. That’s what this house was built for. So we like to invite people in, to host events here, to possibly hold retreats here, to share our home with others.” Once considered a summer getaway, the home had never been insulated, leaving the first order of business to upgrade the heating system. Then, room-by-room, Arthur set about the near Herculean task of taking what previous owners had done with the house and either push their intentions further or recreate it to suit his master vision. “I like planning a project,” Arthur says. “I love the challenge.” In an eerie Hollywood style twist, any doubt the Capons were meant to own this property dissipated when Arthur recognized his own handiwork in the lower level. “Back in the 60s, I worked for a company in Scarborough,” he explains. “This guy used to come in and have things built. I’d go out to the lathe and then glue up these rings of wood, but I never knew what they were for. Then we came to see this house.” Arthur sweeps his hand toward a wrapped column. “And there they were. And these doors. Forty-five years ago, I built these doors.” The labyrinth of rooms – a second kitchen used by caterers who worked the home’s infamous gatherings, the bar, as well as the family, exercise, and laundry rooms – circle the lower level indent created by the main floor pool. Continued on page 18 o u r h o m e s w i n t e r 2 0 1 3 / 2 0 1 4 17 feature “Our home is overwhelming,” Mim admits. “I see Bavarian, Scandinavian and Oriental doors around the pool. The foyer looks like a cruise ship. I had an extremely difficult time purchasing furniture for it. You need very large pieces and they have to make sense. When Tammy came in, she immediately was able to make sense of this eclectic house.” “My intention for this home was to introduce continuity,” Tammy says. Back upstairs and to the right of the foyer, impressive 15 foot ceilings show off the combined great room and the kitchen that was built out by Winvalley Contracting. Magnificent old-world style cabinetry and granite countertops purchased from Habitat for Humanity’s Restore dramatize the space. With the kitchen as her jump-off point, Tammy infused a European flair through the adjoining great room – now Mim’s favourite room – with the installation of a new fireplace, drapes, a wall unit built by Aspen Grove Ltd., and chandeliers from Osso City Lighting Ltd. “I wanted to create seating arrangements that would give them a chance to use more of their home; places to sit and enjoy the pool, or the vestibule and the bedroom deck.” With furniture from Luke’s for Home plus artwork from local artists, Wayne Luke and June Haynes, Tammy has delivered on her promise. Recently included in the 2013 Port Perry Prince Albert House Tour, the family’s hard work and the home’s extraordinary personality fascinated every visitor and created a lasting impression. “If Willy could see it now,” Arthur laughs. OH ABOVE: The tub is set against a magnificent stone backdrop. TOP RIGHT: Clean lines in the sinks, cabinets and lighting create a tranquil space. RIGHT: Like a bed and breakfast, the master bedroom is a cosy retreat. 18 o u r h o m e s w i n t e r 2 0 1 3 / 2 0 1 4 OUR HOMES SPECIAL ADVERTISING FEATURE Tracy Makris President, Bryson & Associates Insurance Brokers Ltd. “Your home is your biggest investment,” says Wendy Henderson, Elite Account Manager at Bryson Insurance Brokers. Wendy Henderson CIP, RIB(Ont) “I love my work,” she says. “I love helping people and developing a valuable rapport with each of my clients.” Across the board, elite or not, your house is your greatest expenditure, a home for your family, a place you go to feel safe, store your valuable belongings…the list goes on. It’s important to ensure that your home insurance covers you, top to bottom. This is especially true of elite clients. Bryson Insurance is staffed with a team of experts when it comes to recommending policies that mitigate exposures and risk for high-value homes. Wendy spends much of her time with elite clients, making sure they have all the information they need to make informed decisions about their home insurance. “It’s one thing to have a high-value home,” explains Wendy. “But, you have to think about what goes inside the home. Many of our elite clients have fine art, wine collections, beautiful jewelry. These are all things to consider when we advise them of their risks and exposures and what it will take to protect them.” High Value Homes and Flood Damage: Protect Yourself In July 2013, Southern Ontario saw a devastating rainstorm. Although it only lasted a day, significant flood damage was done to homes and city infrastructure throughout the Greater Toronto Area and beyond. When situations like these arise, you need to be sure your home and all your valuables are covered. Water damage can destroy expensive artwork and wreak havoc on plumbing. According to Wendy, as an Elite Account Manager, with the help of her team, she takes great care to ensure that all her clients know exactly what their potential exposures are when it comes to water damage and how to mitigate them. “We call on each of our clients when their renewal date rolls around to review their coverages for flooding and sewer backup. We make sure they know what they’re covered for and what they aren’t,” says Wendy. Home insurance is always a good move; it’s important to make sure your biggest investment is protected. Wendy and the team at Bryson can ensure that taking the time to insure your home means money well spent – affording you the most comprehensive coverage options that mitigate the unique exposures that go handin-hand with owning a high-value home. 541 Bayly Street East, Ajax 905.426.8787 | 1.800.661.5196 info@brysoninsurance.ca www.brysoninsurance.ca We work hard to protect the lifestyle you’ve worked so hard to achieve comfort zone FROM COUNTRY TO CHIC B Y S H A R O N O V E R E N D / / P H O T O G R A P H Y B Y T R A C Y S H U M AT E THE PLACE: A fixture on Port Perry’s historic Queen Street since three decades Luke’s has morphed into an exciting home décor 1976, Luke’s For Home offers shoppers a small-town experience destination. CANADIAN B Y YA N I C S I M A R D W PHOTO BY BRANDON BARRE Whether you’re from Canada or not, it’s hard for anyone not to be inspired by the true North and its beautiful elements, which we are lucky enough to find in our own backyard, the great outdoors. Here are my three favourite ways to incorporate our heritage into our homes. 1. THE USE OF FABRIC: Add Canadian character and charm to your home with the simple use of textiles. Glamwood: Nero Tile from Stone Tile Inc. Woodgrain fabric: Cinnabar from Robert Allen If you’re looking for another option next to the real thing, there are many imposter materials that mimic the natural look and feel of wood. Subway Paintable Wallpaper from Graham & Brown Point Blanket by The Hudson’s Bay Company 24 o u r h o m e s w i n t e r 2 0 1 3 / 2 0 1 4 Plaid Upholstery: Whether it be gingham, tartan, or tattersall, this popular pattern consisting of several crossed horizontal and vertical lines (usually in two or more colours) speaks directly to the essence of Canadian settlers. My favourite way to incorporate it in décor is with upholstery. I personally prefer it in smaller doses, such as for sofa pillows or dining room seats, however a club chair completely covered looks amazing as well. Cosy Throws: Curling up on the sofa on a cold winter’s day wouldn’t be the same without one of these. Here are my three favourite classics: UÊ Point Blanket: It wouldn’t be right if I didn’t start with this iconic blanket by The Bay – this wool Point blanket dates back to the 18th century and used to be traded. It continues to be a number one seller and is sold exclusively by The Hudson’s Bay Company. UÊ Faux Fur: Fox, mink or coyote – these Canadian creature-mimicked furs can be the perfect Canuck-inspired addition to your space for added comfort and even luxuriousness. UÊ Matelassé: Meaning quilted, padded or cushioned, and normally referring to hand-quilted textiles. It is meant to mimic the style of hand-stitched Marseilles, a type of quilt made in Provence, France. Incorporating these fabrics into your décor can be the subtle hint of pattern and texture you’re looking for. PHOTO BY BRANDON BARRE Taking inspiration from the great outdoors: acorns, feathers, ornithological prints. Create a rustic vibe with historical wooden items; antique skis, or a weathered sled. 2. THE USE OF WOOD: Nothing warms up a space quite like the use of natural wood. Walls: I particularly like walls sheltered in large, real-wood planks. Douglas fir or cedar – both known for their distinctive grain patterns and tight knots – are each suitable choices when it comes to selecting the type of wood to use. Accessories: Dress up the inside or the surrounding area of your fireplace with logs of wood – even without the use of fire, this actually does create a feeling of warmth too. 3. THE ADDITION OF ANTIQUES: If the northern vibe is the look, an old piece of Canadian history is most definitely calling. Usually an item made of wood, such as an old sled, pair of skis or a rocking chair will feel the most rustic and true to the heritage. Once they laid eyes on a unique bungaloft nestled in a small gated community in Uxbridge, their decision was easy. Uxbridge is indeed a charming picturesque area that attracts young families and retirees alike. It boasts a number of major trail systems, including the Oak Ridges Trail and the Trans Canada Trail. Another neighbourhood gem is the Uxbridge-Scott Museum and Archives that houses a number of artifacts, many related to the township's agricultural heritage and the genealogy of its residents. “We lived in Calgary for 15 years, but you get to a point in your life when you’re ready for retirement,” says Mary Jean. “You want to be close to family, and Calgary wasn’t home. My brother has a farm in the area and my sister is in town and I have a friend in the community that I would come and visit, and I would think ‘what a beautiful spot to live.’” Located on the outskirts of historic Uxbridge, the Alleys’ home is a part of the The Estates of Wyndance master-planned community. The landscaping, interior design and the special accents that make it a home were achieved by the joint efforts of many local design companies, including Lawson Home Improvements Inc. Lawson Home Improvements is more than just a contracting company that renovates bathrooms and kitchens. They have evolved to become a full-service firm that not only renovates, but also provides design services from talented project designers like Marion Chisholm, who was the project lead for the Alley residence design renovation. Owner Kim Lawson worked closely with the homeowners to design a warm multipurpose living area in the previously unfinished basement. Having seen substantial growth the past two decades, Lawson Home Improvements has solidified itself as one of the top renovation firms in Durham Region. “We just keep growing,” says Kim Lawson, owner of Lawson Home Improvements. “This past August we celebrated our 25th anniversary. Living in the beautiful Oak Ridges moraine area of Uxbridge with restricted new construction opportunities, along with the popularity of home improvement shows awakening the creativity of home owners, people are choosing to renovate their homes more and more rather than move. It’s a trend that has benefited our company and we are thankful for the opportunity to grow with it.” A focal point of the home – and a testament to the renovations done by Lawson – is the kitchen. According to Mary Jean, the unique shape and space was a challenge, and the lack of proper garbage space was what started the kitchen renovation. Continued on page 30 o u r h o m e s w i n t e r 2 0 1 3 / 2 0 1 4 29 feature “In Durham region you have to recycle and there simply wasn’t a good space in the kitchen to hold all the containers,” she says. “On top of that, the kitchen was really plain, and I would be sitting at the table thinking ‘what a waste of space this whole wall is.’ I just thought something could be designed that would use the space better.” The result is an extended dining area and a larger island for entertaining and food preparation. Creamy shaker-style cabinetry now runs the length of the kitchen, and the addition of glass doors allows Mary Jean to display some pretty pieces while retaining the kitchen’s function. The Alley home has a beautiful backyard. According to Mary Jean, the backyard was the first large-scale renovation project that they started and completed at the home. Uniquely designed to entertain, the deck area sits just off the kitchen and has a large seating area. An awning was added to provide shade. A kidney-shaped pool sits in the centre of a cascading stone wall that frames the yard. “We did the backyard the first year,” she says. “I would wake up and there would be three or four bulldozers in the backyard. It was a massive job. The rocks are a tonne each and there are over 200 tonnes of stones back there, but our landscaper did a beautiful job matching the stones with our neighbours, and it turned out great.” One of the most striking features in the home is the great room with its vaulted 20-foot ceiling. The loft area looks down from above and houses two elegant guest bedrooms. Drapes run the full length of the floor-toceiling windows, a feat accomplished by drapery designer Barb Stirling at Interiors by Lorelei. The addition of millwork – like the crown moulding on the main floor – completes the dramatic look. Barb Stirling designed and helped select the silk drapes, sunshades and shutters throughout the main floor and basement. Patterson’s Flooring supplied the beautiful basement hardwood installed by Lawson. All local and independent, the Lawson team and Mary Jean credit the great service and variety of choices at these vendors as a part of the process that made the renovation easy and seamless. Marion and Kim also credit Mary Jean’s natural talent for choosing colours and design ideas for the quick turnaround on what could have been a long, arduous renovation project. The entire project was done over two years in stages, and the result is a gorgeous masterpiece that the Alley family is lucky to call home. And one of my favourite holiday traditions is poring over cookbooks looking for inspiration for this year’s homemade gifts from my kitchen. Nothing is sweeter than stirring, swirling and baking up tasty treats to wrap and deliver to friends, family, co-workers, teachers and other special folks in my life. While the cookies, candies and breads I bake may vary from year to year, a staple gift from my kitchen is chocolate bark. It’s appealing because of its simplicity and opportunity for variations. Plus, it’s chocolate – and who doesn’t love the gift of chocolate? There are few ingredients involved, so I like to splurge a little and choose the best chocolate I can find. Dark chocolate is my favourite base for bark – its rich, deep flavour complements the roasted nuts and sweet fruits that dot the surface. But milk chocolate and white chocolate (or perhaps all three!) work wonderfully as well. As for the nuts and fruit, anything goes. Peanuts, cashews, pecans, pistachios, hazelnuts, apricots, cranberries, raisins, cookie bits, candy pieces, pretzels, marshmallows – you get the point! Stick to three toppings at most so that each flavour gets a chance to shine without getting muddled in the mix. For this year’s bark, I’m going with the combination of dark chocolate, almonds and candied ginger – a little bit toasty, a little bit spicy and perfectly decadent. Happy holidays! 38 o u r h o m e s w i n t e r 2 0 1 3 / 2 0 1 4 Melt chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pot of gently simmering water, stirring often until smooth. Stir in about one third of each of the almonds and candied ginger. Pour mixture onto parchment paperlined baking sheet and gently spread with the back of a spoon until about an even scant ½-inch (1 cm) thickness. Sprinkle with remaining almonds and candied ginger. Refrigerate until solid, about 20 minutes. Break or cut into pieces. The bark will keep refrigerated in an airtight container for about 1 week. For gift giving, package as desired. VARIATION: Pistachio Cranberry Apricot Swirl Bark – Melt separately 10 oz. (280 g) dark chocolate and 6 oz. (170 g) white chocolate. Stir one third of each: Ҁ cup roasted shelled pistachios, ѿ cup dried apricots, quartered and ѿ cup dried cranberries into the melted dark chocolate. Spread onto baking sheet. Drizzle with melted white chocolate. Use toothpick, skewer, or back of knife to swirl the chocolates together. Sprinkle with remaining pistachios, apricots and cranberries. Continue as recipe above.
