Cavalier Marching Band Alumni Association
Hello Alums! On behalf of the CMB Alumni Association Board of Directors, we hope you’ve had a great 2014 so far. From a whirlwind in the NCAA Tournament to the near victory in the College World Series, UVa has certainly been keeping busy this year – and so have we! The Cavalier Marching Band Alumni Association has undergone plenty of changes this past year, beginning with the restructuring of the Board after Homecomings 2013. With the new layout, all of the Directors have been hard at work. Read All about It: Woody Wingfield Signs On As CMBAA’s 1st-Ever Givings Chair We are also proud to announce Woody Wingfield (CLAS ’07) has agreed to serve as the CMBAA’s new Givings Chair, where he will be heading up the Association’s involvement in the CMB Capital Campaign. Woody brings to the table a wealth of knowledge of the CMB, serving as the Band’s first drum major since its first performance in 2004, and draws from a wealth of experience in alumni relations and development from his years at Marymount University. We are thrilled to have Woody aboard and know his leadership and commitment to this organization will prove invaluable. If you have any questions about how you can give to the CMB Capital Campaign, or would like to get involved in the Givings effort, email Woody Wingfield (givings@uvacmbaa.org). Marching Into The Future In 2012 the "Marching into the Future" campaign was launched to grow the endowment for the Band while increasing annual support. The campaign seeks to build excellence and heighten the educational and musical experience of all band members. For more information on the campaign, please click here. In order to ensure that future generations of band members are able to enjoy the profound impact that the Band has on its members, your support is needed. Please join us in celebrating the Band's 10th year by making a gift to the campaign today. Off His Rocker To say it’s been an honor and a privilege serving in my role with the CMBAA would be an understatement. I have worked with alumni from so many different classes and regions , and I’m always excited to see how much energy and vision each and every person has to offer this organization. It’s been a hectic year for us on the Board, but it’s truly been a labor of love. So what have we accomplished so far this year? •We were pleased to welcome our newest Director to the Board in 2014, Tiago Bezerra (CLAS ’09) •We’ve taken a hard look at our finances and begun detailing a strategy to keep the Association solvent into the longer-term. •We worked hand-in-hand with Band Staff and Alumni Hall to host our 1st Annual Reunions Reception at the Hunter Smith Band Building in June 2014. •Our Vice Chair and Social Media Guru have worked to provide high quality events for all alumni. •Our Secretary has been toiling away organizing our online document archive and assembling materials for the Association to apply for Alumni Interest Group (AIG) status with Alumni Hall. •Our Webmaster has diligently kept our publicly-available archive up-to-date, and has worked on some special projects (more details to come soon!). •Our very own Abby Heider has been in regular communication with the Band Staff working to create future opportunities for alumni to engage with the CMB beyond traditional givings. •The lovely Christina Mattaliano has helped revamp and revitalize the Association’s online career and professional development tools. All in all, the Board has been taking big strides to keep the Association growing and moving forward in a positive direction. We’ve still got a long way to go, but with your help and input, we’re confident these big changes are only the beginning! To get more involved with the CMBAA or to learn more about the changes we’re making this year, email Josh Richards (chair@uvacmbaa.org). Have a great fall everyone, and see you at Homecomings! Josh Richards CMBAA Chair Clarinet ‘09 Vice Chair’s Corner The CMBAA has been busy with social events this year and looks forward to providing consistent social encounters for all alumni in the future. After Homecomings and a successful 1 stever Alumni Band, the Board of Directors sent out a survey asking for opinions and ideas with an emphasis on social events. With the feedback given and ideas from Directors, a calendar year of social events was put together. We began 2014 with a few UVa Men’s Basketball Watch Parties. Taking place in Northern Virginia and Charlottesville, these events offered some simple ways for alumni to come together, socialize, and watch some great basketball. Our spring season culminated in our annual Spring Happy Hour at the Greene Turtle in Ballston, VA. In future years, the CMBAA looks to use this event to emphasize not only camaraderie, but also opportunities to network and, more importantly, give back to the CMB and the Association. The CMBAA followed up a great regular season for the Cavs by promoting our NCAA Basketball Bracket Challenge, which was a huge success. Thanks to everyone for joining! We helped UVa close out the school year by making a quick stop in C-ville for Foxfield, and hosted our first Foxfield Recovery Brunch – nothing helps you get past the last few hurdles of the races quite like Bodo’s Bagels and coffee. This was a great event and we welcomed both alumni and active undergraduates for a midday social. As the summer began, the CMBAA, in partnership with the CMB office staff and Alumni Hall, kicked off what we hope will be a growing tradition. We hosted a Reunions Weekend Reception event and welcomed back 2004 and 2009 alumni for their Reunions Weekend, as well as alumni from a variety of other years. This fall, the CMBAA once again hosted a tailgate for the first football game of the season against UCLA in Charlottesville on August 30th. Be on the lookout for other events coming your way soon! As always, the Board is looking for ideas and ways to better serve the social interests of the CMBAA, as well as connect CMB Alumni together outside of the traditional Charlottesville and Northern Virginia areas. If you have any thoughts, be sure to share them by emailing vicechair@uvacmbaa.org. We look forward to seeing you all in the coming weeks and months! Rodney Jones CMBAA Vice Chair Alto Saxophone ‘09 The Treasurer’s Trove The Cavalier Marching Band Alumni Association Board of Directors and I have worked to help advance the Association over the last six months, both in policy and in programming. In our current landscape, the Association exists to serve a number of purposes in support of both alumni and current students of the University of Virginia Cavalier Marching Band. One element of our strategy moving forward is to increase communications and transparency across the Association, particularly between the Board of Directors and the General Membership. To these ends, we have made changes in our organizational and operational structures that we believe will help facilitate information sharing throughout the Association and will create opportunities for every member of the CMBAA to become more engaged. As such, the Board feels it is important to communicate not only programmatic information, but financial information as well. Beginning in the fall of 2013, the Association began its transition away from duesbased membership. The Board felt that the extension of membership privileges solely on the basis of dues represented an unsustainable financial model and significantly underserved the Association as a whole. The CMBAA exists to support all alumni and the Board believes this policy shift will help to achieve this mission. Below is the anticipated budget for the remainder of FY2014. Anticipated Budget (Mar. 1-Nov. 1, 2014) Bracket Challenge Gift Cards Foxfield Recovery Brunch Reunions Bar Happy Hours Tailgates Frequency 1 1 1 4 2 Current Balance Anticipated Revenue Total Event Expense $ $ $ $ $ 50.00 200.00 250.00 60.00 200.00 Total Total $ $ $ $ $ $ 50.00 200.00 250.00 240.00 400.00 1,140.00 $ $ $ 3,893.81 2,753.81 As our finances change over the coming years, our financial reporting will also evolve. In the future, the Association will rely primarily on voluntary donations from alumni and supporters of the CMBAA. For FY2014, the Board has decided to focus efforts on increasing participation in the CMB Capital Campaign and has actively encouraged alumni to direct giving toward this important effort. The Board is currently exploring additional options to increase revenue and provide for annual operating expenses that will not directly conflict or take away from giving opportunities that will support the CMB over the next ten years. Furthermore, our current focus is on building a strong, involved community and increasing attendance at Association events, which is the foundation for long-term vitality for the CMBAA, both organizationally and financially. Short-term Goals The Association strives to achieve these outcomes to better position the CMBAA longer-term: •Capturing all CMB alumni in listserv and social media outlets, •Increasing participation in live and virtual CMBAA events, •Honing programming to better support alumni and Association missions, •Enhancing engagement with active CMB members, and •Providing consistent contact between alumni and the Board. Long-term Goals In the longer term, the Association strives to increase giving to the CMB and the Capital Campaign, including: •Supporting fundraising efforts operated by the CMB and the University of Virginia, and •Promoting the Capital Campaign by working to endow a spot on behalf of the entire CMBAA. Looking Ahead In the coming months, the Board will work alongside any and all interested alumni to craft a suitable financial strategy that sustains the programming and operations of the Association while placing a larger focus on giving to the CMB than in previous years. We have a lot of work ahead of us as we continue to develop this young, yet rapidly growing Association, but with your support and engagement there is little doubt we can achieve our short- and long-term goals. Thank you to each and every one of you for your continued support of the Cavalier Marching Band and this Association. If you have any questions about the CMBAA budget, or want to get more involved, please feel free to contact Leah Garofalo (treasurer@uvacmbaa.org) or Josh Richards (chair@uvacmbaa.org). Leah Garofalo CMBAA Treasurer Trumpet ‘12 Madame Secretary’s Missive It has been a successful year for the organizational growth and development of the CMBAA and it is my pleasure to share a highlight with you from my work as Secretary. We are in the process of strengthening and formalizing our relationship with UVA’s Alumni Association by pursuing Alumni Interest Group (AIG) status for the CMBAA. As per Alumni Hall, AIGs are “micro-communities of alumni that share a commonality and have built a tie or bond to each other as part of the University experience.” Benefits of AIG status include access to the central alumni contact information database, increased outreach opportunities, support from dedicated alumni development professionals, and more robust financial planning through the University’s managed portfolio. Current AIGs include The Cavalier Daily, The University Guides, and The Virginia Glee Club. Our revised AIG application package will be submitted in September and the Board is looking forward to advancing to the next stage of the AIG approval process. We are grateful for the ongoing support of Erin Hall, Senior Director of Development at Alumni Hall as we navigate the AIG process. Her assistance, advice, and encouragement have been vital to the continued progress of our AIG application. As always, please feel free to reach out to me with your ideas, questions, or concerns at secretary@uvacmbaa.org. Cheers and Go Hoos! Maria McCall Dorsey CMBAA Secretary Trumpet ‘09 On The Scene Since the fall of 2013, the CMBAA has made efforts to increase its social media presence. In that time, you may have noticed that we have revived our Twitter and Facebook usage - both of which were fairly scarce over the past year or so. We have also created both Instagram and Pinterest accounts, and plan to create a Tumblr account soon. The focus over the next few months will be on populating all of those accounts with vital information regarding the CMBAA and its actions. That includes board meetings, happy hours, alumni events, etc. We also hope to keep things light by posting fun and interesting things not only related to the CMB/CMBAA, but to any and all hilarious happenings that we think would be cool to share. In order for us to keep these social networks alive, we'll need a bunch of help from you all! Anything from a like on Facebook to a follow on Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, & Tumblr would be super helpful in terms of sharing information and getting the word out that we exist in these mediums. If you find yourself amongst a group of CMB alums, then please don't hesitate to send us a picture so that we can post to Instagram and let people know what everyone is up to these days! It's so great that so many alums are still the best of friends, and we'd love to showcase that camaraderie on our social sites. With the football season coming up, we know that there will be a lot of opportunities for photos, so we look forward to your submissions! You can send them over to social@cmbaa.org, and we'll be sure to get it posted. Thanks for all of your support! See you in the libra- oh wait, just kidding. SEE YOU AT THE BAR! Shantira Higgins CMBAA Social Media Guru Drum Major ‘11 Technology Time As an active board member for the past few years, I have supported online activities for the Association through coordinating the editing and distribution of the newsletter, as well as maintaining the website along with related posts and various content updates. While it may not seem like the most glamorous of jobs, maintaining the Association’s online presence through archives of meeting minutes, operational documents, and contact information for the Board has been critical for the CMBAA in developing its history and working toward Alumni Interest Group (AIG) status. We have a long way to go, but we’re off to a good start! Also, be on the lookout for an upcoming web surprise that we hope will help everyone keep in touch better! And be sure to check out our Association website, updated monthly, for news on the CMB, a full calendar of events so you can plan ahead, and detailed records of the Association’s planning and work over the last few years. It’s been a wonderful year for the CMBAA, as we have worked towards being a better-connected alumni organization. With another season of the CMB underway, it’s amazing to see the growth of organization since its first performance in 2004 and its continued excellence on and off the field. Being able to perform in the first CMB Alumni Band was an amazing experience; seeing old friends and performing in Scott Stadium, there is nothing like it. As I stated previously, the CMBAA has been working toward improving communication among alumni members. It is safe to say we are all great resources for each other once we have graduated from the University, with alumni across the United States (even across the pond!), pursuing various career fields, academic endeavors, and engaging in various life stages. While the CMBAA has great avenues to keep alumni in the loop of social events, we also have a way to keep up with each other professionally! Keep in touch with your fellow CMB alumni in a professional manner by joining our group on LinkedIn. This is the perfect place to: •Build your network •Post job opportunities •Offer professional advice •Share real-world insight into life post-UVa.
