Juniata River Valley Visitors Guide!
The brand new Juniata River Valley Visitors Guides will be delivered to our Historic
Courthouse location the week of August 15th. We shall be hustling about the two county region
for days thereafter delivering them to you for display to visitors and locals alike.
Centre Publications of Centre Hall handled the marketing and the design of this year’s
edition. I strongly urge you to take some time to review it; the photography, design and ad content is all well done. The guide will be posted on the internet and will be interactive; clicking on
an ad will take the viewer to the advertiser’s web-site.
Centre Publications will be working on the Chamber Membership Directory in the fall.
This will be a brand new product for us, one that will serve as an extensive reference guide to the
business community of Mifflin and Juniata Counties.
In the winter Centre Publications will be producing a full color, highly detailed, two
county map, another product that we have not had available to us in the past. We have requests
daily for this product, both from visitors to our area and from businesses needing the recourse.
… If you are ready to party yourself into shape, then the
Zumba® program is for you. We are fortunate enough to have two licensed Zumba® instructors;
Terri Whitsel and Angie Fetters, both of Mifflin County who have combined forces to create TAZ Fitness. Both were holding classes at various locations throughout the area and decided that it made
sense to combine their efforts and open a centrally located fitness facility with a set schedule.
The facility is currently focused on the many aspects of Zumba® fitness, including ZumbAtomic® (for the 4 – 12 year age group), Zumba Toning®, and with future plans to add Zumba Gold®.
Zumba Fitness® was created by Beto Perez in 2001 and is the only Latin-inspired dance-fitness program that
blends red-hot international music, created by Grammy Award-winning producers, and contagious steps to

Terri & Angie have seen their numbers grow since their opening on April 18th, 2011 and have also witnessed many of their members

On Saturday, July 2 , the 6 Annual Juniata RiverFEST was alive and
rocking on the banks (and waters) of the Juniata River. The RiverFEST Rampage 5K, had 94 runners this year.
Big thanks to John Walters for organizing the race. The Rampage 5k is
one of the area’s biggest races.
By 10am the Juniata River was full of canoes, kayaks, tubers, and rafters
participating in the Raft Regatta and Community Float. Making their trek from
the Waterside Campground to Victory Park was as always a great time. Thank
you to Waterside for allowing us to invade the campground once again.
Victory Park was buzzing with the 30 plus vendors already setup and people were starting to filter
through. The crowds came at noon and did not leave
until after the fireworks. Victory Park was “Rockin’ by
the River” around noon. Ryan Russler lined up the day
into night live entertainment including; Steve Snook,
Nathanial Mowery, Chris Ruble & Band, Friction, The
Crazy Monkey, Fifth Shot, and Johnny Unit. THANK
You to Ryan and all of the amazing talent that we had
this year. You guys put the Rockin’ in to the RiverFEST!
RiverFEST Idol was at 3pm, with Jeff Stevens of MERF
Radio, hosting the event which was also aired live on
MERF. RiverFEST Idol winner was Jeff Boob, 2nd place
went to Heather Giardino, and 3rd place was Kasi
Damiano. Congratulations to all ten finalists – the competition was great this year! Join us next year on June
30th for the 7th annual Juniata RiverFEST!

run for the seat on Borough Council.
In the Borough of Lewistown the mayor attends council meetings and votes only in the
event of a tie. The mayor is officially in charge of emergency services and the police department.
He or she also has the legal power to perform marriages. On the ceremonial side of the position,
a lot of personal discretion applies. Over the years Lewistown has had many mayors, some taking the job more seriously than others. Mayor Bargo’s predecessor bumped the visibility up a notch before resigning to relocate in 2007.
Mayor Bargo, the first female in Lewistown’s history, hit the ground running and hasn’t slowed down yet.
She rarely misses events, ceremonies or celebrations that take place in the borough, always representing borough government.
During the past two years, she has assisted Chief Herkert with the organizing a Lewistown Police Department. She has worked tirelessly to
bring the project to fruition; both on time and under budget. She continues to work with the new force daily.
The interesting side of her position has been the quantity of marriages she has been asked to perform. On July 22 nd, 2011, she
reached her 200th career marriage. Her average stands at one wedding per week for four years. Mayor Deborah A. Bargo is truly the Marrying Mayor. Couples seeking a civil ceremony are drawn to her charm, her words of wisdom and her professionalism. She makes civil ceremonials special and memorable. She keeps a detailed log of every wedding she has performed. Over half take place in her office on the
first floor of the Borough headquarters in the Municipal Building on Third Street. Other sites include the Stone Arch Bridge, Brookmere Winery, Victory Park, Malta Park, Derry Township Community Park, the front steps of the Historic Courthouse, top of Belleville Mountain, Laurel
Rock Farm, the Reynolds Mansion in Bellefonte and even at the Reedsville Fishing Derby where the couple wore fishing boots and fishing
gear.
Mayor Deborah A. Bargo’s mission as mayor is simply to make a positive impact on the community and all the residents she
serves. The Chamber recognized her success in standing true to her mission by awarding her the ―Community Service Award‖ at the annual
membership meeting this past April.

Junior Achievement of Central PA Hires Pete
Davey (Lancaster, PA) – Junior Achieve-
ment of Central PA hired Pete Davey as Business Development Manager. Following a 17year career with whales and dolphins in
the education and conservation field of
oceanariums in Mystic, CT, Chicago, Denver and Florida, Pete
moved his family to central Pennsylvania and began a second career working with non profits. Along with consulting with zoos, and
therapeutic riding programs, Pete served as executive director for a
historical society and a riverboat before joining JA.
Junior Achievement of Central Pennsylvania, located in
Lancaster, PA, is a community based, non-profit 501(c)3 organization, providing in-school and after-school programs for students in
grades K-12 across a nine county area (Lancaster, Lebanon, Dauphin, Schuylkill, Union, Northumberland, Juniata, Mifflin, and Snyder
counties). JACP makes it real by bringing business people from the
―real world‖ into area classrooms. All programs are funded by individuals, foundations, and the business community.

7 Steps to Starting a

minimal cost.

The 100 feet by 34 feet space will house 24 tracks,
chain link fence secured, ten feet wide gates at both ends
for truck passage and wide paths between beds for easy
use. The site under consideration will be centrally located,
well lighted, easily protected by Lewistown Borough Police,
plenty of free parking and close to public rest rooms.

1. Create a great site: This is No.
1 for a reason. You have to have a
great-looking, intuitive, easy-to-navigate site if you are going to
be taken seriously by potential e-customers. Your site must look
professional. Pictures and content must load quickly. There can
be no dead links. Have a robust "About" page. The good news
is that it is easy and affordable to create a great site - look for
online hosts that have pre-made templates you can customize.
Web surfers who come to your site will judge it in about three
seconds. That's all you've got. You better impress them the moment they hit it.
Pick your products: I have a buddy who owns an antiques store.
His business success motto is: "It's all in the buying." He knows
if he can find the right product at the right price, he will make a
profit. The same is true for you. Where do you find great, inexpensive products? It depends on what you plan to sell. It may be
a matter of spending weekends at yard sales and on Craigslist
picking up some good, cheap stuff. If you want a more formal
arrangement, there are wholesalers and distributors for almost
any product you need.
Have the ability to process payments: This issue is two-fold: The
financial ability to process credit card payments comes when
you have a merchant account. Search for that term online. The
physical ability to process such payments is, again, something
your host will offer. Search for "online merchant services" or "Ecommerce hosting."
Have an online catalog or store: When you shop online, there is
usually a catalog of products to choose from: Tiny pictures with
product descriptions. That is what you have to do. Happily, you
do not have to create this from scratch. Your e-commerce site
host (see below) will offer a store creation tool, with point-andclick ways to add products, pictures, and descriptions.
Market and promote your site: All these steps are important, but
this one may be a little more important. People have to find your
site. No matter how nice it looks or how cool your products, if no
one knows about the site, it is a waste of time, money, and effort.
Fulfillment: You have to deliver what you sell, on budget and on
time. Don't forget to add the cost of shipping to your prices.
Master search engine optimization (SEO) techniques. Engage in
viral marketing. Tweet. Have a Facebook fan page. Try pay-perclick. Advertise. After-sales support: How will you handle returns? What should you upsell? Support is the difference between a one-time sale and creating a customer for life.

attendees to check out

team was available to answer any questions and to help interested

A month rarely goes by that I am not invited to speak somewhere, be it a service club, a retiree group, a church organization or a civic event. Over six years ago I
struggled to find appropriate topics to fit the occasion. I often cranked out a
talk I had prepared several years ago about what I remembered about downtown
Lewistown on the day I arrived many years ago. I used that speech dozens of times and
since it was a dated piece, I always learned additional information from the audience,
names of businesses I wasn’t familiar with and faces I couldn’t attach a name to.
In more recent years I have had absolutely no problem at all delivering an up to the
moment talk about what is happening in the Juniata River Valley. The reason is simple. There
is an incredible amount of good things happening everywhere I turn, and this didn’t happen
overnight.
Many of the happenings are now pleasant additions to local history. The Lewistown Narrows conversion to a state of the art four lane highway, the North Lewistown Bypass, the restoration of the Stone Arch Bridge, the Corvette America relocation, the conversion of the Mann Edge Tool warehouse into the COMPASS Center,
the restoration of the Pomeroy-Academia wooden bridge, the restoration of the
historic Juniata County courthouse, the construction of the First Quality baby
diaper factory, the Kardex sale & rejuvenation, the streetscape enhancement of
Monument Square, the Water Street train track/street rebuild, the Veterans Memorial Mural at Victory Park, the Lewistown Hospital Cancer Treatment Center
and the construction of the new Mifflin County High School. All of these amazing projects have given me “good news” opportunities to share wherever I could
reach an audience during the past several years.
If this was the conclusion to the story it would be a happy ending, but it
isn’t. There is much more good news on the horizon. Let’s begin with the Derry
Heights project. Today three commercial buildings are under construction: a 120
room Hampton Inn, a Quaker Steak & Lube restaurant & sports bar with banquet
facilities and a 12 theatre Cineplex. Simultaneously, the owners of the Best Western in Milroy are constructing a sports bar/restaurant and a Subway next door to
the inn in the building that houses the Dollar General Store.
In Juniata County the ground breaking ceremony took place for the multimillion dollar replacement bridge connecting Mifflin to Mifflintown, a project that
took many years and much public input to design and locate.
Funding was recently secured for a 31 townhouse project on the site of the old
Mann Edge Tool factory on the corner of South Dorcas and Water Streets in Lewistown. An application has been submitted for financing for the conversion of the Lewistown Hotel into 22 apartments to be operated by the Mifflin County Housing Authority.
A PennDOT grant was awarded to Mifflin County for three blocks of continued streetscape improvements adjacent to Monument Square, plus financing is in place to improve South Main Street from the square to Water Street and North Main from the

major multi-million dollar expansion project and rumors are starting surface that the First
Quality Baby Diaper Factory is considering doubling it’s presence in the Mifflin County
location, a pad for that expansion is already in place.
The bottom line to this story is that our area has been blessed with amazing amounts of great news during a period when most communities are hanging on
by the skin of their teeth. We are slowly crawling out of a recession nationally, but you would
