From the Director, Kenny Sturm
As I open my latest stack
of email I see an updated member list from
Sandy Rosenthal, our
membership officer. Six
new members added in
as many days since her
previous update, bringing our membership total
to 389. Welcome to all
of you who are reading
your first Erie HOG
newsletter. It’s nice to
see our membership
grow and always a
pleasure to meet new
members at the meetings or on group rides.
We are blessed with one
of the more active chapters in this part of the
country and, considering
the short riding season
that we endure, we always seem to have
something going on. We
have monthly rides, dinner rides, & overnight
rides, as well as our
MDA poker run to name
a few. Our members
also support benefits
and charitities by participating in other poker
runs and memorial
rides. Some of our retired riders or ROMEO’s (Retired Old
Men Eating Out) will
get together for impromptu rides just because we can. And
during the non-riding
season our chapter
continues with dinner
rides even if we have to
take the cages. We
also have movie nights
in our H.O.G. room during the cold winter
weather to keep the
camaraderie going.
As I talked with directors and other officers
at the Harley Officers
Training this spring, it
was clear to me that we
are very fortunate to
have the support of our
sponsoring dealership
that many other chapters could only wish for.
Kelly & Susan Lapping
have always been generous with contributions

for our chapter and we
have one of the nicest
H.O.G. meeting rooms in
the country. Not many
dealers give their H.O.G.
members a 10% discount. And I’m pretty
sure I can speak for
them when I say that
they are very appreciative of the help that our
chapter provides
throughout the year with
events such as Bikefest
and gift wrapping at
Christmas.
I too want to thank
everyone who contributes their time and effort
to make this chapter so
successful. It’s never
difficult to fill a volunteer
list when needed with
this group. And our officers do a lot behind the
scenes to make our

meetings fun and more interesting and our rides
memorable.
From your Head
We now have 389 members and on the average
about 55-70 attend our monthly meetings, and
20 or so attend dinner rides or monthly rides.
We know that many of you join Erie H.O.G.
solely for the discount on purchases at the dealership but I would encourage those of you who
have never attended a meeting or group ride to
give it a try. Check out what you’ve been missing. We have a very diverse group of motorcycle enthusiasts and you will surely meet some
great people. We look forward to seeing more
of you at our last Saturday meeting of 2014 on
September 6th as we return to Tuesday night
meetings in October.

Greetings to the HOG Riders,
Well we are halfway through the riding season
and this summer has been a challenge to get
out and put miles on our bikes. We have had
more than our share of wet days and weekends
to try and ride. Since this is my first article in the
newsletter this year I apologize for that. Marilyn
and I purchased a house this spring and we
have been busy cleaning and painting. We
moved in mid-June and still are adjusting to unpacking and trying to find things. This has limited our riding time to just a few, like the MDA
(monsoon) and lunch rides. I cancelled the July
overnight ride because of low attendance and
the wet weekend forecast. Hopefully next year
we can try again and go to Corning Glass Works
Museum.
The weather has turned for the better in the last
few weeks and I hope that more of you are putting miles on your bikes. This year we started a
new program of giving away gift cards to both
Men and Women for the most miles ridden in a
month starting in May and going thru October. If
you e-mail me your starting mileage at the
beginning of the month and at the end of the
month you will be able to compete for the
award. Thanks to all of you who have come up
with ride ideas for this year. It makes it a lot
easier to plan and do rides when we have more
destinations to choose from. So I hope that we
have more sunny days to ride and we can enjoy
the rest of our summer. Ride safe and have fun.

Happy August! I hope everybody
had a great July! I know I did!!
Starting with a nice 4 day weekend to celebrate our nation’s Independence, It just got
better from there. And, yes, I’m referring to
Bikefest and Roar on the Shore. What a great
couple of events. Starting with Bikefest, I had
the opportunity to help out with the demo
rides on Sunday. I’m not sure I was much help,
but I had a blast riding the latest offerings from
the Motor Company, including the over-the-top
CVO Ultra. Wow, that was a treat. But I have
to say, I had the most fun on the new Low
Rider. I liked the old-school feel and rumble of
that bad boy. Brings back great memories
from my riding days in college, many more
years ago than I care to remember.
And just to clear the air, contrary to what one
news broadcast stated without actually asking
me, this is my 7th real motorcycle, not my
first! Anyway, it’s fun and exciting to win, until
you talk to your accountant and he tells you
you’re on the hook for 35% of the retail value
in taxes! Gotta love the IRS!
The best part is, 3 HOG members won motorcycles, and now we have a new HOG member
winning the Sportster, so overall, Chapter
2239 is 4 for 4. That’s awesome!
I finished up July by taking a family trip to the
Florida Keys to truly experience warm
weather, since we are a little light on heat
around here this year.
That was my July, and I hope you enjoyed
your July as much as I enjoyed mine!
Tim
Later in the week, my brother flew in from
Phoenix and rented a Switchback for the
weekend. Thursday started with the Parade
from the Casino into downtown Hub. It’ It’s so
much fun to see the people line the streets
waving our Flag!
On Friday we did the Covered Bridges tour of
Ashtabula County. I’ve lived here most of my
life and I’ve never seen any of these
bridges. Very cool. I need to get out of my
cave more…
Of course, the best part of the week
was Thursday. I was on North Park Row and
State Street, hanging out with the family trying
to decide what delectable dish in which we
were going to partake. About then I received
a “colorful” text message from Dan Iavarone
indicating I was the winner of the Kawasaki
Ninja, shortly followed by a few other texts
from a few other HOG members congratulating me. I certainly didn’t believe it immediately,
but sure enough, it was true.

From Past Erie
HOG Director,
We were welcomed with open arms and I felt
right at home. Dave and Scott got the tire
repaired and we were back on the road in no
time.
Mike Schleicher
It seems as though I am
having a string of bad
luck. I have had 3 flat
rear tires on my 2012 Ultra Classic in the last
month! The first two happened locally, and I
was not surprised that dealership owners, Kelly
& Susan Lapping, and Service Manager, Mark
Kinstler, at Harley-Davidson of Erie really
stepped up to the plate to help me out and get
me back in the saddle.
Unfortunately the third flat occurred on Sunday,
July 27, while I was traveling home to Erie, PA
with 7 other friends after a four day bike trip to
Kentucky. We had taken in the sights and visited Mammoth Caves as well as the Corvette
Museum. As my tire went flat, I was able to pull
in to an Exxon gas station on Rt. 7 in Gallipolis,
OH. I immediately looked for a local H-D shop
on my Garmin GPS. I found the listing for Baxter’s Harley-Davidson in Bidwell, OH and gave
them a call. As luck would have it, they are
closed on Sundays and Mondays.
The station clerk heard of my situation and said
she knew Ben and Kathy Baxter and would give
them a call. A short time later I was talking to
Kathy and she said she would attempt to get a
mechanic in to help me out. She called me back
and said the mechanic would be at the dealership in 45 minutes. I told her I had tried 5 tow
companies to get me to the shop without luck. I
must have been a little flustered because I did
not think to look at my HOG card for the roadside assistance phone number. She agreed to
send the mechanic, Dave Stickler, to pick me
up. The shop truck was in for repairs so Dave
came and got me with his personal vehicle and
trailer. We got the bike loaded and headed to
the shop where I got a chance to meet Ben and
Kathy as well as a second mechanic, Scott
Machi.
I would like to thank Ben, Kathy, Dave and
Scott for the FANTASTIC service. They gave up
part of their Sunday to help a traveler in need.
Some say when you ride a Harley you are part
of a family and the treatment I received certainly
shows that. So I guess my string of bad luck
was not so bad after all. This experience
served to remind me that I have a great local
Harley shop and gave me the opportunity to
meet the wonderful people at Baxter’s. If you
get a chance, please stop into H-D Erie and
Baxter's and let them know Mike sent you!!

The White Turkey
386 East Main Road
(Route 20), Conneaut Ohio
In 1981, Peggy and Gary Tuttle, son of Eddie
and Marge, decided to continue the tradition
and now the tradition will soon be continuing on
into the 3rd and soon into the 4 th generation.
Kelly and Bradd joined the family owned business in 2001 and on some occasions you might
find their children 4 year old Beckham and 8
month old Emmy hanging out in the kitchen.
From the Editor,
You often hear pundits saying things like, “it’s
not the destination, it is the journey” or “the
ends justify the means”. While that is often
the case, a trip to the White Turkey Drive-In,
in Conneaut Ohio is to be savored for both
the journey and the destination.
It seems that one of the most popular rides
from the Erie Harley Dealership is a short half
hour ride to Conneaut Ohio along Routes PA
5 or 20. The rides are scenic and other than
the need for some road repair on Rt. 5, the
trip is very enjoyable. This is especially true
later in the summer, and early fall when you
can smell the ripening grapes in the many
vineyards along the route.
The real joy of this 23 mile ride is the destination, a landmark since 1952 when Eddie and
Marge Tuttle decided to open a restaurant
that would highlight the products of their local
turkey farm where they raised White Holland
Turkeys. (Thus the name of the Drive-In.)
Over the years, that product evolved into a
delicious Turkey Sandwich. I know this because I had one for lunch during the recent
Bike Fest! The Turkey Sandwich is only one
of many delicious offerings on the menu.
(More about that later.)
As you can see from the above picture, the
White Turkey Drive-In also maintains a famous
and delicious Richardson’s Root Beer franchise .
The Drive-In menu offers the usuals: burgers,
hot dogs, cheese burgers, fish sandwiches and
fries in many variations, such as: chili dogs, chili
cheese dogs, chili cheese fries, Smith’s sizzle
dogs…… you get the picture. Feature items include: the famous Turkey Sandwich based on
the original family recipe, a Large Marge which
is the Turkey Sandwich with cheese and bacon,
a Big Ed that is a double cheese burger and a
Super Ed which includes bacon and an onion
ring. I could go on, but simply let me say that
the real pleaser is the Chubby Chucker….. a triple cheese burger topped with bacon and fries!
Page 6
You will simply have to check out the rest of the
menu for yourself and I am sorry for drooling on
the keyboard.
One of Eddie Tuttle’s favorite expressions was:
“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” It seems that the
3rd and soon 4th generations of owners have
lived by that motto. After these 62 years the
quality food and service continues and it doesn’t
need to be fixed!
The White Turkey is open from 11 a.m. until 10
p.m., 7 days a week from Mother’s Day until Labor Day. So now before the summer has
passed, make that journey to a HOG favorite
destination. I think you will enjoy both.
Your can find the White Turkey at
www.whiteturkey.com and like them on Facebook
The Editor, Jerry
Ice cream cones, sundaes, milkshakes, malts
and floats made with Richardson’s Root Beer
and the major attraction if you are not interested
in a meal.
It seems that nearly every week, there is an entourage of Erie HOG members making the trip
to the White Turkey for a snack. One of our
own HOG group members, Bruce Rosenthal
has been making this trip since he was a child
when he went with his dad….mostly for an ice
cream cone. Bruce says “the food is excellent
and the trip is very enjoyable”.
After 33 years,
Peggy is still
very happy with
the success of
the White Turkey
and is assuming
that the tradition
will carry on into
the next generation. The White
Turkey currently
employs 26
young people
from ages 14 to
23.

A safety message from Carla Georgal
and the LOH
MOTORCYCLE SAFETY IS EVERYWHERE
Motorcycle safety is everywhere, even at places
you would least expect. Like a Health & Safety
Fair for a social service agency. We have offered this opportunity to the employees for the
past six years, and I was given the challenge
and responsibility from the beginning to make it
happen. Previously the event had been held at
our corporate office that could only manage a
maximum of fifteen vendors. Last year was the
first year it was held in the Zem Zem Shine Club
ballroom. We had over thirty-three vendors,
demonstrations, games, prizes with a variety of
health and safety information provided by the
vendors plus we held a blood drive to help out
the Erie Community Blood Bank. We also offered the employees a free lunch with beverage.
Not bad huh?
Fast forward to this year and again it was time
for the event. It was held again at Zem Zem
Shrine Club (they do a great job) with over
thirty-six vendors sharing information and freebies to the employees. We again offered the
free lunch and beverage to our employees, had
games, prizes, and held the blood drive.
What does all this have to do with motorcycle
safety? Well, last year Ginny Caldwell and Tracy
Gates from Motorcycle Safety Program of PA
(MSP) had a table with everything a person
would want to know about how to get their permit, the safety course itself and how to sign up
for the course. My husband, Skip, also brought
his motorcycle to the event and displayed it by
the MSP table (yep, the General Manager, Laurie Space, allowed us to bring the bike into the
ballroom for the event). So this year I went a
step further. I again invited Ginny and Tracy
from MSP, my husband Skip to bring his bike,
and then asked our own Safety Officer, Dan
Iavarone, if he would be willing to attend the
event as a representative of Chapter 2293
Safety Officer. Dan said yes and I was glad he
was willing to help out. On July 30 th after a
morning of thunder, lightning and a downpour
the sky cleared up and as I was putting the final
touches on the event I heard the wonderful
sound of those loud pipes by the overhead door
at the Shrine Club. I hit the door opener and
there sat my husband and Dan on their bikes. I
was thrilled.
Dan represented
the chapter and
motorcycle safety
in an informative
and professional
way. The display
for the table included a lot of
good information, a laptop with safety CDs running, and did a great job meeting the employees
and explaining how important safety is when riding, and sharing information about our chapter.
After the event was over I received positive
feedback about the event in general, but also
how impressed the employees were with the
information Dan shared with them and how
much they appreciated it.
Of course I thank my husband Skip for helping
out again this year with the event, but a special
thanks to Dan who stepped up to the plate with
great and interesting information, a nice looking
table display, bringing his bike for the event, and
most all for helping me out. Grazie Dan!

Where is the summer going? Can’t believe a
couple of months ago we were anticipating the
MDA event in June and it is now August.
Whew… With that being said, though the
weather did not cooperate with us for the MDA
event the people at the Edinboro/McKean VFW
Post 740 were great! They went out of their way
to accommodate us. The food was very good.
They kept the coffee flowing and had a few extra rolls of paper towels to help the riders dry off
a little. It was while standing in the pavilion we
came up with the idea of a LOH-HOG picnic to
be held at the VFW. There is plenty of parking
on a paved parking lot, a wonderful area to play
horseshoes and a corn-hole game, and a pavilion equipped everything we need to have a
great picnic. Now if the weather cooperates we
will be golden!
If you haven’t heard the LOH-HOG picnic will be
Sunday, September 14th from 12 Noon until 5:00
p.m. at the Edinboro/McKean VFW Post 740 on
Route 98, Edinboro, PA. LOH and HOG members may bring a guest, and we have invited
Kelly and Susan Lapping and the staff of Harley
Davidson of Erie and their guests to join us.
Cost is $15.00 per person or $25.00 a couple,
Adults Only. There will be food, cash bar, music
by DJ Bill Mason, games including motorcycle
games, and prizes. Ladies of Harley will be providing the desserts!
Tickets may be purchased at the Welcome
Desk at the Harley Davidson of Erie dealership
and at the HOG meeting on Saturday, September 6th.
Hope to see you all there! Who knows this
might even become an annual event!
Ladies of Harley, please note there will be a
“special” meeting to be held at the Crossroads
Dinor in Edinboro, PA on Thursday, August 21st
at 6:30 p.m. We will be meeting in the Trolley
Car and the guys will be in the dining room/bar
area. The meeting is to discuss the details of
the LOH-HOG picnic. Please RSVP so I can
have an accurate count for the restaurant.
As always we welcome new members to join us
for dinner and the meeting.
Look forward to seeing everyone then!
Until later,

Did you ever………………………………?
By Vroom
Did you ever dream of having an Electric
Harley?
What? Are you kidding?
Now that it is possible to do so, why would you
ever want to? The really unique features of a
Harley-Davidson Motorcycle are: Sound,
Weight, Sound, Vibration, Sound, Chrome and
Sound.
It’s the roar, the beautiful noise that a Harley
makes that sets it apart and makes it special.
Last week I was riding north on Rt. 99 just south
of McKean on one of those relatively straight
stretches when I looked ahead about 400 yards
and saw a doe and two fawn standing in the
middle of the road…. Just standing in their own
little worlds of whatever deer think about. Even
though I was still relatively far away (I was not in
the usual panic that you get when you are startled by a deer in the road.) I watched them as
they obviously heard my pipes looked up at me
as I rapidly approached and gracefully ambled
off to the side of the road, up a bank and into
the woods.
As I approached where they had been standing,
I was struck with the thought that I was glad that
my ride carried a lot of noise as a special add
on. As I am apt to do in situations like this, I
honked my horn loudly in hopes of scaring them
into remembering what a threat a motorcycle
can be hoping they continued on into the woods
with those noises in their ears.
Now, just pause a second or two and think
about how that scenario would have proceeded
if I had been riding an electric Harley. The doe
and her offspring would have simply stood in the
middle of the road, gawking around as I approached at a rapid rate of speed not having
heard an alarm.
At some point they might have caught a glimpse
of movement as I approached, probably just as I
was about to smash into them with my nice new
silent electric motorcycle.
I am not sure I ever quite appreciated the meaning of that slogan that says “Loud Pipes Save
Lives”, but now I know I do believe.
If the option is noisy pipes vs. the silence of
electricity give me life! As Nathan Hale said,
“Give me life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” on my noisy Harley-Davidson!
Be careful out there.
