Wesleyan Senior Living
I would like to take this opportunity to
introduce myself. 2015 has brought many
changes to Wesleyan Senior Living. We
have had several retirements, including
our President/CEO Mike Rogan. Mike’s
retirement offered me an opportunity to
continue to serve the community in a
different role, and at the request of the
Board, I agreed to serve as Interim CEO.
I will continue to serve as Chief Human
Resources Officer during this transition
period.
During my 25 years at Wesleyan Senior
Living my area of expertise has been
supporting Associates and Management
as they provide our Residents a culture in
which to age successfully. In addition, I
have served as a member of the Executive
Team which addresses the day to day
management of the community. I want
to thank all of you that have offered your
support and encouragement in my new
role.
Looking back at 2014, we spent time
working on our strategic plan and the
action steps that were developed. This
included continuing to work on census
goals, controlling expenses and being good
financial stewards. We addressed physical
improvements with new signage, building
a physical therapy room on the fourth
floor to serve our skilled unit, remodeling
the third floor shower room and replacing
flooring on the second floor.
In December, Wesleyan Senior
Living was recognized as a certified
Center for Successful Aging through
Masterpiece Living. This is a significant
accomplishment as we are one of 10 in
the United States and the only one in
Ohio. Being a Center for Successful
Aging is about developing a culture where
programming is Resident-driven. We are
ever mindful of providing opportunities
for Residents to participate in the four
components of successful aging, those
being Spiritual, Physical, Intellectual and
Social.

As we move forward we will continue to
keep our focus on the strategic plan that
has been developed by the community. It
is our guide as we develop new initiatives
and address areas of concern. The four
strategies we have identified are (1)
Drive our Core Business: Achieve a
level of financial performance that will
allow us to maximize and perpetuate
our mission by offering services that are
not constrained by capital. (2) Physical
Environment: Enhance curb appeal and
interior appearance for new prospects,
residents and visitors to increase census.
(3) Organizational Excellence: Create
an organizational culture that is flexible,
committed, and focused on our mission
and key objectives. (4) Research and
Business Development: Expand
existing or find new opportunities for
expanded services to our residents and the
community.
We are an organization in position to meet
challenges and be proactive as we continue
to look at programs and services that focus
on our mission to serve older adults.
We have continued to develop
relationships and partnerships with
organizations in the external community,
and on the state and national level. These

Batter Up!
I loved school as a child -- with the
exception of one class. It wasn’t English or
Social Studies or Science that caused fear
and trepidation…no, it was the dreaded
Gym Class.
My most-feared team activity? Baseball.
My palms still get clammy just thinking
about it. My skills were meager at best; my
aim was not much better. I was absolutely
certain that there wasn’t anything that I,
as an individual, could contribute that
would be of value or worth. I dreaded the
moment when I would be asked to “step
up to the plate.”
As adults we sometimes still fear being
asked to “step up to the plate.” We often
believe there are others who are better
suited to step forward; others who should
bravely assume the risk. As organizations,
we also sometimes fear a leap into
the future. It feels safer to accept the
status quo. However, we also know that
without risk comes little vision, and little
advancement.
We are called to give generously because
we are recipients of God’s generosity,
and because grace has allowed us to be
stewards of those gifts. Here at Wesleyan,
we bravely take a step each day into our
future, and your gifts take that step with
us. Your gifts help our vision to become
a reality. Wesleyan Senior Living is truly
blessed through your time, your talents,
your treasure, and your service.
Actress Lily Tomlin once said, “I always
wondered why somebody didn’t do something
about that. And then I realized I was
somebody.” Philanthropy – through the
giving of dollars, time, and skills – is
fundamental to Wesleyan Senior Living’s
ministry to older adults. As donors, we
sometimes believe that others can give
more, or that their gifts have a larger
impact than our own. As you look through
this issue which features our annual Honor
Roll of Donors, you’ll see hundreds of
contributors who have been inspired to
give. Each one has “stepped up to the
plate” and each one has contributed
greatly to the whole. Imagine the
devastating impact if all these contributors
had thought, “Just let someone else do
it!” or “How can just one gift makes a
difference?”
The time is now. Batter up!

Wesleyan Village Receives National Recognition as a
Certified Center for Successful Aging
Wesleyan Village is proud to announce that it has received the
national designation of Certified Center for Successful Aging
in a competitive application process determined by Masterpiece
Living. Wesleyan Village is the only community in Ohio that has
achieved this recognition.
Masterpiece Living is a lifestyle approach that grew out of
successful aging research studies conducted by the MacArthur
Foundation, and through a continuing partnership with the
Mayo Clinic. Research indicated that individuals experiencing
physical, intellectual, social and spiritual growth as they age
actually live longer, happier, and healthier lives.
Wesleyan Village introduced this concept to our
community in 2012. “The initial testing alone
encouraged me to focus and improve my balance
through simple experiences such as standing on
one foot for so many seconds,” reflected resident Dalton Love.
“Masterpiece Living has caused many of the residents to think
about in engaging in more intellectual and cultural programs.”
Participants have reported that they experience increased social
interaction, self-awareness, a great sense of purpose, and higher
states of mental and physical conditioning.
The prestigious designation acknowledges forward-thinking,
cutting-edge leaders in the aging field who are actively committed
to furthering the successful aging movement. This certification
requires an extensive application process, and is awarded to senior
living communities that meet qualitative and quantitative
criteria that reflect integration of successful aging
principles in the areas of culture, outreach, leadership
commitment, team member engagement, resident
engagement and purposeful programming.

Why We Give...
Children and animals are such a gift! Their delight in
the world around them, their smiles and wagging tails
or very loud purrs, their trust, and their openness are
qualities that warm our hearts and reassure us yet again
that this world is a good one. We are angered when
we hear of or see an abused child or neglected pet. We
find it easy to give to services and groups that serve and
protect these very precious gifts of life. However, older
adults are sometimes overlooked.
We are in the later third of our lives and we have
indeed lived - whether well or poorly - our lives. We
have access to many services that aid us as we age so
the perception is that we are well off. And yet, there
are many adults who have worked all their lives - with
one, two, even three jobs – but receive meager fixed
incomes and are unable to access services that will
enhance the quality of their lives.
In the next two to three generations behind us, the
outlook is not always positive and the 2008 economic
collapse affected many; some individuals have had to
use their savings and retirements funds simply to eat,
pay medical bills and keep a roof over their heads.
Who will care for them as they age and experience
increased medical needs?
Wesleyan Senior Living has provided wonderful care
for Deb’s parents and we love living at Wesleyan
Meadows; what a marvelous community! One of
the reasons we moved into this particular continuing
care retirement community - other than being United
Methodists - is the promise that should we ever run
out of financial resources, the Life Fund will support
our care, and we would not have to leave our beloved
community. This Promise is available to residents on
both campuses.

It is sometimes easier to give to causes that are
more visible in the media. We give to the Life Care
Fund through Wesleyan Senior Living Foundation
in memory of Deb’s parents and in honor of the
generations following us.
Those of our residents who have outlived their own
resources receive benevolent support so they don’t have
to leave our community. Those who may need this
kind of support in the future will be cared for as well.
These gift dollars are part of a legacy of giving back in
gratitude for the lives we have been blessed to have,
and for the care for both Deb’s parents and future
generations.

Why I want to give back
As a long time Associate (over 31 years) at Wesleyan Village, I have had the
privilege of many Resident acquaintances. It has provided me with great
joy through the years. My first involvement in being a contributor was
in 1993, when we first envisioned a new facility. This experience led my
husband Keith and me to support the Life Care Fund, which provides for
Residents of Wesleyan Senior Living who can no longer afford the full cost
of their care. The Fund also provides for those Residents to enjoy many
of the simple things that add to the quality of life, and these “little extras”
keep spirits hopeful and alive. I feel pride that my charitable gifts through
the years have made a difference in Residents’ lives. I believe in the Life
Care Fund, which gives back to those who need it the most.

Fathers
We take seriously our Promise...if a Resident should ever
outlive his or her financial resources, they will continue
to be cared for as part of the Wesleyan family for the
remainder of their lives. It’s a Promise that amounts to
$3.5 million in benevolent care each year.
On behalf of 200 Residents who are helped each year
through the support of our Life Care Fund, we look
with gratitude to our generous friends to continue to
help us provide this vital and life-sustaining ministry.
In April you’ll receive our annual Mother’s and
Father’s Day Appeal in the mail. Your contributions
will directly support those in our care who need our
help – those who, throughout their lifetimes, have
earned this peace and security.
We hope you’ll honor or remember a mother, father,
or another influential person in your own life by giving
generously to this caring and compassionate ministry.

United Methodist Church ourselves, it is comforting to know that these services
