Heritage
The palace of the Dukes of
Burgundy is an emblematic
Dijon monument that stands
proudly in the heart of the city’s
historic district. The successive
dukes who resided here brought
a tasteful architecture to the
building.
chouette
Philippe le Bon Tower, also called Tour de
la Terrasse, was erected between 1450 and
1460. Inside, the sculpted decoration of the
stairway leading to what was the Duke’s
dwelling becomes more lavish as it goes up,
culminating in the magnificent great spiral
vault. After climbing the 316 steps, you will
discover a unique view of Dijon.

This former abbey church, built
in the Burgundian Gothic style,
features a magnificent Roman
crypt, the vestige of a three-storey rotunda built around the year
1000. Discover the martyrium,
featuring multi-coloured marble
pavement and superb sculpted
capitals, in an intimate lighting.
The museum of Burgundian life presents rural
ethnographic heritage through objects collected at the end of the 19th century by Perrin
de Puycousin. See period furniture, domestic
equipment and regional costumes in the
context of their use. Eleven shops once located
in the streets of Dijon have been recreated on
the first floor.

The collection of paintings gives a vast overview
of the Flemish, Italian and French schools from
the 16th to the 19th century, while period furniture and objets d’art enhance the cosy character
of this museum created in 1938.
Musée des
Notre-Dame
This church is a
Burgundian Gothic
masterpiece. At the top
of the southern tower,
Jacquemart, you may admire
a clock made up of a bell and automaton given by
Philip the Bold after he seized it from the Flemish of
Courtrai. The 11th-century black virgin was greatly
venerated; the owl sculpted on a northerly pillar on
the exterior of the church has become a lucky charm.

Dijon
The opulence of this museum’s collections
places it among the most important in all of
France. The flourishing period of the Dukes
of Burgundy is illustrated by the remarkable
tombs of Philip the Bold and John II the
Fearless.

museum scenography!
Founded by Philip
the Bold at the end of
the 14th century and
destined to become
the dynastic burial
place of the Valois
line of the Dukes of
Burgundy, Chartreuse

Of Cluniac influence, the essential
parts of the church date from the
13th century; there are also
Gothic annexes and a Renaissance bell. There is a remarkable collection of 15th-century
Tournai tapestries in the choir
(open to the public from April to
November).

Capital of Burgundy wines.
Beneath these paving
stones are cellars. Since
medieval times, Beaune
has reigned supreme over
the heart of wine culture
and business, and quite
naturally became the capital of Burgundy wines in
the 18th century. A historic
stroll to be embellished
with a few gourmet
touches and a dash of
oenology.
