We’ve been enjoying quite a bit of rain at last but it’s nice to see the sun. April 15 – 17 will be a memorable weekend in Edinburgh. This will be the occasion of the investiture of Iain Gunn as our Chief. Dr. Joseph Morrow, the Lord Lyon King of Arms will be there and will present Iain with his chiefly arms. This will be the first time in 230 years that the Clan has had a Chief. The events of the weekend are open to all and I know that at least a few North American Gunns will be in attendance. Detailed information on the weekend events, accommodations and a booking form can be found in this issue or on our web site. Payment for the weekend events can be made through PayPal. Alise Erickson, our Membership Secretary, has begun working on an election of officers to be held in conjunction with our Annual Meeting in Chicago in June. The Annual Meeting will be held in Chicago at the Westin Chicago Northwest on Friday, June 17, 2016. The Chicago Games will be held Saturday adjacent to the hotel. Details of the meeting and Games were in the last issue of The Gunn Salute and can be found at our web site as well. Be sure to make your reservations at the hotel for accommodations and for the AGM by contacting Jeff Growell at royalcourtusa@gmail.com. The renewed effort to update our list of email contacts has begun. You can find a link on our page that will take you to a form to update your contact information. You can make a selection at the end of the form to receive the Gunn Salute by email, by regular mail or by opting out of mailing and reading it on the web site. Having a more complete list of email contacts will enable us to reach out to members with important information in a timely manner. This project is active on the web site and was not announced until now. We’ve already received several responses which show that lots of you visit the web site regularly. This idea was conceived by Sam Johnson during his term as President. Let’s try to make it work this time. In closing I’d like to thank all of you for the opportunity to serve as your President. I’d like to say thanks to all those who support me in my role, especially my wife, Linda, and all the officers and commissioners who help me on a regular basis. Mise le meas (Yours faithfully), Rich Page 3 The Gunn Salute Clan Gunns re-appearance in the North District by David Bricker For a while now there has not been a Clan Gunn presence. With the help of Harold Pierce and his family from Grand Junction, we made an amazing return. One of the group with Harold Pierce, Mark Larsen even did some framework for the tent on site before the games opened! At the Scots on the Rocks in MOAB, Utah a tent for was set up and the reaction was fantastic. Saturday alone we had no less then 65 unique vistors. Some of them even Gunn! The following statement is from Dan Lamont, Chieftain of the Scots on the Rocks games: "I want to thank you and Clan Gunn for attending the Scots on the Rocks, Moab Celtic Festival. Again it was a very successful year as it was last year and having your clan here just made it that much better. Congratulations on getting best clan parade, we did not give out these awards last year so you were the first." The first picture is Harold Pierce accepting the award. The second picture is of our parade group, from right to left it is: Justin Etchevery, Harold Pierce, Emma-Leigh Larsen, Brielle Larsen, Ariana Sirokman, David Bricker Page 4 The Gunn Salute Flowers of the Forest Landis Gunn, wife of Yale Gunn, passed away in January. Submission Deadlines for The Gunn Salute *March 3 , 2016 (Spring edition) *June 30, 2016 (Summer edition) *September 30, 2016 (Fall edition) *December 31, 2016 (Winter edition) Page 6 The Gunn Salute The Clan Gunn Chiefship Investiture Weekend – Edinburgh April 15th -17th 2016 The clan traditionally meets in the middle of April to celebrate St Donan’s (the patron saint of Clan Gunn) Day. However in April 2016 there will be a slight change to the normal format as we will be celebrating the investiture of Iain A Gunn as the clan’s new Chief. This is a momentous Volumeoccasion 1, Issuefor1 the Clan as it is the first time in more than 230 years that the clan has had a chief and the first time that a chief of Clan Gunn has been formally recognised by the Court of the Lord Lyon, the heraldic authority for Scotland. April 15th We will begin the weekend with an informal dinner on the Friday night at Stac Polly. Named after one of the most popular and best known mountains in Scotland, Stac Polly is also one of Edinburgh’s most popular and pleasant traditional Scottish restaurants. There will be a choice of menus but we will have to pre-order so it is important that you include a contact email address on the booking form so that we make you aware of the choices nearer the time. Saturday morning and afternoon will be free to allow you to look round Scotland’s capital city although those of you on the council will have a council meeting in the morning. April 16th The main event, the investiture of the Chief, will begin sharply at 6.00pm in the Merchants’ Hall, Hanover Street and we would recommend that members of the clan aim to get to the Merchants’ Hall for 5.45pm. We are delighted that Dr Joseph Morrow, Lord Lyon King of Arms has agreed to present Iain Gunn with the new chiefly arms and we anticipate the ceremony (which will take place in the Court Room) will last approximately half an hour. The ceremony will be followed by a champagne reception in the Crush Hall and a full three course dinner with coffee, wine and a dram in the Main Hall. Dress is black tie but we would encourage as many members as possible to come in full Highland dress (kilted) if possible. April 17th The Sunday sees a fairly early start as we have managed to secure a private guided tour to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. This very special guided tour begins at 8.30am and will allow us to experience the charm of the Palace of Holyroodhouse before it opens to the public. The tour will take us behind-the-ropes in several rooms, where an expert guide will tell us about Holyrood's important role today as Her Majesty, The Queen's official residence in Scotland. It will also include access to the West Drawing Room used by members of the Royal Family as a private sitting room during Royal Week and not normally open to the public. The tour will include a glass of champagne and finish at 10.30am with refreshments in the Café at the Palace. The price includes a copy of the official guidebook and tea, coffee and pastries. This relatively early finishing time should allow members to easily catch any trains or flights home. We hope you will agree with us that this is an exciting programme and we very much hope that as many of you as possible will join us in our celebration of recognising the new Chief of Clan Gunn. Accommodation Edinburgh is well serviced with a variety of hotels, guest houses and B&Bs. We have block-booked 15 rooms at the Motel One hotel on Market Street which is a comfortable mid-range hotel very close to Waverly station and only 5 minutes walk from the Merchants Hall. A Gunn Sight Synopsis of the 28th Annual Scotland Connecticut Highland Games October 11th, 2015 Gregory R. Gunn – Ashford, CT On Sunday morning October 11th, 2015 my wife Lynne and I went to the 28th Annual Scotland Connecticut Highland Games (www.scotlandgames.org) located in Scotland, CT approximately 20 miles from our home in Ashford, CT. It was our first time attending the event which is held at the Edward Waldo Homestead. I personally was on a mission from Lord Frank Thomas Gunn Roberts of Glencoe, a first cousin of mine. This mission is in the semblance of Elwood – from the movie “Blues Brothers” 1980. The weather was perfect for a Sunday on Columbus Day Weekend. As my wife and I read through the program of events, Lynne instantly said, “I’m going to this!” It was entitled, “Sheepdog Demonstration’. At that point any doubts I had that Lynne wouldn’t like the festival were extinguished. The “Sheepdog Demonstration” was an all-day event and as we approached the site the demonstration in progress was just finishing up. We would certainly be back for the next one scheduled to start just after opening ceremonies scheduled for noon. The dogs (Border Collies) and sheep (Romneys) needed a break (I should say more the sheep). As we made our way to the Parade Ground area for the Opening Day Ceremony we visited a number of vendor booths offering a variety of Scottish products and food specialties The opening ceremonies were captivating. The various Clans were introduced, the marching bands played a number of Celtic songs, a tribute to those who have left us was heartfelt with a moment of silence, and then the “The Star-Spangled Banner” was played. I believe it was the Late British Real Estate tycoon Lord Harold Samuel who coined the phrase, “Location, Location, Location.” Whether Lord Harold Samuel coined the phrase or not is one for the etymologists to figure out. However, I’m pretty certain that the location of this event is exactly what Lord Harold Samuel was trying to convey. What better place to hold this event than Scotland, CT? Perhaps the Great Scotland itself? If there was one negative of this event I would have to say the long food lines pushed the limit. We met at the food tent and enjoyed the food which consisted of: Haggis Puff – mixture of beef, beef liver, onions, oatmeal and seasoning inside a pastry and Forfar Birdie – beef, sausage and onions inside a puff pastry turnover (as Lynne pointed out it’s a birdie without the bird); Bubble & Squeak – potatoes, onions, cabbage, sausage and bread crumbs; Rumblethump – potatoes, onions, cabbage and cheddar cheese. We enjoyed the Scottish flair for lunch and were off to the Clan Gunn Tent. As we approached the Clan Gunn Tent we couldn’t help but notice the banner proudly stating, “Clan Gunn – We Beat Columbus by 100 years!!!” I suggest to look up the details to that claim online. Upon arrival to the tent Deputy Commissioner Yankee Branch Stephen R. Olsen warmly greeted us. There was plenty of Clan Gunn items available and information abound. Most of the literature pertained to the Westford Knight restoration project and Prince Henry Sinclair’s visit to North America before Columbus arrived in North America (www.clansinclairusa.org). Lynne and I were happy to see our neighbor and friend Charles McCaughtry of the Clan Campbell of Argyll at the Clan Gunn Tent. Page 13 The Gunn Salute After our visit to the Clan Gunn Tent it was off to the Heavy Games. One of my favorite parts of the festival. The competitive components consisted of: sheaf toss, caber toss and stone throw. I’m sore just thinking about it. These women and men athletes are amazing. It was a great experience and one we’re certainly looking forward to next year. We’ve already circled, Sunday, October 9th, 2016 as a day we’ll return to Scotland, CT for the 29th Annual Scotland’s Highland Festival. Now back to why I was and still am on a mission for Lord Frank Thomas Gunn Roberts of Glencoe. As mentioned at the beginning of this writing Lord Frank Thomas Gunn Roberts of Glencoe was unable to attend. The reason being is that he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis also known by its acronym (ALS) or Lou Gehrig’s disease named after the Late Great Yankee Hall of Famer who succumbed to the disease. On Sunday, October 25th, 2015 I attended a spaghetti dinner fund raiser for Lord Frank Thomas Gunn Roberts of Glencoe at the Athol American Legion Hall in Athol, MA. All the proceeds went to assist Lord Frank Thomas Gunn Roberts of Glencoe in his battle with (ALS) which he confronts straight on. The benefit was spearheaded by Lady Mary Anita Andrews Roberts of Glencoe, Lord Frank Thomas Gunn Roberts of Glencoe’s wife. Lady Mary Anita Andrews Roberts of Glencoe could fit right in with my favorite gang of all-time “The Warriors” 1979. Another of my favorite movies. I have the song “I am the Warrior” written by Nick Gilder and Holly Knight and better known for Scandal’s version featuring Patty Smyth playing in my head when I think of Lady Mary Anita Andrews Roberts of Glencoe. Truly amazing her relentless dedication and attitude. There have been others that have pitched in to help Lord Frank Thomas Gunn Roberts of Glencoe including family and friends. Lady Mary Anita Andrews Roberts of Glencoe never fails to mention how much she appreciates their help. I was amazed how everyone contributed to making the benefit run so smoothly. The atmosphere at the benefit was warm and welcoming. I hung out with Lord Frank Thomas Gunn Roberts of Glencoe’s mother Jane (Evashousky) Ersey and her Aunt Peggy Pichette Walkama. I enjoyed their stories and company. Those two young ladies have possible the best sense of humor I have ever witnessed. I cherished the time spent with Lord Frank Thomas Gunn Roberts of Glencoe and how he took the time to show me his many family photographs. The music was provided by Lord Frank Thomas Gunn Roberts of Glencoe’s lifelong friend Garold Amadon. Mr. Amadon is a true troubadour and a one man band. It’s amazing how much sound he puts out. A true entertainer. He did have some help from Mr. Martin who accompanied him on some snazzy snare drumming. I asked Lady Mary Anita Andrews Roberts of Glencoe how she would describe Lord Frank Thomas Gunn Roberts of Glencoe and she said, “He is the most courageous person I have ever met! He never asks why and takes this one day at a time.” Lord Frank Thomas Gunn Roberts of Glencoe’s emails and letters always have a footer that states “Scotland the Brave”. So for Lord Frank Thomas Gunn Roberts of Glencoe and Lady Mary Anita Andrews Roberts of Glencoe it is with utmost respect that I end this story by proclaiming, “Lord Frank Thomas Gunn Roberts of Glencoe the Brave!” Page 14 The Gunn Salute Peggy Pichette Walkama (Thom and Jane's Aunt), Jane (Evashousky) Ersey (Thom's mother), Lady Mary Anita Andrews Roberts of Glencoe, and Lord Frank Thomas Gunn Roberts of Glencoe at the spaghetti dinner held on October 25th, 2015 at the Athol American Legion Hall in Athol, MA.
