By Sandy Tornberg The Federazione Abruzzese del Michigan held its annual Festa Abruzzese on September 21 at the Forestré Banquet Center. After the members and guests had time to socialize and enjoy their dinner, President Enzo Paglia opened the afternoon’s program by explaining the philosophy and importance of the FADM scholarship program. There are three parts to the program the first of which is reimbursement of tuition to member families whose children successfully complete Italian classes through the IACS, Dante Alighieri Society, or Italian American Club of Livonia. See Page 5. The second part is the FADM College Scholarship Program, which awards two $1,000 scholarships to students entering their freshman year, or in process of completing their undergraduate degree. This year’s winners were Alexa Volpe and Robert Simone. Robert Simone is the son of Marc and Christine Simone, and the grandson of FADM member Renata Simone. Robert is a 2014 graduate of Grosse Pointe North High School, where he was inducted into the Academic Hall of Fame with a GPA of 4.05. The Cultural Exchange Fund is the third part of the FADM Scholarship Program. Funded by the Gagliano Aterno Club and FADM, and administered by Wayne State University, it assists students who participate in the Wayne in Abruzzo Program in Gagliano Aterno, in the province of L’Aquila, during the summer. This year FADM scholarships were awarded to Amanda Burgos, Samantha Zalewski and Emily Pastor. After the scholarships were awarded, the talented Aaron Caruso, accompanied by Jackie Lewis Cole, entertained the audience with selections by Abruzzese composer Francesco Paolo Tosti. Tosti was born in Ortona (Chieti) on April 9, 1846 and died in Rome on December 2, 1916. He is remembered for his light, expressive songs, which are characterized by natural, singable melodies and sweet sentimentality. Tosti is also known for his editions of Italian folk songs entitled "Canti popolari Abruzzesi".It was a memorable afternoon of food, education, music, and fun. SEPTEMBER BIRTHDAYS Antonio DiGiorgio, Rosetta DeLuca, Clarice Squillace and Marcello Strussione FADM FAITHFUL AT SHRINE OF THE SORROWFUL MOTHER Get up early on a Sunday morning, sleepy and tired, pack your lunch and go to a parking lot in the dark to meet up with other people who have the same devotion in mind. When you arrive there are 4 or 5 buses in the same area and you have to make sure you are on the right one. After settling in and relaxing with friends, a cup of coffee and cookies and you are on your way. As daylight breaks the laughter and fun turns to song and prayer. Traditional songs that we learned as children either in Abruzzo or here with our parents. There was also prayer to the Virgin Mary to protect us during our journey, both physical and spiritual.. Funny how the Lord’s prayer and the Hail Mary sound so much profound in Italian; especially when done in concert with the travelers. Arriving at the Shrine, there are buses and people from all over the area. Michigan , Ohio and Pennsylvania all travel this day, this Italian Sunday to pay homage to Our Lady. After Mass, there is always lunch. And what a lunch. Everyone shares what they have brought down with them. Frittatta, pasta, chicken (broiled, grilled, boiled, cacciatore, etc) cheeses , sausages, and of course some homemade wine. All this to remember a time long ago where it was common place to do such a journey. Later in the afternoon, a procession for the Rosary was conducted with all the clubs going into the grotto reciting the Rosary, mystery by mystery, Hail Mary for Hail Mary. SHRINE—CONTINUED. After lunch, a procession of the stations of the Cross was conducted by Father Addari. Leading the followers I prayer and song, stopping at each station recalling the last day of Christ. Later in the afternoon, a procession for the Rosary was conducted with all the clubs, holding their banners high, going into the grotto reciting the Rosary, mystery by mystery, Hail Mary for Hail Mary. Hundreds of people following and devoting themselves to the blessed Mother.. After the procession of the Blessed Mother, there was a quick prayer service in the outdoor pavilion church, followed by a blessing from a relic of the cross. As we departed from the Shrine, we sang songs and enjoyed the fellowship only an Left: Lida Strussione with St. Gabriele experience like this can banner. bring. Viva Maria. Dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the Abruzzo Culture -ABRUZZO HERITAGE~ GABRIELE ROSSETTI~ Gabriele Pasquale Giuseppe Rossetti (28 February 1783, Vasto, Abruzzo – 24 April 1854, London) was an Italian poet and scholar who emigrated to England. Born in Vasto in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, the original family of his ancestors was Della Guardia. Since many members of the Della Guardia family had red hair, they were given the nickname Rossetti approximately four generations before Gabriele's birth.[1] Rossetti's support for Italian revolutionary nationalism forced him into political exile in 1821. Early career and exile [edit]Rossetti's first edition of poems was printed in 1807 by Giovanni Avalloni, who offered to have Rossetti's poems published after hearing him recite a few passages. The volume was never reprinted and contains poems that Rossetti himself describes by saying that some of them were "poor" and none of them were "exactly good".[2] Throughout his early career, Rossetti published poems that were "patriotic" and supported the "popular movement" in Sicily which resulted in him receiving a grant from Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies in 1820. When the king revoked the constitution in 1821, many supporters of the constitution were persecuted and forced into exile, and Rossetti then lived in Malta for three years before settling in London in 1824. He held the post of Professor of Italian at King's College London from 1831, as well as teaching Italian at King's College School, until failing eyesight led to his retirement in 1847.[3] Rossetti's published works include literary criticism, Romantic poetry such as his long poem Il veggente in solitudine of 1846, and his Autobiography. He is thought to be the basis of the character Pesca in Wilkie Collins' 1860 novel The Woman in White. He also wrote commentaries on Dante Alighieri in which he attempted to show evidence of mysterious ancient conspiracies in his works.[4]He married Frances Polidori, daughter of another Italian exile Gaetano Polidori, and they had four children: Maria Francesca Rossetti—Writer Dante Gabriel Rossetti—Poet , Writer William Michael Rossetti—Writer , Critic, Biographer Christina Georgina Rossetti— Poet Canto poetico a .....Vasto Vasto Gabrelle Rossetti Antico Municipio de’ Romani Ove apersi le luci ai rai dei giorno. Beginning with our 15th Anniversary Gala dinner, we marched into the new year with new members and added fellowship events. Our Pasta and Fagioli cook off had 12 entrees and was a great success. Our Christmas Party had over 220 people with our new partners, Gagliano Aterno and Club Pacentro. We hope this will be the start of a new era of joint cooperation in events for the Abruzzese community. We also have a new CRAM being formed with the new government in Abruzzo, and we are now a key group in the organization. Our newsletter is known to the CRAM and to other Abruzzese Federations around the world. Yet there still so much to do, but with the help of and support of everyone in the FADM we can make it all happen. Merry Christmas to everyone and a Happy New Year.
