Your NARCOA insurance coverage through General Accident and
United Shortline Insurance Services €xpires on January 91, 2002.
Everyone needsto ren€w their insurance coveragein oder to partic!
pate in NAiCOA insur€d excursionsbeginning F€bruary 1, 2002.
Members should be aware oftwo important changes this year. First,
our thr€€-year contract with Geneml Accident has expircd. We are
cunently rcnegotiating insurance coverage for 2002. At this time I do
not have details ofinsurance cost or even the insurance canier thst
NARCOA will select.Hopefully ifall goeswell, you willfrnd insurance
program details and application forms ins€rted separately in this issue of atE sBTofI .
Second, the NARCOA Board ofDirectors has adopted a new Rule
Book #5. Your old Rule Book Certifrcarion Card wai based on Rule
Book #4 and that certification card will expire January 31, 2002. In
ord€r to run your car at an insured meet you will need a new NARCOA Rule Book Certification Cad. The September/October2001 issue of TtrE SDnOrr details the procedure to obtain a new certification card. Ifyou have misplacedthat issue, send a stamped, self-addreEsedbusinesssizeenvelopeandrequest a rule book test form from:

Don't let your insurance coveragelapse. Cun€nt participantE should
retum their renewal applications as soon a6 possible. The NARCOA
personal liability and physical damage policiescover the memb€r all
year long, notjust at NARCOA-insured excursions.Yourhomeowner
or automobile policies do not nolmally cover third party physical injuly or property damagerelated to railcar liability, nor physical damageto yourmotorcar. So rctum your applicationsbefore?1/02 so that
you nave no gaps rn coverag€.
Again, if all goessmoothly with the insurance coveragerenegotiations, you will find the 2002-2003Application, NARCOA A$eement,

SeveBl years previously,on the Nodhwestern PacificRaitroad.Dr.
Bob Church'e MT 14 (with a disabledMT 19 in tow) hit a sun-kink on
a superelevatedcurve that derailed the car. and as the car hit th€
expos€dties, it too turned tmnsversely with a b ck wall siop. Both
Bob and Jeannewerefirmly strappedin. and atrhoughpre ) *verFty
shaken up, neither was injured in any way. For the observerson the
gmund at the time, and for those looking at this incident onty in retrospect, therc waEnot a scintilla ofa doubt then, nor now, that the seat
belts alone prcvented both ofthem from beins forcefulv thrown out

getner,
Motorcaru almost all have averylow centerof gravitv, even j,hough
the "house"or cab above it may be retativelv high. As a result, \,hen
derailment occurs, motorcarsusually stay upright. Rolloverscan and
do occur but usually only ifthe derailment causesthc car to so dos.n
an embankment, or the special circumstance wh.,r. a shori $,heel
ba8ecar (i.e. MT19) stubs its toe (i.e. turntable hitiins a hieh cfoss,

being thrown out to the t€nder mercies offirmtv fixod sicct r.rils rnd
exposedti€s.
The primary purposeofmotorcar seat belts is clearly and simplv is
minimize injury by reBtraining on€ from b€ins thrown out ofhis or hor
seat, and most importantly, actually out ofthc car. Keep in mind thlt
ifone is thrown out ofthe car, it js far more tikelv to bc hcad or uppcr
body firsr.
Suitable afiermarket seat belts are commonly avaitablc nt NAI]A
and oth€r good auto supply storcs- They comc complete wjth mounting hadware. An inexpensivesourceis the back seat belt assemblies
obtained from cam in wrecking yards. Back seat belts usually havc
had little use so are usually in eood condition. Seat belrs should always be mounted firmly to the Irame ofthe motorcdr. never thc lramc
ofthe seat, or simply through the flimsy sheet motal or pll, woodltoorins,
Op€n, and "historical" motorcars withour separdresearsarc a special problem for which there may be no satislactory seat belt solution.
I have loved the feel of mindtessty breezing along in my open 1946
CNW M19, while at the same time, I have becomegraphically aware
of what can and will happen to me, and those others aboard whom I
love, should the car derait at any but th€ lowest speed.
Argument haE been made that if we cannol mount scat belts to
restrain shoulders (as in automobites)that we should not have seat
belts at all. On most motorcars, this type of restraint is simplv not
possible.
ofcourseand in rhis regardlap resrrarnr. alon" hav. ro be an
acceptablecompromis€.
Argument is also made that not having seat belts is an important
personalexpressionofthe twe ofindependencelookedfor in this hobbv.
In the real world ofsurvival and rationality, however,"commons€nsc',
should easily hump "independence"in this regard.

hosting the event, and looks forward to returning for further runs.
TEE SETOFF c NoaemberlDecernber.
YPRail became the first heritage operator to host a run by memberc of the ASSCO,with an event run over the Labor Day Long week,
end ofseptember 29, 30 and October 1.
The track runs from Wallamo to Bute on the Yorkc Peninsula. with
Wallaroo itselfbeing about 150km (95 miles) north ofAdelaide by road.
The corridor is broad gauge.
It was once part ofa profltable private company, back in the 19th
century, when run as a narrow gaug€(42 ) iine. Later acquircd by the
South Australian (Govemment)
Railways,it was conveft€dto brtad
gauge (63 ) with standard gauge
addedtowards the later part of ihc
20th century. It was closedin the
early r990s when under the managem€nt of the Australian National Railways Commission. Wc
ran using broad gaugevehicles.
The membeN of ASSCOextend
a warm note of thanks to l?Rail
for their support of its activities,
and in particular to Peter Carter,
who not only assist€dwith the finalization ofan ac€essagreement,
but also braved to ride as our
Safeworker.We also acknowledge
Walne Wilkins who drew the short
straw to come with us as safe
worker on the Sunday, when it happenedto rain, hcavilv.
As part of thi6 run, we also had the pleasure ol thc company of
Steve Hooper,Transport SA, Rail Safety Section, who completedpart
ofour annual complianceaudit.

Low Tech Gas Gauge
by the CollectiveExpertiseof lvlembers
The Army surplus Jeep I drove during high school utitized a
wooden stick for a gas gauge if the bottom of the stick showed any

With the addition ofnumbem, you can get a nore accurate reading. Calibration for a gas gauge is below. NumbeN are the distance
from bottom oftank (Fairmontal€s King models)to the fuel level.

Jim Appleby wdtes, 'came
across this little blurb that I
found somewhere many years ago
and put away because I enjoyed
reading it. I can't remember
where it came from but I thought
some of our group might get a
chuckle out ofit too. lt was tiUed:
Doesn? Anyone Own a Woodings?
Dick Raisanen writes from Mesa, Arizona that he has recently purchased a Woodingsmotorcar in Maine and brought it hom€. Now he
fears he has one ofthe few in existence, since "most of the articles are
about the Fairmont motorcar." He would Iike to hea? fmm others who
ownWoodings,so he can network concemingparts, maintainence, etc.
The roster Iists a coupleofdozen Woodingsowners, so perhaps some
ofyou could contact Dick at:
