“Go Forth”
I’m in Israel for a few more days; hopefully
you have seen some photos and reports back home
about our adventures here. While we continue to
explore the land in which Torah first flourished, you
should continue to study that same Torah. Last
month, readers of this column learned the names of
the Torah’s five books. This month let’s learn the
content of the first book, Bereshit/Genesis:
Bereshit is composed of twelve weekly
parshas, which are read in sequence over the course
of the twelve weeks immediately following Simhat
Torah. The first parsha, also called Bereshit,
describes the creation of the world and the first
people; Noah tells the story of the flood; Lekh Lekha
introduces us to Sarah and Abraham and begins the
story of the Jewish people, and Vayera relates their
many adventures. In Hayyei Sarah we have the story
of Rebecca, who becomes Isaac’s wife, in Toldot we
hear about the complicated relationship between their
sons Esau and Jacob, and in Vayeitzei Jacob flees
Esau and works for his father-in-law Laban in order to
marry both Rachel and Leah. Vayishlakh describes
Jacob’s return to Canaan, Vayeisheiv introduces us
to his son Joseph, whose story continues through
parshat Miketz and parshat Vayiggash. The Joseph
saga concludes in parshat Vayehi, having taken him
from Canaan to Egypt, along with his entire family.

RABBI’S REFLECTIONS
“Go Forth”
That’s Bereshit, in a nutshell. But cracking that
nut takes a lot more time. I won’t list them all here,
but every day of the week we have at least one
class at Beth Judea on some aspect of Torah,
running from 10 minutes to an hour or more,
depending on the session. In this Shanah Torah, a
Year of Torah, take the time to connect to the book
that made us who we are. I recognize that for some
that means shaking up their day or week and, more
drastically, reimagining themselves as active
learners.
We have a model for that in the book of Bereshit
in parshat Lekh Lekha, which contains what one
writer has called the only new idea anyone has
ever had: Leave home. Prior to the time of
Abraham, and persisting in some societies until our
own time, the vast majority of people were born,
lived and died in the same place. Women did what
their own mothers did; men followed their fathers’
beliefs and behaviors as well. When God tells
Abraham and Sarah to leave their parents’ home
and homeland, to go somewhere that will be their
inheritance in perpetuity, where their descendants
will be as numerous as the stars, it is in the context
of a time and place where leaving is itself a
radically transforming act. To abandon the
predictable and time-honored practices of one’s
culture and home, to create something new and
become something other than what they were, was
meant to transform Abraham and Sarah, and it did.
We too have to leave the safety of the familiar,
especially at a time when what we are used to is
the absence of serious Torah study. You don’t
have to be a sage to study; being a Jew is reason
enough to engage in the intellectual and moral
challenges that the Torah provides. This month, I
urge you too to go forth from your native land to a
land that I will show you, the land of knowledge
and connection. Then shall your name be great,
and you shall be a blessing.

polish, nail polish remover and small toiletries
and lotions for CJE senior life residents.
Helping Hands at Hawthorn
The Northwest Suburban Collaborative presents a
drop-in program for young children and their families
from 10am-12 noon at Westfield Hawthorn Mall in
Vernon Hills on Sunday, Nov. 9. There will be six
tables that offer projects for young children to learn to
help to give back to others. No registration. Email

LEADING A SHIVA MINYAN CERTIFICATION
LEADING A SHIVA MINYAN
A Midwest Region Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs and the Cantors Assembly Program
– Taught by Hazzan Roger Weisberg, Congregation Beth Judea
This program is a short course leading to certification as a Shiva Minyan Leader, or for those that are not
Hebrew fluent, a Shiva Minyan Assistant.

What you will learn:

Ritual aspects of a Shiva Minyan including chanting, service flow, mood, concluding thoughts, especially the on
last night.
Recognizing the audience needs and comfort level. (Knowledgeable vs. Uninitiated Worshippers). Leader
presence from time you arrive to time depart. Psychological aspects.
Laws regarding Shiva period.
Assistants will learn the laws, audience needs and how to assist the Leader at the Minyan. Men who are Leaders and
Assistants can be partnered to attend a particular Minyan.
What you need to attend:



Hebrew fluency a must for Leaders.
Interest in learning about Shiva Law, rituals, people skills for Leaders and Assistants.

INTERFAITH THANKSGIVING COMMUNITY CELEBRATION
INVITATION FOR ADULTS AND CHILDREN AGES 8 – 14 TO PARTICIPATE IN THE CHOIR
Dear Members and Friends,
Every year, Beth Judea takes part in a very beautiful and meaningful onehour Interfaith Celebration on the Sunday evening just prior to Thanksgiving.
This year, the event will be held at St. Mary Church on November 23, 2014
at 7:00 pm. We join with local congregations of all faiths. It is truly a
heartwarming experience, coming together to offer our collective prayers of
thanksgiving, grateful for the freedom, equality and dignity which we are all afforded in this
great country. It is also customary to bring non-perishable food items as one more way in
which we can reach out to those less fortunate. The one-hour ceremony is followed by an
informal social hour with light refreshments.
Much of this festive event is expressed through music and singing. There are bell choirs, and
always a cute, musical puppet presentation based on our shared religious values. What is
particularly relevant from my perspective is that our own interested singers from Beth
Judea, both adult and children, are able to participate in the community choirs, along
with members from Temple Chai, Beth Am and the various other participating congregations.
We also have opportunities for musicians to participate this year.

ADULT CHOIR
Our children, ages 8-14, have been invited to
participate in a community choir, along with the
children from various other participating
congregations. Reading music is helpful, since
participants will receive the two musical selections,
but if your child is musical and can carry a tune,
that’s all that’s required – the music should not be
difficult! This year’s theme is “Teach us God’s Way
and Walk in God’s Path”
For adults who would like to join the
adult community choir that evening,
there are three rehearsals scheduled
in the weeks prior to the service, all
held at St. Mary Church at 7:00 pm.
The dates for the adults are:
Along with attending the program that Sunday
evening there will be two evening rehearsals and a
final run-through at approximately 6:15 pm the
evening of the program. The dates for the rehearsals

KOL NIDRE APPEAL 2014
Shabbat Shalom and Good Yontef!
It is an honor to be your synagogue President and to have the
opportunity to speak to you this evening. There are 2 things of
which I am certain: First, you want me to make this brief; and
second, I want to make this brief.

MISSION STATEMENT
Congregation Beth Judea is a
welcoming, egalitarian synagogue
whose mission is to create a warm
and inviting home that serves the
lifelong spiritual, educational and
fellowship needs of our members.
Consistent with the principles of the
Conservative Movement, we
embrace Torah and our responsibility
to serve and support the greater
Jewish community, the community at
large, the United States of America
and the State of Israel.
I am here to ask you to further support Congregation Beth Judea. I
say “further” as you already support CBJ in the most critical way.
You belong. Our membership dues are as important to Beth Judea
as property taxes are to our public schools. The ability to make
payroll, to keep the electricity on, to educate ourselves and our
children, and so on, depend on membership and dues. All of us in
this room have made the decision to help our CBJ community, to
help the family to your right, and to help the family to your left, by
BELONGING, by becoming MEMBERS. I commend you, and
sincerely thank you for making this decision. For the fact is, if we
were to prorate the dues according to our individual usage,
Congregation Beth Judea would cease to exist.
A couple of seconds ago, I said that you BELONG to Beth Judea.
That’s only half of it for Beth Judea BELONGS to YOU, as well.
Earlier this year, you were asked to complete a survey about
different facets of CBJ. The findings demonstrate that, on the
whole, members are pleased with CBJ. Members are happy with
our clergy and professional staff. Congregants are particularly
satisfied with the religious school programs, and are pleased with
the increased adult education offerings. It appears that we are
moving in the right direction to consistently achieve our mission, “to
create a warm and inviting home that serves the lifelong spiritual,
educational and fellowship needs of our members.”
The survey has also identified some areas in which we can improve,
and action plans are being devised and implemented. For instance,
congregants will get to choose how to receive their synagogue
communications in the future. An Engagement Committee will be
formed to develop ideas on how to enhance the sense of
BELONGING to our CBJ community. Our website will have a
secure link where we can register for events, view Yahrzeit
information, pay dues and tuition, and much more. Adult course
offerings will be reviewed, with consideration given to the time of
day they are held. We will be rolling out an updated Chavurah
program in an attempt to build smaller social communities within our
larger CBJ community. This is but a short list of how the survey
data is being used. So you see, Congregation Beth Judea does
BELONG TO YOU.

KOL NIDRE APPEAL 2014 (continued)
As you may remember from my first Word article, I am an aleph drop-out. It has been a source of insecurity for
me for many years. I am heeding Rabbi Pivo’s challenge, using this Shanah Torah/A Year of Torah, to learn
how to read Hebrew. I am currently enrolled in the Men’s Club Hebrew Literacy I, scheduled to become a Bat
Mitzvah in the spring of 2016. After only 3 classes, my classmates and I already feel a bond over our shared
journey. I confess that I am still insecure about my ability to learn Hebrew. When I put that out on Facebook, I
received many offers of help and words of encouragement from CBJ friends. Our congregants are the best!
As a community, especially a religious community, we are here for one another. And this is why I stand before
you tonight, to ask you to financially support this community of ours. Our dues and fees only cover about 80%
of our operating expenses, the remaining 20% comes from the Kol Nidre appeal and various fundraisers
throughout the year. Our largest expense behind payroll is dues reduction. We never want to deny
membership to anyone because of an inability to pay. But, the money has to come from somewhere. In order
to maintain a balanced budget, if we exceed the amount allotted for reduced dues, the expense must be offset
elsewhere. In other words, something else will have to be cut. Please do not let our wonderful programs,
classes, and events be cut.
Please open your envelope and remove your Pledge Card. Turn down the tab corresponding to the amount
that you wish to donate. More than one tab can be turned down to create an amount that is not represented on
the card. Please fund Congregation Beth Judea generously.
Also, you will find a Spiritual Pledge Card in your envelope. The survey found that some of you are happy with
your level of involvement, and that’s okay. But, for those of you who are looking to become a more active Beth
Judea community member, the Spiritual Pledge Card is the easiest way to take the first step! Serve on a
committee--maybe social action interests you. Attend more Shabbat services, or plan on attending minyan
more than you currently do. Remember, we now have morning minyans too. Attend more events. Maybe this
will be the year you go to the Purim Masquerade!! Do you like gardening? Turn down the “Facility” tab and
when you’re contacted tell them you would like to help maintain the flower beds. Peruse the Program Guide.
You can easily find a different fun activity to attend every month! Make a commitment to yourself to become
more involved, for your own betterment and for the betterment of the Congregation Beth Judea community. If
you are currently involved with something listed on the card, it is not necessary to turn down the tab. You will
be contacted soon to start your involvement!

Divorce Support Group
Experiencing a divorce can be one of the most
difficult and stressful transitions in life, affecting
adults, children, and extended family.
We are reaching out as a synagogue community
to those who are in the process of divorcing, or
have recently gone through a divorce, to offer
support at this extremely stressful time.
This group, designed for both men and women,
would meet weekly with our member
Ellene Lammers, a trained therapist, and
Rabbi Pivo.

B’NAI MITZVAH BIOs
Justin Matthew Levey will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on
Saturday morning, November 8, 2014.
Justin attends Twin Groves Middle School, where he plays trombone and
percussion in the band. Justin started reading Torah in fourth grade as a
member of the Junior Yad Squad. He is passionate about sports; he plays
basketball and baseball, and watches all sports on tv with his dad. Justin
also loves music, movies, video games, and spending time with his family
and friends. Justin is looking forward to going to Camp Chi for the first time
this summer.
Since Justin loves playing baseball, he chose to be a buddy for the Buffalo Grove Recreation
Association (BGRA) Buddy Baseball program as a mitzvah project. He helped players enjoy the game
by accompanying them on the field and helping them with the fundamentals of the game. This was a
rewarding experience for him, and he will continue to be part of this program next season.
Our family, proud parents Alisa and Ross Levey, sister Hillary, and grandmother, Betty Schraiber, is
overjoyed by this accomplishment in Justin's life. In times of great celebration, however, it is important to
remember those loved ones who are no longer with us. We remember and honor the memory of his
grandfathers, Milton Schraiber and Howard Levey. He was deeply loved by his paternal grandmother,
Lee Levey. Justin is celebrating his simcha with many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Justin would like to give special thanks to Cantor Weisberg and Hannah Mills for their guidance in
preparing him for this milestone. Rabbi Pivo, Cantor Weisberg, and all of his teachers at Beth Judea
have provided Justin with a great foundation and appreciation for his Jewish heritage.
Alex Schwartz is a 7th grade honor student at Cooper Middle School. Alex
enjoys basketball, skateboarding, gaming and spending time with friends. Alex has
many talents which included building a computer this summer. Alex loves to travel
and enjoys the beach, ocean and water sports. Some of Alex's recent favorite
vacations are LA, Captiva Island and cruising to the Bahamas.
Alex has a kind heart and is always thinking of things he can do to help people.
Alex will be helping a family in need this holiday season by providing holiday gifts
for the children through a program called Hope For The Holidays. Alex has been
collecting books for Bernies Book bank which provides books for children at risk.
Alex is sharing his special day with his parents Faith and Matt, his older sister
Haley, his younger brother Josh, grandparents( Adair and Michael Gerstein and
Fran and Ronald Schwartz) and Great Grandmother Bella Schwartz.
Alex and his family would like to thank Rabbi Pivo, Cantor Weisberg, Anna Besser, Kim Abern and all his
wonderful hebrew teachers through the years for the wonderful Jewish education they have provided to get

B’NAI MITZVAH BIOs
Eli Robert Shultz will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday
Morning, November 29, 2014.
Eli is a seventh grader at Aptakisic Junior High in Buffalo Grove.
He is a clutch baseball player, having played both Fall and Spring Baseball,
with a full time travel program, the Lake County Stars, for the last 3 years,
and BGRA baseball for the 5 years prior. As a lefty, his high velocity
pitching and ability to pick off players from First Base, are his trademarks.
He’s left many a player striking out “looking.” In his spare time Eli enjoys
playing video games and researching stats on the IPad for his Fantasy
Football team, and spending time with his family.
He is a Chicago fan of all sports, following the stats and cheering on of the White Sox, Cubs,
Blackhawks, Bulls and Da Bears. His favorite month of the year is March when the Brackets and March
Madness are celebrated.
Eli’s Mitzvah project is composed of 3 parts: he bought, and is donating, school supplies to the Ark. Eli,
in August, had a fundraiser at Extreme Trampoline, with proceeds going to Kids for Kids, a foundation in
Israel which assists kids whose families are victims of terrorism. Finally, at his celebration – Eli is
collecting used Tennis Shoes to be donated to Nike, for their Reuse-A-Shoe program. These donated
tennis shoe soles are ground up and made into rubber playground surfaces to be placed in
underprivileged neighborhoods across the United States.
Joining Eli in his Simcha will be his beaming parents Carrie and Mike, brother Zachary, Grandma
Melinda and Zayde Michael Jacobson, Grandma Enid Shultz, Uncle Charlie Jacobson and his Aunt
Diane, Cousins Max and Hannah Shultz, extended family and friends. They all could not be more proud.
Eli and his family, would like to thank their Beth Judea Family, Rabbi Pivo, Hazzan Weisberg, his tutors
Andrea Dickson, Mark Hirshman and his Zayde , and his amazing Hebrew teachers for their help,
guidance and support in helping him mold his strong Jewish identity.
LIFE IN ISRAEL – THE GOODMAN’S BLOG
Howie and Suzanne Goodman were valued members at Beth Judea until they
decided to make aliyah in 2009. The Goodmans have agreed to provide us
with a blog on their experiences as new olim in Israel. Though we continue to
miss the Goodmans, we can all look forward to reading about their adventures
in Israel through the blog.
In this issue, they have shared their thoughts and feelings about the recent
conflict between Israel and Hamas. Below is an excerpt of their blog:

PROGRAM FOR YOUNG CHILDREN
AGES NINE AND YOUNGER
Dozens of families with young children are coming together to
teach the important lesson of helping others through mitzvot.
As a group, the families are volunteering six times this year for a
variety of non-profits across Chicagoland.
All activities are geared toward ages nine and younger.
Children will receive a “Mitzvah Club” card.

EDUCATION
During the High Holiday season, we are instructed to conduct a self-inventory to determine what actions we took during
the past year that are worthy of repetition, which need improvement and which should be eliminated. In the synagogue,
we davened and contemplated our decisions for the upcoming year. We listen to the Rabbi’s words of inspiration to
guide us on our journey for a better New Year.
Tishrei was full of holy days and opportunities for self-examination. Sukkot and Simchat Torah brought us together as a
community in prayer and in celebration. Is it no wonder then, the Hebrew month of Cheshvan is referred to as “Mar
Cheshvan” (Bitter Cheshvan) because it contains no holidays.
During the month of Cheshvan, we, as our ancestors did, return to our normal routines of work and/or study without
the interruption of holidays on the calendar. We fill our leisure time with activities that interest our families. How easy it
is to return to our pre-Tishrei state of going through our daily lives without giving a thought to the three values of the
High Holidays—T’shuvah, Tefillah and Tzedakah.
Let’s turn “Mar Cheshvan” from its bitter state to one of sweetness. Cheshvan gives us an opportunity to put into
practice all that we promised ourselves during the previous month. It gives us a chance to make our resolutions a reality.
Cheshvan is, therefore, the clean slate that we need to start our year afresh. May we be aware of our actions to keep
our relationships with our family, friends and classmates sweet for the coming year.
Mitzvah Day
Mitzvah Day is around the corner. On Sunday, Nov. 2nd, all classes will participate in creating Mitzvah projects for various
organizations. Please join us at 11:30 am for an assembly in which all grades will display what they have made and
where it will be going.
Dalet Family Program
On Sunday, Nov. 16th Dalet families will participate in a program, “Becoming a Responsible Digital Citizen” from 10:30
am – 12 pm. Mindy Gold from BJE will be presenting a program that focuses on the issue of social media interactions
and what Judaism has to say about these issues.
Second Grade Family Program
On Sunday, Nov. 16th at 10:30 am Second Grade families will be gathering together for a special Family Education
opportunity, “My Mishpacha.” This is a chance to learn about our own family trees and our Jewish Family tree, the
family of Abraham and Sarah. Each family will have a chance to make a very special family tree to take home so
remember to bring copies of photos of you, your children, parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles and
cousins. Headshots work best and yes, pictures of the family kelev and hatul are welcome as well.

WHAT’S UP IN THE WORLD OF OUR YOUTH???
Make sure to be on the lookout for a big bin in the lobby of the synagogue. It has been a tradition each year for the BJUSY USYers to
give up their Halloween trick-or-treating time to instead go door to door and collect non-perishable food items to help restock the Vernon
township food pantry heading into the winter season. This year trick-or-treating time falls during Shabbat and as a result the USYers will
be unable to go trick-or-canning. As a result we are reaching out to all of you for some help in still being able to restock the food pantry.
Over the next month (until just before Thanksgiving) we will be collecting non-perishable food items in the lobby of the synagogue. You
can send them with your students to school or bring them with you when you come to one of our many daily minyanim (M-Th 7:30 pm or
morning minyan early on Monday and at 7:30 am Tuesday-Friday and 9am on Sunday). Please only place non-perishable food items
in the bins and the USYers will take care of delivering them to the Vernon Township food pantry. Any help you can give us in
continuing this tradition would be much appreciated.
KADINKERS (3rd-5th grade)
Our Kadinkers group followed up their fun apple picking adventure with a Sukkot themed Pizza in the Hut party. We had a giant
inflatable, all the pizza any one person could eat, and all kinds of fun activities going on in and around the Sukkah. We had such a great
time exploring the synagogue and even playing football outside. Everybody left exhausted and ready for a great afternoon nap. This
month, as part of our celebration of the IDF we are heading to rinkside sports in Gurnee on November 2nd. We will have a chance to ice
skate, play video games, and play laser tag (IDF style) all in one place. It is going to be a blast!!!
KADIMA (6th-8th grade)
Kadima members should be on the lookout for the Kadima Board application packets. We are looking for Kadimaniks who want to take a
lead role in the group and help decide what programs we should be doing. They may even get a chance to help lead some programs for
some of the younger kids.
During this past month the Kadima group got to participate in a fruit ninja teen minyan and have an awesome Sukkot adventure trip to
Richardson Farm where we went in the world’s largest corn maze and then roasted our own hot dogs and s’mores on an open bonfire.
This coming month will see a number of opportunities for Kadimaniks to get involved. We have the Kadima and Kadinkers rinkside sports
trip on November 2nd, as part of our IDF celebration month we have the Krav Maga teen minyan on November 22nd, and on November
26th we are joining together with Beth El in Highland Park to offer a Dave and Busters trip exclusively for Kadima.
In addition to all of the wonderful program throughout the month make sure to get signed up for the upcoming Kadima Konvention and 8th
Grade Shabbaton. We will get together for 3 incredible days at the Perlstein Resort at Camp Chi. The trip is amazing as we join 6th-8th
graders from all across Chicagoland and Wisconsin and it even includes a trip to Kalahari. Registration information is included on here or
you can contact Marc Sender for more details. Subsidies are available to make the trip very affordable to all who want to go!!!
USY (BJUSY) (9th-12th grade)
Our high school group has been incredibly busy. We have had a fruit ninja teen minyan, continued to help seniors at the Gidwitz center
and helped pack lunches for A Just Harvest Shelter. We also had an incredible sukkah hop adventure. A huge thank you goes out to the
Malkins, the Neimans, and the Robbins for hosting us for the annual sukkah hop. We also enjoyed some interesting food at this years
Iron Chef BJUSY event.
Next month we have a nerf war and a trip to Laserquest planned as part of our IDF celebration month. We are also going to be joining
together with the region for the annual Turkey Dance.
Make sure you do not miss out on the CHUSYfest CHUSYworld adventure Disney style. We are going to spend 3 incredible days at the
Perlstein Resort at Camp Chi. The youth committee has approved a huge subsidy for this event taking the cost down to only $199 for
BJUSY members and more subsidy is available if needed. If you have any questions about the trip contact a board member or Marc
Sender.

For thousands of years, Judaism has been interpreting
and applying the Torah to everyday life. This class follows
the Tanach cycle. Each week we will read through several
chapters a week of the Nevim (Prophets) texts, then on to
Ketuvim (Writings), then back to Torah again.
Parsha Perspectives
Thursday evenings after minyan (7:45—8:00 pm)
Do you have 10 minutes to spare? It only takes 10
minutes to get started on a lifelong journey. Spend each

For nearly a thousand years, Jews have understood the Torah through the eyes of
Rabbi Shlomo Yitzhaki, or Rashi. His commentary has been the indispensable source for
beginners and expert students alike to understand Torah. Rashi's brief, clear comments are the best starting
point for an in-depth study of our most vital texts.

Sisterhood Update – November 2014
We hope everyone had wonderful, meaningful High Holidays, Sukkot, and Simchat Torah.
Sisterhood is looking forward to our annual Membership Dinner on November 10th. We are having hors
d'oevres, dinner and entertainment. The theme is "Books", and Susan Stone, Master Storyteller, will delight
us with her tales based on our Jewish heritage. For our "Tikun Olam project, we are asking that attendees
bring children's books for grades K-6 for Bernie's Books to distribute. Many thanks to Lauri Rosenbloom, our
Event Chair, and her wonderful committee who have been working so diligently to make this a successful
event. Please make your reservation and join us.
The November Book Club selection is THIS IS WHERE I LEAVE YOU by Jonathan Tropper, and the
meeting, which is open to everyone, will be on 11/19/14, 7:30 PM, at.

MEN’S CLUB
Congregation Beth Judea’s Men’s Club is a vital arm of our synagogue community. Two thousand
years ago Hillel said, “If I am not for myself, who will be for me? Yet if I am only for myself, what am
I? And if not now, when?” Congregation Beth Judea’s Men’s Club needs your participation to help
strengthen our Jewish community by involving Jewish men in Jewish life. Please join us by sending
your completed membership application and check for the amount of dues to Men’s Club at
Congregation Beth Judea.
This past month Men’s Club held our annual Steak and Scotch in the Sukkah dinner. This is one of
our most popular programs and all had a great time. Thanks to Allen Harris, David Granoff , David and
Naomi Weil for planning, leading and coordinating this event. A special thank you to both Sarit Elran
and Manny Velazquez for all of their help. We could not have done it without them!
The Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs has identified a gap in our community. There is a shortage of
men who can lead a Shiva minyan. As innovators, the Midwest Region of FJMC and it’s member clubs
will participate in a pilot program to fill this gap. In a joint effort with the Cantor’s Assembly, Cantor
Stoehr of Congregation Beth Shalom in Northbrook, Illinois developed a Shiva minyan leader and
assistant program leading to certification. Four synagogues in the Midwest region have been selected as
sites where this course will be offered. Our own Hazzan Roger Weisberg will be teaching this course at
Congregation Beth Judea in November. Please see the attached flyer for dates and times. Contact
Hazzan Weisberg directly if you are interested in taking this course. I plan to do so myself!
Following the death of Rabbi Pivo’s mother in January, Congregation Beth Judea began holding
morning minyan seven days a week. The minyan allowed Rabbi Pivo and others who are obligated to
say kaddish to do so, a need that is ongoing. It has also created a wonderful way to engage in prayer on
a daily basis and to enjoy each others company with light refreshments after minyan. The ongoing
strength of the morning minyan will depend upon all of us. In order to sustain this vital component of
synagogue life, Men’s Club has requested that its members commit to one day a week year round. All
Men’s Club members are asked to attend the daily minyan on Wednesday. However, if your schedule is
such that Wednesday is not feasible, attendance at morning minyan any other day during the week
would be greatly appreciated.
In early December, Men’s Club will be sponsoring a free Stop Smoking session as part of the FJMC
Health and Wellness program to improve the health of our members and those of our synagogue
community. This will be lead by our own Sandy Victor, a NGH certified hypnotherapist. The program
will be held on Thursday, December 11 at 8 PM. It is open to all members of Congregation Beth Judea
as well as all family members that are living with them. Please contact the synagogue office if you plan
to attend.
Speaking of Sandy Victor, please be sure to congratulate him for his selection as the 2015 Midwest
Region FJMC Ma’asim Tovim Award recipient. The award which means “doer of good deeds” is the
highest recognition a region can bestow upon one of its members. The award recognizes significant
accomplishments the honoree has made to his Men’s Club, his synagogue, and the Jewish community.
It will be presented at the FJMC convention in Miami, Florida in 2015. I ask you all to please follow
Sandy’s lead. Get involved and engage in our synagogue community. The first step is easy, sign up and
join Men’s Club.

SHIVA MINYAN LEADER AND ASSISTANT CERTIFICATION
MEN ILLUMINATING THE WAY - LEADING A SHIVA MINYAN
A Midwest Region FJMC and the Cantors Assembly Program
This program is a short course leading to certification as a Shiva Minyan Leader, or
for those that are not Hebrew fluent, a Shiva Minyan Assistant.
There is a gap in our community:
• A shortage of men as Minyan Leaders exists.
• A certification program does not exist.
• Men who are not fluent in Hebrew have a reluctance to participate in assisting
at a Shiva Minyan.
As innovators, Midwest Region FJMC and its member Clubs can fill this gap. This
will be a pilot program that can spread to other FJMC Regions.

According to a recent study, over 90% of
children are aware of domestic abuse in their
home. These children are affected emotionally,
cognitively, and physically. They are at great risk
and often experience low self-esteem, shame,
fear and guilt. Many distrust adults, fail to thrive
or suffer from depression and anxiety.
What can we do? The issue of domestic abuse is
not just a women’s issue; it affects the entire
family as well as our Jewish community.
SHALVA offers free counseling to Jewish
women who are or were in an intimate partner
