Please call the office, 641-3600 How often I hear the phrase, "I am spiritual, but not religious." I must confess that I have never understood the meaning of this quote. What is spirituality, if not religion, and what is religion, if not the quest for spirituality? It is sometimes suggested that Judaism is a . religion oflaw, that its dramatic mitzvah system presents a behaviorist view of the world. Judaism's preeminent value ofTikkun Olam clearly advocates a partnership with human beings and God, and advocates our responsibility to complete the process of creation. However, to imply that our activism in the physical world means that we have no interest in the world of the spirit is completely without warrant. Our tradition is replete with powerful and meaningful attempts to connect with God. Jewish mysticism expressed in the many works of Kabbalah, began in the first century of the Common Era, and continues until this day. There have been periods when a more rational approach held sway, but there have been and continue to be wide swaths of the Jewish world that express their Jewish life through the spiritual. It is important to note that even those who engage in most mystical aspects of spiritual life have never abandoned the Mitzvot or the noble goal to repair the world. Indeed, mystical tradition has reinforced the performance ofMitzvot with the inclusion of a cosmic importance. Not only do we see a personal and global impact from our behavior, but there might also be an unseen, unknown, yet very real, cascading effect to Jewish ritual. What I do matters, not only to my immediate neighbors, and me, but it effects the cosmos in untold ways. Therefore, spiritual Jews perform even the most mundane Mitzvot with great fervor. Though I may not recognize or realize the impact of this behavior, it does not mean that there isn't some effect. In truth, the mystical tradition is profoundly behaviorist, because it acknowledges the power inherent in actions even when they are not readily visible. Thus, truly spiritual people do not dwell only in the world of the self, but rely on the self to effect creation and climb the physical world's ladder toward the divine. Our religious tradition places responsibility on each of us not merely to feel good and obtain inner peace, but to bring the world closer to heavenly perfection. As we approach Rosh Chodesh Elul, the month before the Holy Days, it is our tradition to sound the shofar daily. It calls us, awakens us, and invokes us, not merely to attend High Holiday services, but also and more importantly to accept the spiritual imperative to elevate our souls toward the divine within and without, and accept our ancient call to repair our world. As the Holy Days of Awe draw near, let us examine our hearts and souls, and recommit ourselves to being God's partners in spirit and deed. Susan, I and our family wish you and yours a Shana Tova Umetukah, a sweet and good New Year, filled with the pleasant peace of spiritual joy and imbued with the fulfillment that comes from doing God's work. TIDiNG.I ~ ,.IY This past summer was a very special one for me. You aU know about the most important event that occurred for Dmitri and me - the birth of our son Michael Gideon (MotI Moshe) may he live 120 years, I was thrilled that our congregants welcomed him into the world with open arms and I am immensely grateful to you for sharing our happiness and for all the love and support you showed us in so many ways, Summertime, when Hebrew school is on vacation and most children are away, is the best time for study, professional development and sharing experience with other cantors. Though getting used to the huge change in my life and this new overwhelming responsibility that little Motele brought into my life, I was able to attend only one seminar on Jewish music this summer that proved a profound experience for me. I spent four days in the Catskills studying with my most distinguished colleagues at the first annual Rozhinke retreat. Rozhinke is a new seminar organized in an effort to preserve and continue the great cantorial art tradition of yesteryear. The music that we hear in the synagogue today is various and eclectic, derived from different times and traditions, and changing from place to place according to the taste and average age of the ~~~~~~~~~~~ congregants. But when one thinks of hazzanut, as an art form, the particular style that has its roots in the eastern European shtetl comes to mind. Yossele Rosenblatt, the Kousevitsky brothers and other renowned cantors of the first half of the twentieth century, a period now and we CVte mod called "The Golden Age of ~ ,,~fn /"/ Cantors ," possessed special 'f'~. authentic sound and ethnically 1,;;;;;==;;;;e.;;;;~==;;;;.e=Q.IUd,a='=~ Jewish delivery. Their davening was so intrinsically Jewish, so passionate, so filled with pathos and sweetness, that it is described by the term "Rozhinke" (a raisin). We admire the cantors of the Golden Age not just for the beauty of their voices and amazing vocal technique, but for being real zoggers (speakers) who prayed with kavanah (understanding), expressing longings and aspirations of a human soul and conveying a liturgical message to their listeners. It was both challenge and fun to spend four days working on all those little krechtz and kveck sounds, polishing dreydelach and runs that, unfortunately, are very rarely heard on the bimah nowadays. Should this part of our heritage be left only to a concert stage where it becomes the showcase ofthe cantor's voice, or can it be a part of the worship service and awaken the same spiritual and emotional response that it did from our parents and grandparents? I strongly believe that it can. This year which is the Year of the Siddur in our congregation, I would like to dedicate the sermons in song to the renditions ofliturgy from different times and styles, and to see which of them would resonate with us so that we might incorporate them into the service. I look forward to sharing more wonderful music with you and your thoughtful insights that always enhance my interpretation ofthe words of the prayers. ~~8't~ LAST CALL FOR BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE! I quote from SISTERHOOD DUES ARE STILL THE BEST BARGAIN the e-mail: "My son, a Marine lieutenant, called last Thursday from AI Hillah, Iraq! It was the third phone call since they deployed in January. The call was short due to the enormous cost and, therefore, rather a frantic check list - are you ok, how is your stomach feeling, do you have enough food? But he chose Thursday because it was his father 's tenth yahrzeit and he wanted to make the family connection that only a voice can do. It was wonderful for both of us to be "together." The Army son of the Rabbi's assistant at the reform shul in Atlanta was among the team that took Uday and Qusai. The generals came to congratulate them and then brought the news that their deployment would be extended to Marc~ '04. The generals asked what would make the months ahead tolerable. The answer was the ~.wIWr. ability to make phone calls home." As we approach the High Holy Days, let uS share our good fortune with those far from home and their loved ones. Please send your calling cards to the Temple office or have your child bring them on the first day of Sunday school. Sincerely, ~CJ~ TiDiNCt.l Bamishpachah (In the Family): ! . September 2003 ,'. TIDi G.I YOUTH GROUP NEWS NURSERY & RELIGIOUS SCHOOL This year Youth Group will see many changes that I am very excited about. Our 7th and 8th Grade Youth group is undergoing another transformation! It will now be known as the Mitzvah Corps. The Mitzvah Corps will give our children the chance to perform Mitzvoth (commandments) on a monthly basis. This will present a great opportunity for our youth to volunteer their services to organizations throughout our community. We will provide attention to the elderly, the homeless, adults in group homes, the homebound and many more. Among other things, we will be cooking, serving meals, planting flowers and playing bingo. Our senior Youth Group will continue to be known as BITY (Beth Israel Temple Youth). We have a new board in place and I encourage any students in high school who would like to be involved to contact me. Our 41h through 6th graders will now be known as Ity-Bity and will still feature the same fun-filled monthly activities. Though Youth Group is focused on our youth; the more important emphasis should be on parents. Without parental support we could not have successful events. Please encourage your child(ren) to not only become members of Youth Group, but to become active members. Youth Group gives our children the opportunity to grow into young adults and as Jews in an informal setting. In addition to our work in Tikkun Olam, repairing the world, we offer fun and exciting events that bring our kids together with our Jewish kids locally and throughout the region. So when the Youth Group registration arrives for your child, please fill it out, send it back to Beth Israel and stay involved. I heard a rumor that summer was here ... but I'm not really sure. I suppose there were some very hot days, but Mr. Sunshine rarely showed his face and my days at the beach were numbered. However, not one to complain, I'll just say 'thank you, God' for those Fridays off. They certainly felt great! September brings much excitement to our school building. Nursery school ran a very successful camp program this summer for our youngest children. It was great fun and a pure delight to watch all those bathing beauties in and out of our small pools. A warm thanks to Ms. Ina who really made it all happen. Our fall nursery programs are in place and there are still a few spots available. This year we have both a morning and afternoon kindergarten enrichment program. These classes are designed to reinforce kindergarten skills in an active leaming environment with a project approach curriculum. Thanks to Lisa Stein, our staB had the opportunity to learn about the Reggio Emila program of Italy. This approach allows children to construct their own learning in an open, flexible manner. Teachers are there to facilitate the process and guide their discoveries . . There are many new things happening in our Sunday and Hebrew School. We will continue to use the Chai curriculum in second, third, and now fourth grade. The Chai curriculum was designed by the UARC and focuses on Torah, Avodah and G'milut Chasadim. Each grade level studies a specific book of the Torah. We will continue to use the same Hebrew series for instruction but will individualize and supplement our studies with materials from the new Mitkadem program. This year there will be many scheduled Tefillah (worship) sessions both during the week and on Sundays. The Rabbi and Cantor put together a prayer book specifically to be used for our school Tefillah sessions. It is our goal to make our children as proficient and comfortable as possible with the worship service through ongoing programming. We are, after all, in the business of helping to educate the future generation of Jewish adults. We take this responsibility very seriously. As the year closes and we look toward a new year hopefully filled with peace for all, my family and I wish everyone a sweet New Year. Well, we're going to do it again! Cantor Averbakh has planned another Metropolitan Opera adventure on Saturday, Dec. 13, to see and hear "La Juive" (The Jewess) by famous 19 th century French composer, Jacques Halevy. This trip promises to be an exciting Shabbat experience. We will leave our Temple grounds at approximately 8 a.m., and head for Temple Beth EI in Jersey City where we will first enjoy a Shabbat service, followed by lunch at the synagogue. Then on to New York City and the opera which will feature Metropolitan star, Neil Shicoff, the son of a famous cantor, and Soile Isokoski, in the title roles. While enroute to New York, Cantor Averbakh will acquaint us with the opera's story. After the opera we will have dinner before proceeding home. If you are interested, please call our Temple office and reserve your place. The price has been estimated to be approximately $150 per person, which includes bus transportation, lunch, bus driver gratuity, opera ticket and dinner. The number to call is 641-3600.
