“Achieving the Master Breeder Award
fulfills one of my many goals in breeding
Modenas. Being deemed worthy of this
by your peers is an honor
I am proud to have achieved.”
~ Scott Brown, 2010
Scott and his father, Larry Brown, are both longtime NMC Members and pigeon enthusiasts. “This is the biggest award I’ve ever
received. You go about your business and it seems like nobody notices what you are doing, then you
get surprised by something like this!
I can’t even put into words just how
much this means to me.”
~ John Tiseo, 2010

you that had anything to do with
this. It has made me a very
happy and proud man. It is an
achievement of a lifetime and
very much appreciated.
Thank you all... .”

the other ones!
Members,
The NMC has begun an ambitious project to
archive all of the clubs past Yearbooks and Bulletins. This will be a digital archive with a goal
of preserving our documents and making them
available to our members and others via the club
web site.
Since I first began discussing this project, I’ve
learned that many others see this as a worthy
project and many of you have these documents
in your personal collections. The NMC is committed to this project, towards that end past
president, Ron Hawley has agreed to serve as the
NMC Historian.

"The breeding of Pigeons is generally accepted as a simple
hobby providing many hours of pleasurable relaxation at small
cost, but it also goes further than that, since we have fanciers
among us who take the hobby very seriously and they consider
their efforts something of a duty to mankind."

Master Breeders
The NMC and the Master Breeders said goodbye to two of our own last year. Virginia
DeLong and Russell Sapp will be missed by us and the entire pigeon hobby. They
made significant contributions to the NMC and will always be remembered as “Good
Modena Breeders and Good Friends” Rest in peace our friends!
The NMC Master Breeders
Rex Arnold
Rex has been a Master Breeder for many years and has been raising pigeons since 1959. He
was presented with his Master Breeder award by then NPA President W.B. Schroeder. His favorite color of Modena is the Bronze Gazzi and he kept to the his winning ways by capturing this
years National Best Modena with a Bronze Schietti. Rex is a multi-National Best Modena winner.
Rex makes his home in Oklahoma. Rex can be reached at his home in Checotah, OK # 918-463
-2660. Rex is shown above with and next to his National Best Modena from this past National
Show in Salt Lake City. Congratulations Rex!
224
Master Breeders
Bob Gathright
Bob makes his home in Azle, TX. He can be reached at 817-237-9569 or
bobgathright@charter.net. Bob received his award in 1983-1984, he’s
been an nmc member since 1966 and has raised pigeons his entire life
but got into the Modenas around 1966. His favorite color is Black Gazzi,
he currently raises Black, Blue, Bronze-Tri, Andalusian in Schietti & Gazzi
and White Schiettis.
Bob’s most memorable win at an NMC meet came on December 7th, 1968
at Bellevill Modena Show at the Madison County Exposition building in
Illinois. Bob Pettit was the judge and Bob won Best Modena with Black
Schietti Hen # 407, she earned 9 certificates.
Another memorable win is a Red Schietti that he let Rex Arnold have, this
bird wone 2 Nationals. One as a Hen and the year before as a
Cock…”That’s Hard to Top”
When asked to share some advice Bob says “If you continue to do what you have always done you will
conti9nue to get what you have always gotten. If you think 2nd place is good you won’t win very many
1st places” Bob encourages breeders to raise the colors that are competitive like Black & White Schiettis
and Blue, Bronze and Bronze-Tri Gazzi because these colors make up 2/3rds of every show.
Ed Loomis
Ed makes his home in Lincoln, NE and can be reached at # 402-423-5355, he’s
not an emailer so save Jacki some work and just pick up the phone if you want
to talk. Ed received his Master Breeder Award in 1985. He’s raised pigeons
since he was a boy and recently came across a photo from the Omaha World
Herald showing him at age 13 with his National Champion pigeons earned in
Lincoln. He raises mostly Schiettis in Black, White, Red, Bronze, Yellow and a
few other colors.
One of Ed’s most memorable wins was the 2003 National, this Black Hen was
Best Modena in 2003 and won 2 other Nationals as Best Black. She has been
seen in numerous images next to the NMC Standard and the outlines are almost exactly the same.
When asked to share breeding advice Ed says “Build a Family”. He sees too often where breeders introduce in genes from too many sources, he has more success breeding closer but this means you need to
start with the best Modenas you can find. And then you really have to “live with” them to keep them
happy, healthy and breeding strong. The more time you can spend in the loft the better off you’ll be.
Ed raises mostly Modenas but has a few West of Englands, Rollers, Pouters and some Homers for feeders.
Ed is a past 4th District Director and currently serves as the Chair of the Master Breeder Committee.
All of his pigeon friends are very special to him and some of the finest men he’s known he met through the
pigeons. He still misses Gene Springer and Doc Horn, two Master Breeders we lost in the last few years.
225
Master Breeders
Max Josey
Max calls Argyle, TX home and he can reached at # 940-464-3201, outlaw_56@yahoo.com. Max received his Master Breeder award in 2001 at
Oklahoma City with Ed Loomis making the presentation. Max says it was a
great honor to join the ranks of all the Master Breeders. He’s raised pigeons
since he was a boy and is a 25+ year NMC member.
When asked about some of his past birds Max says he thinks the best bird
he ever raised is Blue Schietti Cock # 748, he was the most balanced to the
NMC Standard. Max has been very successful and has many wins and certificates, he most remembers the 2004 Birmingham National where he had
Best Modena with a Mealy Gazzi OH # 728 and Best Schietti Blue OC # 20,
Reserve Gazzi with a Red Check OC # 28 and fReserve Schietti with Yellow
YC # 5 - wow!
Max shares this advice with his fellow members: When mating a pari make sure at least one is well balanced, what I mean is that it has good tight underline, legs straight and in the center of the body and that
it is round like the standard. Do not worry about large heads and power as you can add these to your
stud later.
Max says that the “Little Modena has enabled me to meet and enjoy many friends in the hobby especially
at the shows and several close friends that he visits with often.”
Jerry Mitosinka
Jerry makes his home in Lafayette, CA, he can be contacted at # 925-2837282 or by email at mitosinka@comcast.net. Jerry is currently serving as
the NMC President. He received his Master Breeder Award in 2008 at Lancaster, PA with Ed Loomis doing the presenting. Jerry says “being given
this award was the most significant event in my life with Modenas. Joining
the Master Breeder fraternity is very special to me.
Jerry’s most memorable win was his first in November 1999 at the Sixth
District Show in Fresno with a Black Schietti Cock.
Jerry has been a member of NMC for around 20 years and has raised pigeons for over 30 years. When asked to name his favorite color he says
“All colors are my favorite”!
In addition to his Modenas he also has Saddle Homers and Giant Runts.
Jerry shared that he has benefited from the advice and time a number of friends have shared with him.
“My sense of what makes a good, balanced Modena came from tutoring by Max Josey. Others who provided significant advise and support over the years include Rick Barker, Dennis Weyrauch, Bob Gathright,
Willi Richert, Ed Loomis, Scott Brown, Carl Ewert and Manfred Ecker. These breeders allowed me to visit,
shared birds and allowed me to interrupt them at shows and graciously responded to my questions.
When asked what advice he would share he says “The ability to recognize a good Modena is very importants. It allows you to evaluate your birds and plan your breeding program. Keep a positive attitude and
enjoy the hobby.

Master Breeders
Rick Barker
Rick makes his home in Temecula, CA. He received his Master Breeder
Award in 1991-1992, Jim Lairmore made the presentation to him. Rick says
that being acknowledged by your peers is very satisfying. Rick has been an
NMC member since 1963 or 64 making him an over 40 year member, he’s
had pigeons over 50 years.
Rick raises Black and Andalusian Gazzi, and White, Black and Andalusian
Schiettie. Considering the success Rick has had with his Black Gazzis it is no
surprise that he says that is his favorite color. Rick also raises Voorburg
Shield Croppers, Turbits, and Racing Homers which are now his primary focus.
Rick’s most memorable win came at the 1966 Costa Mesa Nationa. He tells the story of being a 16 year old who had
Black Gazzi. However, there were some Blacks that had quite a reputation in the showroom at the time. In the 1st
District Raffensberger’s cock 99 won many classes, Sam Peavey in KY was showing a cock 56 that was a winning bird.
Charles Stamps in NM or TX was showing a cock, 66 that was supposedly the best Black Gassi bred at the time. I
was very hesitant to show my birds. However, I did show three, an OC, OH & YC. With John Becker judging, I won
three firsts, BOC on the OC and BY. John Jensen and others could not believe that I bred those pigeons. Black
Gazzis 2719 bred in 1965 and 434 bred in 1990 are two birds that still stand out in Rick’s memory.
Rick says he has been blessed to meet so many great friends though the birds, Dennis Weyrauch has been a friend
and traveling companion since the 1970s and lately he and Willi have traveled to Europe together. He says the pigeon hobby has brought him life experiences that he would have missed greatly such as being in Nurnburg, Germany
three weeks after the fall of the Iron Curtain. Hearing first hand how difficult it was there for pigeon breeders.
His advice for the novice is to observe and listen, much can be gained that way. For all breeders he encourages you
to develop a program and stick with it. Rick concludes with “It is due to you the reader and those that have passed
in the NMC that have given me a rich and full life with our hobby.”
Norm Lofing
Norm makes his home in Sacramento, CA. He can be reached by phone
at # 914-446-3906. Norm received his NPA Master Breeder award in
1976 and his NMC Master Breeder award in 1986. He was presented
with his award in Fresno, CA.
Norm has been an NMC member since 1963 and has raised pigeons for
over 73 years. His favorite color of Modena is the Blue Gazzi.
Norm raises many colors at his loft including: Red Argents, Blue Argents, Blue Gazzi, Red Schietti, Yellow Schietti, Mags, Black Argents,
Bronze-Tri Gazzi and Russet-Tris.
In addition to his Modenas he has also raised Kings, Lahores, Show Flights, Norwich Croppers and Racing
Homers.
227
Master Breeders
Brad Wilcox
Brad makes his home in Princeton, IL and can be reached at # 815-8751469, rbwilcox58@yahoo.com. He received his Master Breeder Award in
2000 at the Milwaukee National with Ed Loomis making the presentation.
He says “It showed me that my fellow breeders recognized my breeding
abilities to continually breed and maintain a competitive family of Modenas.”
Brad has been an NMC member since 1979 and has raised pigeons for over
50 years. His favorite color is Yellow Schietti and he currently has Black,
Red, White, Magnani and Patterned birds. When asked about his most
memorable win he tells of a Young Red Hen “Rocky” he raised in 1989.
She was a special bird who will still measure up today. At the time she dealt fits to Ed Loomis & Bob Gathright,
coming out on top when they judged. Bob still has a picture of her today!
Brad was fortunate to grow up living only an hour away from Gene Springer and Bob Pettit and he considers
them both his mentors in life and the hobby. Brad encourages breeders not to let the judging results determine your breeding progam.
Brad says “Had I never gotten interested in Modenas, I would have missed out on so many good friends.”
Stewart Webster
Stew lives in Green Lane, PA and can be reached at @ 215-257-5999, relletz174@aol.com. He received his NPA Master Breeders award in 1974 and NMC in
1986. Stew still remembers the surprise he got when he received his NPA award.
Carl Ewert, Bob Weyrauch and Rick Baker were at his table when his name was
called. Wayne Rife presented the award. At the head table that night were John
Jensen and Russ Sapp.
He has been in the hobby for over 57 years as a NPA, NMC and Philadelphia Pigeon Fanciers Club member. John Jensen required him to join the clubs before he
would sell him any birds, he then rewarded him with his stud of Black Gazzis
(Stew’s favorites) at no charge. A win that still stands out for Stew was winning Best Modena, Best Gazzi and
Best Schietti at the 1st District show in York, PA. Last year he was presented with an award at Sturbridge to
honor his 54+ years in the hobby!
An important bird in his loft was White Hen # 42 bred from the Ober line, she was ahead of her time, practically
unbeatable. His advice to others is to show your birds at District Meets, Purchase the best birds you can afford
from a reputable breeder, this will save you years of time and disappointment. Take advantage of the breeding
talents of the breeders who have a proven stud of birds and are winning. Don’t hesitate to cross colors. This
has proved to be advantageous over the years for Stew.
See the article about Stew on an earlier page, you’ll enjoy reading more about him and his Pigeon Hobby!

Master Breeders
David Jackson
Dave makes his home in Keyser, WV, phone # 304-788-4781,
bmdpd@localnet.com. He’s a member of several pigeon clubs including: NMC,
NPA, MDMC, AMC, ASMC, LMC, IMC and has been in the hobby for 30+ years.
He’s bred Modenas since 1975 and is a past Eastern V.P. and 2nd District Director. Dave has served the clubs in many ways including the following his current
position as Secr/Treas of MDMC.
Dave received his Master Breeder Award from Ed Loomis at the 2003 Hartford,
CN National. He remembers it as very special, a great honor and achievement
and he was very excited. Dave raises several colors: Blue, Bronze-Tri, Red
Check, Mealy, Brown family, Dilutes in Gazzi and Schietti, Red, Yellow, Black and
Bronze. If forced to pick a favorite he selects Yellow.
He tells of two special birds to him, a Yellow Check Gazzi Hen # 355 who was the foundation to all his pattern
birds and of course his National Best Modena from the Detroit show.
Paul Ober and Ed Loomis are two breeders who have influenced Dave through the years. He would share this
advice - Breed a family of birds and breed the best to the best that have different faults and good traits.
Dave would like to encourage other breeders to go to the shows, support the clubs and enjoy your birds no
matter what!
Scott Brown
Scott makes his home in Stokedale, NC, # 336-644-0545, sabpvf@aol.com or
visit his web site www.freewebs.com/sabpve/index.htm
Scott received his Master Breeder Award at the Salt Lake City National from
Ed Loomis, Scott was on hand to adjudicate the Gazzi classes too. He’s been
an NMC member since 1974 when he started raising pigeons.
Scott raises Schiettis and Gazzis in the following colors: Black, White, Red,
Bronze, Bronze-Tri, Blue, Red Check, Andalusian, Mealy, Cream, Bronze Indigo and Yellow Check.
One of his more memorable wins came at the 2009 National with his Best Schietti win, and important bird to
Scott is his 2002 Red Check Gazzi Cock. In addition to the mentoring from his father Larry also a long time
NMC Member, Scott counts Willi Richert, Max Josey and Bob Gathright among those men who have helped and
influenced him.
Scott shares this wisdom with members - Have a goal or goals in mind and be committed to the work it will
take to be successful. Like anything you do you get out of it what you put in it.
Scott thanks his Dad Larry for introducing him to this great hobby and wants to thak him for all the time,
money and effort he put into the hobby for him. Scott says “The times we have shared together in the hobby
are priceless.”
