Apply at petal fall and repeat at 14-day intervals. Alternatively monitor insect populations as per IFP guidelines and apply ‘Avaunt’ 30Wg when thresholds are exceeded. Do not apply more than four applications in any one season.
Apply at 80% capfall, with a second application if required, up to pre-bunch closure. Allow a minimum interval of 14 days between applications. Use a non-ionic surfactant/wetter at the recommended rate. Ensure thorough spray coverage.
Apply a maximum of two sprays per season.

What is
DuPont
Avaunt 30WG?
The graph shows the average results of 12 trials over 5 years on leafroller and
codling moth control in apple and pear crops in New Zealand.
USE IN APPLE AND PEAR
PRODUCTION
™
Avaunt® is a very specific and selective insecticide
that is ideal for use in Integrated Pest Management
systems. It has minimal effect on bees (once the spray
has dried), earthworms, beneficial insects and non target
organisms that are necessary for implementation of good
Integrated Pest Management practices. As Avaunt® breaks
down rapidly and poses minimal risk to aquatic life birds
and mammals it has a favourable environmental profile.
Avaunt® is included in the IFP programme.

USE IN GRAPE PRODUCTION
Avaunt® insecticide has a novel mode of action. It is
very effective on target pests and has minimal effect on
beneficial insects and predators.
Larvae
Codling Larvae Adult
Avaunt® has been approved by Sustainable Wine Growing (SWG)
for leafroller control in grapes, can be used from 80% capfall to
pre-bunch closure and has a 65 day withholding period for export
wine production. Studies have shown that Avaunt® binds strongly
to the oils in the grape skin, and has no impact
on the vinification process for both red and white varieties.
Codling Larvae Damage
TOXICOLOGY & PROTECTIVE CLOTHING
Avaunt® is of moderate toxicity. In New Zealand it is classed as poison.
Recommendations for protective clothing are cotton or disposable overalls, waterproof
gloves and protective footwear.
Face, eye and respiratory protection are recommended if risk of contact with spray mist
is likely. Contact re entry period is when spray deposit is fully dry.
HOW DOES AVAUNT WORK?
The active ingredient of Avaunt® is indoxacarb from the oxadiazine family of products.
Avaunt® has a unique mode of action compared to existing chemicals and acts by blocking
the sodium pathway within the insect’s nervous system. It acts primarily as a stomach
poison but is also taken up by the insect through direct application and by contact with
treated plant surfaces. Avaunt® can be described as a pro-insecticide, which means it
does not become effective until it is activated inside the gut of the insect. This reduces
mammalian toxicity and detrimental effects on non-target organisms. Avaunt® also has
some ovi-larvicidal activity (by neonates ingesting chemical from the egg case at hatching)
and ovicidal activity on some insect species (such as codling moth).
RAINFASTNESS
Xanthopimpla
SPEED OF KNOCK
DOWN
Avaunt® is very effective on the larval stage of most Lepidoptera
species. Trials around the world and New Zealand have shown
CROP SAFETY
excellent control of target species.
Avaunt® is a dry flowable formulation that is very safe to crops. There have been no
adverse effects from its use on all the main varieties of
apples,
pears and grapes in trials conducted throughout New
EFFECTS ON BENEFICIALS & INSECT
PARASITOIDS
Trigonospilla
Larvae stop feeding within 0 - 4
hours after ingestion providing
immediate crop protection. Death
usually occurs within 2 - 3 days.
Depending on crop and particular
pest species and prevailing
climatic conditions, residual crop
protection will be maintained
from 7 - 14 days.
ACTIVITY
Many studies, both internationally and in New Zealand, have
confirmed Avaunt® has minimal effect on many of the beneficial
species that are present in apple and pear crops. To the side
Predatory Mite T.pyri
are some examples of beneficial insects and parasitoids.
USE IN RESISTANCE MANAGEMENT
Schellemburgs
Avaunt® is highly active on insects resistant to organophosphate
or synthetic pyrethroids and international studies have shown
no cross-resistance to other insecticides.
Avaunt® has a unique mode of action and it is an ideal product
to be used in a resistance management programme.
Aphaelinus Mali
Avaunt® is very rainfast once fully dried on the plant and is generally deemed to resist
rain wash 2 hours after application. It binds strongly to the plant surface which makes it
very resistant to being washed off by rain. Avaunt® is not systemic but can demonstrate
some local translaminar activity through the leaf.
By using chemicals with different modes of action within a
season, according to local resistance management strategies,
the effectiveness and longevity of valuable products can
be maintained.
Zealand.
COMPATIBILITY
In trial work Avaunt® has been tested
in mixtures with commonly used mixing
partners on apples, pears and grapes at the
recommended timing. To date there has been
no incompatibility observed. However, where
uncommon mixtures are being
applied compatibility tests prior to use
are recommended.
