Technical Sheet Château Fourcas Hosten White 2014
A lovely country manor house on 3 hectares of magnificent grounds beside a Romanesque church, Château Fourcas Hosten is located in the heart of Listrac-Médoc, a peaceful village that gave its name to the appellation. In 1810, Monsieur Hosten sold the estate to the de Saint-Affrique family, who created Château Fourcas Hosten and gave it an international reputation. The brothers Renaud and Laurent Momméja acquired the château during the 2006 vintage and were determined to breathe new life into this beautiful two hundred year old estate: “We fell in love with this wonderful property and its fine wine, and wanted to write a new page of our family’s history - one including Château Fourcas Hosten”. It is in this spirit that they undertook an ambitious renovation project and major restructuring of the vineyard. At the heart of this new project, our first white grape varieties were planted in 2012. These vines are worked with respect of the organic vine growing. We had frost only 8 times. Spring was characterized by high temperatures (20 to 21°C between the 7th and the 17th of March), but offset by fresh temperatures at night. Thus budburst only began around mid-March while remaining two weeks ahead of the usual cycle. April was very dry. In June, blooming got off to a great start, filling us with optimism for the future. From July, the Veraison seemed more disorganized: it started early and ended late, with changes of colors until after midAugust. Summer was really disappointing. Fortunately the weather became very nice from the 29th of August. Thanks to this wonderful weather conditions we were able to harvest at the appropriate pace. We could wait until the perfect level of maturity. Avoiding any pumping at any time of the whole winemaking process, this first vintage comes from young vines planted on a 2-hectares clay & limestone soil. Hand-harvesting in small crates, vertical press with thoughtfulness, and ageing on fine lees with stirring make this a great wine.
