The Hand Grenade Portfolio
(Education and Change)
It says something that the Education ministry has
been dubbed "The Hand Grenade" portfolio. It can
blow up at anytime with the right trigger!
And recently was no exception with the proposed
budgeted changes of:
(a)
increased class sizes
(b)
removal of specialist teachers from the
intermediate sector
(c)
a shift in thinking about a quantity of
teachers to quality of performance
(d)
higher entry qualifications for teacher training
(e)
a country that needs to save money!
There was a massive explosion and unfortunately
as often happens,the collateral damage is always
worse!
Some comment about these changes, bearing
in mind that for real change in Education to be
successful, negotiation is the key!
1. The need for a country to curtail spending,
save money, move to sustainable levels of tax
payer funded employees etc is evident and "a
given"for a country that needs to balance it's
budget. A change well signposted!
2. The increase in class sizes from 1:23 to 1:27
from years 9 and 10 can be understood with
a decrease in the formula for higher forms.
Remember 10 unruly students is 9 too many!
The class size debate is complex as teaching
and tutoring have different skills. But it was a
change well signposted and predicted.

This is a misplaced and quite frankly a ridiculous
proposal.Trying to do something with nothing is
difficult!
It goes counter to the rhetoric of equipping future
generations with a sound science and technological

and music are not really part of an education for NZ
students. Foggy thinking!
Change and Education are not good bedfellows!
From St Peters college point of view,I will write to the
minister of education pointing out our concerns and
giving her solutions born of sound experience! I will
also remind her that a good education has a solid
foundation in science, technology, music, art as well
as maths, english, humanities, physical education
and religious studies. I will offer her support in
implementing Nos 1-4 above. No 5 needs to be
rethought!

3. Teacher quantity vs teacher quality. This issue
has been highlighted with both major political
parties agreeing about the need for some form
of performance recognition for good teachers.
In my view long overdue and given the right
structures/incentives will work well. Teaching will
again become a highly sort after employment
industry!
4. Higher entry levels for teacher training! This
means NZ simply joins the rest of the world in
the selection of teachers.
5. Removal of specialist teachers in technology,
music, art etc (or in St Peters College context

you been involved in during
your time at SPC?
Next week at St Peter’s day we
will be inducting more boys
into the prefect team. Are you
looking forward to this?
I have been a member of
the Special Character group,
academic portfolio and scholars
academy. Last year I was Deputy
House Leader of Nolan and I
am in the 1st XI cricket side and
senior squash team.
What is your role in the
leadership team?
Angus as a member of our
leadership team tell us what
your leadership qualities are?
Well I believe I communicate well
and have a good understanding
of people. I think I have the ability
to take action and not just talk a
good game.

I am responsible for the Sports
portfolio. I manage the code
captains and make sure they
promote sports in the school.
I also helped to organise the
opening of the Cage a few
weeks back.

Yes definitely. It will be good to
have fresh ideas and will allow us
to expand our roles.
What are your plans after SPC?
I would like to be a Crown
Prosecutor so I intend to study
Law and Arts at Auckland
University next year.

50 Year Reunion - S.P.C. 1962 1st XV
Rugby Team
On the 12th of May this year (50 years after the S.P.C. 1st XV first beat Auckland Grammar….3 –
0) the 1962 team held a reunion lunch to celebrate and reminisce on those good times. Contact
was made with 22 of the 23 players involved in that winning team. Unfortunately one member (Joe
Parkinson) passed away in 2004. Tony Milich made a fitting tribute to Joe at the luncheon and
Joe’s son (Matt) was also present. Three members of the team (who now live in Australia) made
the trip over for the occasion. Kerry Salter (who lives in Canada) was unable to attend due to a
knee operation only a few days before the event. Brother Graeme Donaldson (the coach) also
came up from Dunedin to celebrate with his former team.
Other old boys were also present at the luncheon making the occasion very enjoyable.
As part of the celebration it was decided to donate a trophy, The Henry Cooper – Brother Paddy
Ryan Challenge Cup. To be played for annually between the two schools.
Unfortunately S.P.C. was not the first name engraved onto the cup, but there will be another time.

James Bentley - Pastoral
Introducing Fred Ponifasio, Deputy Head
Boy and Head of Special Character
Fred, tell us about your role in
the student leadership team.
My role is to support Junior,
our Head Boy and to build the
brotherhood of the school. In
leading the Special Character
group I help organise masses,
retreats, and reflections. I also
try and develop the younger
members of the group into future
leaders of Special Character.
What are your goals as Special
Character leader?
I want to change the perception
of the Special Character group.
It is for all boys not just full on
Catholics. The group is open to all
boys with similar values and it is a
great experience.
What does it mean for you to be
a catholic?
I try and live my life by practicing
the values of the Catholic church.
Going to church is only one part
of being a Catholic. After all there
are 6 other days of the week. I
try to be patient and humble and
also be caring to others. I take an
interest in everyone and exclude
no one.
What other parts of the College
are you involved in?
I am in the Samoan Group, Choir,
Edmund Rice and Young Vinnies
group. Last year I had a role in
‘Ragtime’ and this year I am also
part of Les Miserable’.
How do you keep balance in
your life?
Its tough but I have developed the
confidence to say no to things.
Mr Fricker (Year 13 Dean) has
encouraged me to delegate to
other members of the Special
Character group and Prefect
team. He has taught me to realise
that my delegation I am actually
empowering others. I also make

like the Sam Hunt Poetry & Prose
competition. We also hoping to
get a new competition off the
ground shortly – a Science and
Innovation challenge.
Nick, as one of our top
scholars is it true that you got
100% in an AS exam last year?
Umm.. (shyly – long pause).. that
is true it was in AS Accounting.
That’s quite an achievement,
how did you manage that?
Nick what’s your role in the
leadership team?
I lead the Academic portfolio.

sure I always have time for my
study – every night I make sure
I do at least 1 ½ hours of school
work.

I am in the Special Character
group and I play soccer for the
2ndXI. I also captain the mighty
4thX1 Cricket side. I am also in
one of our College rock bands
“Je Suis Oui”. Incidentally come
and support us on 9th June at the
Mercury Theatre in the Auckland
Regional competition!
What are your plans for 2013?
Plenty of study and some great
help from my teacher Ms Howard
I intend to study a BCOM/BSC at
Auckland University. I still have no
real idea about what career I want
to go into.
Were you surprised to with
your perfect score?
What advice can you give our
younger students?
Honestly I was. I was hoping to
get in the early 80s but when
it came through I was really
shocked.
Make the most of your time at
SPC. Get involved in a bit of
everything, but always remember
that this is a school and
academics always comes first.

Interview with Nathanael Hailemariam – Deputy Head Boy
What areas of the College are
you involved in?
I am part of the Special Character
group and sports portfolio. I am
also the captain of football for the
entire college and 1st XI captain.
You are known as a bit of
a football star here at the
College. Can you see yourself
progressing any further?
I would love to. Next year I
am hoping to gain a Football
scholarship to a United States
University. However, I am not
naïve, I know I need a backup
plan. So at University I plan to
study architecture.
What is your area of
responsibility?
I am in charge of the leadership
portfolio and Peer support.
Can you tell us a little bit about
your background?
What type of leader are you?
I am not a big talker. I prefer to
lead by example and interact with
different types of people.
What has SPC taught you?
To apply the values you learn here
to everyday life such as respect
and service. It has also taught me
to be the best I can possibly be in
everything I do.
Do you have any tips for or
younger students who aspire to
follow in your footsteps?
Be yourself. Don’t go looking
for leadership, if you are good
enough it will find you.
Who is your role model in life?
I have two. Firstly my mother. She
has always put us kids before
herself. The other is David Brown
(fellow 1stXI teammate). David’s
maturity and wise words are an
inspiration to me.
My parents are Ethiopian
but I was born in Sudan. We
emigrated to New Zealand when I
was 2 years old.

The St. Peter’s Man is a Man of Faith
St Peter's Day 2012
On Friday June 15th we celebrated St Peter’s Day at
the Cathedral of St Patrick and St Joseph. Student
ownership of the mass was evident in all aspects of
the liturgy: from the heart-felt singing, to the respect
and reverence for the sacredness of the mass and
the cathedral, to the beauty of the music from the
student musicians and the choir, the students of
SPC made St Peter’s Day 2012 a day to remember.
Special thanks to Mr. Poljanich and the music
department for the wonderful music, and to the
International Portfolio and the Kapa Haka group for
the welcome to the gospel.

The St. Peter’s Man is a Man of Faith
Blessing of Outhwaite Grave
In the early 1900s Isa Outhwaite
bequeathed the land that St
Peter’s stands upon to the Bishop
of Auckland for the purpose of
Catholic education for boys.
Isa, a noted artist, was from a
prominent French family of early
settlers to Aotearoa. In recent
times the Outhwaite Family
grave has been resorted at its
location in Waikaraka Cemetery
in Onehunga. A blessing for
the restored grave was held on
Wednesday May 2nd.
Education in the Edmund Rice
Tradition as a result of the
Outhwaite’s gift, with many
thousands still to come!
The generosity of the Outhwaite
family is a reminder of the longterm consequences of lives
committed to love and service.
The Kapa Haka Group, along with
two representatives of each year
level, attended the blessing.

Edmund Rice Portfolio
The Edmund Rice Portfolio
has been committed to actively
participating in the Pillars
mentoring programme in 2012.
Following the successful start
to the programme during the
second half of 2011, the group
has been growing in number and
in confidence.
The programme gives St Peter’s
College students a chance to
support and mentor primary
aged children at Rongomai
Primary in Otara who have had
a parent/relative incarcerated.
The programme involves reading,
sports and challenging activities.
The sessions run every Monday
for an hour and a half.
There has been tremendous
support from the current Year
12 students who are very
enthusiastic. A number of more
‘senior’ members who began
the programme last year are
continuing to partake in 2012.

Air NZ Aircraft
Engineering
Ten students from Year 13
students visited the Engineering
division of Air New Zealand
in week 1 of Term 2. Gerard
Robertson, an Engineer at Air
New Zealand talked with students
about his career and opportunities
in this area of work, and a recent
graduate discussed the transition
from University to the work
situation.
Students had the privilege of
going inside aircraft and visited
the machine room where they
learnt about the Engineering
process when repairing different
parts of the plane. This trip
provided an excellent insight
into career pathways within this
industry.

Bank Link
A group of Year 13 students
visited Bank Link in Mt Eden
recently. Bank Link is a NZ
company which produces a range
of solutions that help accountants
work more effectively with
their clients by providing them
with electronic copies of bank
transactions.
Daniel Carpenter, an Old Boy
from St Peter’s College, talked
to the students about his career
and how his opportunity to work
at Bank Link developed. He
talked about his role as Executive
Manager of Product at Bank Link
and discussed other types of jobs
within the company. Students
had a tour of the office, and the
chance to ask lots of questions
about this area of work.

An annual college raffle is
held as part of our fundraising
efforts.
We are looking for some major
prizes for the 2012 raffle.

Workchoice Day
2012
On 15 May, a group of 20 Year
12 and 13 students had the
opportunity to visit Manukau
District Law Court for the morning.
Students observed live cases in
the Law court.
One of the Judges spoke to
students about his career and
how he makes decisions.
Students also heard from Court
security, went to look at the cells
underneath the Law court and
had the chance to go inside the
security escort vehicles which
transport offenders from prisons
to the law courts.
This was a great opportunity for
students who are considering
careers in law, police and security.
A further group of 20 students
visited two Engineering
companies. At Babbage
Consultants, students spent the
Workchoice Engineering Trip to Babbage Consultants
morning in a luxurious board
room.
earthquake provided interest for
students.
First up was a talk on electrical
engineering where students learnt
that this engineering specialty has
a mantra - “no one notices if it’s
working, everyone notices if it’s
not.” Quizzes about sustainable
building materials with handson examples and geo-technical
dilemmas from the Christchurch
The afternoon was spent closer
to home at Tonkin and Taylor in
Carlton Gore Road. Along with
an engineering words bingo,
students were shown a practical
demonstration of how liquefaction
occurs in unstable ground and
visited staff workstations to see
first- hand how engineers spend

During the second week of
the holidays the St Peter’s
College senior water polo team
participated in the New Zealand
Secondary Schools Waterpolo
Division 2 Championships.
The team secured 5th place at
Nationals. This is the team’s best
ever result at this competition.
With all the team returning in
2013 the team will continue to
go from strength to strength.

Zac has been selected to
represent New Zealand
cycling at the UCI Junior Track
World Championships which
will be held in Invercargill
from the 22nd August to 26th
August.

Zac Williams selected for the World U19 Track Cycling
Championships
Zac will be part of a 16 strong
squad representing New Zealand
in the World U19 Track Cycling
Championships in August.
This event will be extra special for
Zac and the team as it is being
held in New Zealand for the first
time. Invercargill are hosting the
event on a track that is reputed to
be one of the fastest in the world.
Zac who is the second youngest
member of the team and one of
only two male sprinters will be
competing in the Individual Match
Sprint, Kilo Time Trial and Team
Sprint. Zac’s goals for the event
include breaking the New Zealand
U19 match sprint, 200m record.
1.03sec and for the Team Sprint
the goal is to medal.
Zac’s trains six days a week twice
a day. This includes 3 – 4 gym
sessions and a number of erg
sessions. The heavy loading now
will help him ride the biggest gear
possible at the World Champs.
In July Zac is spending three
weeks in Australia as part of the
build up. In the month leading up
to the event he will be based in
Invercargill.
We look forward to following
Zac’s progress and wish him well
in his preparations for the World
Championships.
This currently stands at 10.5sec’s.

Series Tournament being held in
Taichung, Taiwan in July of 2012.
There will be 12 International
teams competing for a position
at the World Championship in
Williamsport, Pennsylvania in the
United States in August.

Bryn Hall (2010) – Selected as
co-captain of the New Zealand
U20 Rugby Team. He is travelling
to South Africa in June to compete
in the Junior World Cup.
Lewis Hollows (2010) &
Stephen Jones (2010) – Have
been selected to represent NZ
U21 Rowing Team. They will be
representing New Zealand in in
three regattas over the next eight
months. Both will race in a Single,
Double, Quad and the Coxed
Eight.

Fuji Xerox Cage hosts a
1st XV thriller
St Peter’s College hosted its
first game of the season on the
3G Artificial Turf against De La
Salle. The game was a great
advertisement for the all-weather
surface with a fast paced, free
flowing encounter enjoyed by a
large crowd.
De La Salle opened their account
early when they made the most
of an opportunity presented to
them by a St Peter’s mistake.
The 1st XV struck back almost
immediately with a slick back line
moved providing winger, Shem-

Kalvin Tatupu, space to score in
the corner.
De La Salle was very good at
turning pressure into points. As a
result mid-way through the second
half they had stretched the lead
out to 29 – 14.
St Peter’s forwards led by
Samiuele Folau and Easton
Malietoa-Brown begin to
dominant proceedings providing
the backs with some front foot.
Fullback Nu’u Nu’u scored a
much needed try after a sustained
period of attack. Shem-Kalvin
Tatupu crossed the line again
shortly after. With both tries being
converted by Nu’u Nu’u the game
was wide open with eight minutes

remaining. Unfortunately the 1st
XV were unable to convert a
couple of late opportunities. Final
score, 29-28 to De La Salle.
Dion Fraser on debut had a fine
game in the 10 jersey and was
awarded the Player of the Day.
Shem-Kalvin Tatupu had some
brilliant touches. Captain, Paihere
Tims, was in the thick of the
action for the duration.

Central Zone
Cross-Country
A team of 18 students
represented St Peter’s at the
Central Zone Cross-country
at Lloyd Elsmore Park in
Pakuranga. The course was fast
and challenging with several
steeplechase and stream jumps.
Aleks Dabek ran strongly and
had a clean win in the Junior boys
race, while Sam Pendreigh had
a tactical race, finishing 2nd in the
Intermediate boys division.
Our teams also did well with
3rd places in the 3-person
Intermediate (Sam Pendreigh,
Eamon McArdle and Aidan
Vale) and Senior teams (Tom
Taylor, Kieran Meekan and
Daniel Menzies).

Isaac Simpson (Cycling Code Captain) - Placed third in the prestigious North Harbour 36 km Road race on
the weekend of the 20th of May.
Michael Fitzpatrick – Member of the all-star cheerleaders elite teams - Legends and Smart Mail Team New
Zealand. Awarded a silver medal at the World Cheerleading Championships held in Florida recently.

First XV outplay
Tamaki six tries to
one
The 1st XV scored six tries to
dispatch Tamaki 39 – 11 in a free
flowing encounter at the cage
on Saturday 23rd. The First’s
dominated proceedings from the
outset. However, it was not until
mid-way through the first half they
were able to convert pressure into
points. First five, Dion Fraser, was
the first to score. This was quickly
followed by tries to impressive
mid fielder, Vince Aso, and winger
Shem-KalvinTatupu. Tamaki
responded with two penalties to
narrow the half time score to
17 – 6. Shortly after half time
Tatupu scored the bonus point try.
A period of attack from Tamaki
was rewarded with a well taken
try to there first five. The 1st XV
back line enjoyed the quality front
foot ball provided by the forwards.
Further tries Aso and replacement
first five Jordon Trainor secured a
comprehensive win to the
St Peter’s.
Rick Wester had a fine all round
game. Hooker Romero Tagi was
impressive on debut. Vince Aso
made several breaks in the mid
field. Captain, PaihereTimms, was
awarded player of the day.

First XI Hockey team enjoying an
excellent season
The First XI has made their best
ever start to a season. They
kicked off the season with an
8 – 0 win over Onehunga.
They were deservedly awarded
SPC Team of the Week for this
performance. They backed this
up with a solid 4-1 win against
Sacred Heart College and then
3-0 win against Avondale College.
The team suffered their first
defeat of the season to Auckland
Grammar, losing 1 – 2.

Second year captain Sean Griffin
notes; "Improvements can clearly
be seen. Four years ago the
scores against the top teams
such as AGS were 12 nil and of
the like. We are very competitive
against all sides now. We are very
determined to secure the school’s
first ever win against Grammar
1st XI next round."
The team possesses a good mix
of youth and experience. Their
goal this year is to make the top
four in Auckland.
