St Peter’s College

Catholic School for Boys in the Edmund Rice Tradition
May 20th, 2011. Newsletter 9/11
Mrs Alice Hickey
(Lesson in Fidelity)
Last week we had a function to honour Mrs Hickey - a teacher for 51 years (1960-2011) - 31 years
spent at St. Peter's College teaching Year 7. As per our recent tradition, we presented her with a stain
glass window which is located in the Edmund Rice Library. She joins nine other long serving staff
members in recent years with a tenure of 20 years or more at St. Peter's College.
An extra-ordinary achievement with a powerful influence on approx 1000 St. Peter's College young
men. She has put the gold standard of fidelity to her class and the myriad tasks of teaching. Quite a
contrast in this nanosecond world!
What have these 1000 young men experienced in their first year at St. Peter's under Mrs Hickey over
31 years?
• They would have experienced a patient woman who never much raised her voice. Her quiet
manner led to a learning classroom being an engaged and settled classroom. (Noise Reduction
101 Boy's Learning)
• They would have experienced a thorough grounding in the basics of maths, reading, faith and
other subjects. (Basics 102 Boy's Learning)
• They would have experienced a woman who made contact with boy's parents, - registered
approval and disapproval of boy's actions. Engagement of families. (Family Support 103 Boy's
Learning)
• They would have experienced a woman who understood boys - know which way they would jump,
understood their need for physical activity, PED and structure. (Boy's Needs 104 Boy's Learning)
• They would have experienced a woman who told the story about St. Peter's College, told the faith
that inspired the story, told the history and tradition. (Belonging/Tradition 105 Boy's Learning)
• They would have experienced a woman with excellent handwriting, a constant reminders on
homework, about doing the right thing, bringing the right gear etc. (Time Management 106 Boy's
Learning)
In telling the influence of Mrs Hickey on 1000's of Old Boys we tell of the influence that individual
teachers bring to the table daily. This vocation is not for the faint of heart, the sluggard or the
intellectually inept.
The worth of the teacher transcends the generations, creates or destroys opportunities for the
student in their care. As such, this noble profession is worthy of respect simply because teaching is
a profession of respect.
St. Peter's College salutes Mrs Alice Hickey in her 31 years on the front line. May her retirement be a
worthy and creative next journey.

Special Character News
The St Peter’s Man is a Man of Faith
Year 9 Retreats 2011
This week Year 9 classes have been going on a oneday retreat at the Franciscan Friary in Hillsborough.
St Peter’s College students have been going to the
Friary since our school opened in 1939. The Year
9 Retreat is being run by LOGOS. LOGOS is a
Youth Development organisation that runs under
the Marist banner. LOGOS have been active at St
Peter’s since 2003. Year 9 students on this year’s
retreat will have the opportunity to discuss and look
into the following themes:
•
•
To become aware of my dignity, and therefore
the dignity of others and of God’s presence in
all of us
To have a deeper sense of God’s spirit in my
life
The opportunity to reflect upon God’s presence in
our lives and in the lives of others is a central focus
of the Special Character of St Peter’s College. In
taking part in the Year 9 retreats, it is hoped that
students will benefit from some space away from
daily school life in order to contemplate some of the
deeper issues of life and faith.
Service Programmes

Gateway
House Competition
St Peter’s is proud of its reputation for educating
the whole boy. Our goal is for our boys to leave
St Peter’s having fulfilled their potential and with a
strong values base embedded into their character.
Boys should also have clear goals for their next
step into the wider world.
The House Competition is back into the swing of
things after a hiatus over the holidays. Mr Finnigan’s
programme sees houses taking each other on
in a variety of activities which include debating,
basketball and ready steady cook. Treacy leaders
Brandon Fonoimoana 13TRE and Anthony
Casey 12TRE have some work to do if they want
to avoid the wooden spoon in 2011
Gateway coordinator Mr Boyle is currently working
with 12 senior boys in providing them with work
experience in their chosen pathway. The boys
have been placed with employers for a day a week
in a variety of industries which include electrical,
building, IT, personal training and broadcasting.
Two boys enjoyed their experience so much that
they have accepted apprenticeships in electrical
engineering and gasfitting. Feedback from
employers to Mr Boyle of the SPC boys has been
overwhelmingly positive, with all impressed with
the boys attitude.
Mr Boyle is constantly on the look out for prospective
employers prepared to offer work experience to
SPC boys wanting to join Gateway. Mr Boyle can
be contacted at bboyle@st-peters.school.nz or
524-8108 x 7319.

Rugby Field Day vs Sacred Heart
Saturday is a massive day at Sacred Heart with 11
of our rugby teams playing there. All teams will be
looking forward to competitive matches. Players
are reminded to play hard but play fair at all times
and to win with humility and lose with dignity.
There are games throughout the day starting at
9.15am with four games and finishing with the 1st
XV at 2.30pm. It would be great to see parents,
supporters and players stay and support other
teams leading into the 1st XV game.
Soccer
by the Westlake Goal Keeper bringing down David
Browne in a one on one situation and resulted
in a red card. Nathaniel Hailemariam executed
an astonishing shot from a free kick to put St
Peters in the lead. Five minutes later Hailemariam
comfortably slotted his second goal to put St Peters
3 – 1 ahead.
The 1st XI were not prepared to relax with this
lead and continued to press forward. Hailemariam
completed his hat trick and David Browne scored
his second goal with a stunning backwards header.
At the final whistle the score was 5 – 1, St Peter’s
biggest ever win over Westlake.
The side will be aiming for more of the same when
they play Mt Albert Grammar on Saturday.

The First XI bounced back from a disappointing
loss against Sacred Heart in the previous league
match, with a 5 – 1 victory over Westlake Boys. The
XI played against the wind in the first half giving
Westlake the chance to open the score from a free

equaliser came from a penalty kick that was caused

Spotlight on Hockey
Hockey is a relatively new sport at St Peter’s. It
was established in 2003 through the energy and
drive of Suzane and Warren Kreft and Mr Don
Niven. Hockey is now a well recognized sport with
four teams representing the school every year. The
1st XI has experienced notable success in recent
years. In 2008 and 2009 they won the B grade.
Last year they were runners up in the A/B grade.
One of the aims of the team this year is be serious
competitors in the A grade. They have made an
excellent start towards achieving this goal with a
hard fought 2 – 4 loss against Auckland Grammar’s
1st XI. The side were up 2 – 0 in the first half.
There are two Under 15 teams and a 2nd XI. The
U15A look a good prospect to be contesting the
top U15 grade. Teacher in charge of hockey Mr
Pedersen is very impressed with all the teams
attitude and commitment at this stage of the
season. All teams train before school with the
1st XI currently training three mornings a week.
Mr Pedersen is heavily involved in the hockey
program. He is manager and assistant coach of the
1st XI.
Interview with Sean Griffin – Captain
of the 1st XI
Captain of the 1st XI this year is Sean Griffin. He is
very proud to lead this side and has a strong link to
the begiining of hockey at St Peter’s. Suzane Kreft
is his aunty and Warren his cousin. This is Sean’s
third year in the 1st XI and first year as captain. He
is relishing the role of captain. Sean enjoys having
the responsibility of leading the team and on field
performance.
What are the strength’s of the 1st XI?
This year there is a good mixture of experience and
youth. Goalie, Daniel Pavihi, is very experienced.
Four of the team have representative experience.
Another strength is our coaches Christos and Kurt
Pereira are old boys and past players of the 1st XI.
They are very connected to the culture of the side.
The team has a strong bond and enjoy spending
time together.
Who are the key players and why?
I feel a responsibility as captain to play consistently
to a high standard every game. Playing in the centre
half position I need to make sure the game plan is
implemented. Daniel Pavihi has a good view of
what is happening from goal. He communicates
well to his team mates about positioning. Jamie
Newlands is in his third year in the 1st XI. He does
a great job of leading the forwards.
What are the team goals for the season?
To be a competitive A grade side. We want to
be recognised by the top teams as a genuine
challenge. We want the middle school boys to look
at the 1st XI Hockey Team and aspire to make the
team in the future.
What are some of your most memorable
moments in the 1st XI?
The build up to games is great. Spending time
together. Tournament week is a highlight of the
year. We are serious about performing well and
we also have a lot of fun. Mr Pedersen’s maths
tutoring during tournament week is also great. As
code captain for hockey Sean is keen to assist with
getting players on Skill development programs and
the purchasing of well priced equipment. Boys are
encouraged to see him if interested.
St. Peter's College will receive a $10 donation for each
pair of shoes purchased by students or any member of
their family.
Students will need to identify themselves as a SPC
student showing their student ID Card. Please note that
this scheme is available only at the Newmarket store.

EDEN-The Inside Story Movie Night Monday 23 May 2011
School Hall 5:30pm for food and music. Film starts 7.00pm
Eden --the Inside Story. A feature length documentary presented by award winning film-maker, Robin Kewell.
The Eden project idea came from ex-rock musician Tim Smit who ‘found’ the famous “Lost Gardens of Heligan’.
He and a few friends got together in 1996 with a plan to build a place to tell the stories of the plants that
changed the world and against all odds they somehow managed it. Eden -the Inside Story is a four part feature
length documentary which has been especially edited down to 90 mins for this film night at St. Peter's College.
From the seed of an idea to the reality, it shows how a small team of determined people managed to create,
what has been described by many, as the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’…

EDEN – the Inside Story
Described by many as the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’ the Eden Project in Cornwall turned a disused
clay pit the size of 35 football pitches into one of the World’s most visited gardens.
A place where you can see, hear and touch the ‘Plants that Changed the World’
Coffee, Rubber, Cocoa, Rice, Tea, the Spices and over 20,000 trees.
Award winning cameraman Robin Kewell filmed the project from start to finish, nine years and nearly
4,000 hours of footage capturing this ‘roller coaster ride’
This 90 minute screening at St. Peter’s has been specially edited for
this Friends of Music fund raising night.
The film shows how a BIG IDEA can be transformed into REALITY by a small, determined and hard working
team driven by a strong leader, Tim Smit, an ex-rock guitarist who discovered the “Lost Gardens of Heligan”.
Tim and his team gave up their paid jobs and their personal lives on this journey into the unknown
which resulted in the biggest greenhouses in the world, where millions of people are reminded of the
importance of plants to all life on Earth.
The music for the film was composed, arranged and performed by Jim Carey and many musician friends, the final
work features the voices of the massed choirs of Cornwall, with over 1,000 voices !!!
“Jim Carey’s music makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, the body tingle, this is powerful
stuff indeed” Music Review 2005
The Film will be presented by film-maker Robin Kewell with a Q & A session
after the screening
