A Visit from St. Nicholas Advent Celebrations St. Agnes students are e n j o y i n g preparing for Christmas by celebrating with weekly advent celebrations. Advent Rainbow is a celebration that focuses on the various colors associated with Christmas and their meanings. These celebrations are held every Tuesday and Thursday morning in the gym beginning @ 8:20. All are welcome to attend. The final celebration will be the presentation of the Nativity by the Kindergarten class on Friday, December 19th @ 8:30 a.m. in the church. Lunch Help Needed We have a number of open spots for lunch servers in the 2nd semester. If you are able to help out even a few times it would be very much appreciated. Please contact Mrs. Brown with potential times for helping. Thank you! St. Nicholas paid a visit to the students at St. Agnes School on Friday, December 5th. While the students were in the gym learning about the life of St. Nick and listening to Mrs. Goerke read the story The Legend of the Candy Cane, St. Nicholas filled each student’s shoe with a candy cane and a quarter. Ask your child about some of the meanings behind the candy cane. Thank You! We recently received a $300.00 contribution from St. Thomas Moore church and school of Denver, Co. The church and school have a children's charity account that teachers can request contributions to be directed. Thomas Goerke (who was born in Scottsbluff and a former St. Agnes Parishioner) requested the contribution on behalf of his sister-in-law Barb Goerke who is the librarian at St. Agnes School. The request was approved by Msgr. Thomas Fryar V.G., who attended St. Agnes School and still holds it near and dear to his heart. A big Thank You to this combination of former St. Agnes parishioners for remembering St. Agnes School. We have begun working on telling time to the hour in math; students say it is ‘soo easy!’ Will it be so when we tell time to the half-hour? I certainly hope so! In reading, we are halfway through our third unit as we hit long vowel sounds, the soft and hard sounds of the letters ‘c’ and ‘g,’ and word blends. We took a ‘field trip’ to the Eucharistic Chapel. We learned about the tabernacle, the host, the oils and how to genuflect as we enter. We learned that the candle is a symbol that Jesus is alive and that the body of Christ is near the candle. We took turns entering the chapel, knelt down and said a prayer before exiting. We have begun a unit on environments in science. We will learn why animals live in different environments, what a terrarium is, and culminate the unit as we learn about the food chain and how energy moves from plants to animals. In writing, we are working on how we can prepare ourselves for Jesus’s coming and what Christmas is about. We will also write letters to Santa; these letters may be long ones! I am so proud of my first graders! They all have our daily routine down and get right to work in the morning. We have progressed in our writing as well. Students have gone from incomplete sentences to writing full page narratives in complete sentences! We all helped decorate the classroom Christmas tree and have learned the meaning of Advent from our daily prayer as well as Advent Rainbows celebrations. Blessings to all and a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! See you next year! 3rd Grade Class by Lisa Rogers Wow! We are quickly approaching Christmas. It is hard to believe how quickly our year is going. We are enjoying taking part in our Advent celebration of Advent Rainbows and learning the symbolism of the colors of the rainbow. We are reminded of St. Nicholas and the true meaning of Christmas and giving. We are learning about matter in Science. We have learned about physical characteristics and classified various items. We have starting talking about the states of matter, and we got to be “molecules in motion” and “be” different states of matter. We discussed condensation and evaporation, too. In Reading we are talking about solutions: what makes a good solution and when you may need a solution. We are working on compound words and drawing conclusions. We had a great turnout on our November Reading Incentive projects: Bag of Chips. The students read nonfiction books and then listed a fact on each “chip” in their bag. They wrote a short summary of their book and also made a cover. They learned quite a few new and interesting facts! December book has been changed to book of choice since it’s such a short time span. We wish everyone a very Merry Christmas, and encourage each other to remember the TRUE meaning of Christmas!
