Set Sail Trust The Long Port Group, in collaboration with the States of Guernsey and Deutsche Bank, sponsor the Sea Guernsey initiative which included the sponsorship of the iconic Mast on the Weighbridge roundabout, the flying of flags on the mast, the harbour banners over the summer months and the ‘Tree of Joy’ at the Mast at Christmas. Long Port, Deutsche Bank and Cable & Wireless have continued to independently sponsor the Mast and the Tree of Joy. Long Port was also the sole sponsor of the Sea Guernsey Regatta in 2006 and 2007. In 2005, off the back of their joint sponsorship of the above, Long Port, Deutsche Bank and Cable & Wireless established the Set Sail Trust, a trust to enable young underprivileged members of the local community gain accessibility to nautical based activities and to increase the local awareness of Guernsey’s maritime history amongst schools, clubs and the community at large. To date, the Trust has raised in excess of £50,000 and has so far funded, to name but a few, a sailing trip for children with social, emotional and behavioural disorders, a series of ‘Living History’ programmes for local schools to increase awareness of Guernsey’s nautical history and a corresponding E-Learning initiative and provided support towards local schools sailing trips for their Duke of Edinburgh awards. The Trust is now supported by Long Port, Deutsche Bank, The Partnership Advertising Agency and International Asset Monitor. In the community Kings Grand Charity Ball In 2007, the Kings 150th anniversary ball (organised and sponsored by the Long Port Group) raised £85,000 for charity, the largest amount raised in one night locally. This sum was split equally between the Maison Million appeal for Alzheimer sufferers and Help a Guernsey Child. A second ball, held in June 2008, raised £62,500 towards Les Bourgs Hospice to enable them to expand and improve this much needed facility to help care for more terminally ill people in Guernsey. North Show Over six years, the Long Port Group sponsored the local ‘North Show’ to the sum of £60,000. The North Show is a long-standing and important part of Guernsey’s heritage and culture, and without this significant sponsorship it would simply not have been able to survive. Admiral de Saumarez Trust Charles Billson, Chairman of the Long Port Group, is one of five Trustees of the Admiral de Saumarez Trust, a charitable organisation set up to raise money from private, corporate and financial institutions to support community and island regeneration projects. In addition to Charles Billson being a Trustee, Long Port has also made a significant donation to the Trust. Long Port also invests the time of its staff to help manage, coordinate and provide services to assist the Trust to achieve its objectives. The Trust is so called to mark the Admiral’s importance as a historical figure in Guernsey’s maritime history, and for his philanthropic legacy that remains evident today in the form of St James and Elizabeth College restoration. Delancey Park is the first project of many which the Trust intends to focus its rejuvenation efforts on. A variety of activities and amenities to enhance the park, including sports, social and historical facilities, are being built and invented by the Trust in consultation with the local community. In the community Admiral de Saumarez Trust (continued) The Trust will reconstruct the Admiral de Saumarez Monument that was demolished during the Occupation. It is invisaged that restoring this in a 21st century style will provide an iconic landmark which the community can be proud and will enrich the island’s heritage for future generations.
