Simply bring your clean, gently used costume(s) to the
Y anytime from October 1st-10th. Then, come to the Y
on October 11th between 10:00 am and 12:00 pm and
choose a new (to you!) costume!
We will also gladly accept costume donations from
families who have extra ones-even if you do not need
a new one! We hope that those extra costumes
donated will mean that all children who need a
costume will be able to choose one.
WINTER COAT EXCHANGE - SHARE THE WARMTH!
NOVEMBER 28, 2014
Starting November 1 both the Kent County & West
Bay Family YMCA’s will be accepting gently used coats
at the Kent County & West Bay Family branches.
Coats of all kinds are needed, from infant to adult and
will be available for distribution on November 28 (the
day after Thanksgiving), from 10am to 2pm at the
Kent County & West Bay Family branches.

CPR-AED/FIRST AID FOR THE COMMUNITY &
WORKPLACE (KC)

The American Safety and Health Institute (ASHI)
program for CPR-AED/ First Aid teaches how to
properly perform CPR and use an AED device as well
as how to properly apply first aid skills to save lives
and reduce recovery time.
There is an online component to this class. Details

Y’S OWL PRESCHOOL
NURTURING the POTENTIAL in EVERY CHILD for over 50 years.
The Kent County YMCA has been offering Y’s Owl Nursery School to children ages 3-5 in the Kent
County community for over fifty years. The program is state licensed by the Rhode Island Department
of Children, Youth and Families and is participating in the Bright Stars Quality Program. Our program
offers your child a warm, supportive environment that fosters the development of healthy self-esteem
and encourages personal growth. Your child will enjoy a variety of mind-enriching activities that
encourage creativity and individuality.
Your child will be guided and cared for by teachers selected for their training, certification, experience
and remarkable sensitivity to the needs of preschoolers. Our staff is comprised of certified early
childhood teachers and trained assistants. The school maintains a 1 to 8 ratio of staff to children.
The Y’s Owl Nursery School operates from September through early June. For more information contact

Our kindergarten enrichment program is specially
designed to provide an excellent complement to the
kindergarten portion of the school day. Open to
students in morning and afternoon kindergarten, the
program will provide daily opportunities for exploration,
creativity and self-expression. A weekly swim lesson
and physical education class are included for full-time
PM participants. Children attending Coventry and
Warwick public schools will be transported to the YMCA
for no additional fee.

Ages 6-36 Months with Parent
This class introduces infants to a safe aquatic
environment, while providing a positive hands-on
experience for both. Skills such as blowing bubbles,
kicking and floating are introduced. This is a wonderful
opportunity to build a trusting relationship with your
child and meet other parents and children while
participating in an enjoyable physical activity.

Ages 3-5 with Parent
This class is designed for preschoolers not yet ready to
take a swim lesson independently. With a focus on
encouraging self esteem and building trusting
relationships, this class teaches the basic swimming
techniques and prepares the child for classes without
parents. Basic skills include bubble blowing, floating,
kicking and water safety.

PRESCHOOL I BEGINNER (KC) (WB)
(FORMERLY PIKE)
This introductory class is designed for the pre- school
age child. With the use of instructional flotation
devices, children learn the basic swim skills, pool rules
and water safety. Skills include kicking, paddling, and
floating on their stomach and back, and putting their
face in the water, With progression, swimmers will learn
to jump into the pool and begin to swim without a
flotation device.
PRESCHOOL II ADVANCED (KC) (WB)
(FORMERLY EEL/RAY/STARFISH)
This class is designed for children able to swim 10-15
yards without flotation aid and instructor support.
Children will work on improving basic freestyle swimming
with rotary breathing, basic backstroke, kicking, floating
and diving.
GYM & SWIM (KC) (WB)
This fun combo class combines 30 minutes of gym and
30 minutes of swimming. Each week your child will have
the opportunity to engage in fun gross motor activities,
swimming & building new friendships. Open to ages 3-5
years.

LEVEL I BEGINNER (KC) (WB)

This introductory level class for school-age children will
teach stroke work and proper form for basic freestyle
and backstroke and introduce breaststroke. Skills also
include floating, kicking, and rotary breathing.
LEVEL II INTERMEDIATE (KC) (WB)
(FORMERLY GUPPY)
In the case of thunder or lightning, the pool
will be closed for 30 minutes following the
last sound of thunder.
The intent of this class is to build confidence and further
develop skills for school-age children. Focus will be on
learning basic front crawl stroke and back stroke while
increasing endurance. The four main competitive strokes
will also be introduced. The class will build on the
swimmers’ overall knowledge and skills and introduce
diving skills. Participants must be able to swim the full
length of the pool without stopping, demonstrating a
basic front crawl stroke with rotary breathing.

This class is for children who are comfortable swimming
several lengths of the pool. The focus will be on refining
the four main competitive swim strokes, techniques,
increasing endurance and introduction of new strokes
while building on the swimmers’ overall knowledge and
skills. Participants must be able to swim several lengths
of the pool without stopping, demonstrating a strong
front crawl stroke with rotary breathing and a strong
back stroke.
STROKE & ENDURANCE (KC)
You will learn basic swimming skills such as the crawl
stroke, breathing techniques, and floating to help you
gain confidence in the water. Our trained instructors
will individualize the class to meet your personal needs.

The SWIM Program is specifically designed for children
with special needs. SWIM will provide a positive outlook
and emphasis on the strengths of each swimmer. This
program will focus on water education, developing swim
skills and meeting child specific goals. Prior to the start
of the class, the instructor will set up a meeting to meet
the family and the child and set up basic swim goals and
schedule for the class.

This is a fun, structured dance class. Dancers will
learn the basics of Ballet, Tap, and Acro in a creative,

shoes, pink ballet shoes (black for boys), and
appropriate dance attire.

Health and Wellness Studio 2
This class is for dancers of all abilities. This is a fun,
structured class incorporating ballet, tap, jazz and
acro in a safe environment. Dress code is tan jazz
shoes, black tap shoes and pink ballet shoes

several different activities, including open
play and craft time, outdoor/indoor play,
story time and music and movement.
Leaders Club is designed to offer young adults the
opportunity to develop leadership skills as they provide
volunteer service within the YMCA and their community.
Sessions and events are balanced with values, discussions,
peer relationship building, and managing all aspects of a
young adult’s daily life. Meets during the NK school year.

An opportunity for our young gymnasts to participate in
an accelerated class and further their skills. Advanced
Kinder Gymnastics is for children who have mastered the

to kick to a full handstand and be able to cartwheel to
be ready for this class. Instructor permission is required.

by a trained lifestyle coach. The program has two phases
– the first consists of weekly one-hour sessions for 16

JOIN FOR ME is an evidence based weight management
program for kids and teens that struggle with extra
weight, and have a BMI percentile of 85 or greater.
Participants attend sessions with about 8-12 other

year of support. You will learn healthy strategies that
will support your child in reaching a healthier weight,

A chronic disease self-management workshop designed
to teach people ways to manage symptoms and

As a new member you have 30 days from the
inception date of membership to decide if the YMCA
is the place for you. If you are not completely
satisfied you will receive a full refund, including the
joiners fee. To do so, you must complete the
appropriate form available at the Welcome Center.
The form must be completed no later than 30 days
after the date on your membership receipt.

were enrolled - your home branch. We welcome the reasonable use of our
facilities by reciprocal agreement and reserve the right to determine abuse and
limit or terminate use on an individual basis. Participants may not be eligible
for member program rates at reciprocal locations.

Become a full member of the Y for only $5/month!
The purpose of our guest pass policy is to enhance
member service to current members who are
encouraging a friend to join, and to make reasonable
accommodations for: members of other YMCAs who
are traveling in our area, out-of-town family of
current members and out-of-town visitors.
ADULT GUESTS
 Guests must be 18+
 Guest must present photo ID
 Guest must complete release waiver form
 Members may bring no more than 2 guests at a time
 Each pass allows access to the facility for 1 day
 Guests are limited to 3 visits per year, after that we
encourage you to consider a Y membership.
UNDER 18 GUESTS
 Guests under the age of 18 may only access the
facility when accompanied by a parent/legal
guardian (who must be 18+ and must physically be
in the same program area as the guest.)

 Youth & Teen members are not allowed to bring
youth or teen guests.

Being active is one way you may improve your quality of
life and help prevent or control conditions like diabetes
and heart disease. Members receive the Living Fit
benefit, which provides an unlimited-use membership at
any network health club facility for just $5 per month.
You pay month-to-month, and you may cancel your
membership at any time.

consultation with one of our Member Navigators! This
one-on-one conversation will help you understand all of
the resources you have available at the Y to support
your journey towards a healthy lifestyle. We encourage
you to contact one of our specially trained Member
Navigators to set up an appointment today.
military outreach initiative
YMCA of the USA, the Armed Services YMCA and the
Department of Defense have launched the YMCA Military
Outreach Initiative to address the needs of families of
deployed military personnel who live far from a military
installation and require access to child development,
family strengthening, and health and well-being
programming. This initiative offers YMCA memberships
to eligible military families and personnel who may not
have access to a nearby military facility. Please contact
any Membership staff for eligibility information.
