Trick-or-treat Trail OCTOBER 11, 2014 Simply bring your clean, gently used costume(s) to the Y anytime from October 1st-10th. Then, come to the Y on October 11th between 10:00 am and 12:00 pm and choose a new (to you!) costume! We will also gladly accept costume donations from families who have extra ones-even if you do not need a new one! We hope that those extra costumes donated will mean that all children who need a costume will be able to choose one. WINTER COAT EXCHANGE - SHARE THE WARMTH! NOVEMBER 28, 2014 Starting November 1 both the Kent County & West Bay Family YMCA’s will be accepting gently used coats at the Kent County & West Bay Family branches. Coats of all kinds are needed, from infant to adult and will be available for distribution on November 28 (the day after Thanksgiving), from 10am to 2pm at the Kent County & West Bay Family branches. The Kent County YMCA has been offering Y’s Owl Nursery School to children ages 3-5 in the Kent County community for over fifty years. The program is state licensed by the Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth and Families and is participating in the Bright Stars Quality Program. Our program offers your child a warm, supportive environment that fosters the development of healthy self-esteem and encourages personal growth. Your child will enjoy a variety of mind-enriching activities that encourage creativity and individuality. Your child will be guided and cared for by teachers selected for their training, certification, experience and remarkable sensitivity to the needs of preschoolers. PARENT/INFANT SWIM CLASSES (KC) (WB) (FORMERLY SKIP) Ages 6-36 Months with Parent This class introduces infants to a safe aquatic environment, while providing a positive hands-on experience for both. Skills such as blowing bubbles, kicking and floating are introduced. This is a wonderful opportunity to build a trusting relationship with your child and meet other parents and children while participating in an enjoyable physical activity. PARENT/CHILD SWIM CLASS (KC) (WB) (FORMERLY PIKE WITH PARENT) Ages 3-5 with Parent This class is designed for preschoolers not yet ready to take a swim lesson independently. With a focus on encouraging self esteem and building trusting relationships, this class teaches the basic swimming techniques and prepares the child for classes without parents. Basic skills include bubble blowing, floating, kicking and water safety. preschool lessons (ages 3-5) $64 member/$110 community member PRESCHOOL I BEGINNER (KC) (WB) (FORMERLY PIKE) This introductory class is designed for the pre- school age child. With the use of instructional flotation devices, children learn the basic swim skills, pool rules and water safety. Skills include kicking, paddling, and floating on their stomach and back, and putting their face in the water, With progression, swimmers will learn to jump into the pool and begin to swim without a flotation device. PRESCHOOL II ADVANCED (KC) (WB) (FORMERLY EEL/RAY/STARFISH) This class is designed for children able to swim 10-15 yards without flotation aid and instructor support. Children will work on improving basic freestyle swimming with rotary breathing, basic backstroke, kicking, floating and diving. GYM & SWIM (KC) (WB) This fun combo class combines 30 minutes of gym and 30 minutes of swimming. Each week your child will have the opportunity to engage in fun gross motor activities, swimming & building new friendships. Open to ages 3-5 years. youth lessons (ages 6-12) $64 member/$110 community member LEVEL I BEGINNER (KC) (WB) (FORMERLY POLLIWOG) This introductory level class for school-age children will teach stroke work and proper form for basic freestyle and backstroke and introduce breaststroke. Skills also include floating, kicking, and rotary breathing. LEVEL II INTERMEDIATE (KC) (WB) (FORMERLY GUPPY) In the case of thunder or lightning, the pool will be closed for 30 minutes following the last sound of thunder. The intent of this class is to build confidence and further develop skills for school-age children. Focus will be on learning basic front crawl stroke and back stroke while increasing endurance. The four main competitive strokes will also be introduced. The class will build on the swimmers’ overall knowledge and skills and introduce diving skills. Participants must be able to swim the full length of the pool without stopping, demonstrating a basic front crawl stroke with rotary breathing. The focus will be on refining the four main competitive swim strokes, techniques, increasing endurance and introduction of new strokes while building on the swimmers’ overall knowledge and skills. Participants must be able to swim several lengths of the pool without stopping, demonstrating a strong front crawl stroke with rotary breathing and a strong back stroke. STROKE & ENDURANCE (KC) You will learn basic swimming skills such as the crawl stroke, breathing techniques, and floating to help you gain confidence in the water. Our trained instructors will individualize the class to meet your personal needs. SWIM will provide a positive outlook and emphasis on the strengths of each swimmer. This program will focus on water education, developing swim skills and meeting child specific goals. Prior to the start of the class, the instructor will set up a meeting to meet the family and the child and set up basic swim goals and schedule for the class. There is a 15 minute transition time allocated between the gym and swim portions of the classes. Parents are responsible to transition children from gym to swim or from swim to gym. CREATIVE MOVEMENTS FOR TODDLERS (KC) (AGES 12 MONTHS-3 YEARS) $64 members/$110 community member Main Gymnasium This creative movement class will give your toddler the opportunity to have fun, enjoy the freedom of physical activity and use their creativity in ways that builds selfesteem. Creative movement activities appeal to the whole child by connecting movement to self- expression and learning. TOTALLY TODDLERS WITH PARENT (KC) martial arts (ages 3-12) (KC) (WB) $64 member/$110 community member Champlin Lodge Participants will learn basic karate techniques that teach responsibility, self-awareness, selfconfidence and teamwork, while improving coordination and flexibility. Dancers will learn the basics of Ballet, Tap, and Acro in a creative, safe environment. Dress for all classes are black tap shoes, pink ballet shoes (black for boys), and appropriate dance attire. YOUTH COMBINATION DANCE (KC) (AGES 6-9) Health and Wellness Studio 2 This class is for dancers of all abilities. This is a fun, structured class incorporating ballet, tap, jazz and acro in a safe environment. Dress code is tan jazz shoes, black tap shoes and pink ballet shoes for girls and black ballet shoes for boys. (AGES 18 MONTHS-3 YEARS) $72 member/$144 community member Champlin Lodge Gymnasium This program is designed for the parent and child that would like to experience all that our Totally Toddlers class does with one exception-adults are welcome! We will participate in several different activities, including open play and craft time, outdoor/indoor play, story time and music and movement. Leaders Club is designed to offer young adults the opportunity to develop leadership skills as they provide volunteer service within the YMCA and their community. Sessions and events are balanced with values, discussions, peer relationship building, and managing all aspects of a young adult’s daily life. Champlin Lodge Field PARENT CHILD SPORTS MEDLEY (AGES 2½-3) (KC) Main Sports Gymnasium This program is designed to instill athletic confidence and sports skills in young children with the involvement of parents. Our coaches guide each session providing fun instruction, encouragement, and fun all around. This specific program will focus on the fundamentals of several popular sports including track/field, soccer, basketball, floor hockey, t-ball, lacrosse, tennis, and golf. youth sports $64 member/$110 community member YOUTH ARCHERY (AGES 6-12) (KC) Lower Archery Range September 1 - October 31 Learn the fundamentals of the sport of Archery from a National Certified Archery instructor. No prior experience with archery is required. PRE SEASON BASKETBALL (KC) Main Sports Gymnasium SPORTS MEDLEY (AGES 5-11) (KC) Main Sports Gymnasium This program is for any child that can’t get enough sports in his/her life! Your child will learn the basic skills in many popular sports including basketball, t-ball, floor hockey, soccer, lacrosse and track/field while focusing on the importance of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. September 1 - October 31 Pre season basketball will review fundamentals as well as build on individual skills to prepare players for league play. YOUTH BASKETBALL LEAGUE (YBL) REGISTRATION (KC) Meet the coaches, submit your shirt sizes and get the practice schedule at these designated registration times. The league runs from December through February with one night of practice per week for most age groups. PRESCHOOL GYMNASTICS (KC) (AGES 3 &4) Main Sports Gymnasium This structured gymnastics class introduces your preschooler to gymnastics and focuses on the development of gross motor skills in a fun, safe environment. KINDER GYMNASTICS 1 BEGINNER (KC) (AGES 4½-6) Main Sports Gymnasium This structured gymnastics class introduces your kindergartener to gymnastics and focuses on the development of gross motor skills in a fun, safe environment. Children must be able to follow basic directions and wait for their turn to be successful in this class. KINDER GYMNASTICS 2 INTERMEDIATE (KC) (AGES 4½-6) Main Sports Gymnasium This progression of Kinder Gymnastics takes the skills introduced in Kinder Gymnastics 1 and builds on them. Gymnasts must have mastered forward rolls, straddle rolls, walking on the low and middle beams alone and a front support on bars in order to move forward. Children must be able to follow basic directions and wait for their turn to be successful in this class. KINDER GYMNASTICS 3 ADVANCED (KC) (AGES 4½-6) Main Sports Gymnasium An opportunity for our young gymnasts to participate in an accelerated class and further their skills. Advanced Kinder Gymnastics is for children who have mastered the skills in the kinder gymnastics 1 and 2 and are eager to learn more. Children must have a strong bridge, be able to kick to a full handstand and be able to cartwheel to be ready for this class. Instructor permission is required. (AGES 6 AND UP) YOUTH GYMNASTICS 2 (KC) (AGES 6 AND UP) Main Sports Gymnasium This is the second developmental step in the Y's progressive gymnastics program for children who are looking to take their gymnastics to the next level. This class will build upon the skills mastered in Level 1 and requires a strong ability to follow directions and focus during class time. Registration in Level 2 requires a strong bridge, cartwheel, and handstand as well as instructor permission. In Level 2 conditioning and flexibility are introduced along with Handstand Forward Rolls, Handstand to Bridge, Bridge Kick-Over Drills, Round-Off and a Pullover on the Uneven Bars.
