The Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line (IGISOL) facility at the Accelerator Laboratory
of University of Jyväskylä has been an active place for fundamental research of the nuclear
landscape since early 1980’s [1]. The era of IGISOL-IV has begun with the recent move of
the facility to new experimental hall (See Fig. 1) with access to the heavy-ion K130 MeV
cyclotron and the new high intensity light-ion MCC30-15 cyclotron. The large area of
the new hall enables several improvements to the general facility including more effective
beam transportation, better access to the front end with lasers for the utilization of the LIS
(laser ion source) and the LIST (laser ion source trap) methods, installation of offline test
ion sources, and more sophisticated and permanent measurement and beam diagnostic
setups. Also the buffer gas purification has been reconstructed to meet the more stringent
gas purity requirements.
The increased intensity of beams and availability of beam time for experiments offer
greatly increased opportunities for new pursuits one of which is a neutron-induced fission
ion source currently under development. This will enable increasingly neutron-rich, exotic nuclei for mass, laser and decay spectroscopic studies. The general overview of the
IGISOL-4 facility, status and recent milestones in the commissioning of the facility are
presented in this work.
