THE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE, FROM KATHY BOALS
It’s Showtime!
Well, setup for Conejo Orchid Society’s display at the Santa Barbara International Orchid Show starts Tues. March 1 at
12:00 noon. Vicky and her crew have designed another fantastic display- this year even including a waterfall. Several of
you have signed up to help but we can always use more hands- please contact Vicky Price if you can help on Tues. or
Wed. Your efforts will be greatly appreciated, even if you can only stay for a couple of hours. ALSO: teardown is very
important! Sunday afternoon starting at 5:00 pm when the show closes. Your help would be appreciated!
Our monthly meeting will be March 14 and our speaker will be Pam Aitchison of the San Fernando Valley Orchid
Society. Make sure you don’t bring the little kids to the meeting as her topic will be “Orchids: Sex, Lies and
Perceptions”.
See you all at the show and the meeting!
Kathy
The Santa Barbara Show
Santa Barbara International Orchid Show Display
The Santa Barbara show is early this year, but we have our display ready to go. Participating in the setup is
lots of fun. You get to see what everybody else is doing and you get to just immerse yourself in orchids. For
me (the editor), it is my drug of choice!
Another special tradition is Vicky’s delicious spaghetti Wednesday night after setup. A few of us have our RVs
in the RV lot at the fairgrounds. We gather for spaghetti, orchids and wine… sounds good, huh?!!
And the
ribbon judging on Thursday is such a wonderful learning experience.
The weather looks like it will be good for the show. What a nice way to spend the day at the show, good food
around town, and ORCHID OPEN HOUSES!
Remember, there will be open houses during the SB show at Cal-Orchids, SBOE, Hatfields, Orchids Royale, and
more! And remember Leslie’s rule of purchases: If you buy 10 or less, you didn’t buy a thing. And the $7.50
Santa Barbara Orchid Estate specials – 2 of those count as only 1 purchase. So consider this method of
counting before you tell your spouse how you did…
Pam Aitchison
Orchids: Sex, Lies & Deception (Orchid Pollination)
Our guest speaker for March is Pamela Aitchison. Pam is a Certified University of California Master Gardener and has been for
many years. Pam is a regular guest lecturer and California State University at Northridge (CSUN), and is also a mentor and
trainer for the new class of Master Gardeners each year. She regularly teaches gardening classes at Community Gardens,
Schools, Fairs and Garden Clubs. Class topics include Organic Gardening, Sustainable Landscaping, Building Quality Soil,
Composting, Tree Care and Pruning and Edible Gardening.
Pam has loved orchids most of her life and has been growing orchids for more than 30 years. Pam is the Vice President of the
San Fernando Valley Orchid Society. Pam is also the webmaster for the SFVOS and Editor for their newsletter. Pam lives in
Northridge, and grows many types of orchids in her greenhouse and outdoors. Her favorites include Arpophyllum, Cattleyas,
Cymbidiums, Dendrobiums, Epidendrums, Oncidiums, Maxillaria, Miltonias, Oncidiums, Vandas, Vanilla Orchids and
Zygopetalums.
At our March meeting, Pam
presentation about the
orchid pollination. Orchid
than the flowers of most other
their reproductive methods are
unique. Many orchid flowers
illusions and trickery to lure
will be showing us a
fascinating world of
flowers are different
plant species, and
even more
resort to clever
their pollinators.
HUNTINGTON VOLUNTEERS ARE AT IT AGAIN
Joe Grodell, Kathy Boals, Leslie Naines-Brown and Gayle Brodie were busy at the Huntington during the last month! They
have been repotting the large cattleya collection, mounting some of the miniature orchids, setting up drip lines for new
additions to the Cymbidium species collection, and working on orchid propagation in the orchid lab and in the greenhouse.
The greenhouse is ablaze with blooms being prepared for the Santa Barbara Show, and the volunteers can be justifiably proud
of their part in maintaining this amazing collection of orchids.
Our Annual Fundraiser
Our annual fundraiser will be June 3-5 at the Thousand Oaks Library. It is not too early to think about your participation. We
will need volunteers to help set up, tear down, talk to customers and generally show your smiling faces to the public. We
always hope to educate the public and encourage them to join our society.
It is also not too early to think about any plants you would like to donate or consign. One of our major successes of last year
was when Kathy Boals cleaned out her greenhouse! She had nice plants with a picture of the flowers and they sold before she
even got them on the tables!
I know I am already looking at which plants I will be dividing and donating. I already divided a red cymbidium! Do I really
need 4 red cyms???? Do I need 3 of those purple dendrobiums???? Time to cull my herd…
All plants should be in good health and clean. Remember, these plants reflect on our society so we want to make sure we are
providing quality plants. By dividing them early, they will have some time to establish new roots before the show.
