HE appeal of child actors is
deceptively straightforward:
They embody innocence or the
shock of its loss. But the danger
of overacting is ever present, as
is the possibility that a child expected to
act naturally may seem more stilted than
an adult. Audiences can be sensitive about
children cast in fraught situations and suspicious of sentimental ploys, no matter
how noble the directorial intent.
Films with serious-minded preoccupations and a need for challenging performances might seem the most vulnerable to
such hazards. And yet many children have
left indelible impressions in art-house
classics from The 400 Blows and The
Bicycle Thief to the countryside dramas of
Abbas Kiarostami. The youth of the actors,
often nonprofessionals, combined with
their characters’ outsize plights tend to
win the audience’s sympathies, even as the
stories address experiences beyond the
ken of the performers.
But for directors and actors, what are
the attractions and challenges of films like
The Kid With a Bike, releasing soon, about
an orphan obsessed with re-establishing
contact with his father; or Monsieur
Lazhar, opening on April 13, about students dealing with their teacher’s death?
As the brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc
Dardenne, directors of The Kid With a
Bike, see it, young actors bring a thrilling
element of the unknown. Jean-Pierre,
speaking from the Dardennes’ office in
Liege, Belgium, said: “When a child without acting experience is on set – and this is
not meant in any kind of derogatory way –
he brings a presence like an animal, a cat.
He is there.” The Dardennes, Cannes-honoured high priests of realism, have made
several films centring on parent-child relationships, beginning in 1996 with La
Promesse, featuring an untested Jeremie
Renier.
For the kid, Cyril, of the aptly named Kid
With a Bike, the Dardennes cast the 13year-old Thomas Doret. Preparation was
crucial – 45 days of rehearsal, in this case
– and it helped that Doret was a fast learner with good instincts. “You had to give
enough but not lay it on too thick,” he said
from his home in Liege, recalling a
demanding scene in which Cyril apologises to his foster mom (Cecile De France).
For younger child actors it can seem
amazing that they are performing at all.
One of the best examples remains the star
of the 1996 French drama Ponette:
Victoire Thivisol, at all of 4, played the title
role, a girl whose mother dies in a car
crash. This moonlighting kindergartener
won a prize at the Venice Film Festival,
even as her director, Jacques Doillon,

a mess in your head. You have to work. I
wish I could act like I was on Ponette.”
Then there is the natural charisma of
child performers, often as distracting as it
is beneficial.
The Canadian director Philippe
Falardeau took special care not to be distracted by cuteness when casting the
youngsters who play sixth-graders in
Monsieur Lazhar, which was nominated
for the Oscar for best foreign-language
film this year. “I take a lot of time in the
audition process,” said Falardeau, who
built on his experience directing a 10-yearold in It’s Not Me, I Swear! (2008). “I like
to close my eyes and listen to them,” he
said, explaining that he wanted to “believe
that it’s a real kid talking in a real situation.”
The children in Monsieur Lazhar, like
those in Ponette, bear heavy emotional
burdens. Within the first few minutes two
students witness the aftermath of a
teacher’s suicide.
Arguably it’s this very gap – between
impressionable naivete and the extremity
of the story – that gives child performances their power. As audience surrogates
they offer an artificially heightened sense
of point of view, seeing everything new,
with untutored intensity.
Not infrequently experience itself
is a central theme. In the annals of
child-centred cinema Volker
Schloendorff’s Tin Drum, the
1979 adaptation of Guenter
Grass’ novel, remains indelible
with its portrayal of a boy in
postwar Germany. The child’s
arrested development and

stand as symbolic reminder of a past that
cannot be forgotten.
Reached in Berlin, the Swiss-born actor
David Bennent, who at 12 played the boy,
remembered how his father, the actor
Heinz Bennent, read Grass’ novel to him.
“When I had a question, I asked, and he
answered it without any fear,” said
Bennent, who is touring Europe in a production of Long Day’s Journey Into
Night. “If you have a very tense parent
who hides everything
from their kids, who
hides the love, or says,
‘Please, not in front of the child,’ then for
the child, it becomes very difficult.”
Despite the film’s topics Schloendorff
preserved “a light rhythm” on the set,
Bennent said, nurturing a sense of play in
the young actor.
For young would-be stars the experience
of working with such formidable talents as
Schloendorff, the Dardennes and Doillon
opens up creative horizons at an intimidatingly young age.
“I’m not going to mince words: I’d like
to work with Spielberg,” Doret said. “I
love ET.”

fended off criticism by noting that a child
therapist was on set. In practice the challenges were rather basic.
“I didn’t know how to read,” Thivisol,
20, said by phone from Paris, remembering the experience as pleasant. (For one
thing, she said, it was “way better than
school.”) “I had someone who was coaching me, saying the text out loud, and that
was the way I learned my lines.” Footage
from the set shows her switching in and
out of character, startlingly aware of what
she’s doing.
Thivisol now studies acting in Paris and
marvels at her precocious feat.
“That’s what I’m working to get back –
the kid,” she said. “When you are acting as
a kid, you just do the thing. Now you start
thinking about, ‘OK, if I do it this, the spectator will perceive it like that,’ and you get

Green vegetables vital for breast cancer patients
Health
guide
WOMEN diagnosed with breast cancer are more likely to survive if they eat up their greens, a study suggests. A Chinese study has
found a link between higher consumption of cruciferous vegetables such as greens, cabbage and broccoli, and reduced breast cancer
death rates. Researchers followed the progress of almost 5,000 women for around five years after they were diagnosed with breast
cancer, Daily Mail reported. They found that the more cruciferous vegetables women ate during the first three years after diagnosis, the
less likely they were to die. As consumption increased, the chances of dying from breast cancer fell by between 22 percent and 62
percent and from all causes by between 27 percent and 62 percent. During the study period, 587 women died, 496 from breast cancer, the Mail said. The researchers pointed out that cruciferous vegetable consumption habits differed between China and the West.
“Commonly consumed cruciferous vegetables in China include turnips, Chinese cabbage/bok choy and greens, while broccoli and brussels sprouts are the more commonly consumed cruciferous vegetables in the US and other Western countries,” said study leader Sara
Nechuta, from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, US.
Working out
in intense
temperatures
COURTNEY RUBIN
NYT SYNDICATE
T was 105 degrees – as hot as a typical steam room – at Pure Yoga on
the Upper East Side on a recent
Saturday, but for the 16 women
already perspiring through a series
of plie squats in a ballet-based barre
method workout, it wasn’t blistering
enough.
“We’re turning it up to 110 degrees by
popular demand,” the instructor, Kate
Albarelli, 31, announced in the sort of
cheerful tone that would usually signal a
time to rest. The women looked as delighted as if she’d given them one.
That’s because the heat is on for a workout promising not just the best body, but
also the best sweat. A small but growing
upscale clientele, most conditioned to
years of regular workouts, won’t leave the
locker room for much below 90 degrees.
(Typical gyms are 68 to 72 degrees, in line
with American College of Sports Medicine
guidelines; Manhattan’s hottest recorded outdoor temperature is 106.)
For these religious exercisers, based
mostly in New York and Los
Angeles, only sweltering temperatures produce adequate workouts:
a jackhammering heart rate, pliable muscles and a psychologically satisfying sweat that devotees
describe as “detoxing.” So gyms
and studios are trying to lure
them with ever hotter, harder
yoga classes, in addition to roasted versions of Pilates, kettlebells,
group cycling and more. (Cue
Nelly’s Hot in Herre, which seems
to appear on every playlist.)
“You don’t waste three songs sitting around warming up – you can
hit it hard from the start,” said Mimi
Benz, 31, an owner of the Sweat Shoppe,
a 7-month-old hot group cycling studio in
North Hollywood, Califonia “I’m not going
to lie, it’s intense.”
Alexandra Cohen, 42, the supervising
producer of “The View,” said, “I don’t have
time for hours in the gym doing cardio and
weights and then sitting in the steam room
to detox.”
She found Bikram yoga (a static 26-pose
sequence practiced in 105-degree temperatures) too slow, and hot power yoga (a
generic term for fast-flowing classes) too
easy. So, twice a week she goes to the yoga
teacher Carlos Rodriguez in New York for a
grueling mash-up of the Brazilian martial
art capoeira, explosive vinyasas, calisthenics and weights. For that hourlong workout, performed barefoot in a room hotter
than the human body, Cohen lines up four
exercise mats so she doesn’t waste time (or
sneak a cheeky breather) when one
becomes too sweat-slicked to use.
“A good day is when I have to literally
wring my clothes out,” she said. “Some
people do crazy cleanses. I do hot-room
workouts.” She mused: “I tell you, your
body adjusts. I probably need to make it
harder at this point.”
The workouts don’t promise fat-melting
or even weight loss; instead, the emphasis
is on the “extreme” brag factor. In
September, Crunch in New York introduced mat-based Pilates at 99 degrees,
inviting clients to “turn it up a notch” and
“sweat it out” in a workout “that will have
you looking hotter than ever.”
Loren Bassett, 41, a demanding yoga
teacher in Manhattan, lovingly calls some

“insane.”
It’s
partly for them that she and her trainer,
Cole McDonough, of David Barton Gym,
cooked up Bassett’s Boot Camp for Pure
last year. The class is 75 minutes of alternating high-intensity cardio, crow poses
and core work. Marie Claire magazine pronounced it “America’s toughest workout”;
spaces sell out weeks in advance.
On a recent Sunday in March, as the
class tried to hold a plank after a round of
jumps, squats and push-ups, the gentle
thrum of what sounded like rain was audible when the music stopped. It was actually sweat landing on mats.
“You’re crawling through the desert in
search of the oasis of a better body,”
Bassett said softly, as students struggled to
circle the room on all fours, bodies parallel
to floor and feet on purple gliding discs the
size of dinner plates. Later, she added: “I
called an hour before class and told them to
crank up the heat. Hot enough for you?”
Consensus: Yes.
Still, there’s the occasional discount
request for “cold” classes. Devotees discuss
studio-heating methods in the sort of detail
befitting an electrician and know which
corner of which studio is hottest.
“I’m the crazy girl who gets there early
just to get the spot under the heating vent,”
said Karin Wilk, 45, an MBA student in
New York who takes hot classes exclusive-
ly. “I feel like it totally pushes me to the
edge, and nothing else can bother me the
rest of the day after surviving hell.”
Experts agree on the benefits, but only to
a point.
Douglas Casa, a kinesiology professor at
the University of Connecticut and an
expert on athletic exertion in heat, said that
while there’s no question that hot workouts
are harder, any benefits peak at about 100
degrees. “Above that, you’re just jeopardising safety,” said Casa, who is also the chief
operating officer of the university’s Korey
Stringer Institute, named for the
Minnesota Vikings offensive lineman who
died of heat stroke in 2001.
The trainer Tracy Anderson, whose
clients have included Gwyneth Paltrow
and, at one point, Madonna, said her
research put the sweet spot for safety but “a
muscle state that promotes change” at 86
degrees and 65 percent humidity. Casa
judged that that was about right, “at least
for sweat effect.”
People working out in hot temperatures.
Vigorous hot workouts, he said, are only
for the highly fit (and well hydrated) – and
even then there are limits.
“If it’s so hot you can’t get a hard workout in, it defeats the purpose,” said
Casa, who tests his theories trail-running in the heat. (He has not tried any
of these workouts.) “If you’re able to
maintain the same intensity in the
heat as you do in cool conditions,
you’ll have to work harder and you’ll
burn more calories. But a lot of people can’t do as much in the heat, so it
could just be a wash – you might as
well work harder where it’s cooler.”
What about the detox effect?
“That’s a hoax,” he said. “I don’t think
there’s any inherent advantage to
sweating more. Some people just like
the feeling.”
No one keeps figures on these gym class
heroes – the trend is too limited and
localised for the International Health,
Racquet & Sportsclub Association to track.
But the demand for ever-hotter exercise
rooms is sufficient enough that Chad Clark,
a former college wrestler turned Bikram
yoga instructor in Scranton, Pa., has built
an entire business turning studios tropical.
He recently worked with a manufacturer to
design a special heater that could maintain
temperatures of up to 175 degrees.
“I use much more industrial equipment
so you can make a room a sauna without a
problem,” Clark said.
(One of his clients, a studio owner in San
Diego, requested a 158-degree room, a typical temperature for a sauna. Clark thinks
he’s since moved “to the lucky folks in
Brooklyn.”) “It’s like we used to do in
wrestling, except without plastic suits to
sweat off the weight,” he said.
This month Chaise23, run by Lauren
Piskin, who has trained Olympic athletes,
including the gold-medal-winning ice
skater Sarah Hughes, enters the fray in the
Flatiron district with hot Pilates using
Piskin’s “reinvention” chair. (No sitting
here: It’s basically a stool with a weighted
“Without adding heat, I don’t think I
pedal, paired with overhead resistance
could get a certain type of person in the
bands.)
Also on Chaise23’s schedule: Hot TRX door to do Pilates,” Piskin said. “But it just
suspension training, a class featuring so happens I believe in it. It lets you do a
innocuous-looking bands designed by a really hard-core workout that gives you
former member of the Navy SEALs that that perfect, lean muscle.”
In February, Pure – a bastion of type-A
introduce instability so that the humblest
of motions induces a burning that suggests exercisers – unveiled a heated version of its
muscles engulfed by cartoon flames (even signature barre method workout because
when done in standard-temperature much of its membership refused to try the
class otherwise. (In the last four years,
rooms).
Pure’s hot offerings have increased by 50
percent to meet demand, according to
company figures.)
“A lot of barre method workouts tout
that you don’t sweat, for women who want
to go to lunch after and not worry about
their blowouts,” said Albarelli, a former
ballerina who taught versions of the workout at several other studios before creating
her own. “I feel like the heat removes the
priss factor.”

Earrings for your face shape
Fashion
guide
IT’S time to flaunt the best accessory! Whatever may be your face type, there is always an earring to compliment your face: Oval face: You have the
most versatile face shape and you can sport almost anything! Soft shapes like teardrops, pearls, studs and ovals are the most recommended.
Remember to choose something which will be in proportion to your head size and body scale. Celebrities - Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Aniston, Julia
Roberts, Sharon Stone, Madhuri Dixit, Priyanka Chopra. Round face: You should wear longer earrings which will add some angle to your face.
Angular, long and lean earrings are the best. Dangles, ovals and bold angular studs would also suit your face type. Celebrities - Kate Winslet,
Cameron Diaz, Penelope Cruz, Preity Zinta. Heart - shaped face: Your face is more similar to the oval one, but is narrower below the cheekbones
and pointed at the chin with a wider forehead. You should opt for earrings which are wider at the bottom. Ovals and teardrops are the best ones for
you. You can also sport the pyramid style earrings for a trendier look. Celebrities - Sohie Dahl, Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, Rani
Mukherjee, Sonakshi Sinha. Square face: You should opt for earrings which are longer than they are wide. Earrings with curves at the bottom, small
circular earrings, large oval shapes are the best for you. Celebrities - Sandra Bullock, Demi Moore, Isabella Rosellini, Amrita Arora, Sonam Kapoor,
Kareena Kapoor.

Amid new looks, a new way to see

EI Kawakubo was backstage. Despite a
forceful ovation at the Ecole des BeauxArts, she had remained rooted in place, all five feet of
her, dressed in the black
battle garb that had turned the
Paris fashion soil 30 years ago. She
had on black sunglasses, which
made her look like a rock star – or
rather, at almost 70, simply confirmed that she is one.
Fashionistas love to say
what a genius Kawakubo is,
and it’s probably annoying, like hearing the
Dadaists yap about
Marcel Duchamp. But
here’s your choice in
2012: You can watch
a show like Haider
Ackermann’s, in a
grand salon, with
pretentious music
and models giving
the old death-ray
glamour stare as
they
mince
down the carpet
in
opulent
leathers and
pencil skirts,
or you can sit
back in front of
Kawakubo’s
plywood runway
and
have your
consciousness opened by what she does
with plain felt.
At the moment, Ackermann is the
tribe’s darling. His dramatic compositions of straitjacketed tailoring and
rich colour work on people like a
stun gun. They’re knocked senseless. They forget that this stuff has
been around the track before: in the
diva years of Gianfranco Ferre, for
one.
Early in his career, Ackermann’s
soldierly nomads actually looked
cool. But now he feeds into the worst
values and assumptions of the industry, which almost always finds a way
to confuse effect for fashion.
Ackermann is all effect.
In the chiffon trenches, Kawakubo
is the only designer who thinks like

an artist, in that she creates fashion that modifies
your view of something, be it women or an aspect of
culture. In 1973, she founded her label, Comme des
Garcons; and in recent years, with the help of her husband, Adrian Joffe, she has added commercial ballast
to her company, like perfumes, so she can be free to
concentrate on her runway collections.
Kawakubo also isn’t greedy or grand. You
almost never see her at industry events.
She’s a worker, a quality she has in common with Azzedine Alaia, the nowretired Martin Margiela, Karl
Lagerfeld and Raf Simons. (Hey,
here’s an idea for Dior: Why
doesn’t it hire Alaia,
Kawakubo and Simons on a
rotating basis to design
collections?)
Her latest collection
seemed to turn couture,
and the fashion world’s
obsession with iconic
shapes and structure, on its ear.
Her
opening
coats, nippedwaist jackets
and dresses were
rendered as flat
two-dimensional
shapes in a polyester felt. Their
size reinforced the
point; they looked
stamped out, like so many handbags, by
those mercurial giants of fashion.
The colours were also glorious: cheerful pinks, bright blues, orange, a bit of
yellow, violet. But they, too, seemed
to reflect current taste for bold
combinations, like those used
by the painter Ellsworth
Kelly. And Kawakubo’s
compacted floral prints
also suggested a trend.
In fact, Joffe said, the
fabrics came from
Uzbekistan.
Kawakubo
doesn’t
explain her fashion. (She
typically offers one or two
words; this season, it was “the
future in two dimensions.”) When

asked about a couture influence, she could see
such a connection, she said, but it wasn’t part of
her thought process. Strikingly, these designs
are extraordinarily simple, the opposite of most
fashion nowadays. The felt and sequined-felt
pieces are completely flat and stitched an
inch from the outer edge, and none of the
clothes have any inner structure. Yet
they floated angelically on the models.
To say that her designs are
simple is not to suggest
that anyone can do
them (you would
need her patternmakers) but rather
that anyone can
understand
them.

Watanabe’s collection
was
grounded in a
different way.
Menswear tailoring, in conservative but
fresh-looking checks
and solids like camel,
served as the basis for
nearly everything in
the show. But the
results were seldom masculine.
Some
jackets
were
slightly
curvy, while others were trim and
slyly suggested
Watanabe deconstruction.
Underneath were
lovely dresses in velvet-flocked chiffon or knit
pieces. Aside from being wearable, the clothes showed that
fashion’s boy-girl romance can
always be rethought.
Leather and fur have been a
big story of the Paris show.

show was a mishmash, with bronze jeans
and graffiti prints, there were solid
pieces.
Because Phoebe Philo is expecting a
child in a few weeks, Celine held a
low-key presentation for a few editors. The overall mood was luxesporty, with loose tops that suggested sweatshirts and roomy
trousers, mainly in white. Coats
in bright blue or dusty pink
wool are oversize, too,
with wide half-belts.
At times the fit
seemed a bit soupy.
The
standout
pieces were in
leather
(and
some
in

fur

that

pieces
are
developed further.

runway was just an
extension of that
scene, all under the
same
roof.
The
clothes captured that
spirit. In one of his best Lanvin
shows in a while, Elbaz shifted
from hourglass dresses in bright
slashes of colour to tough black
pieces with great accessories to
dark dresses with wide ruffles.
The collection caught many of
the trends, but with a devilmay-care attitude that turned
the most decked-out looks into
a kind of gantlet.

Jessica Biel hunts for wedding dress
Eve lashes out at Nicki Minaj
ACTRESS Jessica Biel has reportedly started planning for
her wedding to actor-singer Justin Timberlake and visiting Paris to hunt for dresses. Timberlake proposed to her
last December and Biel finally flashed her engagement
ring in March. Their wedding rumours gained ground
after she was spotted scouring Parisian bridal boutiques
over the Easter weekend. Contactmusic.com reports that
she was spotted going from store to store, including the
high-end showrooms of designers Giambattista Valli and
Elie Saab, while her assistant carried a wedding
planning book.
SINGER Eve has lashed out at rapper Nicki Minaj for her rivalry with
singer Lil’ Kim. Eve believes that as a female singer Nicki should pay
respect to Lil’ Kim. “It’s not about publicity. It’s about wanting

your thing right now and no one can take that away from you. Nicki we all see it - but at the end of the day, if it wasn’t for Kim, she
wouldn’t be here,” she told Women of Hip Hop magazine. “A lot of
people want me to hate Nicki and say crazy things about her. I got
nothing to say about her. Until somebody names me, I don’t feel like
nobody is talking about me. I wouldn’t have a problem putting her on
a record,” aceshowbiz.com quoted her as saying.

Humphries
has warned Kim
Kardashian’s new
lover, Kanye West,
that he’ll need a lot
of patience in his relationship with the
reality star.
The basketball star, 27, apparently wished
the rapper ‘good luck’.
It’s also claimed that Kris thinks Kim had
been unfaithful during their relationship
which resulted in a marriage lasting just 72
days.
On US website Radar an insider close to
Kris apparently claims, “When Kris found
out about Kim going public with Kanye, he
told his friends he wanted to wish West,
‘good luck’ as he is going to need it.
“Kris knows for a fact that this dalliance
between Kim and Kanye has been going on
for the past two years. Kim kept in touch with
Kanye after she married Kris and promised
him that she would cut off communication
with him, but she never did. Kris is suspicious of the timing of Kim deciding to go public with the relationship because the new season of Keeping Up with the Kardashians is
premiering in May, and Kanye has released a
new album.”
According to Radaronline.com the rapper
might even appear on the new series of Kim’s
reality show.
A source told the website, “Kanye is head
over heels in love with Kim, and he has told
her he would love to appear on the reality
show if she wants him to.
“Kim is a bit leery of having her man
appear on camera because of the whole fiasco
with her soon-to-be-ex-husband, Kris
Humphries.”
However the Huffington Post has reported
that all 18 episodes of the new show have
already been filmed and were shot before
Kim and Kanye officially got together.
The rapper is no stranger to reality TV and
was seen on camera with Kim in the first season of Kourtney and Kim take on New York
shot in 2010.
A spokesperson for the reality star failed to
respond to a request for comment.
Rumours about Kim and Kanye have been
swirling around for some time now, even
Kim Kardashian with Kanye West.
“Kris knows for a fact that
this dalliance between Kim
and Kanye has been going
on for the past two years.
Kim kept in touch with
Kanye after she married
Kris and promised him that
she would cut off
communication with him,
but she never did”
before she’d started dating Kris Humphries.
And since their separation Kim has been pictured leaving Kanye’s New York apartment
the morning after they’d been on a date.
Claims by Kanye’s ex, Amber Rose, seem
to back up what Kris is claimed to have
said.

Wiig, 38, would not confirm media

years on the popular late-night programme as a comic actress and sketch

But she told actor Alex Baldwin in his

at SNL, you know, it’s so fast-paced,”
said Wiig, whose SNL characters
include hard-to-please movie critic

“I will say that when I do leave it’s not

that. It’s just that it’s time. When I do

But you have to leave the things you

Wiig became a mainstream star
when the raunchy female comedy
Bridesmaids, which she co-wrote
and also starred in, became one
of the biggest movies of 2011.
Wiig has turned down offers to
make a movie sequel.
She told Baldwin her next
movie was a comedy drama called

which she plays a New York writer
whose relationship has ended.
“Without giving too much away, people

told Baldwin.
Wiig said she would also love to do a
dramatic movie, saying “There are a

doing next that aren’t comedies at all.”

Kris with each other.”
Just a few days ago Kim spent 24 hours in
New York with Kanye West after flying in
from Los Angeles last Wednesday.
They started off their time together by
watching The Hunger Games at a Manhattan
cinema, before moving on to the theatre to
see the interactive production Sleep No
More. Following the visit, the duo crossed the
road to visit the Maderley Bar, where they
enjoyed the sounds of live band, Stella St
Clair.
After their epic date, Kim spent the night at
the hip-hop star’s TriBeCa apartment. She
was photographed sneaking out of his home
at 10am on Thursday morning, wearing the
same leather trousers, T-shirt and heels she
was wearing the night before.
But after a quick freshen up at her hotel,
she was soon back by his side for lunch at
Serafina on East 61st Street.
Kim kept the same
pair of black heels
and
leather
trousers on for
lunch, but she
had switched the
top half of her
ensemble.

Aishwarya to return in a South film?
Madhuri signs Bhardwaj’s Dedh Ishqiya
AISHWARYA Rai Bachchan is being sent a dozen odd scripts on
a weekly basis. Ever though the actress - who is on ‘maternity
leave’ - has not sent out feelers that she’s ready to make her
comeback, producers have been trying to woo her. A source
reveals that Ash is likely to make her return to the big screen in
a South film, and not a Hindi film. The source adds, “Even
though B-town producers are ready to be accommodating and
adjust the dates as per her schedule, Ash might end up saying
‘yes’ to a South film. There’s a woman-centric role that has got
her excited and if dates work out then she’s likely to make the
announcement soon.”
BOLLYWOOD diva, Madhuri Dixit, has confirmed that she will play
the lead in Vishal Bhardwaj’s Dedh Ishqiya. Directed by Abhishek
Choubey, Dedh Ishqiya is a sequel to 2010 film Ishqiya, which
starred Vidya Balan, Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi. “On set
for Star’s Life OK. I am also doing Dedh Ishqiya and Jhalak... is
right around the corner. More to come!,” she posted on her Twitter
page. In 2007, Madhuri, who is married to US-based Sriram Nene,
was seen in the film Aaja Nach Le, after which she shifted back to
India. The actress returned in 2011 to be a judge on dance reality
show Jhalak Dikhla Jaa. This will be Madhuri’s first film after shifting back to India.

PREGNANT Shilpa Shetty says
that she is glued to the television
set whenever team Rajasthan
plays a match. She also talks about
missing Shane Warne, and loving
how everyone’s pampering her
A
Q: Your team’s won two matches, you are
eight months pregnant, SFL is doing well one of the happiest phases of your life?
A: Life has always been good, but it’s just that
presently, there is lot of excitement and wait for
the arrival of our baby. Then immediately we
have the IPL, SFL, and my spa. So, yes, there is
a lot happening and I am happy and enjoying
this phase. I’m also really loving all the attention that our families and friends are showering
on me!
You will not be able to attend most of the
matches in the fifth edition of IPL - does
that make you feel bad?
Fortunately, I am pregnant and unfortunately that
does not allow me to travel, but I will be watching
every match and cheering from home.
Last year in IPL, you wore two watches for
luck - what are your plans for this season?
All of us want to take the credit for every run
scored and get superstitious with every wicket
lost. We just realise it’s so futile after the IPL season is over.
You have Rahul Dravid in the team, both
as a captain and coach. Are you a satisfied
owner?
Of course, Rahul Dravid is a legend and a capable
captain. He is a great inspiration to all the youngsters in the team. Everyone’s going to learn and
grow individually under his guidance, which shall
help the team on the whole.
Will Shane Warne be missed? Do you
seek his advice regarding the team?
Shane will always be missed. He has sent the team
his good wishes and will always be a part of our
family.
Do you get time to interact with the players
and if yes, what advice do you give them?
I do interact with them regularly, but this time, I
will meet the team once they come to Mumbai as
I was not present for the practice matches in
Jaipur. However, I think I am not the right person to advise them, but I do tell them to put their
best foot forward and give every team a good
fight.
Besides cricket, you’re also busy with the
movie The Desire - A Journey Of A
Woman, and you’ve been helping your
mother promote it...
Of course, I am, and the movie has won quite a few
awards at various film festivals. It’s an IndoChinese film produced by my mother, starring me,
and I am very proud of it.
Are you taking a complete sabbatical?
Yes, I’m taking a sabbatical from acting for a
while, but work still continues as I just shot for a
few commercials. Also, there are SFL, IPL and my
spa, so there is hardly any time.
Post delivery, when will your fans see you
acting in movies?
As soon as I think the time is right.
Amitabh
Bachchan is
ill again
IANS
WO months after his surgery, mega-star
Amitabh Bachchan is again ill and suffering from “excruciating pain” since
past couple of days.
He is likely to undergo a CT-scan at the Seven
Hill Hospital, Andheri East, in Mumbai, soon,
where he had been operated almost two months
ago.
“Last night…I rose from my desk to get to bed,
but excruciating pain, stopped me in my tracks
and I found it difficult to walk, stand, sit or even
to lie down. Quite horrendous!” he said in a late
night blog entry.
While a pain killer managed to save the day,
Bachchan attempted to bear with the discomfort
for as long as he could.
He admitted that the pain was not there postoperation and he was confounded about the reasons as it recurred two months after the surgery.
“I have no answer. But soon, there should be one
as I prepare for a CT-Scan after devouring a large
bottle or bottles of that yellow fluid…” he said.
Cause of the abdominal pain and when the CTscan will be conducted were not immediately
known.
