REUTERS
ITH The Twilight Saga:
Breaking Dawn, Part 1,
hiring talented filmmaker
Bill Condon (Dreamgirls)
has no doubt resulted in
the best Breaking Dawn, Part 1 that we
were ever going to get. But even with this
craftsman (and horror stylist) at the helm,
we’re still stuck with author Stephenie
Meyer’s ludicrous storytelling and one-note
characters and a principal cast that mistakes
not-blinking for soulful depth.
Not that any of this will matter in the
slightest, of course, to the Twi-hards who
have eagerly drunk the Edward-and-Bella
Kool-Aid; they’re lucky to have a director of
Condon’s caliber seeing the story through to
its climax.
Both climaxes and drinking the Kool-Aid,
incidentally, are on the agenda for Bella
(Kristen Stewart), who begins the film teetering in her first pair of pumps and preparing to tie the knot with her undead paramour Edward (Robert Pattinson).
While wolfboy Jacob (Taylor Lautner),
the other guy who loves Bella, is upset about
the impending nuptials, he nonetheless
makes an appearance to wish her well —
only to get upset over the fact that the newlyweds plan to have sex on their honeymoon
with Bella still in human form, an act that
Jacob thinks will kill her.
Bella and Edward dash off to Brazil and
enjoy one night of bed-breaking bliss, but
when Bella wakes up with bruises, Edward
shies away from a rematch despite Bella’s

pleas. After a metaphor-packed montage of
waterfalls and chess games, she finally gets
her way, only to find herself knocked up
with a bouncing baby bloodsucker within
two weeks.
A vampire fetus in a human womb is
apparently unprecedented, as no one knows
quite what to do with a baby that is literally
sucking the life out of its mother, to the
point where Bella is forced to begin a prenatal nutritional regime that involves Type
O and a straw.
For a series about vampires, Breaking
Dawn, Part 1 feels like the first time that the
visceral aspects are being addressed, so it’s
something of a relief to have Condon, who
began his career with cult horror classics

like Strange Invaders there to carry the film
across that line.
Will Bella survive the birth? Will Edward
resent his child if it kills his beloved wife?
Can Jacob prevent a full-on vampires-vswerewolves war if this mixed-breed child is
born? These and other soapy questions are
answered, with enough cliffhangers to
keep the faithful rabidly awaiting Part 2
next year.
To his credit, Condon takes this risible
material as seriously as possible and makes
the proceedings as stylish and creepy as he
can. There’s a nifty flashback to Edward’s
murderous rampage in the 1930s (complete
with a Bride of Frankenstein shout-out
from the man who made Gods and
Monsters, and just like directors ranging
from Robert Altman to Lars Von Trier,
Condon knows how to get the most out of a
wedding sequence.
The floral canopy will make the young
girls swoon, and the director finds the
notes of genuine romance (when Edward
and Bella kiss, their audience disappears,
leaving them as the only two people on
earth) and humor (the toasts are hilariously awkward).
Pattinson and Stewart have proven themselves to be interesting screen presences in
non-Twilight projects — the jury’s still out
on Lautner — but all three of them remain
in their usual groove of blank-faced mooning about. Some YouTube jokester will
eventually be able to create montages that
are 15 solid minutes of Edward looking
pained, Bella furrowing her brow, Jacob
flaring his nostrils, etc.
Cinematographer Guillermo Navarro
gives the film a palpable lushness, in locations ranging from the forests of the Pacific
Northwest to the beaches of Brazil, that
matches the heroine’s fecundity, and
music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas has
selected a terrific array of pop tunes, even
if some of the lyrics get a little heavy-handed in matching the onscreen action. (While
Bella’s pregnant, there’s some singing
about little arms and little legs, while
another tune crams the ongoing “lion and
the lamb” motif into our ears.)
Based on the squealing adolescent girls
(of all ages) in attendance at the LA press
screening, the brain trust behind the
Twilight golden goose have once again hit
all the right buttons to keep the fans happy.
And even if Bill Condon couldn’t completely
overcome the inanity of the franchise, he
can still proudly hold his head up high at the
Director’s Guild cafeteri.

Wonderful honeymoon for Robin Williams!
I never see myself as style icon: Dannii Minogue
ACTOR Robin Williams has opened up about his honeymoon and says
the romantic break with his new bride was “wonderful”. The 60-yearold married graphic designer Susan Schneider in an intimate ceremony
in St Helena, California on October 23 and the couple flew to Europe
for a vacation following the nuptials. “I was just there (France) for my
honeymoon. It was wonderful... it was lovely, so great to be there,”
contactmusic.com quoted Williams as saying.
AUSTRALIAN singer Dannii Minogue insists she did many fashion mistakes in the
past and that’s why she never considers herself a style icon. “Most of the outfits are
fashion mistakes. I wasn’t born knowing what suits me. You go with trends because
you think it’s ‘in’, so time has been a great thing for me to work out what works,”
femalefirst.co.uk quoted the 40-year-old as saying. “I never see myself as a style
icon. For me, a style icon is someone who’s always got it right. I don’t feel that’s
me. But I’m starting to pull it together and feel more confident with it,” she added.

Hundreds of Orangutans killed annually for meat
Environment
guide
PEOPLE are eating Orangutans to extinction in Indonesia, a new study says. Hundreds of the big apes are hunted
annually for meat or to eliminate threats to crops in the country’s Kalimantan region on the island of Borneo, according
to a survey of 7,000 local villagers. The survey results suggest that between 750 and 1,790 Bornean Orangutans are
killed each year in Kalimantan—” high enough to pose a serious threat to the continued existence of Orangutans in
Kalimantan,” according to the study. There are two distinct species of Orangutan, the Bornean Orangutan and the
Sumatran Orangutan. While both species are considered endangered by the International Union for Conservation of
Nature, the new study deals with only Bornean Orangutans living in Kalimantan. Scientists estimate that if more than
than one percent of female Orangutans in a given population are killed in a year, that population will go extinct—a figure that doesn’t bode well for the Kalimantan apes. Assuming that males and females are killed in equal numbers,
then between 375 and 1,550 female Orangutans—or between 0.9 and 3.6 percent of Kalimantan’s total female
Orangutan population—are killed annually.

T
WO giant panda bears are preparing to
make the long journey from China to a
new home in Scotland. It will be the first
time in nearly 20 years that any zoo in
the UK has had pandas, and it is part of
the program to preserve this critically endangered
species. I was given special access to the Panda
Conservation Centre near Ya’an in Sichuan, where
experts are working to save the bears from extinction. Here’s what I found.
High up in the mountains of Sichuan, Tian Tian
the panda is lying on her side, her chin resting on
one paw, lazily staring into the middle distance.
With one foot she is idly scratching her leg, looking
incredibly relaxed.
Tian Tian’s keepers pass her long fronds of green
bamboo. You can hear her crunching them in her
teeth as she munches her way through the branches.
Her name is perhaps best translated as “Sweetie.”
Life, it has to be said, is pretty easy for Tian Tian.
Born in 2003 in captivity, her home is the China
Conservation and Research Centre for the Giant
Panda on top of a mist-clad mountain at Bifengxia
near Ya’an.
Tian Tian is one of the two pandas about to be
shipped to the Edinburgh Zoo. The hope is that she
will prove a big draw for the zoo when she gets there
with her mate. The zoo believes visitor numbers
will double.
“Our wish is that the two pandas will be happy
and healthy in Britain and produce babies,” says
Wei Ming, the deputy head of Bifengxia’s animal
administration department, a small, rotund man
who clearly has a soft spot for his pandas.
The bears are one of the most endangered species
in the world. They are not much good at reproducing naturally. The female is only fertile for one day
a year, and they are notoriously choosy about who
they pair off with. There’s no guarantee Tian Tian
will warm to her partner.
“They must like each other so that when they
come into season, there’s a mutual attraction –
that’s the key,” Wei explains. “If one is not attracted to the other, they will just walk away from each
other, and nothing will happen.”
In the next-door enclosure is Yang Guang, the
male. He is leaning back against a concrete wall,
with a 6-foot-long piece of bamboo in one paw.
He grips it, chewing on the end and spitting out
the splinters, which pile up on his large, white, furry
stomach. He, too, is looking pretty unconcerned
about anything.
Yang Guang, though, has a bit of a grumpy
streak. When he sees our camera, he gets up
and retreats to his room, where he climbs
onto his bed and lies back, arms folded
on his chest, staring at the ceiling,
refusing to come out.
Adult pandas, you soon realise
when you watch them, don’t
really do very much apart
from chewing bamboo and
snoozing. But that doesn’t

and he has travelled all the
way to Sichuan to see the pandas.
“The preservation of the panda is a
global problem,” he says. “It’s kind of a symbol
of a global problem. We are losing more and more
species, and that has to be tackled on a global basis.”
HABITAT FEARS
The last time there were pandas in the UK was 17
years ago at the London Zoo. Tian Tian and Yang
Guang don’t come cheap. Edinburgh is
going to have to pay about $1
research centres and zoos.
Breeding them in captivity has
proved successful, largely thanks to
the use of artificial insemination. In China, the
numbers have gone up from 200 in captivity three
years ago to 300 today.
But in their natural habitat, the bears are increasingly under pressure. The mountains of Sichuan
where pandas live are picture-perfect: Jagged,
snow-covered peaks and alpine forests clad the hillsides all the way down to blue, glacial lakes.
Jiuzhaigou National Park in northern Sichuan
was created around 30 years ago to help preserve
the panda. The park, with its mountain scenery, has
become one of Sichuan’s most popular tourist
attractions.
Foaming water cascades down waterfalls. A spray
of fine mist hangs in the air in the forests. Groups of
Chinese tourists snap pictures of themselves in
front of the falls.
“Jiuzhaigou is famous in China,” says Yao
Caiyun, one of the visitors. “We’ve always
wanted to come
here.
It’s truly beautiful. It’s like walking inside a picture,
at every turn it is like a painting.”
Despite its remote location, Jiuzhaigou is one of
China’s most popular national parks, drawing 2.5
million visitors a year. Buses ply the roads, ferrying
the tourists from one spot to another.
Crowds gather at the most scenic sites. It’s even
become a favourite location for couples to take wedding photos, so women in ornate wedding dresses
and their smartly dressed husbands-to-be pose in
front of the scenery.
“Nowadays Chinese people are getting richer,
we’re starting to travel,” says Su, another visitor.
“That’s why wherever there’s nice scenery, there are
always lots of people. To find somewhere with no
tourists, you have to climb a mountain; otherwise,
its overcrowded.”
Today, there are no pandas left in Jiuzhaigou.
The bamboo they eat flowered and then died more
than a decade ago. It’s part of the bamboo’s natural
life cycle, but it leaves the pandas vulnerable. Then
visitor numbers to the park surged. The pandas
have died or moved away.
“Pandas are known as the hermits of the forests.
They don’t like noisy places. People might like living in cities, but wild animals prefer quiet, peaceful
places,” professor Yin Kaipu says.
He was the man who suggested Jiuzhaigou
should be made a national park. Now he thinks
development has helped push the pandas out.
“Think about it: If a place is full of tourists, will
pandas continue to exist there? It’s not possible.
The only thing they can do is migrate elsewhere,”
Yin explains.
At Jiuzhaigou, they are trying to change things.
It’s become the first national park in China to promote ecotourism alongside mass tourism.
An Irishman, Kieran Fitzgerald, has been at the
park for three years working on the plan. He’s seen
the speed at which China is developing and how
that effects even remote places like Jiuzhaigou.
“The pace of China’s modernising, the (number)
of car owners, the (number) of self-drive tourists
we’ve seen this year in Jiuzhaigou, in Sichuan,
that pressure puts a big strain on the environment,” he says.
Fitzgerald’s aim is now to encourage more sustainable use of the park and to try to educate visitors about the importance of preserving China’s
wild places. So he has opened up more remote valleys to small groups on walking and camping tours.
This year, there have been 400 visitors who have
taken the ecotours.
“It’s going to take more time before people see the
value of protecting these still pristine areas, which
are habitats to all these endangered species, like the
pandas,” Fitzgerald says.
In the meantime, the constant expansion of
China’s roads and railways, its towns and cities,
means the pandas’ existing habitats are being
carved up into smaller and more isolated pockets.
That’s a problem because it makes it even
harder for the bears to intermingle and breed. In
the long term, it means the only
viable population left may be the
one in captivity.

Travelling on a shoestring budget
HOLIDAYS need not be always an expensive affair. You can still have a nice enjoyable holiday even if you have limited
money to spend. If the purse strings are a little tight at present, here’s a few tips on how to get the best deal when it comes
to planning a budget holiday: Book very early or very late. Tickets for everything - from airplane seats to hotels - are at their
most expensive two to three months before the date you want to stay. To maximise the chances of getting a bargain, look to
book early - up to six months in advance wherever possible - or late. Being an early bird will help you in getting the best
deals. Do your research thoroughly. Talk to friends, colleagues if they had visited the places. You might get a deal that’s a
steal. Travelling within the budget might not give you everything on a platter. But sometimes in life, less is more. And
there’s more fun in trying out different combinations and options. Don’t expect everything to be easy. For complete luxury,
everything is provided and gets simple when money does all the talking. Lowering your expectations will allow you to plan a
budget holiday effectively. Be flexible and that will make lots of things easier for you. Be an explorer and your experiences
will be worth a lifetime.

A winter getaway in Moscow
RICK LYMAN
NYT SYNDICATE
OSCOW, in the grip of the
cold, is not everyone’s idea
of a perfect vacation. It is a
difficult city in general
especially for pedestrians,
and anyone put off by pushy crowds.
Winter just makes it worse. People are
bundled up in furry cocoons. The sidewalks are largely uncleared. Still, it takes
only a few hours to realise that presentday Moscow is also alive and energised, a
city in the giddy grip of really enjoying
itself.
It would be a stretch to say that
Muscovites embrace the winter, but they
come as close as human beings are able to
outside a ski resort. Snow piles atop snow
piles. Life marches on. Restaurants are
full. Sidewalks are crowded. Theatres and
opera houses are packed. Parks are crisscrossed by people on ice skates along with
those who are simply taking a leisurely
stroll as though at the height of spring.
And there is one real plus to coming
in the lowest of the low season. The
main tourist sites – the museums,
the cathedrals, the tourist markets –
are uncrowded and relaxed. No long
queues for tickets, even at the
Hermitage in St Petersburg. No
waiting in line, behind a thick
crowd, for a quick glimpse of
Catherine the Great’s coronation
dress.
The central part of the vast,
sprawling city is defined by
semicircular ring roads that
arch around the Kremlin –
the city’s heart – like crescent moons. The road just
outside the National curves
around the Kremlin and
the old, adjoining Kitaygorod district. About a half
mile up Tverskaya, at
Pushkin Square, you hit
the Boulevard Ring, and
M
another half mile or more beyond, at the
Tchaikovsky Concert Hall, the Garden
Ring. Within those bands lie most of the
city’s tourist destinations, top restaurants, major hotels and most popular
Theatres. It’s a vast area, though. The
map says it’s 2,500 yards from the
Kremlin to the Garden Ring along
Tverskaya, although with winter’s chill
and the clotted subterranean pedestrian
tunnels, it feels a lot longer.
You enter Red Square through the
Resurrection Gate, a pair of archways
torn down during Stalin’s time but rebuilt
in 1996. The gate perfectly frames the vast
expanse, with the colourful onion domes
of St Basil’s Cathedral in the near distance.
This heart of Moscow, in crisp winter
air that seems to make the spotlights on
the Kremlin towers shine with a hard
clarity, is splendidly beautiful at night.
While there are still drab boulevards and
forbidding side streets, the main squares
and thoroughfares are aglow with illuminated onion domes, commercial billboards and bright red stars still burning
above the Kremlin’s towers.
But most astonishing was the sprawling
ice-skating rink decorated with kiddie
cartoons and balloon shapes that takes up
a giant chunk of the square, smack
between GUM’s central door and Lenin’s
mausoleum. It was well into the evening
on a very cold night, but there were still
more than a hundred people making their
way around the rink, mostly families with
squealing children, and middle-aged couples keeping a tight grip on each other.
We passed by the ice rink several times
during our week in Moscow. There was
never a line and it was rarely crowded,
but there were always at least a few
families with children taking tentative laps in the shadow of the
Kremlin walls.
There were a few people walking
through the frozen gardens on the
Kremlin’s north side, past the sombre Tomb of the Unknown Soldier,
with its guards standing to attention
inside glass booths safe from the elements, and up to the Old Arbat district.
The Georgian restaurant, Genatsvale VIP,
was a kind of theme-park affair dressed
up to look like an old mill, with spinning
wheels, log walls and a roaming accordion player.
Communication was difficult. The waitress, dressed in a sexy version of Georgian
folk costume, offered little help. So my
wife and I opted for the famous Georgian
dishes we’d read about, a delicious chicken satsivi (cold chunks of white meat in a
walnut sauce), some khachapuri (cheesestuffed bread) and an assortment of
grilled, skewered meats. It was very good.
But other tables seemed to be having
much grander, happier feasts – huge platters of meats and salads and toast after
toast, sometimes with the kitchen staff
scurrying out to serenade everyone.
The next morning we walked along the
Kremlin. It was a lonely exercise, watched
only by a handful of grim-faced guards in
long wool coats, icy plumes of breath
shooting from between compressed lips.
In the fortress’s historic, central square, a
few seconds of orientation were needed to
distinguish the Cathedral of the
Archangel from the Cathedral of
the Assumption from the
Cathedral of the Annunciation.
In the early evening, we made
our trek over to the Red October
Chocolate Factory, a complex of
art galleries and bars on an
island in the river. The hope
was to get a glance at
Moscow’s trendy side, but we
apparently arrived too early,
and made do with a couple
of ridiculously expensive
cocktails at a place near
the huge, kitschy statue of Peter the Great
atop a tall-masted
ship.
Once upon
a time, the
train trip to St. Petersburg was, for most
tourists, an overnight one. Those trains
still exist and have their nostalgic adherents. But since 2009, with the inauguration of the high-speed Sapsan train, the
trip can be made in four hours, making
Peter the Great’s former capital an easy
hit for travellers willing to fork over the
$200 round trip. In a day and a half we
were able to devote five hours to the
Hermitage, have a terrific Indian meal at
Tandoor, and spend a couple of hours
meandering around the massive Gostiny
Dvor department store on Nevsky
Prospekt, all decked out for the holidays –
without rushing or breaking a sweat.
Back in Moscow, desperate to buy some
gifts before flying back to New York, we
spent a bitterly cold Saturday picking our
way through the sprawling Izmailovo flea
market on the edge of that park. The
crowds were thick, despite the weather.
It’s a standard stop on the tourist circuit,
the place to go for antiques, memorabilia
from the Soviet era, fur hats and hundreds upon hundreds of painted wooden
nesting dolls.
Despite the temperatures, from midDecember to mid-January it’s bustling
with tobogganing, troika rides, folk arts,
musical events, souvenir stalls, ice skating
and dozens of images of Ded Moroz, or
Grandfather Frost, the Russian version of
Santa Claus, and his sidekick, the svelte
Snegurochka, the snow maiden.
The idea is to get something authentically Russian, a bit of folk art perhaps, or
a shard from history; certain stalls featured the flotsam from Russia’s past – old
silver samovars, platters commemorating
the latest Soviet congress, patriotic
posters glorifying angry workers and
happy cosmonauts.
GETTING AROUND
The key thing about visiting Moscow
is to acquaint yourself early with the city’s
amazing metro system. It can be crowded
and brusque, but some of the stations are
spectacularly beautiful, and it can take
you to within walking distance of almost
every major attraction. Tickets are 28
rubles (about 90 cents at 30 rubles to the
dollar) for a single ride or 265 rubles ($9)
for a 10-ride ticket.
In St Petersburg, most main sites are
within easy walking distance, although
it’s a long walk if you intend to venture
across the Neva River to pay your respects
at the grave of Peter the Great.
WHERE TO STAY
As far as location goes, it’s hard to beat
the historic Hotel National at the foot of
Tverskaya Street, Moscow’s main thoroughfare. If Stalin is your preference, you
could also check out the Radisson Royal
Hotel, on the Moscow River at
Kutuzovsky Prospekt. It is inside one of
the seven gothic skyscrapers Stalin built
around the city. In St. Petersburg, the
Renaissance Baltic Hotel is on a side
street near St Isaac’s Cathedral and the
Winter Palace, but just far enough off
bustling Nevsky Prospekt to be calm and
restful.
WHERE TO EAT
Moscow now offers an array of dining
choices, from trendy bistros to fast-food
chains. Cafe Pushkin was instantly the
city’s finest restaurant when it opened in
1999 in a Baroque mansion on the
Boulevard Ring. While other restaurants
may have eclipsed it in culinary terms, it
is still a spectacularly beautiful place to
have a meal, especially during the holidays. For a more countrified atmosphere,
and spicier Georgian cuisine, there is
Genatsvale VIP, just off the Arbat pedestrian mall. St Petersburg has a wide variety of dining choices. We had an excellent
Indian meal at Tandoor, across from the
Admiralty Building.

Lindsay Lohan impresses officials with hard work?
TROUBLED actress Lindsay Lohan has been hailed as “polite and
hardworking” by law-enforcement officials. The 25-year-old is serving her community service and has completed 10 of 12 morgue
duty shifts at the Los Angeles county morgue with three weeks to
go until she appears in court for a status hearing on December 14.
Law enforcement officers are happy with her behaviour and say
that the actress has earned a “good reputation” at the morgue as
she is “polite, hardworking and never complains”, reports tmz.com.
Lindsay is working at the morgue as part of her sentence for
breaching the terms of probation which was set following a 2007
driving under the influence charge.
HOLLYWOOD action hero Arnold Schwarzenegger may be 64
years old, but he refuses to use stuntmen and insists on doing
his own stunts. Arnold has been filming Last Stand in New
Mexico for nearly two months. Arnold has politely declined the
producers’ offer to put stuntmen in the dangerous scenes,
because he thinks it’s just more believable for him to do it himself. In the film, he’s seen driving a Camaro, dragging a “bad
guy behind” — even though the scene involves crazy driving, it
seems the bad guy is the one who needs a double.

Jessica Biel has ‘power’ in
her relationship with Justin
IANS
ESSICA Biel now has ‘the
power’ in her newly rekindled relationship with Justin
Timberlake, according to friends
of the couple.
The stunning actress reconciled
with the In Time star earlier this
year after a brief split and now
friends insist that she has the
upper hand and he would even
consider marriage if that’s what
she wanted.
“Justin thinks marriage would
hurt his career, but if Jessica
threatened to leave, he’d do it. She
now has the power in the relationship,” a friend close to the
couple told a magazine recently.
However, the actor need not
worry about getting married for
now as Biel, recently revealed
that she was in no hurry to settle
down.
On being asked if she would
like to get married and have
children, the brunette beauty
had said ‘of course’ but added
that ‘I don’t feel pressured’.
“Sure, of course. And, yeah, I
think probably at some point it
would be something I’m interested in. But I don’t feel pressured.
“I was never one of those
girls who dreamt of my wedding and my Prince Charming.
To upset my mom, I used to
say, ‘I’m never having kids,
and I’m going to be a fabulously rich old lady living in a
house with cute butlers and
dogs,’” she added.

HE Dark Knight Rises may
be Christian Bale’s final performance as crime-fighting

the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
Set for release in July, the movie
is Bale’s third stint as Gotham’s
Caped Crusader for director
Christopher Nolan, after Batman
Begins (2005) and The Dark Knight
(2008).
“I wrapped a few days ago, so that
will be the last time I’m taking that
cowl off,” Bale told the newspaper
during an interview in Beverly Hills.
“I believe that the whole production
wrapped up yesterday, so it’s all
done. Everything’s finished. It’s me
and Chris — that will be the end of
that Batman era.”
The 37-year-old actor’s comments, published late last week,
weren’t his first indication that he
might have reached the end of the
Batmobile ride. Bale told E! News in
November one year ago that “unless
Chris says different, this will be the
last time I’m playing Batman.”

I am not an aggressive or violent
girl: Pooja Missra
Priyanka Chopra believes
in Steve Jobs’ saying
VJ POOJA Missra feels she has been misunderstood and feels
victimised after she was thrown out of Big Boss 5 because of
her “aggressive nature”. “I am not an aggressive or violent girl
but I was forced to be like that. I had to face many harsh
things when I entered the house. Some participants used to
say bad things about me, they used to bang the washroom
doors in front of my face. Some used to shout at me without
any reason. There was so much harassment, so yes, I was
victimised.” she said after leaving the show.
PRIYANKA Chopra (Piggy Chops) loves
what Steve Jobs has said about why he
shone.... because everyone else was so
bad. According to Piggy Chops brilliance
requires arrogance. And only if you believe
in yourself will the world believe in you.
“You can spice up confidence with humility and humour.”

HE is often called a

Which is why it came
as a surprise when it
was revealed that
Anushka
Sharma
would not be part of the production house’s venture, Habib
Faisal’s Ishaqzaade, and that
the role went to Priyanka
Chopra’s
cousin,
Parineeti, instead.
In fact, according to
the B-town buzz,
Anushka
wasn’t
given the part
because she was
considered too loud
for the role. “This is
another rubbish report.
This film was supposed
to be made with newcomers (Boney Kapoor’s son
Arjun will also make his debut
in this film) and I am no longer
one,” says Anushka, adding, “I
have known Parineeti for some
time as she was on Aditya
Chopra’s marketing team and
wanted to become an actor. I
believe she is good for the role.”
However, Anushka is doing
the sequel to Veer-Zaara, which
will see her share screen space
with Shah Rukh Khan and
Katrina Kaif. What’s more, the
film will mark Yash Chopra’s
return to direction after seven
years. “It is a great honour to be
in a Yash Chopra film and this
film is the high point of my
career. I look forward to sharing
screen space with Shah Rukh
and Katrina,” says Anushka.

Shiney hopes
to shine again
with Ghost

Meanwhile, the Band Baaja
Baaraat (BBB) actor, who is
teaming up again with her ex
Ranveer Singh in Ladies vs
Ricky Bahl, confesses she is
keen to act with him again.
“Why not, if we get a challenging
script?” she asks, adding, “It was
the same team as the one that
worked on BBB and we all had a
great time on the sets, but this
film is very different from that
one.” Anushka will also make a
departure from the bubbly roles
she has played so far, with
Vishal Bhardwaj’s Matru Ki
Bijlee Ka Mandola opposite
Imran Khan. “But contrary to
what is being reported, I am not
playing a pyscho chick in the
film - it’s the role of a girl who is
not so normal,” she says.
And while reports about her
on-off relationship with co-star
Ranveer, Anushka maintains
she is single. “I have no love life
at the moment. In fact, I am
completely single and lonely,”
she says.
FTER wading through troubled times,
actor Shiney Ahuja is back in fray with his
latest film Ghost and says that his new film
has some similarity with his horror-thriller
Bhool Bhulaiyaa. “The story of Ghost is
totally different from Bhool Bhulaiyaa but
in a way it is a similar film. Although it’s a horror film, it’s
a very good love story. Bhool Bhulaiyaa had a thriller element but it was essentially a love story. Similarly, this is
a very nice love story,” Shiney said at a party held for
Ghost.
Shiney’s career hit a rough patch when in 2009 his
maid accused him of raping her. On March 30, 2011,
Shiney was sentenced to seven years in prison. He is currently out on bail.
Now the 37-year-old has his hopes pinned on Ghost to
resurrect his career. He has teamed up with Sayali Bhagat
in the film, which releases on December 16.
“Only God knows what will happen after this film. But
I hope that from spotboys to producers, all those who
have worked on this film would be benefited,” Shiney
said.
His career was on the right track after a promising
debut with Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi in 2005 for which
he also bagged the Filmfare Award for best male debut.
Then he was seen in Gangster - A Love Story, Woh
Lamhe, Life in a...Metro, and Khoya Khoya Chand.
Shiney is also part of Jahnu Barua’s Har Pal, which
features Preity Zinta, Issha Koppikar and Dharmendra,
but the film has been in a limbo ever since the actor’s rape
trial started. It went on floors in 2007, but is yet to see the
light of the day.
