Copyright © J. It was only after Miss Collins went on a morning neighborhood patrol that she found out the real reason for Matt’s tardiness. Thump, thump, thump, came the wheelchair down the stairs. It was Matt, steadying Shawnetta as he helped lower her down the stairs and then push her to the corner bus stop. “She’s a girl in my parish youth group,” Matt explained to Miss Collins. There are many ways to describe Matt’s actions—a random act of kindness, making a difference one person at a time. Jesus would understand. When the lawyer correctly identified the good Samaritan as the one who had treated the injured man with compassion, Jesus said simply, “Go and do likewise” (Luke 10:37). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Works of Mercy - Burying the Dead: In our Catholic tradition, we take seriously the seventh Corporal Work of Mercy Burying the dead. A well-planned funeral service does many things: it gives honor to the person who died; it gives the opportunity for the family to come together, to grieve, celebrate and pray together, and it expresses our faith in the life to come. What does the Catholic funeral service entail? How does one go about the important work of planning such a service? What, and how, can one prepare beforehand? What does it cost? In response to the request of some of our parishioners for more information on these topics, we are planning a workshop for the afternoon of Sunday, July 24, 1:30-4:30 pm at Sacred Heart Hall, entitled “A Work of Mercy: Burying the Dead”. Fr. Paul will give a presentation on the religious and spiritual aspects of the Catholic funeral service, and representatives of our local mortuaries will be invited to explain the services they offer. More information to come; mark the date! This is for everyone. Sacrament of the Sick: Are you about to undergo some medical procedure, or receive a diagnosis for a physical problem of some kind? Our church has a beautiful sacrament - the Sacrament of the Sick - meant to provide strength and healing of body, mind and spirit. Our priests are available to administer this sacrament; you may stop by the office (call first!) or catch them after one of our liturgies. This sacrament is beautifully explained in Chapter 18 of the U.S. Catholic Catechism. Visits to Homebound - We would like to be aware of those who are ill and in need of pastoral visits, whether the person is in a hospital or at home and unable to come to church. You are the eyes and ears of our Church; please let us know so that we can respond. Teen ACTS Retreat: …takes place July 21-24. Registration forms are available at each church. The retreat is open to all youth who have completed 9th-12th grades in 2016. Please call Adult Directors Robert and Martha Jo Guerra for more information - (263-1499, 263-1928); or teen directors Abe Ascencio (445-6208) or Norma Colchado (361-772-2723) Credit Card Payments: Our parish office is set up to receive donations, mass stipends, rental fees, and other payments by credit card for your convenience. All major credit cards are accepted. Visits to Homebound - We would like to be aware of those who are ill and in need of pastoral visits, whether the person is in a hospital or at home and unable to come to church. You are the eyes and ears of our Church; please let us know so that we can respond.
