3 Kat Chatter Wednesday, August 26, 2015 Thought for the day “Playing time is not about what others think, rather what you earn practice by practice, game by game; Make it obvious!” Mike Ditka Today’s Athletic Events SPORT OPPONENT Soccer (Boys JV) Northwestern Volleyball (Girls Fr) Harrison LOCATION TIME Northwestern KHS 5:00 PM 6:00 PM THE WILDKAT Boys Soccer Kokomo 11, Peru 1 Girls Soccer Marion 8, Kokomo 0 Girls Golf Tipton 178, Kokomo 202 Nervous and anxious, scattered and collective, executing and hesitant, distracted and focused. A lot of ranges can be used to show where our focus is for an event, but last night our Lady Kats found themselves stuck somewhere in the middle of all those ranges. Striving to stand strong in any one of them as Marion dominated an 8-0 victory, Catherine Skaggs recorded eight saves. At times we tend to be our own worst critics and get in our own heads; that’s just what we did. Our Lady Kats felt the constant pressure of the Marion Giants and never could get themselves refocused and centered. We struggled hard to stick to our game plan even out of pressure. And just when you thought the Kats had lost all focus, new life showed in the second half. Feeling they had nothing to lose, after a 6-0 first half, some pressure lifted from their own minds and freedom was in sight. The Lady Kats had a much stronger second half. Though too tired from running themselves to death in the first half, the Kats fought until the last minute of play and found themselves hitting the cross bar a few times. Young players and returning players got a reminder of what it’s like to be on that other end of winning last night. With a lot of great notes taken and future practices to come, our Lady Wildkats have some great focus points now to prepare them for the next sectional pair up against Marion later in the season. Coach Duggins The Lady Kats traveled to Tipton for a last minute pickup match. We both had an opening for a match in our schedule and we did not have matching dates except for last night. Tipton won 178-202. This made us have three matches this week due to rescheduling some matches. It was a good thing for Lucy Mavrick. She came out on fire. She had one bad hole, but recovered to shoot a 3-over-par 38. She tied her playing partner from Tipton to become co-medalist. She was followed by Sydney Murphy shooting a 49, Sabrina McAmis shooting a 57, and Mackenzie Smith shooting a 58. Abby Van Horn came in next, shooting a 62. This was her first varsity 9-hole match. Lilly Volikas came in with a 64, and Gracie Worley, playing her first 9 holes in a match, shot a 66. This was the first match that we got to play all the girls and that they got to finish all nine holes. I am seeing a lot of improvement with all the girls. They are hitting the ball a lot better; their scores are just not showing it yet. We will keep practicing hard to keep improving. We travel to Chippendale Golf Course Friday to play Taylor. Start time 3:15. Until next tee time, Coach Carpenter The KHS boys’ soccer team traveled to Peru High School and tallied their second consecutive victory of the season, 11-1. The Kats (2-0-1) dominated play from the opening whistle, allowing only one goal in the opening stanza by the Tigers. The Kats were led by Keagan James’s hat trick and two assists, and Arland McIlrath (2 goals, 1 assist), R.J. Barreira (2 goals, 1 assist), Caleb Cook (1 goal), Robert Lambert (1 goal), Bryceton Welch (1 goal), and Cristian Rebollar (1 goal) rounded out the scoring. The Kats travel to Municipal Stadium tomorrow for a county grudge match versus Northwestern. Tomorrow’s match is at 7:30 pm. Players of the match were Keagan James and Robert Martin. The JV Red Kats drew with the Peru Tigers’ JV team 0-0 in one half, with Jacob Roberts posting the clean sheet in goal. Coach Blessing Indianapolis Arsenal Technical High School will be Kokomo’s football opponent Friday night. Although Tech is currently a member of the North Central Conference, Friday’s game with the Titans is designated non-conference. Tech was an original member of the NCC, dating back to 1926, but parted ways with the league when the Indianapolis Public Schools expected the Titans to play a full city schedule in 1961. Indianapolis Arsenal Technical is located in downtown Indianapolis between 10 th Street and E. Michigan Street, just south of I-70. Tech’s address is 1500 E. Michigan Street. The school, according to Wikipedia, consists of a 76-acre, multiple building campus. Tech was originally a U.S. Civil War Arsenal, which was closed after the Spanish–American War. Arsenal Technical is the oldest military installation in central Indiana and the oldest high school in the city at the same location. Tech plays their football games in Howard Longshore Stadium. It includes a running track which circumscribes it, as well as concrete bleachers on each side. It was resurfaced with FieldTurf after the 2012 Super Bowl. The stadium was originally constructed during the Great Depression using New Deal funds. The school colors for Tech are Green, White, and Red. Tech was in Class 6A in football with over 2100 students last year. The Titans are now in Class 5A. Some of the notable alumni of Arsenal Tech are former NFL player Enoch Demar, basketball players Frank Baird, Leroy Edwards, Mike Price, Jim Price, Joe Sexton (Mr. Basketball 1952), and Trey Lyles (Mr. Basketball 2014), professional bowler Dick Weber, and celebrities Mike Epps, Durwood Kirby (co-host of Candid Camera), Jay Stewart (announcer, Let’s Make a Deal), Peter Lupus (TV version of Mission Impossible), Bill Peet (Disney animator), Howard Aiken (A Father of the Computer Age with IBM’s Harvard Mark I), and Howard Garns (1922), creator of the Sudoku numbers puzzle. .
