SEASON PREVIEW – GIRLS SWIMMING Keep an eye on our Lady Katfish this season. Exciting things are happening at the pool. Our girls are working very hard. We are a very young team with 15 underclassmen this season. We will be led by our four returning seniors, Autumn Carroll, Katie Harbaugh, Amy Laubenstein, and Ashley Clifford. A newcomer, senior Kristen Erny, has helped to add great leadership to our team. Our underclassmen are letting every lady know they are here to compete and want many of the open spots left by our graduating seniors from last season. As we head into our first meet against Western I am not sure yet where everyone will fit into our lineup. Not only are these ladies working hard, they are all very coachable and making a commitment to each other. These are great gals and I am very lucky to get to spend this season with them. Freshmen Morgan Reecer will definitely make an impact this season. She will likely fill the distance spots in the lineup. She is backed by Hayden Phipps, Brittany Lucas, and Emily Ogle. We will try these ladies in various spots to find where they best fit in to help garner points for the ladies. Our sophomores will be led by returning veterans Jessica Estep, Brooke Dill, Ann Stahl, Hannah Sexton, Aditi Sood, Lucy Mavrick, and Abbie O’Keefe. Joining the sophomore veterans this season are newcomer Osha Hall who will definitely make an impact as our only diver this season. Swimming their first varsity season as sophomores are Naomi Leuck, Emily Hafley, and Britney Achors. Our sophomore class brings a lot of offseason training and we will look to them to fill some high point earning spots in our lineup. All of our juniors saw conference and sectional action last season so they are ready to hit the water with a splash. We are very excited to have Briana Ebenhart, Abigail Hammel, and Micah Jackson back this season. Two of these gals have pretty definite lineup spots. We will look to Briana to backstroke and Abigail to butterfly this season. Micah will get to fill freestyle spots. Harbaugh and Carroll can swim anything on the roster. These gals have shown great versatility and leadership for four years with our program. I can count on them to swim anything and gain points for the team. They will be supported by breaststroker Laubenstein, Erny, and Clifford. I am thankful to add freshman Chardonnay Clark as our manager. Chardonnay is willing to assist in any way she can and is learning the ropes in the pool quite quickly. We also have Ms. Hicks helping us when she can. She will be a blessing to have around. Our diving coach expert, Amanda Huston, will lead our only diver, Hall, this season as she prepares her six and 11 dive lists for competition. Keep an eye on our ladies and watch for BIG time drops this season! Come watch us in our opening meet against Western, Tuesday Nov 18th at 5:30pm. This year's team is returning three starters from a season ago that finished 11-9 in Gabrielle Smith, Allie Lowe, and Kaila Stiner. Allie, Gabby, and Kaila are ready to step up to the challenge and lead this group. The best thing about having those three guiding this group is their hard work, competitiveness, and willingness to do whatever needs to be done for us to be a better team. Our coaching staff has been impressed with the work ethic and leadership this group has shown throughout the summer and preseason workouts. Not only do we have those great returning players, we have a core group of upperclassmen that are ready for their opportunity to compete at the varsity level. Our senior class consists of Mykayla Fowler, Meghan Pier, and Smith. Mykayla, along with juniors Olivia Wilson, Sieara Langley, Lowe, and Emily Bailey, provide depth and size at our forward and post positions. With such great depth inside, we will be able to create mismatches on both the offensive and defensive ends. If we can get the ball inside and shoot high percentage shots with this group, we have a chance to reach some of our goals. This group inside has to take ownership of rebounding the basketball and not allowing our opponents to get offensive rebounds. On the perimeter, we have a nice variety of size, speed, and skill. Our seniors on the perimeter, Meghan and Gabby, along with juniors Kaila, Sarah Tickfer, Q. Merriweather and sophomore Jayda Andrews will set the tone for this team. Pushing the ball in transition, having great positive energy, and valuing each possession with a low number of turnovers will be key to our success with this group of guards. We are looking for both groups of posts and guards to really dictate the tempo on the defensive end. We believe that with this team we have the opportunity to do some special things this season. We are also very excited about our JV team. Right now we have a talented freshmen group along with some up-and-coming sophomores that are going to contribute greatly. Having such a large group of underclassmen learning, getting to know the system, and gaining valuable experience is going to provide a great future for this program. The JV team consists of sophomores Tanae Stigger, Deanna Bartholamew, and Aubrion Woodard, and the freshmen are Brittany Barnard, Madison Wood, Tevin Deckard, Kylee Lauderbaugh, and Savannah Emmons. This is a fun and coachable group to be around. They have been practicing extremely hard while at the same time learning a new offensive and defensive system. This group continues to get better each day and excited to begin this season. We are looking forward to continuing to build on the already great Lady Kat basketball tradition this season. As a whole, this is a great group of young ladies that are fun to be around, positive role models for the community, and have a bright future ahead of them. The Lady Kats play their first road game of the season tomorrow, traveling to North Central. Kokomo was 11-9 a year ago, while Northwestern was 10-10. This will be the 35th meeting between the two schools with Kokomo holding a 29-5 advantage in the series, which dates back to 1974-75. The Lady Kats have won the last two matchups and 22 of the last 23. Northwestern won the first three games in the series, but have lost 29 of the last 31. The Tigers lone win since 1984 came at Northwestern on November 12, 2011, when Coach Todd Miller’s Tigers won by four, 44-40. Kokomo’s roster shows three seniors, seven juniors, and a sophomore. Northwestern is even younger with two seniors, five juniors, three sophomores, and three frosh. The 2014 Lady Kats graduating class of Haleigh Parrish, Cierra Tinder, Schnetavia Williams, Alanis Jones, Iesha Wallace, and Jasmine Love accounted for 64% of last year’s scoring and 45% of the rebounds. Last season, Kokomo shot 34.1% from the field, 28.7% from three-land, and 54.1% from the line. Northwestern’s comparable numbers: 34.3%, FG; 26.9%, 3-point; 55.2, FT%. Kokomo returns three girls who played against Northwestern last season, and all three of them started against the Lady Tigers. Kaila Stiner, Allie Love, and Gabrielle Smith combined for seven points and 13 rebounds in the Kats 51-41 victory. Northwestern has four girls who played in last season’s game against the Kats, two of them starters. Sophia Beachy, Sydney Zeck, Beza Townsend, and Brooke Treadway all saw action in the season opener with Zeck and Treadway getting opening nods. Treadway had a monster game against Kokomo with 13 points and 17 rebounds. Brooke Treadway (12.2) and Sydney Zeck (9.3) were 1-2 in scoring last year for the Tigers. Both teams struggled in last year’s season opener. They combined for 71 turnovers (38 of them by Northwestern) and shot just 31.6% from the field. The Lady Kats were 5-3 in home games a year ago. Gabrielle Smith led Kokomo in assists (57), steals (47) and free throw shooting (68%) in 2013-14. Allie Lowe was last season’s leading rebounder at 7.1 points per game. Heather Mygrant will make her head coaching debut tonight. The 1999 KHS grad, then Heather Cusick, is the third all-time leading scorer for the Lady Kats and second in both assists and steals and was co-MVP (along with Tia Davis) in both ’98 and ‘99. The former Indiana All-Star matriculated at Miami University, where she became the first women’s player in the MidAmerican Conference history to have over 1700 points, 500 assists, 400 rebounds, 300 steals, and 200 three-point field goals. She was named to the Miami University’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013 and is one of two women to have had their number retired. She played in all 116 games in her college career, starting 113 of them. Mygrant, a counselor at KHS, has also worked as the operations manager for the Southern Ohio PGA, the director of basketball operations at Ball State, and as the director of basketball operations and graduate assistant coach at the University of Nevada. Her resume also includes time as a professional player in the Netherlands. Heather’s husband, Michael, is also a former Wildkat athlete. Kathie Layden is in her third season at Northwestern and has a 21-20 record with the Tigers. She has also coached at Tri-Central and Western and has a 203-120 overall mark in starting her 15th year as a head coach. At Tri-Central, Layden won three IHSAA state championships (2003, 2004, 2005) and was 156-82 in her 10 years there. A three-sport star athlete at Taylor High School playing volleyball, basketball, and tennis, she led her Titan hoops team to a 66-15 record. From Taylor, the then-Kathie Wise made her name noteworthy at the University of Evansville, playing 100 games and leaving the Aces’ program as No.5 in steals and No. 9 in assists. Kathie is a fifth grade teacher at Northwestern and is married to Northwestern High School teacher and former Evansville mens’ basketball player Jeff Layden. They have two daughters, Madison and McKenna. Wise, who has never had a losing season, is 0-2 against Kokomo while at Northwestern. Both Heather Mygrant and Kathie Layden are in the Howard County Sports Hall of Fame. The Kokomo-North Central matchup on Saturday will be the 22nd in the series with the Lady Kats holding a 12-9 lead. North Central has won the last two contests with Kokomo and has been victorious in four of the last six. Dee Ann Ramey is the head girls basketball coach at North Central, where she is 46-21 in her four years and led the Lady Panthers to a state championship in 2012. She has an overall record of 126-81 in her 11 seasons. The Lady Panthers were 11-8 a year ago. North Central was 7-4 in games at home a year ago. Kokomo was 5-5 on the road. North Central opens their season tonight at Mooresville.
