Many think he is an angel who watches over us and keeps us safe. He helps us when we go on a trip, starting with a T-CLOCS Inspection of our bike or trike. He can also help us pack for our trip with a list of suggested things to bring. He helps us pick the right route for the weather conditions and our riding ability. He teaches us all about wearing All The Gear, All The Time. "Rider Ed" has taught us how to ride our machine and how to really enjoy this experience, knowing that we have learned many riding skills and practice them often. We can truly ride with Pride and Confidence, thanks to "Rider Ed". We always rely on his experience and expertise. He will never "Steer Us Wrong". "Rider Ed" is always invited to join us on every ride we take, alone or with a group. He will join you whether you drive 2, 3, or 4 wheels. He can also help you learn about CPR and First Aid. This training can be used both among GWRRA friends and for your own family. Those that learn it are a true asset, showing by action that they care to help others. "Rider Ed" was a Boy Scout and his motto, "Be Prepared" can make any ride more enjoyable. He always carries his First Aid kit while on the road. How do we know who is a friend of Rider Ed? They proudly wear his or her Level patches with pride so you know they have made the commitment to ride as safely as possible, constantly improving or refreshing their riding or coriding skills, always remaining current in their training, and helping others to see how they can "Share the Road" with everybody. "Rider Ed" is one of the greatest benefits included with your Membership in GWRRA. He is also a "saver." He might be able to "save" you some money on your insurance with an ARC or ERC Course Completion Card. For sure, he can "save" your bacon. Please introduce "Rider Ed" to all of your friends in GWRRA. Get them enrolled in the Levels Program. Help set their sights on becoming a Master Tour Rider (Lever IV). Also, become a name dropper. Mention "Rider Ed" often in your conversations with other motorcyclists. "Rider Ed" is a big part of the 'gift of GWRRA". We can share with others. "Rider Ed" doesn't let Friends learn "by accident!" He truly can save our lives or theirs. But, please don't confuse him with "Mr. Ed" - he's a horse of course!! Gold Wing Road Riders Association Page 4 GWRRA - National News REGION E - Wing Ding Information from Wingin’ It submitted by: Roger Losornio, Senior Event Team Manager Wing Ding Event Team Many people want to know who makes up the Event Team with the blue shirts we see working at the Wing Ding every year. We are GWRRA Volunteer Members that take time away from our jobs and family every year to work at the Wing Ding. Our Event Team arrives four-days before Wing Ding and we come from AR, AZ, KS, MO, OH, OK, TN, VA, and WI. A normal work day during the Wing Ding is from 7:00 a.m. till 7:00 p.m. in all types of weather. Here is a list of our Team Members; Roger Losornio, Ernie & Linda Black, Renee Thomas, Jack & Teresa Kistler, Earl & Joyce Fulcer, Mike & Debbie Maynor, Jerry & Becky Hodges, John Bennefield, Mike Mitchell and Roger & Penny Hurley. Day one: Our Event Team arrives and has a meeting in the evening with KKT the Wing Ding coordinator for GWRRA to go over the setup of the trade show, security, and the logistics of where everything is located and where we are to store all of the supplies. Day two: We start unloading the 53' tractor trailer truck that has arrived from Phoenix with all of the supplies for the Wing Ding. We move the Official Product booth items to the vendor area, rider education equipment to the vendor area, ticket barrels to registration, setup the on-site registration, setup the pre-site registration area, setup the poker run area, setup the GWRRA recruiting booth, setup ticketing & the sales areas, move top gun material to show office for pickup, count preregistration rally shirts, move raffle items to raffle vendor area, hang all of the vendors banners, move bike show equipment and plaques to show office for pick up and all the other items that are needed for the Wing Ding. Day three: We start setting up the trade show area. All vendors have to check in before they can move into vendor area. We start letting the big semi-rigs into the trade show area from 8:00 a.m. to noon. They know ahead of time who they are. After that, we start letting in the rest of the vendors into the vendor area for setup. Day four: We continue checking in the vendors and let them move in the vendor area to set up. Our role is continual and we are there to serve our Members and vendors to make sure Wing Ding is a great experience for everyone. We ask for the Members to stay out of the vendor area for safety and insurance reasons during setup. Our vendors hand out service passes after the trade show opens in order to schedule times for having their motorcycle/trike/trailer, etc. worked on. Our vendors schedule their own appointments. As with any other appointments, the vendor may get behind because of problems with other motorcycles/trike/trailers, etc. or others times they may have overbooked. We can only allow the allotted number of motorcycles/ trike/trailers, etc. into their area. This is due to Fire Marshal regulations and facility insurance issues, as well as the general safety of our Members and vendors. We hope knowing this will help our Members understand why we can't let them in until the vendor area until they have room for another job. The local fire marshal prohibits having anything parked in the aisles. On the last day of the event we go around and pick up all of the items that we unloaded from the truck, pack them and load back on the truck. We all leave on the next day and head home. (Ed. Note: Please try and thank each Member of the Event Team (blue shirts) while you are at Wing Ding to appreciate all they do for our Members, Vendors and guests who always have a great time at GWRRA's biggest party of the year!) This is why Region E “Makes a Difference.” Bob & Diane Phelps Region E Assistant Directors Planning Your Riding Season Excerpt from Article Written by Lance & Diane Brozek, Region E Assistant Directors ... now is the time to plan your riding season. Sit down with the person you live with and decide what rallies, events, and vacation spots you want to attend this riding season. First make reservations for hotel, motel, campsite, or relative’s extra bedroom for the time frame that the event is going on. Next, fill out preregistration forms and mail, email, or fax the forms and make copies of everything and take them with you. This will save standing at the front desk, registration table, check-in site and saying, “I know we sent it.” Lance & Diane Brozek Region E Assistant Directors GWRRA – Region E Page 6 Region E News Becoming a Rider Coach for GWRRA Excerpt of Article Written by Jerry & Sue Allhands, Region E Rider Educators Sue & Jerry Allhands Region E Rider Educators ... The first thing that we need is volunteers who are interested or think they would like to become a Rider Coach. There are two methods or approaches. The first is for a member who is certified as a Rider Coach with a different organization such as MFS. These folks are already trained on how to give a course so it takes less time and money to certify them in GWRRA. It is a two day course with the first day learning the range and class room. The second day is teaching a Rider Course for certification in that particular course such as Trike, ARC, or Trailer. The second method is for those who have never been trained as a Rider Coach. This is a 50 hour course that first includes training as a presenter. The second part is learning how to lay out the range and practice their riding skills before taking the skills riding test. Once that has been successfully completed, they will move into a class room to learn how to present the class room portion and related papers. This takes about forty hours or four days. The fourth day is conducting a rider course in one of the four categories that GWRRA offers such as Trike, ARC, or Trailer and Side Car. Requirements for all Rider Coach Candidates are you must be current as a Level III minimum and willing to advance to Level IV, have a valid driver’s license with no more than four points on their driver’s license, no DUI convictions, be a GWRRA member in good standing, and demonstrate safe riding habits by always wearing proper riding gear. For more information you can contact your District or Region Educator. We are looking for the best of the best. I would not be doing my job if I didn’t say that not everyone will make it. But if you have the desire and are willing to work hard, we need your help. Please ride safe. Region E Rally Aug 7-9 Wisconsin Rapids, WI GWRRA - Region E - Illinois District Page 7 Illinois District News How To Have Fun at a GWRRA Event Written By Steven and Diane Gottschalk, Assistant Director, IL District COY/IOY Coordinators Greetings from Southern Illinois: This month we’d like to touch on how to have fun at a GWRRA event. Our District Director and her Staff put in many hours to ensure our members have a GREAT TIME at our Winter Warm-Up and Summer Rally. Make FUN Happen! • Understanding To have fun at an event the Members need to have an understanding of why the event is being put on. Is it a local event? Is it a District or Region event? Is it an annual convention? All of these questions help you make an informed decision about your involvement and attendance. • Planning Plan to have fun. The people who are staging the event have spent a lot of time planning activities for the Members to enjoy. Participate and have fun. • Behavior/Attitude The Members’ behavior is important. If they attend with a poor outlook they are creating a less than positive outcome. If, on the other hand, they are looking to have fun they will. Event Planning Ingredients • Facility • Registration Fees • Banquets/Meals • Seminars • Hospitality Room • Rider Ed Range • Bike Show • On-Bike Games • Poker Runs • Observation Runs • Motel/Hotel accommodations • Entertainment • Vendors • Ceremonies • Prizes/ Trophies It also takes many Members having a good time to make the event a success. This formula seems to work for many of our events. People with the right attitude and lots of activities plus food generate fun for all. Attendees + Gold Wing spirit + Activities +Food =FUN! Planning: Start at home. Make a checklist, before the day of the event the Members will be planning their trip. A checklist is always a good tool to use in planning. •What to take? Are you taking a camera? Do you have enough medicine? •What to wear? Do you have comfortable shoes? What is the weather forecast for the trip? For the event? •Event Registration/Fees. Have you registered? Have you paid? •Reservations. Hotel/Motel/Campground; where are you staying? Do you have your confirmation number? •Travel Route. How are you going to get there? How long have you allowed for the trip? •Car/Motorcycle. Scenic/Freeway? Planning At the event. Once you arrive there is still more planning to attend to. •Registration packet. Where do you pick up your registration packet? Is everything in the packet that is supposed to be there? •Check event schedule. Sit down and look over the event schedule. What do you want to do or see? •Plan your daily activities. Using the schedule plan out each day’s activities. Will you be riding somewhere? Will you be staying at the event site? •Participate as much or little as you want. At your first event you may be tempted to try to do everything. That is almost impossible and by the end of the day you will be tired and not having a good time. Pace yourself. •Relax and enjoy the event. Take some time to sit down and people watch or visit with old and new friends Attitude Attitude/behavior determines altitude •Are you approachable? Can people approach you? Are you a person that smiles a people? Are you planning on having a good time? Or are you a grouch and looking to find fault with everything? •Is the glass half full? Hoping for the best? •Are you standoffish? Is the glass half empty? Expecting the worst? The Illinois District Recipe For Fun: Take a gallon of UNDERSTANDING, Mix with a quart of PLANNING Stir in 3 cups of a POSITIVE ATTITUDE Yield: A bushel of FUN Servings: Unlimited GWRRA – Region E - Illinois District Page 8 Illinois District News Wall of Heroes Written by Pam and Tom Waller, Assistant Illinois District Directors, Eastern Pam and Tom Waller Assistant Illinois District Directors, Eastern The District Team is already working on Summer Rally in July at Mt Vernon. ILLINOIS COUPLE OF THE YEAR 2014 Wayne & Shirley Schimdt ILLINOIS INDIVIDUAL OF THE YEAR 2014 Nancy Hutchings GWRRA – Region E - Illinois District Page 9 Illinois District News The Illinois District is once again holding the Dash4Cash participation event. In 2013, IL Chapter Q came in second. If we work a little harder, we might just come in first in 2014. Rules were in the February newsletter. In the rules you will see how we can earn points throughout the year. Below are a few pictures of Dash4Cash entries that have already been submitted. If you are interested in going to an event, another chapter gathering or seminars, call a friend and ask them along. Take a picture (need at least 4 from the chapter and the person responsible for the event, usually the chapter director or other officer). Submit the picture to Nancy Mallett via email at nans_own@yahoo.com or in person, along with the information about the event, seminar, etc. Ready, Set, Let’s Go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MAD Events—working concessions Visiting Other Chapter Gatherings February Education Day Participants Visiting Other Chapter Gatherings Thanks to Jim Rusher, Steve Schlager, Jean Potwora and Lisa Gales for the pictures. March Education Day Participants —-> GWRRA – IL Chapter Q Page 10 Chapter Director’s Corner Warmest Greetings from Chapter “Q” Directors, Jim & Helen Rusher Hey, this is March here in Southern llinois and the sleet, ice and snow is “STILL” falling out of the sky and making a deposit on the ground that looks much like a white carpet! Yesterday I installed a set of tire cables on the truck in anticipation of the incoming sleet, ice and snow. As I was installing the tire cables, I was thinking, hey, I should be removing these things from the tires, not installing them, but so it goes. Looks like Chapter “Q” folks will have even more time to plan our upcoming rides as opposed to actually riding for the time being due to the weather conditions. This would be a great time to give your motorcycles a very good going over to inspect and repair any items that need to be taken care of “now” instead of being broke down on the side of the road “somewhere” wishing that you would have fixed or replaced what has disabled your bike. Larry and Kathy Howell, our Chapter “Q” “MAD” Representatives are busy planning several exciting places for us to visit this year. I understand that the rides will involve ice-cream stops at various locations and will be a lot of fun. As Chapter “Q” Folks, let’s all get involved with our Chapter “MAD” program and support and participate in the fun rides that Larry and Kathy are preparing for all of us. So far the mileage challenge for our Chapter Ladies has been limited due to our extended winter weather conditions. Ladies, do not be dismayed as surely, the weather will improve to the point where you will be able to safely ride your bikes/ scooters/trikes to scheduled Chapter events to accumulate the miles and be a winner. Helen and I drove to St. Louis last week for the purpose of purchasing and picking up a commercial type Popcorn Machine. It has been purchased and now belongs to “Southern Illinois Ride-In”. We would like to thank Bill and Becky Gottschalk for their kindness in loaning their Popcorn Machine over the previous years to S.I.R.I. Helen and I have cleaned this machine up and have even made a “test run” of popcorn and it operates as it should and the popcorn was delicious. We cleaned it up once again and it is ready for use. Until next month ( April ) ride safe and have fun. Jim & Helen We hope you know how much your thoughtfulness is appreciated. We are blessed with so many wonderful friends. The kind words and gifts have been a blessing. Kim has a long road ahead of her, but she now knows how many people are supporting and praying for her. Thanks Again, Willie & Carlene To Chapter Q, I cannot express my gratitude for all you did for me. So generous beyond belief. You are a great bunch of people. Love Kim Alexander GWRRA - Southern Illinois Wingers Page 11 Chapter Sponsors: Chapter Q Monthly Get Together Summary Chapter Director, Jim Rusher, welcomed the 58 participants to our gathering. We were happy to greet our guests, Dan & Martha Ribbing and Tom Braun aka Woofie to our meeting. Thank you cards from Willie & Carlene Kohlenberger and Kim Alexander were read (see content on page 10). Walter Potwora had some Niehaus Tickets for sale. If you didn’t get one, watch for others to be selling them. Chapter Q will be participating in the Meet the Chapters Fun Run this year. The kickoff is April 5th at Crescent City. More information will be forthcoming when the cards arrive. Chapter E has invited us to join them for a potluck on Sun, March 16th at 1pm at the Kalaher’s Home. Carlene Kohlenberger talked about some upcoming events including a St. Patrick’s party at Gary Kohlenberger’s home in Murphysboro on March 22nd. Stew, lemonade and tea will be provided. Wear your green! Please park in the back and come in through the east side of the garage. Carlene received 6 designs for the 30th anniversary t-shirts, and they were available for us all to view and make a choice as to which we liked the best. Results will be available next month. Assistant District Director, Steve Gottschalk told us that we earned $358 at the last concessions for our charity money. We are working the Supersectional on Tues, March 11. He talked about the Illinois Summer Rally July 24-26 in Mt. Vernon. On that Thursday, there will be a Biker’s Night at Miner’s Field. Chapter Q may consider setting up a MAD table there. More info to come. Kathy Howell told us the chapter will be doing the motorist awareness event of a Windshield Wash on May 10th at the rest area on the southbound side at Rend Lake. We will have breakfast at the Cozy Table in Benton first and after the event we are invited to the Rushers for a bbq lunch/potluck. Dan Ribbing invited us to IL Chapter O’s 15th Anniversary Party in Woodriver on June 22nd. Jim Rusher introduced our guest speaker, Officer Steve Kalaher to speak on IL Conceal Carry. Officer Kalaher is a Law Enforcement Firearms Instructor and has 22 years in the Department of Corrections. He invited anyone who would like to take the course to see him after the meeting, and he would give them the information. We learned about: #1—Night Riding #2—Listening and Communicating #3—Chapter of the Year The presenters were Dan Ribbing and Jean Potwora who were very knowledgeable about the seminars they presented. I personally obtained valuable information on how to become a better corider. I was very impressed especially with the Chapter of the Year information and how to earn points. Afterwards, we were invited to attend their dinner ride at Ravanelli’s in O’Fallon, IL. Great food, Great fun, Great friends, Lisa Gales As most of you know, Chapter Q is going to take a shot at becoming IL District Chapter of the Year for 2014. GWRRA – IL Chapter Q Page 18 Chapter Q News Safety Tips: It’s All In Your Head Feature Article from: ROK/Accelerate, Written by Jim Culp Submitted by Willie Kohlenberger, Chapter Q Rider Educator Did you know that the majority of a rider’s control lies in how they position their head while navigating their motorcycle? If you aren’t confident in making U-turns on your bike then you may want to read this. Are you the type of rider who dreads having to make a U-turn in a confined area and find yourself “tippy-toeing” your bike around? Are you making numerous corrections as you ride through the curves instead of making nice, smooth arcs? If you answered “yes” to either of these questions then you may want to continue reading. The good news is that the problem is in your head. No, I don’t mean like that. What I mean is that Carlene & Willie the majority of your control problems are all in your head or, more specifically, how you Kohlenberger position your head. Chapter Q The single biggest error that most riders make is they fail to look where they want to go. Rider Educators I know that, for most of us, it’s been drilled into our heads since we started walking, “Look where you’re going!” Usually, that works pretty well but motorcycle handling is a bit different. Motorcycles tend to go where you are looking and the failure of riders to smoothly negotiate curves or successfully make U-turns is their failure to turn their heads and focus on their desired destination in the roadway. Most riders, when making a U-turn, will focus on the roadside, or ditch rather than the area much further behind them like the centerline of the roadway. I’ll say it again, motorcycles tend to go where you are looking. If you’re focused on the ditch, guess what? That’s where you’ll go. A Top Gun rider I know suggests that the rider should, “Look past their antennas or taillights.” Another one told me, “Don’t look where you’re going; look where you want to go” Similarly, if the rider doesn’t look as far through the curve as possible, they end up doing what author Lee Parks, in his excellent book Total Control, calls “50 pencing” (the British 50 Pence coin is faceted around its edge) basically converting the curve into a series of short, straight lines. Again, the remedy is to turn your head. Focus your attention as far through the curve as possible (keep moving your focus as you progress through the curve), maintain a steady or increasing throttle and trust your tires (you do have good tires, don’t you?). The majority of riders who crash in a curve (roughly 50 percent) follow the same process: (1) They fail to slow to an appropriate entry speed (that’s a speed that will allow you to accelerate all the way through the curve), (2) They stop looking where they want to go (if they ever were), and (3) They start looking where they want to land One more time; motorcycles go where you look. If you think you’re going too fast as you enter a curve: (1) Keep looking at (or for) the exit of the curve, (2) Press the handlebar to lean the bike more, (3) Hold your throttle steady and stay off your brakes, and (4) Trust your tires. If you go back and consider the things I’ve mentioned here, you’ll see that the solutions to these very common problems are “all in your head.” Part of the solution is how you position your head, and part is how well you use the contents of your head Safe riding is much more your eyes and brain rather than hands and feet. Motorcycling requires considerably more concentration than does automobile driving because motorcycles are less stable and more vulnerable than cars. A pothole that is uncomfortable in a car can cause a motorcyclist to crash A stone kicked up by a passing car that bounces off a car’s windshield can knock a rider completely off their bike. Consequently, a motorcyclist has to be much more aware and focused. Some of the key ingredients to being a safe and smooth riding motorcyclist are a solid skill set, confidence in your abilities and practice. A larger part of that is using your head properly So what are you waiting for? Get out there and practice being a better and safer rider. GWRRA - Southern Illinois Wingers Page 19 Chapter Q News Opportunities to Practice Your Riding Skills Nothing could be worse than someone thinking they know it all and don’t need to practice or brush up on their skills. Everyone can learn something new or correct a bad habit they have picked up over the year(s). Do you pull a trailer? GWRRA - MO Chapter I Page 24 Excerpts from Various Newsletters MAD - Drive Aware: “They” are out there. Written by Roger Riley, MAD Coordinator, MO Chapter I Many motorcycle crashes happen because the driver of the vehicle does not see the motorcyclist. And this time of year it is even worse. Very few people expect to see motorcycles on the road. All bikes are put away after Labor Day, right? So, why doesn't the average driver see a motorcyclist? Motorists tend to look for other cars and trucks. Also, because it is smaller than a car, a motorcycle is harder to see. Motorcyclists move differently than cars do. Motorcyclists shift positions to react to traffic, weather and road conditions. We all know this, but maybe your friends and family don’t. Print this page and give copies, or email it, to the people that may need a reminder that, “We” are out there. Motorcyclists and other drivers can benefit from these simple tips: Look out for motorcyclists. Be aware that although you may not see any cars or trucks, there may be an unnoticed motorcycle. Anticipate a motorcyclist’s maneuver. Motorcyclists may change positions within a lane to respond to road conditions, weather or other factors. Signal your intentions. Even if you don’t see cars in front or behind you, look carefully in all directions for approaching motorcyclists. Respect a motorcycle. Treat motorcycles as a full-sized vehicle with equal rights to the road. Give motorcycles a full lane. Allow plenty of space when following a motorcycle. The slightest contact can mean a spill and/or injury for the rider. You can DRIVE AWARE of motorcyclists and the situations where crashes are likely to occur. Drivers also contribute to motorcycle crashes where the motorcycle never makes contact with the car. Drivers who unintentionally pull out in front of a motorcycle often force the rider to over-brake, slide and fall. Crashes are most likely to occur in these high-risk situations: Left Turns – The most common type of crash involving a car and a motorcycle is at an intersection when the automobile driver is making a left turn in front of a motorcycle. Car’s Blind Spot – Motorcyclists riding alongside a lane of cars are often out of view of the automobiledriver. An unsuspecting driver may collide with a motorcyclist as the driver tries to change lanes. Hazardous Road Conditions – Motorcyclists have to be much more concerned about road surfaces than drivers do. A motorcyclist may have to slow down or change lanes to avoid road obstructions such as potholes and road debris. Weather Conditions –When the road surface is wet or icy, a motorcycle’s braking and handling are impaired. A strong gust of wind can move a motorcycle across an entire lane if the rider isn’t prepared for it. Wind gusts from large trucks in the other lane can also be a real hazard. Large Vehicles – A large vehicle, such as an SUV or truck, can block a motorcycle from a driver’s view. The motorcyclist may seem to suddenly appear from nowhere. If you DRIVE AWARE of motorcyclists in these situations, you can help make the streets and roads safer for everyone.
