Bridge Big, backed by Zia,
strives to ‘spice up’ bridge
Few people
approach bridge with
the same passion that
Zia Mahmood does, so
when he seems extra
excited about a new
bridge project, it’s
probably wise to pay
attention.
What Zia is
touting is a new startup
company called Bridge
Big, the brainchild of
Rene De Waele and
Nira Talova, a married
couple who live in
Rotterdam, Netherlands.
Their dream is

Hair today, gone tomorrow
On Sunday evening, Owen Lien and Kevin
Dwyer were on Fourth Street Live in downtown
Louisville when the two young bridge players
heard about the “hair” drive going on for St.
Baldrick’s Foundation.
The California-based organization has unique
fund drives in which people are asked to have their
heads shaved, the hair going to children suffering
from cancer.
“We were at dinner,” said Lien, 22, of Hickory
NC. “We thought about it and did it.”
Lien, who had a great mop of hair, said it
was tougher on Dwyer to agree to be shorn. “He
thought it wouldn’t grow back,” Lien joked.
The two will soon depart for Amsterdam,
Netherlands, to represent the U.S. in the White
House Junior International bridge tournament.
The St, Baldrick’s event is named for a
fictional saint, whose name blends “bald” with “St.

Mixed Pairs again
Gail Greenberg and Jeff Hand, 2008 winners
of the Rockwell Mixed Pairs, thought they had
been edged out of a second victory in the event by
four-tenths of a matchpoint. Thanks to a scoring
correction, they moved into first by sixth-tenths of
a matchpoint in one of the closest finishes ever in
the event.
Three years ago in Detroit, they won the Mixed
Pairs by about one-quarter of a board.

Most high seeds still
playing in Vanderbilt
The team captained by Mark Gordon and
seeded ninth in the Vanderbilt field was the only
one of the top seeds to fall in the second full day of
play in the knockout event.
Gordon lost to the original No. 41 seed led
by Meng Kang, of Beijing, China. His teammates
include one other player from China – Shaolin
Sun – and four who live in the U.S.: Xiaodong
Shi, Naperville IL; Jiang Gu, Mountain Lakes NJ;
Jian-Jian Wang, Clarksville MD, and Hailong Ao,
Herndon VA.
Gordon’s teammates were Pratap
Rajadhyaksha, Alan Sontag, David Berkowitz,
Terje Aa and Jorgen Molberg.
Most other high seeds cruised, but No. 3 John
Diamond had to rally in the fourth quarter to make
it to today’s round of 16. Diamond trailed the Paul
Lewis squad 121-94 before pouring it on in the last
set, winning 81-15 to win 175-136.

The task of a journalist is, as Thomas Hobbes

Playing in the early morning pairs is always a
give-away that you’re not in the event you prefer –
in this case, the Vanderbilt.
Looking for matchpoints and masterpoints,
you sit North, and after 3♦ by East, double by
your partner and pass by West, you try 4♥ with the
North hand.
Yes, you’d rather have your doubleton in a
black suit, but what’s a guy to do?
On the lead of the ♦K, you win the ace, play
a heart to the ace for the trump finesse. You draw
the last trump and play the ♦J. East wins and exits
with a spade (a club endplays his partner at once).
You win the ♠A, cash the ♠K, pitch your
spade loser on the ♦10, ruff a spade and lead a club
to the jack for the endplay. The cards did indeed lie
precisely this way, except that the ♣K and ♣8 were
interchanged, so no endplay was necessary to bring
home the game.
For the record, any lead but a diamond defeats

Pretty amazing considering only three people were

How would you play 6♦ on a passive lead,
perhaps the ♣6?
I agree that it’s not a great slam, but curiously
if you play for clubs to split you need very little
more than the trump break.
You play three rounds of clubs, ruffing in
dummy, then cash the ♦A and ♦K. Now your line
will hinge on who has the long diamond. If it is
West, you should cash the ♥A and ♥K, then run
clubs. As the cards lie, West can ruff in when he
likes, but if he has a third heart to play, you ruff and
hope the hearts come in. If he has only spades, as
in the diagram, you will endplay him when he ruffs
the club to give you a spade trick and you can then
crossruff the rest.
If West discards on your two club winners, you
elope will all your remaining trumps, ruffing two
hearts in dummy and a spade in hand.
But what if East has the long diamond? In that
case, you can play the same line, but East gets to
ruff away one of your winners – that means you
will need the ruffing spade finesse.
Finally, if clubs are 4-2 with East having the
shortage so that he can overruff at trick four, you
will need for him to have three diamonds and the
♥Q doubleton or tripleton onside.

JUST FOR NEW PLAYERS
You gotta have heart
By Marti Ronemus
Another day of excitement, world-class
bridge, new people. Have you been able to
sandwich a tour of the Bluegrass country into
your days? If you can do so, don’t miss some
of the big horse
farms. When
you see how the
horses live and are
treated, you might
start wishing
that you would
be reincarnated
as a world-class
runner!
Writing these
articles has gotten
me thinking about some of the various horses in
my life. People who’ve not spent a lot of time
with horses probably think they are all pretty
much the same, and would be astonished to find
out how much their personalities differ.
My father’s first racehorse was a mare
named Sandy Seattle. Dad bought her for the
princely sum of $300 (in 1958), and she was
the perfect starter horse. One reason he selected
Standardbreds was he could be actively involved
in the training, and Sandy was a doll. She wasn’t
temperamental, so Dad could drive her for her
practice miles, learning as he went. She was all
business, and did whatever she was asked to do –
except run really fast! My sisters and I never got
emotionally involved with Sandy: she was always
polite, but not really interested in us. We learned
from her, though…how to groom a horse, how
to bathe them, how to (sigh) clean up after them.
Even though she never won a race for my dad,
she was worth a million bucks in experience.
Then there was Jaws. I can’t remember the
horse’s real name, but you can guess why his
stable name was Jaws. We kids were forbidden
to enter the barn unless he was firmly locked in
his stall. He was the exact opposite of Sandy. Her
manners were perfect, but she couldn’t run. Jaws
paced like the wind, but was unmanageable, and
even though he did some serious winning for my
father, Dad had to get rid of him because of his
temperament.
And Lana, my father’s first real winner, was
a sweetheart! She was built dainty and small, not
the conformation of a big winner. Lana was a
flirt, curious, loved us kids, would grab hold of
a shirt sleeve and shake it playfully. She adored
being groomed, would nibble at the brushes,
making happy grunts.

Lana was my introduction
to heart, that indefinable
combination of courage and
determination that sets some
horses, and people, apart – hard
to define, easy to recognize.
Lana was born to run, and let
her people know it. When a
Standardbred is being exercised,
it wears one set of equipment.
When it is going to be asked for
some serious speed or raced, it
wears another. Lana would be
ecstatic when she saw the racing
bike being readied; she knew
she would be allowed to let
loose that day. Her excitement
could make her hard to manage,
so whoever was “dressing”
her would have to fool her and
maneuver her into position
without her seeing what she was
going to “wear” that day.
Lana not only had a nice
racing career despite her tiny
size (unfortunately giving Dad
a taste for victory) but when
she retired from the track,
she had several lovely foals.
After a long, long life, she died
peacefully on my Uncle Dan’s
farm.
While my dad had more
than his share of winners (and
heaven knows, plenty of losers), he never had
a truly Great Horse. People bandy the phrase
Great Horse around, applying it to (in my humble
opinion) way too many animals—and people.
Once you’ve seen a great one, you are less likely
to use the phrase casually. Walter Farley, author
of The Black Stallion, wrote a fictionalized
biography of Man ‘O War, where he described
how awestruck he was when he first saw the
horse.
I know what he meant. Once Dad took us to
Hanover Shoe Farms, the biggest Standardbred
horse farm in the world, and one of their standing
stallions, Bullet Hanover, was in the field,
exercising. I had no idea what horse it was or
what his record was, but he stunned me with
his aura. He was beyond majestic, showing no
interest in the people looking at him, just moved
back and forth across his field (and he made the
earth his!) shaking the ground with his power.
I would not have been surprised to hear that he
was the king of an alien species, come to conquer
a forcing bid at the one level with the intention
of bidding your other suit next. You want to get
both suits in before competition starts and this is
the best way. A one-level response after a takeout
double is unlimited and should be treated as if
second hand has passed. As North, once West
bids, you are off the hook and should be happy
to pass. East’s 2♣ bid is natural and not forcing.
As West, your jump raise to 4♣, bypassing 3NT,
is both forcing and slam invitational. East, with a
minimum, signs off in 5♣.
Defensive commentary: As South, shift to
a trump at trick two rather than set up declarer’s
♠Q, a card partner doesn’t have given the
negative signal at trick one.
Play commentary: As East, with high
trumps and short suits on both sides, think
“crossruff.” Start by counting your top tricks. You
have the club trick that you have just taken plus
both red aces for three. Next, count the trump
tricks available. You remain with four trumps in
dummy facing three in your hand all of which can
Earth. This horse was far, far above any I had
ever been exposed to, and I have never forgotten
the impact he had, even though it was 38 years
ago.
And now for our bridge tie-in. I’ll bet
you can find an equivalent among your bridge
acquaintances for every one of these horses. You
certainly know Sandy, and no doubt have had to
deal with your share of Jaws-like players!
And then there are the great bridge players.
There’s a lot more to the greats than just the
ability to win. They have “heart.” Unlike the
magnificent Bullet Hanover, you might not be
able to spot them from their physical presence,
but when you sit down with them, and they
graciously set about stomping you with class and
kindness, you’ll recognize them for sure. And not
forget them easily!!
So let me hear about the characters you are
meeting… what are they like? Please e-mail
me your stories and experiences. I’m bored and
lonely with this stupid broken leg. mronemus@

be made separately. Bottom line: you start with
three top tricks and can make seven more trump
tricks by crossruffing. You are short one trick,
so you need the heart finesse. After you take the
heart finesse and it wins, cash the ♥A, discarding
a spade, cash the ♦A and merrily ruff diamonds
and hearts back and forth for 11 tricks.

low from dummy, and DeMartino won the queen.
A second round of clubs put Stiefel in. He cashed
the ♥A and stuck declarer in dummy with a fourth
round of trumps.
Despite his strong hand, Stiefel had passed
smoothly over 1NT, so declarer played DeMartino
for the ♦A. Declarer had discarded diamonds from
his hand on the third and fourth round of hearts, so
he was down to a doubleton king when he led the
♦J from dummy.
DeMartino covered with the queen, and Stiefel
took the ace when declarer played the king. Now a
diamond to the 10 put DeMartino in to cash the ♦6.
That was three down for plus 300 to the New
Englanders – good for all the matchpoints (77).

A Grand Old Time
By Daniel Wolkowitz
With the top 55 seeds in the Vanderbilt
receiving byes, the ACBL organized a closed Swiss
for Monday. A few teams elected to play their own
practice sessions, instead partaking in the official
warm-up. One of these featured the Onstott and
Deutsch teams in a friendly but exciting match.
How would you and your partner bid these
cards?
Second in the Leventritt Silver Ribbon Pairs:
Tom Kniest and Don Stack.
Watch those spots
By Barry Rigal
This excellent card-play problem arose during
our second-round loss in the Vanderbilt Knockout
Teams. It’s a two-parter: consider it first in 6♣ by
North and then the actual problem of 6♣ by South.

♥ A 10

♣ A K Q 10 7 6
In 6♣ by North on a trump lead, you draw
trumps, pitching a spade from hand. Now perhaps
the best thing to do is strip off four rounds of
hearts, then run the ♦J to endplay East unless he
began with five hearts. Almost as good at trick four
is to run the ♦J, won by East with the queen. He
must return a low heart, and you put in the 10. To
give you any problem, West must be able to cover
with the ♥J. You win the ♥Q, unblock the ♥A,
then cross to the ♦A, cash the ♥K (hoping for the 9
to drop), pitching a diamond from dummy.
If the ♥9 does not appear, you ruff a diamond
in dummy, and if the remaining high diamond
does not appear, you fall back on the spade finesse.
That’s about a 90% shot, I think.
At the table in 6♣ by South, on the lead of the
♦4 you duck and East wins the king. Back comes
a trump, and you draw three rounds, then cash the
three top hearts. If the ♥J 9 fall, it’s all over. At the
table, East shows out on the third heart. You now
pitch the ♦10 on the third heart and play the ♦A,
West following with the 2, East with the 8. When
you lead the ♦9 from dummy, East follows with
the 6. Who has the queen? Surely East. If West has
led the ♦4 from Q-4-2, he deserves to beat you!

followed by Blackwood and a signoff in 6♥.
At the other, Icelanders Thorlakur Jonsson and Jon
Baldursson used a strong club opening and a nineround auction in which East showed 1-5-3-4 with
the ♦A Q and the ♣Q. This seemed like enough to
provide two chances for the grand – or did it?
The auction had made West declarer and
North, Ron Smith of San Francisco led a diamond
away from the king. One potential problem of
pinpointing dummy’s assets is that the defenders
will know what to lead at trick one.
Baldursson could not afford to take the
diamond finesse at trick one because he had plenty
of other chances to make his contract (doubleton
♣J, 3-3 clubs or four clubs to the jack with the
♦K).
However, it’s likely that West would have bid
the grand anyway without the ♦J, and there was
no guarantee that East held the ♣10. If that was the
case, the diamond lead would force declarer’s hand
at trick one. On the actual hand, Smith held the ♦K
but clubs were 3-3 and declarer guessed the end
position correctly.
This deal came up in the second half:
♠ Q 10 9 6
♥Q3
♦ A K 10 9 3 2
♣K
♠AJ2
♥AK6542
♦6
♣AJ3
Having reached a mediocre 7♥ contract, how
would you play on the lead of the ♥10?
Obviously, you need 3-2 trumps and to either
pick up the diamonds for at least four tricks or
take a spade finesse. How should you play to best
combine your chances while avoiding a dangerous
overruff?
There are two rather straightforward lines.
One is to draw trumps in three rounds, and play for
diamonds 3-3 or the ♠K onside.
Another line is for declarer to win in hand,
play the ♦A and ruff a diamond, return to the ♥Q
and ruff a diamond. This often beats the first line
when the diamonds are 4-2 with the ♠K offside but
loses when LHO is 3-2 in hearts and diamonds. It
also loses when the ♠K is onside and diamonds are
6-0 or 5-1 with the defense able to ruff or score an
extra trump trick via an uppercut when RHO is 2-1
in the reds.
As for the actual percentages, I’ll leave that
to the real math experts out there. My inclination
is that the second line is a few percentage points
better, but not much more than that. At the table,
this line was the winner, with LHO holding
♠K 5 3
♥J 10 7
♦Q 8 5 4
♣9 5 2
Both tables were in the grand with one declarer
trying each line, so this was a 20-IMP pickup for
Onstott.

Bridge big
continued from page 1
but the Bridge Big creators and Zia are hoping
that competition for cash prizes will attract more
interest from the public and the news media, giving
bridge a shot in the arm.
The company will begin a testing phase next
month and plan to roll out the finished product
during the summer, possibly in July.
There will be a demo match on Friday at 11
a.m. in the Breathitt Room in the Suite Tower,
second floor. Bridge Big will award three $100
cash prizes to spectators in a drawing.
Players are also invited to become beta testers
for Bridge Big. Information is available on the
home page: bridgebig.com.
An obvious concern, acknowledged by the
Bridge Big creators and Zia, is security (translation:
cheating). They have already thought of that.
To assure that no player gains an unfair
advantage, all competitions will be individuals, one
board per round with an unknown partner against
unknown opponents (all such information will be
revealed when the contest is over). No kibitzers are
allowed, and the scoring will be duplicate but not
against the field. The comparisons will be against
the “history” of a deal that may have been played
hundreds of times previously.
This is what the Bridge Big creators have
written about security on the company web site:
Security
Anywhere there’s real money at stake, people
will look for ways to cheat. On Bridge Big, this
will be no different. Bridge Big is committed to
prevent any kind of cheating on its site.
On bridge sites today it is very easy to cheat
because players are allowed to see who their
partners are. The only way to deal with this security
issue is by playing individually and anonymously.
As an extra measure, players will not be allowed
to chat with their partners during a game, although
they may still talk to their opponents. Even if
players somehow find out who they’re partnering
with, they can only benefit from this for one board,
after which they’re split up again.
However, even when players are not each
other’s partners they may still try to exchange
information about their hand to other players
in the tournament. To prevent this type of
collusion, players cannot see what direction they
sit at the table and what board they’re playing.
The vulnerability at the table will also give no
clue as all simultaneously played games in a
tournament share the same vulnerability and dealer
combination. The limited time players have for
one board also limits the feasibility for players to
exchange useful information. Only after a board
has been played by everyone in the field will a user
be able to see all four complete hands.
In smaller tournament settings, these measures
might still not prove sufficient. Although seating
schedules on Bridge Big will never allow two
or more tables to be playing the same board
simultaneously, players could still leak information
about previously played boards to each other.
In larger tournaments this is less of a threat
as players will be divided over multiple sections,
each with a unique set of boards, hindering player
collusion significantly as collaborating players
will be seated in different sections for most of the
tournament.
In smaller tournaments or in the final rounds of
a large knockout tournament it would be preferable
if boards are only played exactly once. Scores
would be compared not to other players in the
tournament, but to all players that ever played the
board before in previous tournaments. Aside from
thwarting colluders, this measure has an additional
advantage: it provides players with a fairer score,
as their results are compared to hundreds of other
players, instead of only the handful that are in the
tournament.

Whitehead (1866-1931) was president of the
Simplex Automobile Company, but bridge held
such a fascination for him that he retired from
business in 1910 to devote his life to bridge.
He was the inventor of many bidding and play
conventions, the quick-trick table of card values,
the Whitehead system of requirements for original
bids and responses and the Whitehead table of

Bean Trophy
The trophy was designated by the ACBL
Board of Directors in 1996 to honor Bean, ACBL
president in 1972 and chairman of the Board in
1973.

the Board from 1964 until 1988 and served as
president of the ACBL Charity Foundation from
1974 until 1981. He was a member of the National

Governors and general chairman of arrangements
for the World Team Olympiad in Seattle in 1984.
Bean and his wife, Anne, were named
ACBL Honorary Members for 1992, the first
time that honor was bestowed on a husband-wife
combination.

(4) Specific king asking “below our suit.”
(5) ♣K.
By partnership agreement, weak two-bids,
even at unfavorable vulnerability are usually “bad
hands.” So, nothing was sure when I could have
opened ♦J 9 8 5 4 3 and a side card. Gardner took
full advantage, despite being the person preempted
by her own partner. She started patiently with 2NT
— modified Ogust. She learned that I liked my
hand, ostensibly 8--10 high-card points, and didn’t
like my suit (I upgraded my two kings; she’s seen
my active bidding over many years!).
After RKC confirmed the ♦K, Gardner was
not content with the likely small slam. Because
she could sign off later, Gardner tried 5NT on the
off-chance that I held the ♣K. Now she could count
12 top tricks (one spade, two hearts, six diamonds
and three clubs), and aggressively bid the grand
slam which could have various squeeze or split
chances. When the ♣J dropped early, 13 tricks and
a near top were Gardner’s reward for thoughtful
bidding.

To top it off, Bridge Big will constantly be
tracking connections between users on the site
to prevent any long-term cheating. If two users
happen to frequently play in the same tournament,
they will at one point be prevented from joining the
same tournament. On poker sites, a similar strategy
is applied successfully. In case users have any
personal information like address, e-mail address or
bank accounts in common, they are never permitted
to play in the same tournament.

Patrick.” In 2000, a group of three Irish-American
reinsurance executives from Monrovia CA came
up with a unique fundraiser in conjunction with St.
Patrick’s Day: a head-shaving event to benefit kids
with cancer.
Twenty people who volunteered to shave their
heads collected pledges from their friends in an
effort to raise $17,000 on the 17th. They raised
more than $104,000, and an annual event was born. The concept spread throughout the country.
Since 2,000, more than 147,000 people, including
12,000 woman, have participated and raised more
than $90 million. Mixed Pairs

championship. Besides the two Mixed Pairs wins
with Hand, she also has a victory in the event with
Ahmed Hussein, in 1978. Hand now has two North
American titles to his credit.
In 18th place at the start of play on Wednesday,
they positioned themselves for the win with a
63.19% game in the first final session. Their
57.85% game in the second final session was
enough to secure the win.

The Clever Cooks fixed special lunches for
Verna Goldberg’s Friday game. Some of the
memorable meals included chili, soups, barbequed
pork sandwiches, chicken salad, potato salad, cakes
and more. The cooks include Al Bevins, Carolyn
Carpenter, Connie Crockett, Hannah Davis, Cheryl
Klein, Perry Moore, Cheryl Overy, Gail Slater and
Tinker Zimmerman.
Bonnie and Lynda Lawson
Memorial Side Game
Bonnie Lawson died in 2009 after a multi-year
battle with cancer, followed soon afterwards by the
unexpected death of her daughter, Lynda. Bonnie
and her husband, Marvin, ran the Henderson KY
game for years and were well known as bridge
promoters throughout western Kentucky and
southern Indiana.
Bonnie won numerous regional and sectional
championships; always at tournaments close
to Henderson as she rarely traveled away from
home. At the table she was famous for her fierce
competitive spirit, the quality of her play, and for
her calm and friendly demeanor. Indeed, Bonnie
will always be remembered for her kindness and
grace. We name this event in her and her daughter’s
honor and as a tribute to her, her daughter and
her husband Marvin, who continues to run the
Henderson game and promote bridge in western
Kentucky.
Eleanor Orr Memorial
299er Pairs
Eleanor Orr was primarily a rubber bridge
player, but she was devoted to the game and played
several times each week. She particularly enjoyed
her Thursday afternoon game with Florence
“Teach” Tyler. Florence Tyler wrote the daily
bridge column for the Cincinnati Inquirer for many
years and doubtless acquired some of her example
hands from the Thursday afternoon games.
Linda Blum Memorial Stratified
299er Swiss Team
Linda A. Blum (1944 - 2009) was born in
Iowa, married Sam Blum and moved to Louisville,
and finally settled in Tampa FL. She became an
active and participating member of her Synagogue
and local community. While raising a family of
four, she never lost sight of her responsibilities
to all of the organizations she loved. Ultimately,
she became the leader and spokesperson of
these groups. Her influence covered the entire
southeastern region of the U. S. In her spare time
(!) she loved to play bridge. Although her schedule
did not permit steady participation, she played as
often as she could. We all loved her and miss her!
Jim Washer Memorial
Stratified Open Pairs
By Ralph Letizia
Jim Washer and I ran into each other in the
early Eighties at a local sectional. I had been
playing for some time and he just decided to show
up and see what the game was all about. We found
we had a myriad of things in common, and soon
became good friends. Naturally, the conversation
drifted toward bridge and we discussed playing
together. After a few games, it was clear that
while he was quite the novice, he also was very
intelligent and had a real knack for the game.
Because I already had several regular partners, I
suggested that he ask other good players for games
and see where it took him.
After about a year or so, we decided to form
a team of local players and see what we could do.
Amazingly enough, out of five regional knockout
events, that we played in we won three and finished
second in another! Jim played at least half and
usually three-fourths of the boards in every match,
and we were never behind when he came out.
In the early part of this century, he and I
decided to form a partnership so we could play
the Precision Club system. Due to totally different
styles, we struggled for the first year, and even
contemplated shelving the partnership and just
playing on teams with different people. We
persisted, however, and eventually developed a
rock-solid partnership winning many sectional and
regional events. Jim liked to play as much bridge as
possible during our local regional tournaments and
was the leading masterpoint winner at least three
times. His sudden passing in 2009 was a harsh
blow to all who knew him. His genial smile and
warped humor will always be missed.
Friday is Verna’s
Fun-filled Friday Game Day
Averaging 16 to 18 tables, Verna’s Friday game
is always lively. Director Verna Goldberg helps
make it a fun-filled day. The clever cooks earned
money from the Friday players to dedicate this day
to Verna, a special director, mentor, teacher and
friend. Monitoring
At this and future North American
Championships, ACBL will be monitoring NABC+
events with visible, real-time cameras. The images
will be recorded and will be available for later
official inspection and review.
By general monitoring of the session and
participants’ behavior, ACBL has another source
of information that may be useful in determining
facts and settling issues arising from some types of
ethical and behavioral complaints or actions. Please
summon a director if a problem occurs at the table.
This procedure is intended to assure everyone
that the playing field is level and that misbehavior
will not be tolerated.
Bid Box Alerts and
Announcements
When using bid boxes, the ACBL requires that
players tap the Alert strip and say “Alert” at the
same time.
When making an Announcement, use the
Announcement word (such as “transfer”) and tap
the Alert strip at the same time.
A player who Alerts or Announces a bid must
make sure his opponents are aware that an Alert or
Announcement has been made.

Thursday’s Sponsors
Bridge Club of Lexington
Stratified Swiss Team
The Bridge Club of Lexington offers 10
regularly scheduled games each week at its newly
expanded and totally renovated club. During the
last ten years, this forward-thinking club has grown
97% to 3600 tables in 2010. This sponsorship
is in honor of our members and unit who gave
so generously of their time and/or monetary
donations to make our new facility possible with no
outstanding loans.
Mary Eversman Memorial
Intermediate-Newcomer Pairs
The Intermediate-Newcomer Pairs on Thursday
is named in memory of Mary Eversman, 76, of
Jasper IN. She died as the result of an auto accident
near Owensboro on July 27, 2010.
Mary was born in Carmi IL, to Clement and
Lillian Rebstock on February 18, 1934. She was
married to Thomas Eversman. They had four
children, one deceased, and 13 grandchildren.
Mary was a graduate of the Academy of Notre
Dame in Belleville IL and St. Mary’s School of
Nursing in Evansville IN.
Mary was active in St. Joseph Church, Jasper,
and Epiphany Cathedral in Venice FL. She was an
artist and musician and enjoyed playing bridge and
tennis. She was an active member of the ACBL.
John Hinton and
Cyndy Cradick Day
Cyndy Cradick is one of the most-beloved
bridge teachers, directors and managers in the
Central Indiana Bridge Association (CIBA). This
Silver Life Master has devoted her life to bridge
over several decades and is the reason many new
players enter the bridge world and go on to become
avid bridge contenders. Cyndy has worked very
hard to create a partnership with members of the
local ABA, and through her efforts, many of our
ABA friends are frequent players at ACBL games.
For nearly two decades, Cyndy served as secretary
for Unit 130, retiring in 2010. As caddy master, she
has recruited and trained many local youngsters to
caddy CIBA events. In her spare time, along with
husband ,John, Cyndy spends many hours with her
kids and grandkids. An avid reader, she can also
now be frequently found with her new Kindle. She
never fails to end a game without saying, “Thanks
for coming.” We say to her, “Thanks for being
there when we came.”
John Hinton served the Central Indiana
Bridge Association as Unit Treasurer for nearly
two decades. His hard work brought many
organizational improvements to the Unit’s business
and bookkeeping efforts. While tackling these
duties for CIBA, John found time to hold the same
job for District 11. John is a fierce competitor and
has attained Gold Life Master status. He recently
decided to retire from his duties as treasurer of
CIBA and District 11 so that he could concentrate
on spending more time with Brenda and their
children, some of whom are already serving as
caddies for area tournaments. The members of
CIBA appreciate John’s kindness and patience, and
hope with some of his volunteer work behind him,
we now will have more opportunity to see him at
the bridge table. Thanks for your efforts, John.
Churchill Downs
Bracketed Knockouts
Horse racing in Kentucky is rich in history,
dating back to 1789 when the first race course was
laid out in Lexington. It was almost 100 years later,
however, in 1875, that Churchill Downs officially
opened and began its tradition as “Home of the
Kentucky Derby.”
