An Angel visits the Cat House
At the end of September, The Cat House
on the Kings was visited by a little angel
on earth, 7 year old Kaylie Bergen. Sadly,
Kaylie was diagnosed in February 2010 with
a very rare brain stem tumor, for which
she is being aggressively treated. Cuddling with the kitties at the King County
Pet Adoption Center in Kent Washington
helped Kaylie cope with chemotherapy
treatments, so much so that her family
decided to bring animals home to be
fostered.
Kaylie absolutely loves fostering and
has helped close to 100 kitties in the
past year. The entire family is involved,
mom Christy, Dad Russ, and brother
Dylan have all gotten into the act and
dedicated one bedroom just for the foster cats.
Since I missed their visit, I asked Kaylie’s
mom, Christy, to fill me in on the reason for
their trip to our shelter. I am printing her
response, as there is no way I could say it
better:
We first saw The Cat House on the Kings
on TV. With Kaylie’s love for cats I often
search the TV guide for good cat shows to
record. We all love cats, but Kaylie LOVES
cats :) I think we saw it first on “Must Love
Cats” but it was the full hour special, “The
lady with 700 cats” that got Kaylie really
wanting to come for a visit.
I looked on the website and was so happy
to see daily tours were available, and after telling Kaylie’s story we were offered a
room for the night. Talk about excitement
that were there. She LOVED it all.
It was so incredibly special for all of us and
will be forever remembered as the best trip
ever!! The love from Lynea and all the
people there has been fantastic. The
opportunity to stay the night with all the
cats is a dream come true and I can’t tell
you how much joy Kaylie got from this. It
was so fun to be there at nighttime.
Everyone has continued to show their
love of Kaylie on facebook and have sent
nice gifts to her in the mail. You guys are
really amazing people!!! Thank you
After we returned home from visiting, she
said she was ready to go back again :)
at our house when I got off the phone....a
sleepover with 700 cats, better than Disneyland! She was so excited and giggly on
the drive down from Seattle and right when
we arrived and went through the gate, a cat
hopped up into her lap for some love, and
another 5 were around her wheelchair- she
was overjoyed! She loved everything about
our visit to the Cat House, she loved each
and every cat there and loved that they are
everywhere. She loved the golf cart ride
which a cat and dog joined us on. She loves
Lynea, she is truly her hero and has big
dreams of following in her footsteps. She
loved waking up and having breakfast with
the seniors. She even loved the little dogs
Kaylie’s doing ok, she’s in good spirits and
feeling pretty good. She’s continuing chemo
daily at home. We take it one day at a time
and are thankful for every day. She continues to love our cats, our foster cats, and all
of your cats.
Kaylie lost her ability to smile last year,
which I miss so much, but I know she is
smiling ear to ear on the inside in all of
these pictures. Thank you again for everything you do to keep these kitties safe and
cage free and the Cat House going!

“Why You Should Adopt a Senior Cat for the Holidays!”

the four of us. So what happened next, I
consider some sort of a sign. By Lori DiBacco
It was a cold late February afternoon when
my friend and I arrived for our first visit to
“The Cat House on the Kings.” We drove
north from San Diego to spend one night
surrounding ourselves in the fur and “felineness” of the experience. After a brief tour of the property, we walked
into the senior house, an amazing sanctuary where the older (age eight and up) kitties live in blissful harmony. These amazing
creatures have come to live here because
their humans had the forethought to plan
ahead for their care before they were no
longer able to do so. There is a guest suite
within the senior house where visitors can
spend the night for a nominal donation and
take a senior kitty or two or three to cuddle
at night. Something they all dearly crave. Linda Baker, the senior house “Dorm Mom”,
is completely devoted to the cats that live
there. My friend and I randomly chose
four seniors to be our overnight guests in
the suite, and we had a quiet and peaceful evening. The morning following our arrival, I locked eyes with “the one”: a skin
I sat down at the kitchen table and Spike
jumped up on my lap, wrapped his paws
around my neck, and snuggled his head
under my chin. Spike had just chosen me
as HIS new human.

that “Spike really needs a human” and had
not been thriving since losing his human the
year before at the age of ten.
Our last five cats were adopted as seniors:

Spike joined our family. He is now a big
gorgeous 14 pound bright-eyed boy with a
thick, glossy, glorious coat of fur. His constant need for human contact and snuggling is so strong, I think he’d stay on my
shoulder 24 hours a day if I let him! If you’ve got room in your heart, please
consider adopting a senior.They are
trained, calm and can actually walk
through the house without knocking things
from the tables and counters. They do not
swat at the breakable Christmas tree ornaments and above all they are forever grateful to you for adopting and loving them. .
You made them a very special part of your
family for the holidays.
Students’ donation helps the Cat House
The special needs young adult students at the Solano County Office of Education make crocheted rag rugs from donated, recycled material. Inspired by their
teacher’s love for animals and para-educator, Lori Fransen’s, volunteer work
with cats, they generously donated one of their 36 x 20 hand-made rugs as an
auction item for the Halloween Open House. Lori delivered it to our event and
according to event chair, Tammy Barker “The bidders loved it and it brought in
lots of money”. Thank you, Lori for inspiring your students to “help the kitties”.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Gilbert Hernandez at length
about his wife, Gayle Ann Jorgensen. I wanted to know what inspired her to give such a generous gift to the Cat House on the
Kings.
Gayle and Gil met on the campus of Cal Poly Pomona in 1989
where she was majoring in Animal Science, and he was majoring
in business. They went their separate ways after granduation: she
back to home to Fremont, Gil to Sanger. They did maintain a long
distance relatonship for 10 years, as he hated city life and she hated being away from it. Gayle finally relented and moved to Sanger
where she and Gil were married in March of 1998.
Gayle absolutely loves animals, especially horses and cats, and it
didn’t take her long to find out about the Cat House on the Kings.
She and Gil volunteered there and made sure to attend all the fund
raisers. Gayle was also looking forward to a trip to Wonder Valley
Ranch and Gil was losing weight so he’d be under the weight limit
for the ride when disaster struck. In May of 2011 Gayle felt numbness in her left foot and underwent a barrage of tests. A biopsy
in June confirmed she had a stage 3 malignant brain tumor. The
news wasn’t good. Her tumor was very rare (only 2.3% of all brain
tumors are of this type, and 67% of those die within three years.)

Gayle is already paralyzed on one side and the tumor is pressing
on her optic nerve, causing some blindness. You can hear the love
in Gil’s voice when he talks about quitting his job and caring for her
full time.
Two weeks prior to the Halloween Open House where this picture
was taken, Gil blacked out while cleaning and doing maintenance
on the roof of their home. That put him in the hospital (diagnosed
with retro grade amnesia as he did not remember anything) and
Gayle had to move into assisted care.
Gayle’s intention to help those she loved while she was able, resulted in donations to both of her nieces’ college funds. Despite all
the illness and injury, both Gayle and Gil showed up on October
29th to present Lynea with a check for $5,000. Gil calls Gayle a
“Super Trooper with an amazing disposition” in describing her spirits as she fights this battle. We, at The Cat House on the Kings, are
humbled to be the recipient of her largesse.

Autumn Harvest and Halloween Open House.
October 29th The Cat House on the Kings hosted the
Autumn Harvest and Halloween Open House. Chaired
by Tammy Barker-Noell and her committee: of Harvie Schreiber, Carol Neff, Amanda Barker, Jennifer
Dooms, Marie Pierce and Sue Rance, this event broke
all records in attendance and funds raised.
Kathy Carbaugh, a volunteer for The Cat House on the
Kings and a feline raw food diet advocate, welcomed
Jennifer Taylor and Chris Kalinowski of Feline’s Pride,
the week leading up to the Autumn Open House. Chris
and Jennifer flew in from Buffalo, New York to volunteer and to demonstrate how to make and use a raw
diet for cats. According to Kathy “Jennifer and I were
able to work together as if we’d been a team for years,
not just hours.” A ‘vampire” and her mom relax on the east lawn.
Chris Kalinowski, production manager of Feline’s Pride and Jennifer Taylor, the general manager, educate our Open House attendees about the
benefits of a raw food diet.
Jennifer and Chris created 40 lbs. of raw food while
conveying information about its benefits to a steady
stream of Open House attendees. Feline’s Pride manufactures both the raw formula, ready-to-eat food and
“raw made easy kits”, supplements that can be added
to raw meat to make it nutritionally complete. Our kitties
were happy to demonstrate how much they enjoyed it
by eating it all!

most touching fact is that some of those cats are ill and
will likely never find a home. But you guys gave them
a chance and gave them a great place to live out the
rest of their days in peace and comfort, not locked in a
tiny cold cage with no contact from other living beings.

CHOTK brings home awards at the Tonk’s
West Spooktacular Cat Show
Boy, what a whirlwind of a day we had
at the Visalia Spooktacular Cat Show
on Saturday, October 22. My buddy
in crime was fellow board member,
Francie Caraker. As always, Francie
was up early and ready to pick up two
of the many beauties at Cat House on
the Kings to show in the Domestic Feline division (nonprofessional, mixed breeds).
We also brought 4 kittens
along to the show who were
up for adoption. Two of them
were Siamese types, one
was a Russian Blue mix, and
the fourth was a playful, orange tabby.
Francie and I know little to
nothing about cat shows so
we were both exceedingly
happy when another Cat
House volunteer showed up
to help us. Pam Nishimoto
was a real jewel! She actually knew much about cat
shows and prevented us from making
some horrible mistakes, like not showing up on time with our cat at the correct arena. We would forget to listen
to the announcements or simply did
not understand what was being said.
Thank you BIG TIME, Pam.
Our “show kitties” were lovely. Each
was to be shown 6 times. Unfortunately, one of our “stars” became stressed
by all the commotion and so we decided to give her a breather. Pretty Girl
is indeed a gorgeous long-haired, Siamese blue-cream mix. If she had been
feeling better, we’re sure that little lady
would have captured many awards.
But that’s okay. We’ll save her for next
year!! On the other hand, our winning
feline of the day brought back 5 of the 6
awards-----one was FIRST PLACE out
of a pool of 15 domestic cats!!! Yippee for Apollo. He is an outstanding,
Ragdoll Siamese mix and obviously he
charmed the judges. Besides having
those good looks, Apollo is a wonderfully cuddly kitty; the type that searches
out love and snuggles. What a guy!!
The other good news was that our
orange tabby kitten got adopted by a
cat lover from San Diego. Thankfully,
our adoptor was willing to fill out the
Reach over 15,640 of our newsletter
subscribers with a business card

necessary forms and go through the
Cat House “investigation” to secure
great homes for all our kitties. That, of
course, meant a delay in our devoted
cat fan being able to have her kitten.
But she endured the wait and received
her baby the very next weekend during
the Cat House celebration
Open House. Now that little
kitty has a home with loads
of love in addition to play
time with a new kitty family. Almost as magnificent,
the little kitty now lives in the
continually perfect weather
of San Diego!!! Maybe we
should all come back as kitties with that “special look”
that can capture the hearts
of San Diego residents who
love cats as much as we do.
That’s my goal.

Tonks West who did such an
efficient job of putting the Spooktacular Cat Show together. We also owe
a debt of gratitude to Janeen’s Furniture Gallery, Inc. and Marilyn Winters

Fort Miller Middle School Students Raise $500
for The Cat House on the Kings
A desire to
teach community service to her
students at Fort
Miller
Middle
School in central Fresno led
principal Debbie Buckman,
a
long-time
supporter,
to
The Cat House
on the Kings.
With the help
of teachers Mr.
Kohl, Mrs. Aretakis, Ms. Vierra
and school psychologist Deena Ravicchio a competition was set up between
classes to see who could raise the most
money for the care of the cats in a week’s
time.
“The Nat Geo WILD special gave us the
perfect avenue to introduce kids before
they got there” said
Ms. Buckman. The
teachers
showed
leadership and career pathways classes the “The Lady
with 700 Cats”, and
got an overwhelming
response from the
students. A lottery
system was used
to winnow the number of students who
signed up due to limited seats". (The visit
coincided with the Autumn Open House
on October 29th, a Saturday, so it wasn’t
getting out of classes that motivated the
kids.)
According to Debbie “The kids can
hardly wait to come back! We had a
hard time getting them to leave. I think
the thing that surprised them the most
was seeing that all the cats (and dogs)
really got along. It was ADORABLE to
see the kids’ reaction to meeting Lynea,
and seeing both Hoss and Jasper,” two
animals that were prominently featured
in the video. “It was hard for any of them

Hi guys,
I just wanted to thank you for having my daughter and I for
the weekend. It was an amazing experience and (if you’ll
have us, of course) we would love to come back in December. I hope that we were helpful and it’s an eye opener seeing how much work goes into the cat house. Ashley and
Linda were GREAT and kept us busy. I’m already spreading
the word over here at UCLA how much help is needed and
how peaceful and healing it is at the cat house.
My daughter cried when we left and neither of us wanted to
go home. I had brought supplies (blankets, bleach, food and
litter) and am already working on rounding up more. So we’ll
see you guys in December and will be ready to work.
I took tons of pictures and videos and attached a couple of
my favorites. Thanks again! We literally can’t wait to come
back.
