C R E AT I V T Y Beal High’s own Radio Show ReLaunches to Broadcast every Lunchtime Mr Chapman and Mr Winter have allowed pupils from all key stages to broadcast radio shows at lunch. After relaunching in October, the response was overwhelm ing with over 200 pupils signing up to broadcast a lunchtime show. The ‘Take it Away’ Team in the studio Timetables displaying what is on and when are up in form rooms and anyone with an in ternet connection can listen in Monday to Friday from 13.15 14.05 on the below link: www.radioxlbeal.blogspot.com The ’Game Over’ Team pose for a photo shoot Media Classes meet Harry Potter On March 11th 2014, two year eleven Media Classes went to visit the Warner Brothers Studio where they filmed all The Harry Potter Films. It was a sunny day and the pupils had a great time appreciating the scale of the pro duction which took place in this studio, As a media teacher, I was glad to see they displayed a lot of very detailed planning documents , storyboards and models. The pupils were very well be haved and gained a deeper in sight into the inner workings of the film industry. Year 9 Photography Workshop This year saw the introduction of the first ever Year 9 Photography workshop at Beal High school. It was designed to give students a ‘taster’ of the projects and skills they would explore when studying GCSE Photography. The students chosen to take part in this excit ing workshop began with a warm up activity of photographing the letters of the alphabet. This task was designed to get students to work in small groups and to explore the world around them to find appropriate imagery. Following on from this, students were then given the task of be coming studio photographers. They had to work out how to get the correct lighting to create dramatic shadows, how to use filters to create a warm or cold glow in their images and how to use dra matic angles to create stunning macro photographs inspired by the photographer Francis Bruguiere. After producing exciting photographic responses to Francis Brugui ere, the students then proceeded to learn about postproduction methods using Adobe Photoshop. This created dramatic results with students altering the contrast, hues and the surface texture of their photographs. All the results were amazing and just goes to show how the look of a photograph can change with just a click of a button on the computer! After a small break the students were introduced to the final task of the day — to create a moving image using stop motion photog raphy. This is the same process used by Nick Park in creating the Wallace and Gromit animations. Students worked in groups to create a story using a range of props such as cloth, children’s toys, cars and plastic fishes. They learnt how to create a moving image using a series of photo graphs, with some students taking over one hundred photographs, which were then converted into an animation using an IT pro gramme. The results proved to be humorous extensions of the stu dents’ imaginations in an animated form. COMIC CLUB Beal’s `Comic Club` has shown some excellent drawings and it is fabulous to see how Art is still used to develop leadership skills for AS students Farah and Saida even though they aren’t pursu ing Art as an AS Level. They have kindly offered their expertise to provide `Comic Club` for KS3 students every Thursday lunchtime as part of their Extra Curriculum. The Adventure Begins On the 18th October 2013, our Ge ography Class had the opportunity to visit Epping Forest. We went as a class, and we had the chance to go and study the Loughton Brook river, which travels through Epping Forest. We had to wear sensible clothing as we were going to be in water and mud! I wore wellingtons as they would help me when I was in the water or moving around. I also wore a raincoat as it was a very wet and damp day. arrived, we went to a small room and met our leaders. We completed some worksheets and also learnt some interest ing facts about Loughton Brook. After that we immedi ately rushed out as we could not wait to see the river. We grabbed our equipment and tools and we headed out. On our way to the river we took a look at a hard rock on the floor beneath us. Our leader dug it up using a special tool. The competition started at the beginning of January 2014. “Read for My School” is a really good and excit ing opportunity for many people who like to read. Many people have spent their lunch times at the library and af ter school to do some reading. Once we read a book, our score gradually got higher and higher. If we read one book, we got a £1.00 voucher. If we read another book, £1.00 goes to Children in Need On November 16th 2013, the day of Children in Need ar rived and the Year 7s gener osity switched on. Promises and deals began. The whole year group were determined to raise money and support the needy children. There were, perhaps, more than twenty opportunities to collect charity. Some books were really diffi cult but the books were varied for many different ages. As a class we read 366 books. This competition was money. Most of them definite ly required commitment to accom plish. A few of them were almost im possible — like being silent for the whole school day! Many people were worried about breaking their silence at the end of the day but they were surprised by the out come. The school held a non uniform day, but there was a mis chievous catch to it. We had to give £1 to come in nonuniform! Fantastic Times At Beal During my days at Beal High School, I have been interested in a lot of things but my favourite thing is Art Club. Art Club started on 18th November 2013. Many students have joined since. Supreme Court Trip On Valentine's day February 14th 2014 Mr Hatton took a group of year 11s to the Supreme Court, they had a tour then worked with lawyers from the court and justic es to prepare for and run a de bate in the Supreme Court's larg est courtroom. Here are some comments from those involved; 'The trip was an amazing experience which gave me a true insight into the world of the Supreme Court.' Riddhi Gondhia 'The Supreme Court was a motivating and inspiring trip which has widened my ho rizons. It has been a once in a lifetime opportunity to work with profes sional lawyers, sit in the justice's seats, take on their roles and have our own debates on points of law.' Anoop Naran. The year 8 team, who had two key runners missing, fin ished in 7th place, but showed great effort and persistence with out their full squad. The year 7 is becoming known as a talent ed athletics school, which is down to the amazing students competing at these events. Well done to all those pupils Trainee PE teachers meet famous Athletes The NELTA PE trainees had an inspirational Subject Knowledge training day at Lee Valley Athletics Centre on Monday November 25th 2013. Lee Valley is the training ground for the GB Athletes and, as usual, several of them came over to discuss their training and careers with our group. All of them said they had become professional ath letes as a result of a PE teacher spotting their talent. We met Adam Gemilli, who is expected to become the new Usain Bolt as he is already achieving outstanding times for 100m. We also met Jodie Williams who is a gold medalist in the 100m and 200m run. To actually be involved with athletes training at this level is so inspirational and I speak for all 17 trainee teachers when I say that they had a fantastic experience. This will, of course, cascade into their secondary school athletics teaching.
