CROFTON ACADEMY NEWS ISSUE 1 20 OCTOBER 2011 High Street, Crofton, Wakefield, WF4 1NF Tel: 01924 303940 | Web: www.croftonacademy.org.uk DESIGN SUCCESS MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER Congratulations to Joel McCormack (Y11) who won the White Rose Young Fashion Designer of the Year 2011. Joel was surprised to discover he had won the competition during an art lesson, when Real Radio’s Breakfast presenters Dixie and Gayle came into school to give him his prize, accompanied by the Face of White Rose Model Christelle, who was wearing the fantastic winning design. Joel won an all-expenses paid trip to London Fashion Week together with spending money and a cash prize, which we believe he spent on a camera. WELL DONE Welcome to our first newsletter as Crofton Academy. It’s been the usual busy and exciting start to the school year. The first term has seen many activities take place including some that you’ll read about in this newsletter. I have spent much of my time immersing myself in the school and have enjoyed seeing the students engaged with their learning. May I also take this opportunity to thank you again for your support regarding new uniform and patience in waiting for new stock. We are now fully stocked with all sizes. May I once again warn you against buying the inferior products on sale in Wakefield and only to buy through the school. I hope you all have a good break and look forward to the next half term and the run up to Christmas. Jez Horsley Headteacher ENGLAND CRICKET CALL UP Josh Shaw (Y11) has been invited and accepted for the 2011 intake of the England Development Programme (EDP). This is designed to help young players develop their ability to deliver excellent performances under the intense pressures created by playing for a Champions League T20 title, opening the bowling in the first Ashes Test match or coming in to bat at 70-5 in a World Cup semi-final. EDP’s aim is to dominate U19 cricket and produce a constant stream of world class players for the England Performance Programme. We are very proud of Josh and look forward to seeing him play for England in the future! OPEN EVENING SUCCESS The Academy held its annual Open Evening on Thursday 29 September. We opened our doors to parents/ guardians and pupils from our feeder schools together with those from further afield and we received lots of positive feedback from visitors. The school looked totally amazing and there was a great atmosphere throughout the evening. A huge thanks goes out to all those members of staff and pupils who took part during the evening and in its preparation. It was a huge success. SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL - INTERVIEW WITH FARAH RAJA (11ERA) Some of our pupils performed The Tempest as part of the Shakespeare School’s Festival at Wakefield Theatre Royal and Opera House on Tuesday 11 October. Thanks to the dedication and hard work of Miss Allsop and the pupils and staff involved, it was a massive success. Shelby Deal (Y11) undertook a lot voluntary marketing for this event and interviewed Farah Bashir, amongst others, about her part in the performance: What’s your character like, tell me a bit about it? I play the servant of Prospero and have to carry out certain magical tasks he requests. Such as creating a sea storm and transforming into a Harpy! So how do you become a Harpy? Well I have to sit on Tom’s shoulders so I look intimidating. At first I felt intimidated but I can’t wait for everyone to see it. I have huge wings made of material that the Nymphs hold up. Apparently I also get to wear claws but I haven’t seen them yet! What do you like about playing your character? The part where I transform into a Harpy. That’s one of the most exciting parts for me as I have to be really scary and I get to scream at some of the cast! What are you most looking forward to about the performance? I’m really intrigued to find out what costumers I’ll be wearing. But other than that I am just really excited to be on stage and show our friends and family what we’ve produced. How much time have your put into the performance? A lot of time and effort has gone into the performance. We’ve done a lot of after school rehearsals to prepare for it, and with how its coming along, it definitely proves our commitment to it. Each group undertook a range of team building exercises and had great fun. HOME SCHOOL COMMUNICATION We would just like to remind everyone of how important Parentmail is. 75% of all parents/guardians are now registered which is a great great contribution towards the school reducing our carbon footprint as well as being able to save money. This is the best way for us to communicate with parents/guardians. In the event of urgent news having to be sent home we can do this in an instant if you have registered your email address or mobile number. This is particularly helpful when your child is on a school trip and you want to know when they are on their way back to school and you are waiting to pick them up! It is also an essential tool for us to let you know when your child is not in school and gives you and opportunity to contact us to discuss unexplained absences. To sign up for Parentmail ask for a letter from School Reception. GREAT BRITAIN SUCCESS Leah Appleton (Y7) is a member of Wakefield Gymnastics Club, attending six training sessions a week, and is a member of the Elite Squad. Leah achieved a silver medal at the British Championships in March this year and has been selected to represent Great Britain at the forthcoming European Championships in Bulgaria. Leah will be competing over the next few days. We are sure you will join with us in wishing Leah and the rest of her team the very best with the competition and we look forward to hearing how she gets on after half term - we will keep you posted! LOST PROPERTY GEOGRAPHY QUIZ If you lose anything in school please see the Caretaker, whose office is at the end of the corridor near the top changing rooms. As more and more pupils are wearing cardigans and jumpers its important to ensure your name is in the label so if it’s lost it can be easily identified. Please try not to bring any valuables into school and if you do these are your responsibility, so please take care of them. During Open Evening visitors and pupils had the chance to win a box set of Horrible Geography Books by correctly naming the twenty seven European Countries from their flags along the Humanities Corridor. The winner was Kiera Lander a pupil in Year 7 WELL DONE KIERA A-LEVEL SUCCESS For the latest news and AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES (from 3:05pm) MONDAY: MONDAY Art Club; Homework Club Congratulations to ex-pupil Zack TUESDAY: TUESDAY Games Club; Film Club Cocker (2009) who left Pontefract WEDNESDAY: WEDNESDAY Homework Club NEW College this summer two A*s THURSDAY: THURSDAY Warhammer and two As in his A-Levels.
