Many walkways begin at the edge of the road, and there are natural hot springs at Hanmer and Maruia. Much of the trail is accompanied by the picturesque Waiau River, which has many great fishing spots as well as interesting flora and fauna on its banks. About halfway along the second section of trail on the opposite side of the river, the shelterbelts of the isolated Ada Homestead are visible.
