It also aims at training participants to be disciplined, self-reliant and altruistic, foster community partnership and consolidate relations between the state institutions and society and youth, he added. Earlier, the developer of the project, Marina Reef Real Estate Development stated that the master developer denied entry to its labourers to the project site at a crucial stage when the developer was all set to handover the apartments to their respective owners as 90 per cent of the work had been already over. T (Left) Security personnel of the Reef Island stopping the workers of the developer at the entrance, (Right) A human chain created to stop the entry of employees of one of the builders to the Reef Island Waleed Ebrahim Abdulaal Al Fahad, Managing Director of Marina Reef Real Estate Development earlier said, “We are incurring huge losses as we are prevented from completing our project. During the last two months we weren’t able to work on the project because we were denied entry of our buses, trucks and equipment at the island in order to complete the final stage works.” Denying the allegations, LTC said that the developer missed many deadlines, before the master developer of the island took decision to block the entry of labourers of Marina Reef Real Estate Development. In August 2009, the developers said that the project would be completed in April 2010. In 2013, press statements were issued by MCSA certificate to be given for 15 students Participants of the programme DT News Network Manama ahrain Technical College, the Bahrain Polytechnic (BP) in cooperation with the Think Smart institute has recently launched an advanced course in ‘network engineering’ attended by a total of 15 IT students from various levels. Students who complete the course will be provided with a Microsoft Certified Solution Associate (MCSA) certificate that qualifies them for several jobs opportunities like system administrator, system engineer, network analyst, technical consultant and others. B This course came as a result of a joint cooperation agreement which was recently signed between the two sides and under which they launched an Information Technology Academy. The academy aims at providing college students with a variety of IT professional certificates demanded by the Bahraini and regional labour markets, in addition to private lessons that are prerequisites for global professional certification. Think Smart Business Development Manager, Feras Al Saadi, said that the move to provide students with the MCSA certificate came as most of the government and private institutions are seeking cadres who are able to provide highlevel solutions using Microsoft products. “During the course, students will follow professional training methods that lead to a rapid development. The course was designed for managers of small networking and directors of the various information systems. All exams test capabilities and skills of network management among individuals, from which they can gain a deep knowledge and outstanding thought,” Al Saadi explained. PO Box: 50323, Fax :+973-17464844, the developer stating that the work would be completed by the end of 2014. But in April 2015, the Marina Reef building was listed as defective project requiring subsidies from the bank. On the other hand, on its website, Marina Reef made false promises by announcing project delivery by June 2015, said the master developer. The developer also missed the deadline of June 2015, before blocking the labourers of Marina reef from entering Reef Island in mid July, the t said. Currently, the building lacks necessary features and amenities. Constructing a top roof will take almost 10 months. All basic amenities such as water, electricity and sewage works are also not connected. Moreover the developer has not applied for these amenities. Completion of roof work needs at least six months. Under current status, it is impossible to split/divide/ deliver the building or its apartment to individuals, the master developer said. 6 IT’S A TREAT FOR THE EYES, AND ALSO FOR THE TONGUE Sunday, August 16, 2015 Cake-artist Ritu Gosain in an exclusive interview with DT News Santhosh Rajendran/DTNN Manama rincesses, animals, cartoon characters, and even minions. You name it, and Ritu Gosain would make and offer you delicious, colourful cakes in any shape. Mother of two and a qualified engineer, Ritu has a penchant for making artistic cakes. She started her own home-business Cakesbypassion in 2013 in Saar. In an exclusive interview with DT News, Ritu shared everything about her fascinating business. P How did you get involved in cake-artistry? Back in 2015, when I was in Canada, I got hooked to a couple of TV shows on cake-making. I started experimenting myself and everyone encouraged me to further my interest. In 2008, I made a themed cake for my daughter’s birthday, and from then on, there was no stopping. What is the process of making a cake design from start to finish? If making for a client, the process begins with discussion on the occasion and the amount of time I get. The theme for birthday is different from that required for a graduation party. Then I work on the shape, size, colour and overall design. Also, the time for drying is different for different fondants, so I have to manage the steps of making accordingly. Then comes the actual baking part, and finally the finishing work with all the design elements. Where do you find inspiration for the floral decorations on your cakes? Florals are tricky as the thickness and finish differ for different flowers. To me, inspiration comes in the process of making. I made the first floral cake for my husband for Valentines Day in 2013. What encouraged you to make cake-making a business? I don’t think of it as a business, to be honest. The day that happens, I think I will stop making cakes as I do now. I take orders only when I am excited about the client and the design and I don’t see it as a job. Most of my cakes are made as gifts for friends or their children. Also, I don’t use prints, which considerably lowers the price, unless the client asks for it, so my cakes are “real”. They look amazing and taste great. I don’t compromise on the quality of ingredients and I can honestly tell you that is my success secret! Can you share some tips for making beautiful designer cakes, while staying on a budget? That depends on the budget and the design. One must realize the main cost of custom-made cakes is not in the ingredients, but the labour that goes into it. A lot of hard work and detailing is done to make Princess Elsa figurine with her blue eyes and long hair, or to bring the naughty look on the Minion’s face. Sometimes I have to redo a lot if perfection is not attained. Do you have an all-time favourite design, or are you still working on your best cake? I would like to believe that I am working on my best cake because I feel that I am just a beginner. Whenever the client opens the box, and then hugs me with happiness, that becomes one of my favourite works. “I would like to believe that I am working on my best cake because I feel that I am just a beginner. He has already received admission to pursue master’s degree at London’s Royal College of Art. “It is not an easy task to get admission He was the youngest ever to participate and win a prize in the 40th annual Fine Arts Exhibition held at Bahrain T Salman Mubarak Alnajem Most of his paintings revolve around the theme of importance of individuality. “It is nothing but the ability of a person to freely express himself/herself raw without succumbing to the fear of judgment or conformtness,” he said Works by Salman in such a globally recognised institution. We have to send them our paintings. During interview, we have to explain about it. They consider our overall achievements in the field of art,” he said. He was so into drawing and painting since he was a child. As he grew up, the little hobby evolved itself to become something more serious. This was given special attention by his mother who encouraged him to go ahead in the field of painting. By the time Salman reached 16, he started taking painting seriously. When he entered into International Baccalaureate (IB) course at Bayan School in Isa Town, he chose art as his main subject. This is where his real tryst with painting began. After that painting became his life. His first art exhibition was held about six years ago at Al Riwaq Gallery in Adliya. During the exhibition, many senior artists of the Kingdom recognised his talent and patted his back. “Many senior artists told me that my art is totally a new breed which is new in Bahrain. This was because my style was completely different from others,” Salman said. Afterwards, he took part in more than 10 art exhibitions. Out of them, three were at international levels. Moreover, he was the youngest ever to participate and win a prize in the 40th annual Fine Arts Exhibition held at Bahrain Museum. Currently he is preparing for two international exhibitions. The first exhibition will be held on September 18 at Serbelloni Palace in Italy, where the Milan Fashion Week takes place. The second exhibition would be in November in Washington. Most of his paintings revolve around the theme of importance of individuality. “It is nothing but the ability of a person to freely express himself/herself raw without succumbing to the fear of judgment or conformtness,” he said. In the meantime, Salman tries to pay enough attention to glorious past as he is concentrating on the issue of modernising the significant past. “Culture is an important element. I want to modernise it. I want to work with the future, taking into account the glorious past,” he said. Apart from painting, Salman is also designing a women’s bracelet called ‘#JIRI2A’ that is due to launch soon. The bracelet embodies two themes: Modernising traditions and adding significance to the insignificant. Salman has high ambitions in the field of art. After finishing his masters in London, he wants to establish himself at the global level. “The more I am recognised internationally, the more the arts of Bahrain and Bahrain in general will be recognised,” said Salman, who uses yellow line at the bottom of his every painting as his signature. 9 Sunday, August 16, 2015 RESPONSE RATE TOUCHES 90PC IN JULY DT News Network Manama he success rate of responses to the calls received by the Contact Centre of Ministry of Housing reached 90.24 per cent in July, following the ministry’s efforts to enhance communication with citizens. However, demand in Europe and the US grew, driven by a mixture of increasingly confident jewellery buyers and strong demand for bars and coins. Looking ahead, there are encouraging signs moving into what are traditionally the busiest quarters for gold buying in India and China. Overall jewellery demand was down 14 pc to 513t, from 595t in 2014 due to falls in consumer spending in Asia. In China, slowing economic growth and a rallying stock market led to a 5pc fall in demand to 174t. In India, the heavy unseasonal rains in Q1 and drought in Q2 impacted rural incomes and affected gold demand. In addition, a dearth of auspicious days for marriages in Q3 meant that wedding-related demand was unusually slow, leading to a fall in jewellery demand of 23pc to 118t. Overall, if we look at the picture for the first half of this year in India, jewellery was down 3pc to 268.8t from 276.1t (H1 2014). The US remained steady, with jewellery demand up for the sixth consecutive quarter by2pc(26t). In Europe demand was also up,with Germany up 7pc and the UK and Spain both growing by 6pc. Global investment demand was down 11pc to 179t from 200t in Q2 2014. India was the main driver of the fall, down 30pc to 37t, due to uncertain price expectations and a buoyant stock market. This was countered by a rise in Chinese bar and coin demand, up 6pc to 42t.In Europe, fears of a potential Greek exit from the eurozone saw retail investment in gold reach 47t, a rise of 19pc compared to last year. The US also saw strong demand, with retail investment increasing by 7pc. Of particular note was the huge burst of activity in June, when bullion coin sales by the US Mint hit a 17-month high. Elsewhere,Central banks continued to be strong buyers of gold. Net official sector purchases totalled 137t, with Russia and Kazakhstan the biggest purchasers. Although a year-on-year fall of 13pc, buying increased by 11pc when compared with the first quarter of this year. It is the 18th consecutive quarter where central banks were net Gold demand and supply statistics for Q2 2015 • Overall demand was down 12pc in Q2 2015 to 915t compared to 1,038t in Q2 2014. • Total consumer demand – made up of jewellery demand and coin and bar demand – totalled 715t, down 14pc compared to Q2 2014. • Global jewellery demand was 513t, down 14pc compared to the same period last year, due to falls in China, down 5pc to 174t, as well as India, down 23pc to 118t. The US and Europe saw continued growth with the US up 2pc to 26t, and Europe up 1pc to 15t. • Total investment demand was down 11pc to 179t, compared to 200t in the same quarter the previous year. Demand for bars and coins saw a 15pc drop to 201t from 238t the previous year, as the sector was affected by an expected increase in US interest rates and a continued shift towards other asset classes, notably equities. ETFs saw outflows totalling 23t, lower than the outflows of 38t seen in the same quarter last year. • Central bankscontinued to be strong buyers of gold, accounting for 137t in Q2 2015, slightly down on the equivalent quarter last year, but up 11pc compared to the previous quarter. It was the 18th consecutive quarter where central banks were net purchasers. • Year-on-year quarterly mine production increased 3pc to 787t in Q2 2015, against 763t in Q2 2014. Recycling levels were down 8pc year-on-year to 251t compared to 273t in Q2 2014, resulting in total supply falling 5pc to 1,033t. purchasers of gold. Total supply was down 5pc to 1,033t, as an increase in mine production of 3pc to 787t in Q2 2015 was offset by declining recycling levels - down 8pc to 251t. The indication for H2 2015 is that mine production will slow as the gold mining industry continues to manage their costs and optimise operations in the face of challenging markets. Alistair Hewitt, Head of Market Intelligence at the World Gold Council, said: “It’s been a challenging market for gold this quarter, particularly in Asia, on the back of falls in India and China. The reverse is true for western jewellery markets, as increased economic confidence led to continued growth in consumer demand. It is fair to say that investment demand for the quarter remained muted given the continuing recovery in the US economy and booming stock markets in India and China during the quarter. Jewellery market prospects look healthier for the remainder of the year with the upcoming wedding and festival season in India. In addition, falls in the gold price have historically triggered buying in price sensitive markets and we are already seeing early indications of this across Asia and the Middle East. Conversely, sharp falls in Chinese stock markets have shaken the largely consumer investment base and we are seeing early indications of interest in buying gold again - all illustrating the unique self balancing nature of gold demand and the diverse drivers which underpin it.” CIB adopts Intellect Custody Solution I ntellect Design Arena Limited, a specialist in applying true Digital Technologies across Banking & Insurance, announced that Commercial International Bank (CIB) the largest private-sector bank in Egypt, has gone live with Intellect Custody Solution. (Continuation of Part 1) he summer break is a good opportunity to know more about Kingdom of Bahrain, you can do various educational visits to enjoy the site and in the same time learn some new things. Given below are some places you may like to visit this summer: Arad Fort: Arad Fort is a 15th century fort and one of the more important historic monuments of Bahrain. It is located on Muharraq Island near the airport. During its history, it served as a base for various foreign occupiers of Bahrain, including the Portuguese in the 16th century and the Omanis around 1800. The square shape with big circular towers at the corners is typical of the local military architecture. Besides beach rock, (coral limestone) mainly palm tree wood was used for construction; nearby wells provided for fresh water. This fort controlled the navigation between a small island and the main Bahrain Island. Bahrain Fort: Bahrain Fort (or Qala’at al-Bahrain in Arabic) is a 16th century fortress built by the Portuguese during the times T when they dominated trade routes in the Indian Ocean. This fort is one of several built in Bahrain and around the Arabian Gulf to protect these trade routes. It has been nicely restored and is open to visitors. Just outside the fort is a partially excavated ancient settlement from the Dilmun civilisation, which goes back at least 2000 years. In 2005, the Bahrain Fort and the Dilmun excavations were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Barbar Temple: The Barbar temple is 5000 year old and the ancient sites in Bahrain centre round the Dilmun societies centuries ago. The ruins of the Barbar Temple date back to the third millennium BC, to the days when the god Enki was in high esteem as the god of water and Earth and sometimes creation itself. The Temple is a small cluster of stone wall foundations. There are three temples roughly 500 years apart, built on adjacent foundations. Archaeologists would love it, but the common person would get bored in 5 minutes. Make your summer vacation a fun learning moment and discover the culture, people, trade and history of Bahrain. Invite your friends, classmate and even family members to make it more meaningful. Summer doesn’t mean we need to have a break from learning and it’s all about fun. Why not have both? Enjoy! Adding to the downward pressure has been a “clearly bearish” outage at a BP refinery in the Midwestern state of Indiana, depressing crude demand, said Andy Lipow, head of Houston consultancy Lipow Oil Associates. Also Friday, the Department of Commerce confirmed that it approved crude exports from the US to Mexico in exchange for an unspecified “similar” quantity of Mexican crude, a senior administration official said. Lipow said the move could lead to the export of 100,000 barrels of crude from heavily-supplied areas of the US and would be “supportive” of prices. The policy could also be “another crack in the wall” to permit oil exports, he said. But Matt Smith, director of commodity research at ClipperData, said Friday’s rise in US prices was primarily technical rather than a response to news of the US-Mexico oil swap. However, a full-fledged lifting of the US oil export ban would be impactful, he added. “It is a newsworthy development but it’s not necessarily a price mover at this point,” Smith said. 24 BUSINESS Sunday, August 16, 2015 Greek PM faces revolt after eurozone vote THIRD TROUBLE TO TSIPRAS Athens reek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras was yesterday battling a major revolt amongst members of his radical-left party who oppose the third huge bailout for the crisis-hit G COUNTRY/CURRENCIES SOUTH AFRICAN RAND US DOLLARS CANADIAN DOLLAR PERUVIAN NUEVO SOL INDIAN RUPEE BANGLADESH TAKA CHINESE YUAN HONG KONG DOLLAR INDONESIAN RUPIAH JAPANESE YEN KOREAN WON SRI LANKAN RUPEE MALAYSIAN RINGGIT NEPALESE RUPEE PHILIPPINE PESO PAKISTAN RUPEE SINGAPORE DOLLAR THAI BAHT AUSTRALIAN DOLLAR NEW ZEALAND DOLLAR EURO SWISS FRANC CZECH KORUNE BRITISH POUND TURKISH LIRA SAUDI RIYAL UAE DIRHAMS QATAR RIYAL KUWAITI DINAR OMANI RIYAL EGYPTIAN POUND JORDANIAN DINAR LEBANESE POUND MOROCCAN DIRHAMS SYRIAN POUND YEMENI RIYAL country. The green light for the deal, designed to stop Athens from defaulting on its huge debts and crashing out of the euro, came hours after Greece’s parliament voted through the agreement after a bitter allnight debate. A third of MPs in Tsipras’ radical-left party Syriza rebelled against him and he only managed to win the vote with opposition help – prompting fresh expectations that he will be forced to call early elections. But Tsipras insisted the bailout was in Greece’s best interests, saying: “The agreement will advance Greece by making its financial system more stable, starting right now.” ‘Looked into the abyss’ Syriza swept to power in January on a wave of public anger against steep tax rises, spending cuts and reforms demanded by Athens’ creditors – the EU, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund – in exchange for two previous bailouts. Critics accuse Tsipras of caving to blackmail from the creditors in agreeing to more painful reforms in exchange for badly-needed cash. European Commission head Jean-Claude Juncker said Athens had come perilously close to tumbling out of the eurozone and into the unknown, but six months of fraught negotiations had paid off. “Together, we have looked into the abyss. But today, I am glad to say that all sides have respected their commitments. Greece is living up to its ambitious reform commitments,” he said in a statement after six hours of gruelling talks in Brussels Friday. Greece will receive a first Alexis Tsipras (File) instalment of 13 billion euros next week, helping cover a debt payment due to the ECB next Thursday. Bullion holdings stood at 1,677.30 tonnes at the end of July, Xinhua said citing the People’s Bank of China (PBoC), a 1.16 per cent increase on June’s 1,658 tonnes. The rise is worth nearly $700 million, according to Friday’s price of $1,118.25 an ounce on C the London Bullion Market. The PBoC issued gold reserve figures last month for the first time since April 2009, revealing a rise of 57pc over the past six years. China is the world’s largest producer of the yellow metal, but the increase marked a slowdown in gold accumulation after holdings jumped 75pc from 2003 to 2009. China ranks fifth globally in gold holdings, according to leading. The price of gold reached record highs near $1,800 in 2012 at the height of the United States’s bond-buying stimulus programme and the eurozone debt crisis, before falling significantly. But the yellow metal is considered a safe bet in times of turmoil and uncertainty, and it rose last week after China devalued its yuan currency, raising concerns over the health of the world’s second-largest economy. Beijing said the move was the result of switching to a more market-oriented method of calculating the daily reference rate which sets the value of the yuan. cash after panicked customers flocked to withdraw their money. Arab Bank settles US litigation New York rab Bank has reached a settlement with hundreds of US victims of attacks in Israel and the Palestinian territories who filed a lawsuit accusing the bank of supporting terrorism. A spokesperson for the bank confirmed to AFP that an agreement had been reached, but provided no details of the settlement. The amount of the settlement was not immediately revealed. One of the lawyers for the plaintiffs, Michael Elsner, confirmed an agreement had been reached to settle the litigation. “The framework will be finalized over the next few months,” he said. The forces backing exiled President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi have been aided by troops and materiel from Yemen’s wealthy Gulf neighbours, as Saudi-led coalition warplanes pound rebel positions. The rebels handed over Shabwa to government forces and withdrew after being promised a safe route out of the province, a military official said. Other sources confirmed the pull-out. “The province was handed over” to the Southern F Movement, a secessionist group whose militants have been fighting in loyalist ranks, said Salem al Awlaqi, a political activist in Shabwa. Officials said the pro-rebel governor of Shabwa, which has substantial oil reserves, had fled as loyalists prepared to enter the province. They also accused the rebels of booby-trapping government buildings before fleeing, as they had done in other provinces. As the rebels began entering neighbouring Baida province, Saudi-led coalition warplanes hit their convoys, destroying 13 military vehicles and leaving dead and wounded, military officials said. The sources could not immediately provide a casualty toll. Laden took part in attacks in Pakistan and Afghanistan as early as ten years ago. Loyalist forces in the south launched an offensive last month against the rebels, forcing them out of main southern city Aden. They subsequently retook Daleh, Lahj and Abyan provinces. The advance is heading toward third city Taez, southwest of Sanaa, which analysts regard as the gateway to the capital, overrun by the rebels in September. Tripoli slamic State group jihadists have beheaded 12 people and hung them on crosses during a battle for the coastal city of Sirte, the national news agency LANA reported yesterday. The fighting for control of Sirte, hometown of slain dictator Moamer Kadhafi, has been raging since Tuesday, with one top Libyan diplomat warning of a “massacre” in the city. LANA said the 12 people beheaded were local gunmen who had been battling IS in the eastern Sirte district known as “neighbourhood three”. The agency also reported that IS militants executed 22 other Sirte residents who had taken up arms against the jihadist group as they lay wounded in a city hospital. Mass evacuation begins amid further blasts Tianjin esidents around the site of giant chemical explosions in the Chinese port of Tianjin were evacuated yesterday over fears of highly poisonous sodium cyanide, state media said, as fresh blasts were heard and the death toll rose to 104. A day-long fire intensified at the hazardous goods storage facility and the series of new explosions sent a thick black column of smoke into the air, the official Xinhua news agency said. The decision to relocate R anyone within three kilometres (1.9 miles) of the site came three days after gigantic explosions sent a huge fireball soaring into the sky and left a vast swathe of destruction. It also came despite official assurances that the disaster had not released dangerous levels of toxic substances into the environment. “Residents in a relocation site of the blasts have been evacuated in fear of chemical pollutants in the air,” Xinhua said. Armed police were carrying out the evacuation after sodium cyanide was found at the site, the Beijing News said. At a barrier on the edge of the evacuation zone masks were distributed to emergency personnel and police turned back anyone else, as at least 20 fire engines streamed in. The area itself was already largely deserted, many of the buildings within it ruined, and an acrid smell hung in the air. Officials said earlier that specialists from sodium cyanide producers were being sent in to the devastated industrial area where the blasts occurred. Reports have said there could have been as much as 700 tonnes of the substance exposure to which can be fatal - at the site. Soldiers trained in antichemical warfare techniques were also deployed. Authorities have struggled to identify the substances present at the scene, sparking fears and scepticism among residents of Tianjin, which has a population of 15 million. In an address from Delhi’s Red Fort, Modi sought to silence growing doubts about his leadership after key reforms stalled in a rancorous parliament session dogged by allegations of corruption involving some of his top lieutenants. Modi also warned against the “poison” of communalism in a wide-ranging speech that lasted for more than an hour. But it was his comments on the dangers posed by corruption that drew most attention, including his admission that the problem went right to the top. “I want to reaffirm that this nation will get rid of corruption. We can rid the country of corruption, we have to start from the top,” said Modi. “Corruption is like a termite, it spreads slowly, reaches everywhere, but it can be beaten with timely injections.” Modi’s speech comes after some of the most senior figures in his Bharatiya Janata Party became embroiled in P corruption scandals, including Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj and the chief ministers of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh states. to the disclosure of around one billion dollars in hitherto hidden assets which will now be liable to tax. Power for villages The right-wing premier, who has been accused of being too close to big business, portrayed himself as a champion of the poor by promising to help farmers and lower-caste dalits, formerly known as untouchables. Modi set a 1,000-day deadline for every village in India to get electricity, urging state governments which are responsible for power to ensure every community is finally linked to the national grid. “Even after so many decades of independence there are 18,500 villages in India which do not have electricity,” he said. “I appeal to the states and all other stakeholders to connect these villages with electricity system within 1,000 days.” Frequently mopping his brow on a swelteringly hot day, Modi said he had striven to enable 170 million people to open bank accounts for the first time under a government-run scheme. “The poor are at bottom of the pyramid of development and we have to strengthen the base of the pyramid. If they are empowered, no one can stop us,” Modi added. Mohamed Morsi’s lawyers appeal against death sentence in Egypt Cairo awyers representing the ousted Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi have filed an appeal against his death sentence and prison term. Morsi, who was toppled by the army in July 2013, was sentenced to death in June for allegedly participating in prison breaks and violence against police, and to life in prison for espionage. Morsi was detained without charge during the initial days of the 2011 uprising against the country’s veteran leader Hosni Mubarak, and escaped along with thousands of others after protesters attacked police stations across the country. He had faced no legal action for leaving the prison either before or during his tenure as president, which began in June 2012. Alexandre de Moraes, head of the Sao Paulo state security department, announced the death tally - originally placed at 19 – on Friday after media reports of a deliberate massacre in the suburbs, possibly by rogue police. The murders were shocking even in a country used to runaway violence. “What I can say for sure is that it’s the biggest killing this year,” de Moraes said. Eric Dier put Tottenham ahead after 19 minutes and Nacer Chadli added a second on the cusp of half-time before substitutions on both sides turned the game. Tottenham lost focus after the departure of Harry Kane and Stoke were given new impetus by the introduction of Joselu and, especially, Stephen Ireland. A foul on Joselu by Toby Alderweireld gave Stoke a way back into the game, Marko Arnautovic converting the penalty, and it was Ireland’s cross that Mame Biram Diouf headed home to level the scores. Stoke’s first chance was a gift from returning Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, who miskicked an attempted pass out of his penalty area straight to Diouf. The Senegal forward attempted to return it with interest, but his hard, low shot was blocked by a combination of Ryan Mason and the goalkeeper. Mason had a fierce goalbound shot headed away by Marc Muniesa after 18 minutes following a lapse by Arnautovic, who had failed to follow Kyle Walker’s run. But it only delayed the entry of the ball into Stoke’s net as Eriksen’s corner from the left was glanced in at the near post by the head of Dier. The visitors needed to reply, but they were getting very little from some of their big names. Lloris reflex save Ibrahim Afellay was invisible in midfield, while Arnautovic looked uninterested unless the ball was at his feet. They were lucky not to fall further behind after 36 minutes when a long pass from Eriksen set Chadli away, but his touch was heavy and he ran the ball harmlessly into the arms of Butland. Spurs could not afford to think the match was already won, though, as Arnautovic reminded them three minutes before the interval when he exchanged passes with Marco van Ginkel and sent a low, left-foot shot across goal. Two minutes later, Lloris pulled off an astonishing reflex save to repel Diouf’s closerange header from Jonathan Walters’ nodded pass.
