Strong and Healthy!
CarotoMax® and OsteoMatrix™ Can Help You to Strengthen Your Body!
If you’re like most vitamin supplement
users, you may have heard about the risks
of toxicity associated with increased levels
of vitamin A. This can be a difficult
struggle, as vitamin A still has many health
benefits. Did you know that taking a
supplement with beta carotene will deliver
vitamin A to your body without the risks of
toxicity? It’s true! In 1928, Dr. B von Euler
discovered that one of the carotenes, beta
carotene, was the precursor, or pro-vitamin,
for active forms of vitamin A. Beta carotene
is converted to vitamin A as the body needs
it. You can have all the benefits of vitamin
A without the risk!
What is a Carotene?
A carotene is a substance found in
nature which contains an orange photosynthetic pigment that plays an important role
in the photosynthesis process. It comes in
several forms; but the two primary forms
are alpha-carotene and beta-carotene. Beta
carotene, the more
popular of the two, is broken down by the
mucosa of the small intestine and
converted to retinal, which is a form of
vitamin A. The carotene can then be
stored in the liver and be used as
needed by the body. This storage
capability makes beta carotene a
pro-vitamin.
According to the Encyclopedia
of Natural Medicine by Michael
Murray, N.S., and Joseph
Pizzorno, N.D., “Numerous population
studies have repeatedly demonstrated that a high intake of
carotene-rich fruits and
vegetables reduces the risk
of cancer, heart disease and
stroke. Over 600 carotenoids have been
characterized, including 30-50 that the body
can transform into vitamin A.”
Sources of Carotenes
Some of the best sources for carotenes
can come from a healthy diet enriched with
green leafy vegetables, yellow-orange
fruits, and foods such as carrots, apricots,
spinach, cilantro, pumpkin, broccoli,
mangoes, yams, squash, legumes, grains,
and seeds.
Vitamin A in your body
Carotene compounds have been found
to have no deleterious effects in the body,
and they relieve the worry about toxicity
associated with vitamin A intake. According
to the Centers for Disease Control, men in
the United States typically only get 6% of
their daily recommended value of vitamin A
from their diet, and women get only about
56%. Vitamin A is needed for important
bodily functions and can help to promote
overall health and wellness. Vitamin A…
• Assists in body tissue growth and
repair
• Maintains healthy night vision
• Promotes the healthy growth
and maintenance of bones
and teeth
• Maintains health
and stability of
skin mucous
membranes
throughout the
body, especially
those in the digestive,
respiratory, and reproductive
tracts
• May work as an antioxidant
to protect the integrity of
cells against harmful
elements in the environment
There have been many studies on the
effects of vitamin A on the body, and these
continue to show a link between cancer
protection and adequate blood levels of
vitamin A. There have also been clinical
studies using carotene supplements which
have shown a positive effect on the
immune function of both HIV-positive and
AIDS patients. In addition, vitamin A
appears to aid in the fight against cervical
dysplasia (an abnormal cell growth on the
cervix), which
can lead to
cancer. Studies
have found a
decrease in this
type of cancer
when higher
levels of
carotenes have
been found in
the body.

Healthy Bones: A Foundation for a Healthy Life!
There are over 44 million Americans
who are at risk of, or are living with,
osteoporosis. This disease affects over 50%
of all post-menopausal women, and some of
them suffer from osteo-related fractures in
their lifetime. Osteoporosis also affects
men, especially those over fifty; in fact,
according to the National Osteoporosis
Foundation, nearly one-third of all hip
fractures occur in men. Other groups
susceptible to osteoporosis include teens
and young adults. Osteoporosis can occur at
any age as the result of poor nutrition, poor
health, and bone-affecting medications.
Osteoporosis is a disease that affects the
bones, breaking them down and causing
them to be more likely to break and more
difficult to heal. When osteoporosis is
present, bone mineral density is reduced and
the micro-architecture of the bones is
damaged. Also, the amount and variety of
non-collagenous bone proteins is altered,
causes the bones to be brittle and fragile.
In many cases, osteoporosis can be
prevented with a healthier lifestyle and
awareness about the disease. Things you can
do to prevent osteoporosis include:
• Stop tobacco use. Tobacco inhibits
activity of osteoblasts, and is an independent risk factor in osteoporosis.
• Maintain a healthy weight. Too low a
body mass index (BMI) can cause bones to
break down, leaving them brittle and fragile.
A BMI which is too high can place too
much weight and added pressure on bones.
• Practice a healthy diet. Diet can aid in the
consumption and absorption of essential
nutrients necessary for proper bone health.
Vitamins such as D and K, as well as
adequate calcium, are necessary to keep
bones strong and healthy.
• Treat alcoholism. Alcohol consumption
increases parathyroid hormone levels,
which play a significant role in reducing
the body’s calcium supply. Alcohol also
interferes with vitamin D production,
which is essential for bone health.
• Avoid heavy metals. Metals such as
cadmium (a substance used in batteries
and pigments—primarily in plastic
products) can result in loss of bone
mineral density.
Shaklee’s OsteoMatrix™
Shaklee’s OsteoMatrix™ provides the
body with essential nutrients that do more
than simply providing the body with
additional calcium. The special formula is
combined with other nutrients such as
vitamins K and D, boron, magnesium, zinc,
copper and manganese all which help in the
promotion of healthy bones and teeth.
Calcium is an essential nutrient which
helps to strengthen bones and teeth.
Shaklee’s OsteoMatrix™ contains 1,000mg
of calcium, 100% of the daily recommended value. A meta-analysis conducted
by the International Cochrane Collaboration found in two randomized control trials
that calcium “might contribute to a moderate degree to the prevention of adenomatous colonic polyps.” Other studies found
possible anti-carcinogenic effects in
vitamin D supplementation. An observational study found that high calcium and
vitamin D intake was associated with lower
risk of developing premenopausal breast
cancer.
Interestingly enough, the United States
has one of the highest rates of dairy
consumption and calcium intake, yet one of
the highest rates of osteoporosis. Calcium
depends on other vitamins, such as
vitamins D and K, magnesium, zinc,
copper, and manganese to build bones to
their strongest and healthiest potentials.
Shaklee’s OsteoMatrix™ is one of the only
leading brands to incorporate all of these
essential nutrients into small, easy-toswallow, non-chalky, coated tablets.
The nutrient-packed formula in
Shaklee’s OsteoMatrix™ not only supports
bone and teeth health, but delivers these
added benefits to your body:
• Helping maintain a
normal blood pressure
• Assisting in muscle
contraction and nerve
transmission
• Reducing PMS
symptoms, such as
bloating, cramps,
water retention,
irritability, and
moodiness
• Limit soft drinks. Phosphoric acid
OsteoMatrix™
found in soda increases the risk of
osteoporosis and drinking soda instead
of calcium-rich drinks compounds the
problem.

Shaklee’s Fiber Plan
®
Fiber plays a key role in the promotion
of good health. Fiber works by absorbing
and holding moisture in the digestive
system, acting as a sponge to make the
contents of the colon softer and bulkier.
Waste materials spend less time in the
colon, and pass through more easily, which
reduces pressure in the colon. Fiber also
reduces problems with constipation and
diverticulitis (a weakening of the walls of
the large intestine) by softening and easing
passage of waste materials. While transit
time through the colon is increased, fiber
reduces the opportunity for harmful effects
from certain drugs, food additives, chemicals and toxic materials which are
produced by naturally occurring bacteria in
the large intestine.
A diet high in fiber may also lower
blood cholesterol levels by simply reducing
the transit time of dietary cholesterol
through the gastrointestinal tract, which
reduces the absorption of cholesterol from
foods. Products such as Shaklee’s Fiber
Plan® products, which are rich in fiber and
low in fat, may play an essential role in
lowering blood cholesterol levels, controlling blood sugar, and aiding in the digestive process.
Two different types of fiber exist:
insoluble and soluble. Both are important
in maintaining proper health. Foods
such as bran may seem to be rich
in fiber, but they still do not
provide all the
types of fiber your body needs. The FDA
recommends 25 grams of fiber per day for a
2,000 calorie diet; however, the typical
American consumes only about half that
amount.
Insoluble fiber is found in whole grain
products, fresh fruit, and vegetables. It
provides bulk and makes elimination easier
by preventing constipation. Some studies
have suggested that diets high in insoluble
fiber and low in fat may help alleviate
various gastrointestinal disorders as well as
possibly reduce certain associated cancers.
Soluble fiber is found in oat bran and
dried beans, and tends to slow the release of
food from the stomach. This process helps
keep blood sugar levels stable, which helps
to avoid fatigue and weakness associated
with low blood sugar.
Shaklee Fiber Plan® Unflavored
This unflavored mix provides more
soluble fiber than any other natural food.
One serving of Fiber Plan contains the same
amount of fiber (4 grams) as 20 slices of
whole wheat bread, 14 prunes, 6 apples, 5
oat bran muffins, 4.5 cups of carrots, or 3.5
bowls of oatmeal! In addition to showing
some love to your digestive system, a glass
of Shaklee Fiber Plan® before a meal can
help you feel satisfied and less likely to eat
high-cholesterol and fatty foods!

Are You Getting Enough Magnesium?
Shaklee’s VitalMag™
If you’re like most people, getting
adequate amounts of magnesium every day
is probably not on your top priority list.
Although often times overlooked, magnesium contributes to and is a necessary factor
in over 300 biochemical processes within
the body. It helps to keep a steady heart
rhythm, retain and maintain normal blood
pressure, support immune functions, keep
bones strong, and alleviate symptoms of
PMS. Fifty-percent of the body’s magnesium is found in the bones, making magnesium an essential part of bone health. The
other 50 percent is found in body tissues
and organs. There has also been a recent
increased interest in determining what role
magnesium plays in preventing and
managing hypertension, cardiovascular
disease, and diabetes.
Natural sources of magnesium are
often times depleted by processes such as
water softening and food processing;
therefore, eight out of ten Americans get
less than the daily recommended value
of magnesium. Shaklee’s VitalMag™
contains a proprietary blend of magnesium, boron, and potassium to deliver
the most effective amounts of magnesium to your body. Boron aids in bone
metabolism and magnesium utilization, while potassium aids in nerve
transmission. The formula also contains
Shaklee’s unique delivery system, which
is easy on the stomach and digestive
system. The gel-diffusion delivery
system gently releases nutrients into the
body over a four to six-hour period.
This helps to prevent an upset stomach,
which is common in many other
magnesium supplements.
