PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Nga mihi nui te whanau o Craighead. Tena koutou katoa.
Integrity has been the value that we chose to focus on in
Term Two and we have seen lots of examples of integrity in
action. We are very much looking forward to focussing on
“Community” for Term Three, as connecting with our
community is one of our key school-wide goals for 2015. There are already lots
of examples of this happening both in school and out in the wider community,
such as our Art students participating in the Grantlea Downs School Art Fair.
They ran workshops and showed the Grantlea Downs senior students how to
produce a poster using the Sketchbook X application. Boarding students
continue to raise funds for communities affected by Natural Disasters by
donating useful goods, holding coin trails and running sausage sizzles.
Old Girl Genevieve Steven, who attended Craighead from 2008-12, spoke at our
Assembly about her ‘journey’ upon leaving school. Genevieve started up
TeenAg at Craighead and has gone on to continue her involvement with Young
Farmers as a member of the National Executive. Now a student at Lincoln
University as a DairyNZ Scholarship recipient, Genevieve is a wonderful
example of a young woman who has used her initiative and made the most of
every small opportunity that has come her way. She credits her time at
Craighead as giving her the courage to take up the opportunities that present
themselves. We look forward to hearing more from other Old Girls in the
future.
Term Two continues to be very busy and we have had a number of students
compete in regional Cross-Country events. There were some stunning individual
performances at the Aoraki Cross-Country held in perfect conditions on the
steep Mountainview course and at the Primary Schools’ Cross Country at Waihi.
Congratulations to all those who ran and completed these challenging courses.
Congratulations also to the Netball and Basketball girls who have been selected
for South Canterbury Representative Teams.
Congratulations to Rock Band “Bitter Class” who competed in the Rockquest
last week, and to The Asplmayr Trio who competed in the regional Chamber
Music Contest. Ruby Fraser was awarded the Women’s Musicianship prize and
then Bitter Class was delighted to find that they have been invited to compete
in the Rockquest semi-finals. Our Chorale and
two Choirs are down to the final days of
preparation for the Big Sing, to be held in
Dunedin this Friday. We wish all those
students and staff involved all the best as
they have worked very hard to refine their
skills.

Thank you to all those who attended the very special Boarding Parents
dinner last Friday. The evening was a great success and it was a
pleasure to talk to so many Parents, Grandparents and Caregivers. Our
entertainers were well received and we have had many compliments
on their performances.

Meet Jessica Gale—Tonga Deputy House Leader
I began my Craighead experience as a fresh Year 9,
tentative about what lay ahead. I quickly realised
that most of my year group were feeling the same
way. I soon began to feel part of the family
environment that is so apparent at our school and I
made many friends who have supported me
throughout the journey we have followed together. I have made the
most of the many opportunities offered at Craighead by participating
in Volleyball, Badminton, Cricket, Hockey, Debating, and Choir, to
name a few. This has helped shape me into the confident and capable
Year 13 student that I am now, tackling the oncoming challenges of
my last year at Craighead, and given me the skills I need to support
Anna Ou, our Tonga House Leader.
Anna and I have worked hard together to help Tonga stay on top of
the leader board. I have gained many life skills from helping support
Anna and working with her to organise and support Tonga House, as
we try and lead our house to victory. I look forward to the remainder
of my final year at Craighead.

CROSS COUNTRY
Last Friday, the Aoraki Secondary Schools’ Cross
Country was hosted by Mountainview High School,
with the course being set over rolling countryside
behind the school. Congratulations to the following
girls who were placed competing in this challenging
race:

On Tuesday, eight Year 7 and 8s competed in the South Canterbury
Primary Schools’ Cross Country at Waihi School. The girls had to run 3km
around the school and down near the river bed, climbing over four large
hay bales around the course. Congratulations to Nicole Arundell who was
second in the Year 8 Girls’ race. She will go on to compete in the South

SISS SQUASH—The Craighead Squash team of Lily Rae,
Simone Bruce and Emilie Agnew competed in the South
Island Squash Tournament held in Timaru last weekend.
Up against tough competition, Craighead was placed
fifth, and had an enjoyable tournament.
BREAD-MAKING MASTERCLASS
Recently, a group of girls
participated in a very
successful bread making
course run by Kerina, our
Kitchen Manager. The girls
thoroughly
enjoyed
themselves and Kerina felt
it was successful enough to
run further courses!

Last Sunday, the Craighead Shooting team began their
quest for glory in the 2015 Trap Shooting season at
Darfield. The outstanding performance came from
Kaitlin Watson (right), taking first place in Single Rise
and second in Single Barrel. Special thanks to Mrs Lisa
Crisp and Mr Robert Harris for providing transport and
support. The team is:

GEOGRAPHY
Year 13 Geographers had
an investigation trip to
Caroline Bay last week. The
students are interviewing
members of the public for
their
research,
to
determine whether there
should be a cafe at
Caroline Bay.
YEAR 7 READERS’ THEATRE
Recently, Year 7 have been
working in groups of 4-5
doing a reading task called
Readers’ Theatre. It is like
acting
but
with
no
movement, only your voice
expressing the story. We
practised for a few weeks
and then performed for the
Year 8s and Ms Graham.

Rockquest—Congratulations to Ruby and
Charlotte Fraser, members of the band, Bitter
Class, who have been selected to proceed on to
the semi-finals of Rockquest and in particular to
Ruby who won the Women’s Musicianship Award.
Chamber Music Contest—Congratulations to Jung Yun Lee and Ruby
Fraser, both of whom are members of the Asplmayr Trio which was
Highly Commended at the Chamber Music Contest on Monday.
The Big Sing—Good luck to the Choirs and the Chorale as they head off to
Dunedin to take part in The Big Sing on Friday.
Yesterday, a few
Craighead students
were invited to participate in the Grantlea Downs
School Art Fair. The first group of
girls ran an iPad workshop showing
Grantlea Downs senior students how
to produce a poster using the
SketchbookX application. The second
group ran an observational drawing workshop and showed off their
drawing skills to the junior students. Both activities were very well received. We were really impressed with the high turnout of Grantlea
Downs students and their eagerness to learn.
